Hitting the disk write every 3 seconds!

Hello,
Oracle seems to be hitting the disk every 3 seconds - on checking I find that it is the
oracle checkpoint process which writes to the control files every 3 seconds!
Is there a way to make it longer?
There are no parameters in the init.ora for this one.
(log_checkpoint_interval is 10000 and log_checkpoint_timeout is 1800).
I have tried with Oracle 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 on redhat7 - same results.
The disk access is driving me crazy!
strace on ckpt process:
pwrite(407, "\25\2\0\0\3\0\0\0Q\26\0\0\377\377\1\4\257I\0\0\2\0\0\0"..., 4096, 12288) = 4096
pwrite(406, "\25\2\0\0\3\0\0\0Q\26\0\0\377\377\1\4\257I\0\0\2\0\0\0"..., 4096, 12288) = 4096
pwrite(405, "\25\2\0\0\3\0\0\0Q\26\0\0\377\377\1\4\257I\0\0\2\0\0\0"..., 4096, 12288) = 4096
ls -l /proc/<ckpt-pid>/fd also shows the files being written.

I believe that this is part of the incremental checkpoint process of 8i. Every 3 seconds CKPT scans the checkpoint queues, finds the lowest RBA (redo byte address)of the buffers at the heads of the queues and writes this out to the control file. This is written to a "thread private" location in the control file, hence the call to pwrite. This is a light-weight control file update using an offset into the control file and is very efficient. This recorded RBA represents the current position of the incremental checkpoint for the instance.
(Note that LOG_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL and LOG_CHECKPOINT_TIMEOUT mean completely different things in 8i than previously.)

I am running Firefox 18 on Windows 7, all with latest updates. The Adobe Flash plugin (latest version) hits the disk with hundreds of reads and hundreds of writes each second. This seems to start as soon as cnn.com is loaded then as other sites are loaded it just gets worse. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Is it normal? If not normal, how can I can stop it?

I do not really have any solid suggestions for this but

Flash often causes issues with Firefox. From Flash 11.3 some Windows users were needing to disable Flash's ''protected mode''. Rather a longshot but it may be worth experimenting with the protected mode and trying turning it off.

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive.  Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth)  around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.

  • In the external Quick Time Player the clips stop every few seconds. What to do?

In the last weeks I cannot play YouTube clips in the browser but only in the external Quick Time Player. But the clips stop every few seconds. What to do?

If YouTube videos are buffering in you browser, then it sounds more like a problem with your Internet speed.
If you contact your Internet Service Provider, they should be more than happy to help.

  • My browser keeps pausing and giving me the color wheel every few seconds

Whenever I'm using Firefox my browser pauses every few seconds and if I am typing something nothing comes out, or the color wheel comes out (I'm on a Mac), if I'm watching a video it pauses every few seconds... it's sort of maddening. I do have about 20 tabs open at a time, I don't know if that is what causes it. It doesn't seem to happen when I am in Safari.

  • Why does the connection drop every other second when streaming from iplayer through safari to apple tv?

I am trying to listen to iplayer radio through apple TV from my macbook air. When I switch back to just using the macbook the stream is consistent and works well but when I switch to airplay mode the sound stream literally drops in and out every other second. Ha! I have just gone into iTunes and I have the same issue!?
I have checked for software updates on both apple devices and restarted my router but still I have the same issue.
This is really annoying as this is the main reason I got apple TV! Can anyone help??

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • Skype keeps hanging the video/audio every few seconds why?

