  • SQLPATH for user profile of SQL*PLUS

    Hi there,
    I am using 9.2 on HPUX. I tried set up my user profile script (login.sql) and place it in a place included in SQLPATH variable. It worked in 8.1.x but not in 9.2
    Is it an identified bug? I have no access to metalink

    Seems to work on my windows environment.

  • SQL*Plus and NLS_DATE_FORMAT

    So, I haven't visited this topic in a long time, so I'm trying to refresh my memory on how everything works ...
    We set our NLS_DATE_FORMAT at the system level ... what ... 4 years ago to 'MM/DD/RR'. Despite the fact that I set this to something more commonly-used than the default of 'DD-Mon-RR', we've adopted the standard of always using TO_DATE() with an explicit format, just in case it's ever changed.
    There were some applications that missed the standard, and now that a driver (for ColdFusion) has been updated, these SQL statements are now failing.
    When I started looking into it, I realized that the system-level default of 'MM/DD/RR' should work fine. But, after experimenting in SQL*Plus and TOAD, I am thinking that either:
    1) the system-level format is not being used
    2) and/or there are login scripts which are setting these to something else
    Coincidentally, both SQL*Plus and TOAD return the exact same query results:
    SQL> select *
         from NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMETERS
         where parameter = 'NLS_DATE_FORMAT';
    PARAMETER                      VALUE
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT                MM/DD/RR
    SQL> select *
         from NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS
         where parameter = 'NLS_DATE_FORMAT';
    PARAMETER                      VALUE
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT                DD-MON-RRSo I looked into the glogin.sql script (which both tools share), and there's nothing mentioned about the NLS_DATE_FORMAT

    SET scan offIf I expressly go into either tool and execute, the following, setting the format to that already delcared at the system-level:
    alter session set nls_date_format = 'MM/DD/RR'Then these SQL statements start running just fine again.
    There's something that I'm missing in my basic understanding of how this works. I assumed that the driver update for ColdFusion perhaps enabled a different "glogin.sql"-type script equivalent for that tool ... until ... I started checking into how the NLS_DATE_FORMAT is supposed to work ... but isn't. Could someone help me clarify where the hole is in my understanding?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    chuckers wrote:
    What's the difference, then, between NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS and NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMETERS in my initial post? The glogin.sql script isn't altering the NLS_DATE_FORMAT for the desktop version of SQL*Plus, so I'm perplexed that the SESSION format differs from the INSTANCE format.NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS are the NLS parameters that are in force for your particular session (i.e. the particular connection you have). Most client applications cause things like NLS_DATE_FORMAT to be set, overriding the NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMETERS. Instance-level NLS settings are most commonly used only for purely back-end processing (i.e. background jobs scheduled via DBMS_JOB or DBMS_SCHEDULER, etc.) 9 times out of 10, the client application is going to override the instance-level paramters.
    I even opened SQL Developer, and got
    select * from nls_session_parameters where parameter = 'NLS_DATE_FORMAT';
    PARAMETER                      VALUE
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT                DD-MON-RR
    1 rows selected
    select * from nls_instance_parameters where parameter = 'NLS_DATE_FORMAT'
    PARAMETER                      VALUE
    NLS_DATE_FORMAT                MM/DD/RR
    1 rows selected
    That's not unexpected. Java applications are going to use the Java regional properties at least to specify a date format. SQL Developer has a config option for the date format, so it may well be specifying a different format.
    They're all 3 (Toad, SQL*Plus, TOAD) so suspiciously consistent, that I'm questioning some of the fundamentals of the NLS setup.
    I went ahead and looked via SQL*Plus from the server-side, & things are looking more consistently in-line with my expectations:

    --=cfI'm not surprised that SQL*Plus from the Unix database server is going to have session-level settings that match the instance-level settings because there is probably nothing set in the Unix environment that would override the instance-level settings. There is probably no NLS_LANG or NLS_DATE_FORMAT set as environment variables and probably no central place to look for regional settings. Most applications, particularly Windows and Java apps, are going to have multiple places to look for that sort of information.

