Home User, 3rd Computer option...

Pease don't miss understand me, I am very happy with being able to use 2 computers and mix os systems when it comes to Cloud. But I just got a laptop to travel with, and already have one license on my desktop and the other on my wife’s mac. it would be great to have a middle premium price point, say $69/month for homes users to allow a third computer. I know I could go with two log ins and pay another $29 a month, but overall $100 a month is just a little too steep. And I saw someone else suggest activating and deactivating as needed, which is what I will probably do, but that also seems annoying.
Like I said, I'm not really complaining about the current set up, but if there was a third middle affordable option, I’d happily pay it.

Hi Melhaus_dz,
Thank you for the suggestion. I'll pass it on.

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Why did the Apple TV update remove "home movies" from the computer option in Apple tv?

AApple TV auto updated.  22 sept 2014.  Most of the movies I have on my iMac were under itunes as "home movies".  The Apple TV update removed the ability to see home movies in the "computer" option in Apple tv.   I can see them on my iMac, but no longer have access thru my Apple tv.  I can still see the few that are physically in "movies" in iTunes, but the Apple TV will now only show them.  Thanks

    Hello bernsteinr,
It sounds like an issue with Home Sharing. Check out the article below for more information on getting Home Sharing working again so you can see all the movies that you have on your iMac show up on your Apple TV.

  • Installing CC on 3rd computer

    Hi,
I am a user of the Adobe CC Photoshop photography Program. I know I can install it on 2 computers but not use it concurrently.
The thing is I was previously using it on my home desktop and my mac book pro. But i just recently started a studio and bought a new iMac and would like to install it on that as well.
Can I install on the 3rd computer? If not, is there an option where I can purchase an additional license at a cheaper price or I have to purchase the program again?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Vince

Thanks Mylenium for the answer, just a follow up clarification question.
When you say sign out does it mean permanently I can't use it on that computer?
Let's just say that I want to install CC on my new com but want to leave it on my laptop too but will only use that once in a while, when I have outdoor assignment. Can I sign out of one and sign in on the other and use it? and when I get back from assignment, I just sign out from the laptop and sign in on the new iMac. Does it work that way?
In other words since I'm only using the copy on my laptop once in a long while, can I use it interchangeably with the new iMac?

  • Can the Terminal add a user(with all options) on a single line?

    Howdy All,
Can the Mac Terminal add a user, with all options desired, on a single line?    If so, can I get an example of this single terminal line to work from?
    Thanks

Thanks Drew!   You have some great thoughts there. Perhaps I should provide a clearer environment of each high school(4). All classrooms have a lock down Windows environment. (There are no Macs any where in any classrooms.) The mini-tower will be the only Mac on each high school campus. we're in Dell country. The desktops are locked in such a way that only the ghosted/installed software on each hard drive works and no other software can be installed. USB sticks can't run any exe, jar, or other executable file. Even the other drives on the network can't run them. This has been setup to prevent students from bringing games into the environment and running them. Only the single classroom in each high school, where Web Tech is taught, has a ftp tool installed. Students cannot bring and use their own laptops either. So there really isn't any stray ftp activity happening. You cannot "ftp" out of the network! And there is only the one Mac available per campus.  All this makes it certainly easier to maintain for sure. I am the only user in the school district they let run a personal laptop...mine has Ubuntu (tweaked).  My knowledge of Linux has led them to assign this project to me. They are MS based entirely and so is their knowledge base.
I've got to teach the other 4 teachers how to manage the mini-tower.  Basically it is this:
         Start and stop Apache2,
         Start and stop vsftp,
Add ftp users(students will only have directory:           /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/studentlastname.firstname  )  Students will not log on to the min-   tower directly as any normal user would, but only through ftp. (I.E. no /home directory) ,
         Remove/delete students as needed
(I'll pre-install cgi-bin scripts on these to keep it simpler on the other teachers and myself.)
With this in mind, you can see why a basic script or single command line to install these students would be great! I want to keep it simple to avoid mistakes the teachers might make adding users. Once I understand adding a user (in a terminal) better on a Mac, I may write a script to make it happen for them.
I'd also like to understand removing/deleting a student/user better to insure everything is gone when executed.
I hope this clear things up. Any help is much appreciated.    THANKS!!!

  • The 10.4 upgrade smart playlist editing has removed the ellipse as the 3rd button option along side the adding or removing a parameter. Why? And can we get it back?

