Hooking up iPod to home stereo receiver?
Hi, all. I just bought my first iPod, a classic. I wanted to hook it up to my home stereo receiver, an NAD made back in '88. It has inputs for phono, tape, CD and video.
I went to my local Apple store and told the sales person I wanted to hook up my iPod to my receiver. He sold me a Belkin cable that goes from the headphone jack on the iPod to the RCA inputs on my receiver. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to make it work. So far I have questions:
1. Which input should it go into--tape, CD or video?
2. How loud should I set the volume on the iPod?
3. Do I need to do anything with the "settings" such as the EQ or "clicker"?
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a dozen times in the past month. I ran some searches here before I posted. Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
John

Whichever one makes the most sense for you (and is free to use). I'm assuming all the inputs are identical apart from the labelling to match the input selector on the front of the unit.
Hi, iBod, thanks for your answers.
The only thing I'm still unsure of is the assumption that all the inputs are identical in terms of the voltage or amperage that they can accept. For example, I know that the phono input is designed for a signal that needs preamplification and the tape input is designed for a signal that doesn't. I'm not sure about the CD and video inputs, and what I want to avoid is having the iPod damage the receiver with too much amperage or voltage or whatever.
Anyone know for sure?

John

LG 42LH40 tv - how to hookup to home stereo receiver / speakers
Want to play my new LG 42LH40 thru my home stereo receiver / speakers. There are only a few plugs and I think I have tried them all. Any
H E L P would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you , Roger
Solved!
Go to Solution. Thanks in advance for your help. It is just an older Pioneer receiver with 2 Pioneer speakers. It is only 100 W per channel X 2. I mainly just want to play
thru stereo when I put the television on the sirus satellite radio stations or movies. Had a much cheaper tv before , but was able to just plug in 2 wires
from the receiver to the televison and play thru stereo when I wanted to. Apparently this tv does not have that capability which I find hard to believe.
Any help 'IS' appreciated. Roger -
Connecting iPod to home stereo
What are the best-sounding options to hook up my iPod to my home stereo? Is there a way to hook up my iPod to my home stereo via a digital connection (i.e. a coax or optical connection)? I have a high end home theater receiver with a very good D/A converters and would like to use the D/A converters in my receiver rather than those in the iPod or iPod docking station.
Thanks for your suggestions! Both of those products look like they would do the trick.
From the look of those 2 adapters I would guess that the signal that comes through the iPod dock connection has already been converted from digital to analog (that is unless the adapters have built in D/A converters, which I doubt). That being the case, it doesn't look as though it is possible to run a digital connection from the iPod to a receiver (although maybe it can be done from iTunes on my computer...?).
Thanks again! -
I have connected my iPod to my home stereo as noted, with 3.5 mini jack to RCA to the input, but the sound is very low and poor. I have the volume also listed as noted.
Is anyone using any special type of cable or am I missing something. I've tried it on two different receivers and still coming up with the same results.I used a non iPod cable Mini 3.5 jack on one side and two RCA plugs on the other...
Jack has three posts, so you should be using a connector with three lines/RCA plugs. However, you only plug in the two audio lines to your amplifier/receiver.
Do you mean that if I will buy the iPod video cable it does not work to listen music in home stereo ?
No. I'm saying that if you use a non-Apple cable the line designated as video is actually the right channel audio and the line designated as right channel audio is actually the video output. Apple pulled a little "sneaky" here. -
Hooking up MBP to home theater receiver: Surround sound for games?
I'm looking for a way to hook up my MBP to my home theater receiver to play games in surround sound. From what I've read, it sounds like the digital optical out will only provide 5.1 sound for DVDs, not games.
I have also read about the Griffin Firewave which supposedly provides 5.1 sound from the firewire port...however, it looks like there are five separate outputs from that device (center, and both front and rear speakers), and my receiver's inputs are not arranged in this way, so I don't think this will work for my setup.
Anyone know of a way to do this successfully? It's looking like it's not possible, but wanted to see if there were any solutions I was missing. Thanks!Peep this...http://www.forums.bestbuy.com/bb/board/message?board.id=TV_Home_Theater&thread.id=1153

Ipod to home stereo with usb audio port only
I'm trying to connect my ipod to my home stereo but the stereo only has an audio USB port (not RCA L and R audio ports). Is there a cable available that will go from the ipod (or Dock) to a USB audio port?