    C:\Users\lord>sqlplus / as sysdba SELECT * V$VERSION;
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    Use SQL*Plus to execute SQL, PL/SQL and SQL*Plus statements.
    Usage 1: sqlplus -H | -V
    -H Displays the SQL*Plus version and the
    usage help.
    -V Displays the SQL*Plus version.
    Usage 2: sqlplus [ [<option>] [{logon | /nolog}] [<start>] ]
    <option> is: [-C <version>] [-L] [-M "<options>"] [-R <level>] [-S]
    -C <version> Sets the compatibility of affected commands to the
    version specified by <version>. The version has
    the form "x.y[.z]". For example, -C 10.2.0
    -L Attempts to log on just once, instead of
    reprompting on error.
    -M "<options>" Sets automatic HTML markup of output. The options
    have the form:
    HTML ON [HEAD text] [BODY text] [TABLE text]
    [ENTMAP {ON|OFF}] [SPOOL {ON|OFF}] [PRE[FORMAT] ON]
    -R <level> Sets restricted mode to disable SQL*Plus commands
    that interact with the file system. The level can
    be 1, 2 or 3. The most restrictive is -R 3 which
    disables all user commands interacting with the
    file system.
    -S Sets silent mode which suppresses the display of
    the SQL*Plus banner, prompts, and echoing of
    commands.
    <logon> is: {<username>[<password>][@<connect_identifier>] | / }
    [AS {SYSDBA | SYSOPER | SYSASM}] [EDITION=value]
    Specifies the database account username, password and connect
    identifier for the database connection. Without a connect
    identifier, SQL*Plus connects to the default database.
    The AS SYSDBA, AS SYSOPER and AS SYSASM options are database
    administration privileges.
    <connect_identifier> can be in the form of Net Service Name
    or Easy Connect.
    @[<net_service_name> | [/]Host[:Port]/<service_name>]
    <net_service_name> is a simple name for a service that resolves
    to a connect descriptor.
    Example: Connect to database using Net Service Name and the
    database net service name is ORCL.
    sqlplus myusername/mypassword@ORCL
    Host specifies the host name or IP address of the database
    server computer.
    Port specifies the listening port on the database server.
    <service_name> specifies the service name of the database you
    want to access.
    Example: Connect to database using Easy Connect and the
    Service name is ORCL.
    sqlplus myusername/mypassword@Host/ORCL
    The /NOLOG option starts SQL*Plus without connecting to a
    database.
    The EDITION specifies the value for Session Edition.
    <start> is: @<URL>|<filename>[.<ext>] [<parameter> ...]
    Runs the specified SQL*Plus script from a web server (URL) or the
    local file system (filename.ext) with specified parameters that
    will be assigned to substitution variables in the script.
    When SQL*Plus starts, and after CONNECT commands, the site profile
    (e.g. $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/glogin.sql) and the user profile
    (e.g. login.sql in the working directory) are run. The files may
    contain SQL*Plus commands.
    Refer to the SQL*Plus User's Guide and Reference for more information.

  • Checking Module to Prevent SQL Plus usage on Database

    I have a question regarding logon triggers checking against SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV', 'MODULE'). I created a logon trigger that looks for SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV', 'MODULE') = 'SQLPLUS.EXE'
    and if it matches then it only allows specified users to log in to the database. This code works but I am confused as to why when I check SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV', 'MODULE') after I login in
    shows SQL*Plus which clearly does not match my IF statement in my logon trigger.
    Second issue. If I rename sqlplus.exe to jeff.exe and run it I am abled to log in to the database as a non DBA user. But the module still shows as SQL*Plus. Why is this?

    That doesn't make sense. Why am I able to log in when I renamed the exe? And why does the module still show as SQL*Plus?You are right - it does not make sense. The idea that Oracle might perhaps set module to SQLPLUS.EXE on executable start, and then re set from SQLPLUS.EXE to SQL*Plus after connect, or in glogin.sql, to ensure it is consistent across all operating system never crossed my mind.
    You might want to refer to Support Note "SQL*Plus Session/Module is Not Showing in V$SESSION" [ID 1312340.1] to see whether anything in there helps. I'm pretty sure http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e16604/ch_twelve040.htm#i2698573 doesn't help much, though.
    I'd certainly be raising it with Support as a potential security challenge, to get that potential hole closed.

    I wonder whether Oracle put that capability in there - if an untained SQLPLUS.EXE, it tells you that it is SQLPLUS.EXE, but if renamed it tells you 'SQL*Plus'? Specuklation, but it is one thing I might do to subtly raise the flag. Best bet - ask Support.

  • Can we use xml Publisher reporting for sql* Plus in EBS

    Hello All,
    The current report is designed in Sql* Plus Executable report and the output is in txt format, Now the requirement is to have the output in Excel format.
    So is it possible to use the xml reporting and make the output as Excel from the word template we design from MSword as we do for rdf(I have done few reports created in rdf to xml publisher reports in EBS and stand alone as well.).
    Do the same procedure will suit for Sql*Plus reports tooo or Is there any work around to achieve this.
    Thanks and Regards
    Balaji.

