Home Button intermittently problematic

I have Iphone 4 and the home buttonis erratic, it starts as just a mild glitch needing me to push it twice to make it work and it then gets worse to the point where it doesnt work much at all, if i do a reset it seems to clear up for a few days. I have done a restore and cleared out all apps adding them back one by one but no difference I had left the phone for 2 days with no apps and a complete restore and it was still intermittently glitchy.
I think i will take it in for a refund.

I had same issue , to install again or go to repair center for maintance?
which one is perferrable? Thx !!!!
first do a hard reset. hold the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time for 10 seconds until apple logo appears. See if that helps. If no change, try a full restore. if still no change, take it back to the apple store and get it fixed/replaced.
As for me. my home button usually works fine. Sometimes it's like if i hit the home button twice, it takes me to the first home screen. Some times if I click the home button once to close the app, it's as if I clicked it twice and opens up the recently bar apps. Doesn't happen all the time but I'm going to keep my eye on it. I'll probably end up going to the genius bar and see what they think.

Home button intermittently doesn't respond.  At times it takes 20+ depressions to get it to respond.  Have tried a reset on a number of times but like the home button it works sometimes and not other times.

  • Home button intermittent problem

My IPAD 2 home button has developed a fault, sometimes it works, sometimes it does'nt, when the fault is there I am unable to do anything with my Ipad apart from restart it and even then this doesnt always cure the issue.

Here's a trick to calibrarte the home button:
Open a stock iOS app (e.g., Clock). Once the app is open, press your iPad’s power button until the ‘slide to power off’ screen appears. From that screen, press and hold your Home button until iOS force quits the stock app you have open. You’re done!

  • Intermittent Home Button Failure on iPad 1

I bought one of the early iPad “1” 64GB iPads in June 2010 in the Apple store, Belfast.  Used for leisure at home and always within a good case it has provided great service since then; that is until loading the pre-iOS 5 download.
It may have been just a coincidence (a point confirmed at the Belfast Apple Genius Bar yesterday) but ever since then my iPad has contracted an intermittent Home Button failure.
Yesterday, after around 6 weeks of hoping that subsequent iOS upgrades would have corrected the fault I finally took the ailing iPad to the Belfast Apple Genius Bar for a hopefully simple resolution.  Unfortunately there was none.  The two options provided were:
    1.    Live with it and use the accessibility options which has a floating software-based home button overlaid on the screen; or
    2.    Pay over £220 for a replacement iPad. – Ouch
That really stung, particularly given the light use the iPad has received compared to the pounding the home buttons on the couple of iPhones I’ve used over the past 3.5 years without failure.
    Three questions really:
    1.    Has anyone else had a similar Home Button failure on an early iPad 1
    2.    Does anyone have any better solution than forking out for a replacement
    3.    Could Apple not give their ailing iPads a new lease of life and develop a plug-in home button to fit into the connection socket underneath and clip over the ailing Home Button as an optional override which could also double as an accessibility accessory?

    IT WORKED!! :)
After growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of responsiveness while both multitasking or simply closing an app, I tried this this little trick rather than taking more extreme measures.
I'm very happy to report that it seems to have worked like a charm!!
The home button works as well as it did when my phone was brand new over a year ago!

  • Intermittent home button

Hi my home button is intermittent and its driving me mad it can go a couple of months no problems then it can be intermittent for a couple of weeks then fine again. I've checked my phones up to date with software.
    Regards Karl

It is not unusual for hardware to fail. You can however make sure it is not software related by doing user troubleshooting. Restart, reset, restore. Power off/on, reset is holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If necessary, restore from a backup, and if necessary restore as a new device. If that does not help, you can have the device checked at Apple. Since you probably do not have any warranty left, then the only option would be to purchase an OOW device, or upgrade.
You could try to use the Accessibility options and turn on the Assistive Touch, which will put a touch button on the screen for you to use.

  • Intermittent home button failure on i4

During the past couple weeks, I sometimes have to press the home button several times for it to work... this happens when the phone is asleep and when it is awake, when apps are running and when no app is running. And sometimes, the home button works just fine on the first push. The problem seems to be getting worse over time...
Anyone else have this issue? Is it fixable?

  • Iphone 4 home button not working

For the second time in a month, the home button on my iPhone 4 stopped working. First, it stopped intermittently, then it stops entirely. Last time, I powered my phone off and it was fine - until today. I'm syncing now so I don't lose any data, but this time, I think I am going to reset it in iTunes to see if that helps.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I got my phone in February of 2011 so it isn't covered by AppleCare, but apparently the hardware is covered under a thing I did at Verizon. Should I just get a fresh phone, even if it is another 4 and not a 4S?

