Home directory and personal website trouble after 10.6.7 Server

Xserve recently upgraded to 10.6.7 Server and it seems to have broken two features:
When doing Connect to Server as an LDAP user their home folder is no longer available as a mountable volume. The share that holds all user home folders IS available so that's not the end of the world.
However this also broke the personal web sites, so going to:
http://<serveraddress>/~shortname now just gives a 403 error
and I get these errors in the error_log (under WebServer in Console)
[Tue Aug 24 11:38:48 2010] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] File does not exist: /Library/WebServer/Documents/~walshd
[Mon Apr 25 09:11:22 2011] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] (62)Too many levels of symbolic links: access to /~walshd failed
[Mon Apr 25 12:39:39 2011] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] (62)Too many levels of symbolic links: access to /~walshd failed
The sharepoint is on an old XServe RAID unit connected directly to server via FibreChannel, but that hasn't changed in a long time...only recent change was running all Software Updates which included moving up to 10.6.7 Server.
Any ideas what I'm missing or where to start looking to resolve this?
Thanks!

There are so many ways of configuring home directories that this can't be answered without more information.
For example, are you using automount to mount the user's home directory when they log in?
or do the clients mount a static mount and their Open Directory record just includes a link to the (mounted) home directory?
We are using automounts to get users their home folders. And when logging in at a terminal with an LDAP account you do get into your account as expected. It's only Go -> Connect to Server that won't give the home folder as a sharepoint and the web service for user sites that we agree are most likely tied together.
I have both userdir_module and apple_userdir_module enabled at the moment, although when I tried just one or the other I was getting an Object does not exist rather than the permission error.
I think the key to solving this is in the console log entries httpd -> error_log:

The strangest thing about this issue is that it happened  after I applied a bunch of updates last week:
2010-04-22 12:52:17 -0400: Installed "Remote Desktop Client Update" (3.3.2)
2010-04-22 12:52:23 -0400: Installed "AirPort Base Station Update 2010-001" (5.5.1)
2010-04-22 12:52:39 -0400: Installed "QuickTime" (7.6.6)
2010-04-22 12:52:41 -0400: Installed "Xserve EFI Firmware Update" (1.1)
2010-04-22 12:52:44 -0400: Installed "iLife Support" (9.0.4)
2010-04-22 12:52:59 -0400: Installed "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5" (1.0)
2010-04-22 12:53:21 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (9.1)
2010-04-22 12:54:31 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2010-003" (1.0)
2010-04-22 12:55:16 -0400: Installed "Safari" (4.0.5)
2010-04-22 13:15:22 -0400: Installed "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6" (1.0)
Could any of these have broken the home directories sharepoints or is this just a huge coincidence?

Ipod touch wont load past apple screen. I have tried resetting by holding home button and on/off but after it resets it still only loads to the apple screen. When I plug the device in It stays on the apple screen and itunes does not recognize it? I fear it may be stuck in some sort of reset loop which is stopping itunes from recognizing it. How do I go about the process of sending it in to apple if I cannot find a fix? Thank you in advance, it is greatly appreciated!!

    - See if placing the iPod in Recovery mode will allow a restore.
    - If not successful and you can't turn the iPod fully off (that is required to place in recovery mode), then let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the reset, restore again
    - Then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apples store.

  • Best way to make a backup of home directory and system files?

    I need to create a backup of my /home/user directory and important files like xorg.conf rc.conf & /boot/grub/menu.lst ?
I would like to put it all into a tar file so I can keep the system on windows with out messing up the files.

  • Moved Home Directory and Cannot Log In

Seeking a little advice due to my being a little silly.
Moved my Home Directory over to my Opti-Bay Drive, changed the path in Accounts etc and then restarted. When trying to log back in to my system I get the following message:
You are unable to log in to the user account "XXXX" at this time.
Why Silly? Just before I moved my Home Directory over I had formatted the new drive as Encrypted. Am guessing that this is stopping me from logging in?
So how can I go about resolving this issue?
Many thanks in advance for any help!