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply..
    I tried to do the follwoing
    1. changed the output to xml in the conc. prog.
    2. ran the same report but i am getting the follwoing error in the output file
    The XML page cannot be displayed
    Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
    Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource
    Other reports which are using the Oracle Reports(rdf) as source, i am able to generated the xml as expected....
    So my question is whether we can use sql* reports executable and generate xml in the conc.prog.
    if any one has used the sql*reports for xml publisher reporting... please let me know, so that if its possible i will check my sql needs some validation or tuning...
    thanks in advance

    Can you put your coding between code statements, like shown in the FAQ. It will be easier to read.
    Looking at your script, my first guess is that crontab will not find your sqlplus since your script does not have $HOME/bin in the $PATH. From what I understand, running .profile in your script will not work either because variables are exported to sub-shells, not to the shell above. You can call your script with a dot like . ./script which means that the script will run like it was typed at the command prompt. But it will be less confusing to define appropriate variables in the script. eg.
    ORACLE_SID=my_instance_name
    ORACLE_HOME=/my_path_to_oracle_home_directory
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib
    PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH
    I remember some slightly different way of coding to handle the sqlplus return codes.
    For instance:
    sqlplus -s /nolog > /dev/null <<-EOF
    connect system/manager
    @ssm.sql
    whenever oserror exit failure
    whenever sqlerror exit failure
    EOF
    sql_err=$?
    if [ $sql_err -ne 0 ]; then
       echo "FAILURE"
    else
       echo "SUCCESS"
    fiThe - in -EOF supresses tab's
    Using connect will prevent ps from showing your login credentials
    In some versions of bash the ending EOF needs to be at the beginning of the line to work.

    Btw, if you "source" a script running it like . .script, than an exit in that script will log you out.

  • SQL*Plus Raises: ORA-3113 End of file on communication channel

    I have a Win2000 machine running Oracle client 8i, connecting to an HP-UX server running 9i RAC, with an unknown collection of switches/firewalls in between. Using SQL*Plus I can successfully connect and run queries. However, if I leave the session idle for some time, approximately 15 minutes (though this varies), the next query I execute hangs for a few seconds, then returns with ORA-3113.
    I have enabled client-side tracing (ADMIN level). The following extract shows the point at which an error first occurs:

    ntt2err: soc 660 error - operation=5, ntresnt[0]=517, ntresnt[1]=54, ntresnt[2]=0
    This apparently indicates that the network timed out, a sign of a busy network.
    Can anyone:
    a) Confirm this or otherwise;
    b) Suggest how I may go about proving this to a corporate network operations team;
    Cheers, Si.

    I think the reason can be timeout on one of the firewalls. Network administrators
    quite often configure following setting:
    "Disconnect idle connection after 15 minutes" - I facedd this problem several
    times.

  • TNSPING failure and but surprising connecting through SQL*PLUS

    I have Oracle 9i and Oracle 10g express edition installed on my local machine.But since in the path i specified path of Oracle10g first so always tnsnames.ora got picked up from Oracl10g directory which is
         C:\softwares\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    Following are the contents of my sqlnet.ora :--->
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    Following are the contents of my tnsnames.ora:-->
    CCTD91 =(DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = cctdev91.jankoc.com)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA =(SERVICE_NAME = CCTD91)))
    Now when i am doing tnsping to this i got the error as:
    C:\>tnsping cctd91
    TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on 23-APR-2011 16:08:52

    Used parameter files:
    C:\softwares\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name
    But when i connect through Oracle 9i client(SQL*Plus) like peter/devworks@CCTD91, then i am able to connect successfully to Oracle 11g.
    Could someone let me know why TNSPING is failing for this and then still why i am able to connect thru SQL*PLUS using the name defined in TNSNAMES.ORA. ?

    sqlnet.ora is having just one line:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    I tried by adding another line: NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES) but did not make any difference so i removed.

  • Where its not possible to use a variable (&&var) in SQL*PLUS ?

    SQL*Plus Command Reference - DEFINE
    Whenever you run a stored query or script, SQL*Plus substitutes the value of variable for each substitution variable referencing variable (in the form &variable or &&variable)
    The question is which are the limits of this. Can eg even be between a 'STR&&varING' passed as parameter to some function? Or as parameter I can pass only a single variable and there isnt such auto-casting level ?
    I have created DBCA Scripts to batch create a DB. So I want inside these scripts to replace the DBNAME with a variable. So I can create different DBS with these prescriptions from an API tool.
    E.g here there are 6 different scenarios where I might need to pass the variable. I dont know
    1. On which of the bellow scenarios I can inject the &&var
    2. On which I cant and thus have to create a 2nd VAR to inject the 1st one
    3. Which dont accept variables at all - but only static text
    @D:\app\admin\DBNAMEY\scripts\CreateDB.sql
    spool D:\app\admin\DBNAMEY\scripts\CreateDB.log append
    startup nomount pfile="D:\app\admin\DBNAMEY\scripts\init.ora";
    CREATE DATABASE "DBNAMEY"
    DATAFILE 'D:\app\oradata\DBNAMEY\system01.dbf' SIZE ...
    GROUP 2 ('D:\app\oradata\DBNAMEY\redo02.log') SIZE 51200K,
    I may not start testing the scripts 6 times fearing corrupting my Workstation on half executed scripts.