Hey,  My home button would not work either and noticed it would work on and off sometimes.  Finally I realized that it would work on and off after I plugged it in to charge.
So I figured out how to make it work without any reset.  It is VERY simple:
    1. Plug in you phone with the provided charging connector. (doesn’t matter if it is plugged in to a power source, the connector is going to be used simply as a tool)
    2. Use slight force to push the connector a little deeper into the phone. The point is to slightly shift the hardware under the home button.
    3. Keep pushing the connector into the phone and or wiggling it until the home button works again. Then carefully and slowly unplug your phone.
I realized that the home button must shift out of position for some reason.  By using the connector, you can push the hardware back into place.  That is prop why resynching helps.  Thats because you have to plug in the phone causing the hardware to shift.  I’m no engineer, but it makes sense to me, most importantly, it works!
    Good Luck

  • The Home Button on my iPhone 3GS is working off and on.

Sometimes when I press the Home Button it works immediately.
Other times it does not work at all,or I have to press it three or four times, and quite hard,to get to the next screen.
It is an intermittent problem but is not happening more often.
Any advice on how this can be resolved?

Hi, I had the same thing with my iphone 4 not so long ago. It had a problem and i sent it to the apple store (it had lesss than a year so i didn't pay). If you send it and you have apple care then they would send you a new one for free.

  • Any ideas on how to get my home button to work like it should?

I have the third generation iPad and have been having intermittent problems with the home button.  The iPad seems to work just fine,
but sometimes the home button doesn't do anything.  If I am in Safari and want to change to Mail, for example, the only way to get that done
is to turn the iPad off, let it rest a short time, turn it back on and then go to the screen I want.  I can navigate within an app, but can't change apps
without going through the above...a real hassle!  I had an appointment with the Genius Bar (Have Apple Care), but then the Home button started
working for a while and at this time of year, I really don't want to go to the Apple Store!  Any ideas?  Thanks for your help.

  • IPhone Home Button not working after upgrade to ios 5.1.1

    Hey everyone,
    I'm pretty sure this is a software failure due to the symtoms the iPhone is showing;
0 - the home button does not work at all when the phone is turned on and running ios 5.1.1, well it used to work okay when i had ios 5.0.1, I upgraded to 5.1.0 and started working randomly, upgraded to 5.1.1 to see if it was fixed with no luck at all.
1 - When locked the screen does sometime light up, like when you press the home button and don't slide the unlock button. but it does not exit apps anytime, I mean it doesn't act like it's pressing the home button randomly but only when the phone is locked.
2- The button does work perfectly when iOS is not running: I can get in and get out of recovery and dfu mode at will, that wouldn't be possible if the button were broke.
3- what else? Oh yea, not really a symtom: Tried the 'home button calibration' several times.
4 - It's not filthy, since I really cleaned it thoroughly with a powerful tiny nozed air blower I got and gave a rubbing alcohol treatment too.
5 - when I shut the phone down it instantly turns back on, I can interrupt the turning on for turning the phone into dfu mode (i'm sure It's in DFU mode because the tinyumbrella log monitor tells me)
I'm now using the 'soft' home button that goes in the accesibility options, but hey, I didn't pay a ton of money for a phone that the same Apple is gonna break down.
It's out of warranty and I don't have apple stores where I live.
I'd downgrade to 5.0.1 in a snap if I could but I'm not into jailbreaking, so the shsh blob thingie is not a possibility.
Any apple dev around that can give me a workaround?
    thanks a lot in advance
    Added more info ~

I had the same problem with Home button not responding after upgrading from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.1.1 on an iPhone4.   I solved it but not sure exactly what fixed it.   Here is what I did.
    1.  Took it local Apple store Genius appointment.   They used a special tool and took some lint out of the connector opening.   The Home button started working.   They said even though the phone was out of warranty, I could buy a new replacement one without a contract for $150.
    2.   The Home button stopped working when I got home.   I got some compressed air in a can and blew the air through the connector to try and clean out more dust.   I now keep the phone with the connector opening facing down in my pocket.   I also struck the phone downward on my hand or other soft surface to force as much dust out as possible.
    3.  The Home button still was intermittent.  I then tried to do a hard reset by holding the power on key and the Home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds.  This doesn't work if the Home button doesn't respond.
    4.  I connected the iphone to Itunes via the USB to sync the phone.  While connected, I did a Hard Reset by Holding the Power button and Home button simultaneously.  I noticed the Home button responded better when connected to ITUNES via the USB.
    5.  I did a backup of the iphone4 by highlighting the iphone 4 while connected to ITunes and right mouse click and selecting BACKUP.    I was prepared to reset my phone4 in iTUNES and restore it from the backup.
The phone worked consistently before I had to do this.
    6.  As a last resort which I didn't need to do, I was going to copy all my settings for the iphone by selecting the phone in iTUNES and looking at all the sync settings.   I would then have restored the iphone to original factory settings and then sync the phone using the copied settings.  This would have made sure that the backup didn't include the bug.
Fortunately, I didn't have to do step 5 and 6.   Things started working after Step 4.  So I don't really know if it was the iOS 5.1.1 upgrade or pure coincidence that the Home button stopped working immediately after the upgrade.