I just did the iTunes update to 10.4 (80) from 10.3 on a MacPro OS X 10.6.8 . I am extremely nervous and saddened by a subtle change to the smart playlist editing features. I have 178.26gb of music, and a very extensive array of playlists and smart playlists taking full advantage of all the wonderful features and complexity someone has taken the time to develop. I have taken years of time developing my library, and this one little change will set me back substantially. The change? Removing the ellipse as the 3rd button option along side the adding or removing a parameter. The button allowed one to  create levels or groups of parameters within the dialogue window that could act independently within one smart playlist. For example, songs from artist "A" needs at least 2 stars to be included, while songs from artist "B" need three stars, and they both can be in the same smart playlist which has its first level of complexity. I have lists that go dozens of layers beyond. And dozens more that cross reference. Is there any way we can get the hierarchy back, ie. Reintroduce the ellipse button? Or is there something new I do not know about? Thanks!

I would like to second this.
This subtle yet life-changing removal is a total loss for advanced users that (used to) take full advantage of "logical and hierarchical" playlists. It tremendously impairs the "smartness" of the feature, effectively removing the possibility of mixing "and" & "if" parameters—which was the real beauty of the whole concept of "smart playlists" à la iTunes.
Here's a simple example. I would like to create a playlist combining two genres (rock and electronic) with only songs that have a rating higher than 3. I cannot do that anymore. I need to create two playlists:
a first playlist (A) that displays [Rock] OR [Electronic] (note that this playlist will never be played, it's an intermediary step required for B)
then a second playlist (B) that displays [songs from playlist "A"] AND [with a rating higher than 3].
It's a pain. And it clutters up browsing lists on my iPad/iPhone a lot.
Smart playlists should get the ellipse button back!
Moreover, the possibility of creating / editing smart playlists on iOS via a nice menu would be just… awesome. I would have thought Apple was going in that "smart" direction with iTunes. In hoping it's just a delay… until iOS 5 maybe?

  • Time Machine does not backup home/user directory (on separate drive)

I recently installed a SSD into my Mini. Due to size restrictions, my home/user directory has to be kept on another drive. I retained the stock 1TB drive that came with the Mini for this.
Ok, installed the SSD, restored a Time Machine backups (sans user data). Used a different admin user and configured my user to use the 1TB drive for it's home directory (/Volumes/1TB/home/<user>). Restart, log in as my user, all is good. All data, settings, etc is there. Everything looks normal.
Time Machine REFUSES to backup this directory. It will backup the 1TB drive and anyting else I create in it, but not the home directory. I tried every permission trick I could think of or found online. I even tested it further by formatting the 1TB drive fresh, adding a new user, configuring the user to use the 1TB for their home directory and it still won't back it up (this was a test of permissions the OS set, to make sure I didn't change my data perms somewhere along the way). Time Machine would not backup the new user's home directory on the 1TB drive.
Any thoughts? I can't be the first person to have their home directory on a non-OS drive.
If I were to create a folder/file in /Volumes/1TB/<test file> ... Time Machine gets it perfect. It just will NOT touch /Volumes/1TB/home/<anything here>
    Thanks!

Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

  • Home user of iMac

Hi, I'm a home user of iMac. I got several question of using iMac (I'm new to mac). So here it is:
    1. Like mention above, I'm a home user of iMac and working outside, on weekdays I only use iMac for 5-6 hours and whole day on the weekends. Should I put it sleep or shut it down when I going to sleep and leaving for work in the morning? will putting it to sleep will increase my electric bill?
    2. I read a lot of post about their iMac making sound. Are every iMac suppose to work as silent as death? I try to hear mine, it does making "bzzzzz" sound but only if I stick my ear to iMac.
    3. I can't delete file from external hd. It work fine in windows.
    4. In windows usually I run disk defrag every week to keep windows performance, what must I do to keep Mac performance?
    Thanks in advance

    1. In your case, I would use Computer Sleep (which you can do from the Apple Menu) when you are done for the day. Sleep does not use a significant amount of power. It's like a laptop in sleep mode, which drains the battery very slowly; the drain is more than a shut down state, but it is still minimal. For an iMac, it is almost nothing; even an iMac that is connect to power and turned off pulls some power.
Once you wake the iMac and start using it for the day, you should have it set to do Display Sleep, but not Computer Sleep. A lot of users have the iMac go to sleep after X minutes of inactivity, but that makes the iMac sleep and wake repeatedly during the day, and I think that puts more stress on the hardware. So I think one wake at the start of the day and one sleep at the end of the day, with the iMac running in between (with the Display Sleep after X minutes), is best. You can set it up that way in System Preferences +Energy Saver+ pane.
    2. If you have to put your ear on the iMac to hear it, it is fine. The hard drive and fans will make some noise, as they spin, even if they are mostly silent.
    3. If the hard drive is formatted as NTFS, Mac OS X can read it but not write to it (or delete files from it). If that drive is going to be used only on the Mac going forward, it should be re-partitioned and reformatted for Mac. I can provide more details; just post back.
    4. As longs as you keep a good amount of free space on the internal drive, you should not have to worry about doing defrags. Mac OS X defrags smaller files automatically in the background. Larger files and free space are not defragged, but as long as the free space on the drive is large, that will not become a problem for a long long time. It would be best if at least 20% of the startup disk capacity was free space. If it gets closer to 10%, you need to look for ways to off-load some of that data. If it gets below that level, the remaining free space will start to get badly fragmented into tiny pieces, and that can affect Mac OS X performance. Mac OS X uses free space on the startup disk for its operations.