    Managed to resolve the issue.
Ripped the drive with my Home Directory out of my MBP and connected it to another MBP as an external USB drive. Copied off my Directory and then formatted said drive as just Journaled. Installed back in to main MBP and all works

  • Please help with Home Directory and changing drive location

    Hi there.
I read some tutorials on moving the home folder to another drive (all went fine), but there are some things I don't quite understand.
I did a fresh Lion install (from SnowLeopard) and decided only to migrate my user data, but no folder data, so every folder in my home directory was completely empty (desktop, movies etc). When I first tried to move my home directory to a new Hard Drive I wrongly assumed that since all those folders were empty I didn't need to copy the home folder manually, just change the location. But when I restarted the computer everything was gone. So I followed the instructions more carefully the next time and manually copied my home folder over to the other HD first (even though every folder contained in the home dir says no data), and that is when I noticed it was copying 26gb of data. So where is this data stored, and what is it? Obviously it's important as on my Mac all my user data was gone, but aren't my settings and mail etc in my Library?
There seems to be no "show hidden data" etc for my Home dir. So there must be somethign about the Home directory (in the users folder) that I don't quite understand?
I  have 26gb of data hiding somewhere (when I do 'get info' on the home directory in the user folder, it says 26gb used, but all my folders are empty) and it would be handy to know what this is and the best way to manage it for future backups.
also - can I now completely delete the old home Dir from my System (SSD) drive since it's all on my other HD? All the folders are empty, but it still shows 26gb!
    thanks for your help

    Hi Ari,
    Welcome to discussions!
Unable to access your home directory... In what way? Via FTP? If so, how about deleting the file you made:
    cd /etc
    sudo rm ./ftpchroot
Or do you mean something else?

  • Filevault Encryption for Moved Home Directory and External Hard Drive

This posting consists of two different, yet associated, questions.
    Here is my relevant equipment:
    MacBook Pro
Micronet Platinum RAID Pro, 2.5 terabytes (uses: video editing, backup)
LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk, 160 gigabytes (use: additional storage for MacBook)
    *Question 1:*
I currently use FileVault to encrypt my Home directory on my MacBook Pro. However, I am running out of hard drive space, given that I do a lot of work with film and have a lot of large applications such as Final Cut Studio 2 and Creative Suite 3 Master Collection fully installed and taking up a lot of space.
Hence, I need to move my Home directory to an external hard drive to free up a nice amount of space, and I would like to keep the applications on the Macintosh hard drive to ensure that they run optimally (though the Lacie drive does use FireWire 800, so perhaps it would not matter?). +Leaving my Home directory unencrypted is not an option.+
Question: If I use the Advanced Options for my Account within Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts > (right click) Advanced Options...) to change the location of my Home directory to the Lacie external hard drive, will FileVault still encrypt my Home directory at this new location?
    *Question 2*
In the past, FileVault would not encrypt data on external hard drives—only data within a Home directory.
Of course, I understand that there are many ways to eschew this limitation of FileVault (e.g., create a secure image with Disk Utility, use third-party software, et cetera). Still, it would be nice to have this functionality built right into the Mac OS as part of FileVault, for ease, reliability, and so on.
Question: With Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, is there now any way to use FileVault to encrypt files other than those within the Home directory? That is, any files that I drop into the Lacie hard drive (for simplicity, let’s assume outside of the Home directory option I asked about above in the first question) would be encrypted by FileVault.
    Thanks.

  • TS2972 Troubleshoot HOME SHARING. Everything is connected. Everything is up to date. Everything is turned on. Everthing is enabled and My network works!! The ONLY thing that is not working is Home Sharing and this JUST happened after I updated iTunes.

I had NO problem with Home Sharing until I updated iTunes. INSTANTLY, Home Sharing quit. I have two AppleTV's, two computers running Win7 and iTunes. All have worked seamlesly until I updated iTunes last night. I have tried all of the Home Sharing trouble shooting suggestion with no luck. My network connections are good and I can stream EVERYTHING ( Netflix, Youtube, NetRadio etc ) EXCEPT I cannont connect to Home Sharing. What gives Apple Support? Where is the fix? Anyone?