  • Why is my iPhone home button not working?

Recent;y my iPhone 4 home button has intermittently stopped going "home" and just stay on the last page selected.  I spoke with an apple customer service person and the said that if the horizontal tray at the bottom of the display could be too full ad that would cause a delay in the home button working. Any suggestions?

If this has anything to do with software, a back up and restore is always the best option to do! First you will want to create a back up via this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US
After the back up has been created, if you really want to save your information to the computer than here is a whole list of ways to save your info to a computer:
    Section 1:
              -About authorizing and de-authorizing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1730
Prevent unprompted syncing of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad:
    Mac- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1764
    Windows- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1677
    Section 2:
-iOS how to transfer or sync content to your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296?viewlocale=en_US
Transfer purchases from your iPod, iphone, or iPad to an authorized computer:
    Mac- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2554
    Windows- http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2566?viewlocale=en_US
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
               Backing up, updating and restoring:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
After you are comfortable that you saved all of your information, do a system restore back to factory settings! the reason is because if you can prove to apple, that in factory settings that the phone is not operating as expected, so long as your in warranty they will service the product. If you are outside, you should only have to pay either $169 (Canada) $149 (USA) for an iphone 4. It may be a little more expensive for the 4S as it is the newest product. Those same prices apply to a iphone 3G and 3GS

  • My home button on iphone 5c not working correctly

    Hi,
Any ideas please - I have an iphone 5c that is about 17 mths old and has been working fine until yesterday when the home button became unresponsive - not all the time but intermittently.
I have turned the phone off for a while and then turned it back on but it made no difference.
This is the first problem I have had with this phone - it's been amazing til yesterday!
    Thanks in advance.
    yorky48

First, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If this does not work, and to make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using any backup data afterwards. Set up the rest of the personal settings manually and test Home Button.
If the phone works as before the update, restore from the latest backup. If the problem comes back, the backup data contained corrupt data, causing your issues.
If it still does not work, this is a hardware issue and the phone has to be serviced by Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Provider:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider

  • IOS 5.1 Update, Home Button Doesn't Work.

Ever since I installed the iOS 5.1 update on my iPhone 4, the home button does not work at all! I've tried every trouble shooting solution I could find. I've Restarted, I can't hard reset because the home button doesn't work, I've restored from back up, I've restored as new, I've vacuumed out and gently used a tooth brush in the port below the home button in attempt to remove any dust. I've tried opening a factory installed app such as Maps, Safari, Stocks etc and held the top button until the "Slide to power off" showed and then held down the home button until it went to home screen except it didn't go to the home screen at all the "slide to power off" disappeared after a while. I have extremely intermittent response with the Home Button. If i press it continuously it will work after 27 presses one time or 9 presses another but never when I try to do a hard reset and 9.999 times out of 10 it doesn't work. I am so frustrated! I didn't get it wet and it stopped working immediately after the software update. HELP!

I talked to Apple today and was told that it's a "hardware issue" and they will not fix it. I will have to pay 169.00 to have it repaired because it is no longer covered. He told me that "the software update triggered a hardware problem" and that they haven't heard of this issue before either and this was after he went and "spoke with a senior service advisor". The thing is that if THEIR software update triggered the "hardware problem" meaning that if I hadn't updated at all my phone would be in perfect working order right now then HOW IS THAT NOT A SOFTWARE ISSUE?! I am beyond livid. I cannot continue using my phone with assistive touch, NOTHING else works and I know this isn't the first time they've heard of it because how can so many people be having this problem and Apple NOT be aware of it?!  My family has bought three MacBooks, three MacBook Pros, one iPad, two iPad 2s, seven iPhone 3s, one iPhone 3GS, five iPhone 4s, two iPhone 4S, four Apple TVs, one Time Capsule and COUNTLESS versions of iPods and have never had an issue having any of them repaired and only four of those products had to be and it was a fast and hassle free...then again they all were covered still at the time of repair...
How do you restore to a previous firmware? I don't want a new phone...I want MY phone to work...the one that worked perfectly before their update....this is beyond ridiculous...I wish apple would take a look at their own support communities and see that this ISN'T our problem...it's a problem created by THEM.