    Hi
Can someone explain what the applications folder is for in my home/user folder ?
It looks the same as the applications section/folder icon , whith the pencil, ruler and paintbrush logo but it contains only one item. I dont understand what it is for ?
    thanks for your time
    didier

It's for your personal third-party applications that you may not want accessible by other users on your computer. It can also be used to keep third-party applications separate from the standard OS X applications. If you're the only user on the computer then you need not use it.

They are common locations for site roots on a Linux server.

  • Clearing network cache worked; ONCE. This is ONLY on facebook. Two users on computer (win 7 Prof), same browswer, both use Facebook. Different results. Why would clearing cache work once??

    Windows 7 professional. Firefox 6.02
    Only on Facebook.
Yet 2 users on computer and 2 different results. I have already uploaded a screen shot. I see more and more users are reporting this, but many more are probably not.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

Hi, Im thinking of using the creative cloud thing is im a home user / individual and only use dreamweaver/flash/fireworks/contribute for non commercial web projects what options do i have for joining ? Any special pricing ? I dont mean to sound rude or anything so please dont take offence but microsoft have special pricing for home users using the premium office apps (im a yearly member)  so why doesnt adobe ?
Hope you dont mind me asking
I do own old macromedia versions plus in terms of adobe i own Photoshop/Premiere Elements4 & Adobe Contribute CS3 incase theres upgrade options for the UK.

im a home user / individual and only use dreamweaver/flash/fireworks/contribute for non commercial web projects what options do i have for joining ?
The same as everyone else...  Either the Full Plan which gives you access to 17 products, plus other services or a la carte (a monthly fee/per product).  If you use more than 3 products, the Full Plan is a much better deal.
Incidentally, Fireworks CS6 is the last version you'll see.  Adobe will not be updating it in the upcoming CC.

My client when going to "Edit Image" in the ICE, does not get the "From My Computer" option that would allow him to upload a new image. Would you have any idea what might be preventing this option from being available for them, only "From Site" shows up. When I try, it comes up for me. Thank you. Wojtek

You like need to set the permission in the user role you set up for that user in the admin.

  • A simple network setup solution for a home user!

Hi, I currently have a Power book PC g4 it has x2 external drives connected to it via time capsule and I have an old G4 clunky desktop downstairs that is connected via Ethernet but some previous owner must've doctored it because it can't run safari or itunes. I want to upgrade to an Imac and use my old powerbook PC g4 basically as a screen and keyboard downstairs to access my main new computer which is upstairs. I'm sick of duplicate files because the two computers currently are run as completely separate but on the same network!! I also have an iphone and itunes which I want to be able to sync and use from either computer so in other words I want all the same programs etc on each computer two screens two keyboards but ideally only one hard drive which is backed up by time capsule. How do I do this easily? Remote Desktop? Currently I have terrible time syncing and numerous software issues because I am trying to run the same software on each computer and they don't like it. I ought to have two licenses to do that but it is too expensive for the home user! I know I'm a bit stupid regarding these matters but geekology doesn't come naturally I'm sorry.

I want to upgrade to an Imac and use my old powerbook PC g4 basically as a screen and keyboard downstairs to access my main new computer which is upstairs.
Screen sharing lets you sort of do this, but don't expect it to be just like sitting in front of the remote computer. The connection will slow everything down and you won't get sound. Plus I'd be surprised if the PB had nearly as large a screen as any new iMac. This is not a realistic solution for day-to-day use.
I'm sick of duplicate files because the two computers currently are run as completely separate but on the same network!!
Sounds to me like you need to replace the old hardware with a new laptop rather than an iMac. Then you can take it everywhere and not have any sync issues.
I am trying to run the same software on each computer and they don't like it. I ought to have two licenses to do that but it is too expensive for the home user!
That's another reason to get a laptop... you could quit breaking the law and just install on one machine. Note, though, that if your software is as badly outdated as your hardware, it may not all work on the current version of the Mac OS (10.6.4, aka Snow Leopard). Check that before buying anything.