    If you can't test because you are afraid the test might fail, you need to address that issue first.  No one on the web is going to give you iron-clad assurance that some code you write is going to work exactly as you expect.
    Your script is trying to create a database?  What's the worst thing that can happen if it doesn't work?  Do you know how to manually dis-mantle whatever your script does?  If not, you need to learn.  The knowledge you will gain from that exercise will go a long way to improving your understanding of how these things interrelate.

  • Seek help to format spool file from SQL*PLUS

    I am running a Unix shell script to call a Oracle 11g SQL script from a Oracle database. In this SQL script, I need to connect to many different remote databases to select data, then sool these records as one big text file to a directory. Then email the file to related Group users. In the spool file, there is a line on the top of each page like this:
    DUMMY
    DB_NAME
    I know this is caused by connect to remote database in SQL*PLUS. My connection string is like this:
    Conn system/password@Oracle_SID
    How can I remove these lines or how to skip these lines into spool file? Please advise. Thanks in advnce. Wish all of you Happy New Year!!!

    Hi,
    It sounds like you have some kind of formatting (such as SQL*Plus TTITLE) producing the output you don't want. If that's the case, temporarily stopping the spooling might not help you. Find out what is causing the output that you don't want. You say that you know it is caused by the CONNECT statements, but it must be more than that. I've written scripts with CONNECT statements that don't have anything like what you reported at the top of each page; in fact, they don't even have pages: the output is one continuous stream. Find out what's putting the unwanted output there, and that will be a big clue as to how you can stop it.
    You say that you know the unwanted titles are there because of the CONNECT statements. If so, use database links instead of CONNECT. You don't have to use dbms_scheduler or utl_file; just eliminate the CONNECT statements. (I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with dbms_scheduler or utl_file; you should definitely investigate those tools. I'm just saying that using database links is independent of them.)
    What would happen if you did all your connecting to different databases at the OS level? Can you write a shell script that connects to each database in turn, and runs a SQL*Plus script in each one. Each SQL*Plus script would have a SPOOL or SPOOL ... APPEND command, or maybe you could build the SPOOL into a LOGIN.SQL script.

  • 8.1.7: ORA-01410 in PL/SQL but not SQL*Plus

    This has been driving me crazy, and a search here and in comp.databases.oracle didn't turn up any solutions.
    When the following code is part of a stored procedure, it fails with ORA-01410 (Invalid ROWID). It executes perfectly from SQL*Plus, I've verified that TMP_TASK_DATA contains data, and the query clearly specifies a ROWID.
    As noted in the subject, this occurs on 8.1.7. TMP_TASK_DATA and TMP_TASK_RETRIEVAL are both global temp tables. I don't currently have access to Metalink, so was hoping that someone has run across this and has some hints.
    Thx,
    (query edited to limit "IN" list):
            INSERT  INTO TMP_TASK_RETRIEVAL
                    (TASK_ID, TD_ROWID, SORT_ORDER)
            SELECT  TASK_ID, TD_ROWID, ROWNUM
            FROM    (
                    SELECT  TASK_ID, TD_ROWID
                    FROM    (
                            SELECT  TASK_ID,
                                    ROWID                                   as TD_ROWID,
                                    SF_GET_PRIORITY(TASK_TYPE, 1 )          as PRIORITY_COMM,
                                    COMPLETED_TIME                          as FINISH_TIME,
                                    FIRST_READY_TIME                        as QUEUE_TIME
                            FROM    TMP_TASK_DATA
                            WHERE   USER_NUMBER = v_USER_NUM
                            AND     TASK_TYPE in
                                    'AAAA', 'BBBB', 'CCCC'
                    ORDER BY
                            PRIORITY_COMM,
                            decode(PRIORITY_COMM, 10, FINISH_TIME, QUEUE_TIME)
                    );

    Thanks for the info. It turned out that I was wrong about removing the PL/SQL variable from the query; either that, or the error occurs at arbitrary times.
    As best I can tell, a ROWID simply can't be passed between nested inline views, so I reduced them to one level (which means that I have to run the function twice in the ORDER BY, rather than once in the nested select).