Bass distortion when plugging ipod into home stereo
My stereo system(including its speakers) and my ipod (with earphones and on my iMac)both play great. However, when I plug in my ipod to my stereo via the phono jack(no other jacks are free), some of the songs are distorted like my speakers can't handle the low bass. When I play the music directly from the CD on the stereo, it sounds great and there is no distortion.
I'm using the iPod connection kit and the volume is turned down on the iPod when I connect it to the stereo. Setting the iPod to a lower base setting on the equalizer in the iPod helps but it still isn't right.
Total frustration-I'd rather not try the output on any other jacks on my tuner because that would mean disabling a unit like my cassette deck (yes there are people who still own them). As other posters stated, the phono jacks are designed for turntable cartridges. They are much more sensitive than the AUX inputs and have a non-linear frequency response to compensate for the non-linear response of the cartridges. Cartridges put out less signal for low frequencies so the phono pre-amp boosts bass -- which is why you notice the distortion more on bass.
Since you're out of inputs, you could add an external switch. Radio Shack sells a "2-Way Audio/Video Selector Switch (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049644&cp=&pg=1&searchSor t=TRUE&sr=1&retainProdsInSession=1&y=9&origkw=rcaswitch&kw=rcaswitch&x=14&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=search)" for $17. It also switches video signals -- which you don't need -- but you can just ignore those connectors. There may be a cheaper, audio only switch out there. -
Av cables for iPod to home stereo
do av cables (I've now tried Griffin and the Apple cables) always lower the sound volume?
If the sound is lowered, make sure the sound of whatever the ipod is plugged into is high enough. It may just be your computer or whatever its plugged into.

IPod Clas. 80GB - What kind of dock to connect to home stereo (Audio only)
Hi Everyone,
I've been reading all sorts of threads about problems people have been having with the iPod classic (80GB) and dock compatibility. Do you have any recommendations for docks that will actually work ($50-$100 range)? I'm not that technologically savvy. I'm looking for the following:
*Dock to connect the iPod Classic 80GB to a home stereo/receiver
*Audio only - _no video/TV views needed_
*Charges the iPod while connected to the dock (without falling asleep as I hear they often do)
*Remote control (not critical to have the remote but it would be nice to have one that performs minimal actions such as volume control, on/off, skip to next song, etc.
Thanks so much for your help.I assume that the other Sound Blaster cards like the Audigy models also have a 3.5mm jack for digital input. Has anyone tried feeding a coax SPDIF signal into it's And if so, how did you make the connection?
I am really stumped here. I bought the X-Fi specifically for use of its digital input capability. I would have gone with the next higher model which comes with the 5 /4" bay panel (and standard coax SPDIF jacks) but my PC does not have a 5.25" bay available. -
Streaming iTunes music to home stereo
Hi! I'm trying to stream my iTunes music to my home stereo receiver; doesn't have to be wireless, wired is fine. Here's the catch: I'm using NAS and two notebook computers...the iTunes music doesn't live on either notebook, only on the NAS drive. I want to be able to access the music without having to turn on a computer.
Is there a device that I can attach to my stereo receiver and the network that will let me access the music files from the NAS drive? Having a heckuva time with this, any input is most appreciated!Sorry, I missed the bit about wanting to not use a computer.
Try this -> http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_overview.html
You still need a server running but you don't use the computer to access it. -

My new stereo has all kinds of inputs to include HDMI. I hooked my ipod touch 4 to the CD player audio inputs on the back
and it was OK w/the vloume at 30%.
When I hooked/pluged my ipod into the LINE IN audio inputs in the front of my stereo I had to raise the volume up to 50%.
I tried my CD player the same way(from headphone jack to LINE IN on the stereo) and I also have to raise the volume.
I'm useing a stereo cable. ThanksOnce again I've answered my own question. If I knew how to delete my question I would.

Hooking up iPod to Stereo Receiver
Is it possible to have my iPod play through my receiver. I'm crossing my finger I can so I can ditch my CD player.
Thanks. Hoping for a good reply.Yes, you can -- if your receiver has an auxiliary input. It requires a small cable that connects to the earphone jack on the iPod and plugs into the auxiliary input on your receiver. I'm not sure what the cable is called...mine came with my JBL Onstage speaker set.
There may be other ways, but I have used this successfully. -
I currently have a nice home stereo component system. I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music. I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system. I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound. I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also. Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes. This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.
Just would like to know if this could work?Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.