I daily speak to my disabled son in his hospice some miles away.
I am running OS X 10.9.1 on a mid2012 rMBP using the latest version of Skype.
He is running the same OS and Skype on an iMac.
For many weeks we have been suffering from repeated hangs of video/audio during the conversation, this happens about every 5-10 seconds and lasts about 5-10 seconds.  As you can imagine this is very frustrating.  Before you say it I have tried FaceTime and that is even worse.
Now today after screaming at my ISP last night and at their suggestion I turned off my Firewall during the conversation and lo and behold the hanging stopped.  Switching it back on during the conversation the call remained stable without hanging - v.strange.
Now I then dropped the call switched off the firewall and recalled - the hanging continued.
Additionally I notice that the Video changes from 4:5 to 16:9 and back again regularly and I think this is due to a poor connection but my end has had no errors and runs at 78Mb/s down with 16Mb/s up (sons is 35 down 16 up - no knowledge of error situation).
The firewall is of real interest since there appears to be many reports of issues with Skype and Mavericks.
Anyone got any suggestions?  (I have replaced Skype without

Ever since Microsoft bought Skype I have been experience more and more issues like this. I used Skype to keep in touch with my family in Europe and for the past year or so Skype got so bad that I am slowly switching to Viber and  FaceTime, depending on is available to the people I talk to. Even when I talk to friends in US abour 3 hours away I still prefer Facetime over Skype.
if you tried FaceTime and it didn't work for you, I am not sure what else you could try. if you don't need video, just try Viber.

  • I don't want to have to click the allow button every 3 seconds uploading video, how do I disable the "firefox prevented the page from reloading" when I've already put the site on my exceptions list?

I begin uploading video to Facebook and a small window opens to show the progress bar but, the video stops uploading about every 5% when a notification comes from the top bar stating: "Firefox prevented the page from reloading" with an Allow button on the right. Regardless of clicking the allow button and putting Facebook in every exception list Firefox options seems to have or even turning pop up blockers off, that dam button keeps coming! How do I prevent or disable this?
I am running windows XP media center edition SP2, and have Firefox v3.6.11

  • My iPhone 4S Wont Come on, but makes the charging sound every few seconds

I have an iPhone 4S and the device wont power on, but when i plug it in, it repeatedly makes the sound of when you plug in your device to a power source. What is this and How do i fix this?

Try to backup and restore you device in itunes...restoring the device is like removing the iOS software off the device and re-add in a newer software, after you have restore you device, MAKE SURE YOU SET UP YOUR DEVICE LIKE A NEW DEVICE, DONT NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP!!... give the device a chance to use the newer software and see if the issue still persisting, if the issue still on going then its would be a hardware issue.
Call Apple Care and see if your device is still under warranty to get it replace

  • I updgraded to IOS 6 and now downloaded songs skip to the next song every two seconds on both my iphone and ipad, and some do not skip. What is going on?

I downloaded the same songs on another phone working in IOS 5.1.1 and there is no problem.  Is this a bug? or is it my imagination?

I've spent most of the last two days trying to restore from back-ups and set up as new and neither worked. iTunes stopped recognizing it AS an iPod at one point so I tried reinstalling iTunes to make sure it was all up to date but it's still doing the same thing. Freezes or disconnects during sync or throws up an error message and 95% of the music that "has" synced is greyed out and not playable. I'm assuming the update has a bug cos these forums are full of problems people are having since the update, I had no issues with anything before this upgrade was installed.

  • [SOLVED] Broken script sends me the same message every ten seconds

I accidentally did something really, really stupid earlier.
After modifying a script, I kept a "while/do" loop intact in such a manner similar to this:
    while [ i==0 ]; do
echo "message" | mail [email protected]
    done
As you can see, this sent the same message god-knows-how-many-times in the minute or two it took me to figure out the issue.  So, my mailbox is being flooded with this same message.  Removing heirloom-mailx didn't yield any positive results.
Is there any way I can prevent it from sending any more copies produced by this loop, or do I just have to put up with it until it produces its very last message from that?  In the two minutes it took to type this message, I've already received eight more copies, and more are on the way.

  • On putting the ipod on in the iphone, the sound breaks every few seconds

    As per the subject

Your notebook is an Enterprise/Business model. I would recommend posting this in the HP Enterprise Support Forums for better coverage.
You can access the enterprise support forums at the following link.

However, my own personal opinion is there might be an issue with the headset, not the hardware/software on the notebook. You mentioned even changing the bluetooth hardware and the issue remained, which leads me to believe it might have to do with the headset and Windows 7. Have you tried another headset on this notebook to see if the issue was the same?