Has there been any response that helped?  Why hasn't someone from Apple responded with a solution?  This post was created back in 2012 and I did an update on my iTunes to 12.1.1.4 and all of a sudden my Home Sharing stopped working.  I even reset my settings on my Apple TV hoping that would work and no, it didnt.  Does anyone have a solution?

  • Home Directory and different volume failed generates log in failure

I'm running OS X server 10.5.2. The set up is still used for test and learning purposes but I'm nearly finishing and knowing what I can and want to do.
However, there remains a large issue unresolved.
I have several volumes available on me server
    1. the startup volume
    2. a data volume
The users home folders are generated on either the start up or the data volume.
Login is successful for all users when I log in directly on the server.
When I login using my test client (MBP running 10.5.2) the accounts with their home located at the data volume are receiving the following messages:
"You are unable to log in to the user account '<account>' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred"
Anyone who can help me with resolving this issue?
Anyone who knows where the error is logged?

I just added the group name and granted that with read and write access to the volume.
That seemed to be the trick.
I'll hope this solves some issues for others, I spend months on this one ...

  • I recently downloaded Parallels 9 to my imac so I could install Windows 7 Home Premium and had no trouble everthing is working fine the only question I have is is there a benefit to migrating the 2 together and what happens when I do Thanks.  Ricco

I recently downloaded Parallels 9 to my imack so I could install Windows 7 Home Premiumwith no problem and everthing is working fine, and I was thinking of Migrating the 2 2 and was wondering what benefits there would be and what happens when I do.

Windows 7 will peer down through the VM and remember what hardware the VM is installed on. Migrate the VM to different Mac hardware, and on first boot, Windows 7 will advise you that you are not using genuine Microsoft Windows. It will then treat you as though it believes you misappropriated it.

  • Accidentally changed the path of the home directory and now I can not get access my profile.

before the way was /valumes/macintosh hd/igor but then i decided  to remove a space between macintosh and HD then I restarted my mac and after reloading I can not get access my profile. Thanks for the helping.

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume and re-install OS X on the volume.
This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

  • Change NAME of User Account, Home Directory, Time Capsule and Network

    Hi All.
I have a small home network and I would like to do this for all four of these.
I think I have instructions on doing this for User Account, Home Directory and Time Capsule.
Can anyone give me the "it is OK to do this" so I don't have to worry about something going wrong in the future?
Also, can I do this for my network and does anyone know where I find this?

So I gather I cannot rename the name of the "Macintosh HD" which I guess is the name of my Hard Drive?
Technically, it's the name of the OSX volume or partition, but is often just called your internal hard drive, since most folks only have one partition.  But some have multiple partitions, usually for dual booting, such as OSX and Windows; or Lion and Snow Leopard.
Yes, you can rename it easily (but you might check whether that will cause a problem with DejaVu).  It won't be a problem for Time Machine.
Just right-click it in a Finder sidebar or on your desktop.  Do not use any slashes or colons, however -- you might want to avoid any punctuation or special characters.
And then - In Accounts I have "Full Name" as literally my first and last name.
Yes.   Each user account has a full name and a short name.  The full name isn't used for much.
the HOME FOLDER is showing a totally different name than the "Full Name".
Correct.  It's the same as the short name.
So I set the HOME FOLDER name through some hocus pocus in the article and then what is the relationship between these things?
The short name and the home folder name should be the same.  The article shows how to rename the home folder, create a new user account with a matching name, then delete the old account.
If you're not comfortable with the instructions in the article, I'd strongly advise not doing it.  You may end up having to do a full system restore.  I don't know, but perhaps your local Apple Store will do it for you.
Functionally I have a HARD DRIVE and a HOME FOLDER and then the Full Name (listed in Accounts) is just sort of what I get called by...?
The hard drive (OSX partition) is where your entire Snow Leopard installation is:  OSX itself, your Apple and 3rd-party apps, and one or more home folders.  (Many folks who share a Mac have separate home folders for each user.)
    have I been smoking?
