Hoq ro use the forum

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to use the forum when I need information that does not apply to specific hardware or software. For instance I am trying to learn more about what harm comes about from spikes in voltage. I am participating in Folding at Home, a Stanford cooperative project seeking to find causes of serious deseases. I have been told that running these projects could damage the hard drive under certain voltage spikes.
Where can I find such information?

Be aware that no surge protector will protect against a direct lightning strike. See my user tip here:

Your best bet if you want an extended time to be always on, is to find some way to stay totally off grid.

  • Tips for using the Forum - please read

    I saw this posted on another forum and thought it might help people here understand how to use the Forum and get more benefit from being here:
    Forum Tip: to reply to a post, please use the "Reply" button next to the message (the “arrow” button, second from the left), not the "Reply to the Original Message in this Topic" link.
    Forum Tip: if you have a problem and would like the best personal attention from experienced forum members do not Hi- Jack someone else's post in an attempt to solve your own problem..... start your own topic.... on the surface a lot of problems appear exactly the same..... they very seldom are.... by all means add to someone else's thread but do not use it as a means of solving your own problem.
    Forum Tip: try and describe your problem in your topic heading..... things like 'HELP' are useless.... many good people may pass your post without reading it.... and please, please supply vital info..... what computer, system, application.... version of.... what have you done to fix the problem..... give a full description of the problem and no SHOUTING or bumping allowed.
    Forum Tip: I would also add that it is important that you proof-read your post asking for help before you hit that "post message" button. But if you do make a mistake, or discover that your post is unclear then use the "Edit" button to make changes. The "Edit" button is the one with the pencil on it.
    Forum Tip: What do the different buttons by each message do?
    From left to right, the function of each button is explained below: ??Envelope icon = Email this post. ?Curved arrow = Reply to this message. ?Pencil icon = Edit this message. ?Trash can = Delete this message. ?Purple ribbon with small + sign = Bookmark this post. ?Large - sign = Rate this post negative. ?Large + sign = Rate this post positive. ?Blue or gray bar = Display the ratings on this post. ?
    Pause the mouse pointer on an icon and Help will be displayed.?
    Forum Tip: From the Apple Help and Terms of use files.
    State your question clearly. Include as much information as you can about your issue.
    At minimum, include:
    The operating system you're using and its version.
    The names and versions of other relevant products.
    A complete description of computer and connected peripherals.
    What you were doing when you ran into this issue.
    Example: I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.4 on a 20-inch flat panel iMac with 768 MB of RAM and 15 GB free space on my hard disk. I have an X-brand PDA connected via its USB cradle. iCal 1.5.2 unexpectedly quits when I add an event.
    Forum Tip: Test your answer. Make sure your answer works on your own computer before you post it. Do not guess.
    Forum Tip: Spend some time reading the discussion forums before you post. In the case of the most common problems the question has already been answered and you can find the answer by using the "Search" field in the upper right corner of the page. A simply search on the forms will provide a solution to this problem.
    TIP: Use the Apple Knowledge-base and Support pages for individual products. All of the most common problems can be solved by articles already posted to the K-BASE. Here is the link to the article providing the answer to the above example: Some songs in your iTunes library aren't copied to your iPod.
    The Apple Support Pages are a wealth of information that can help you solve problems and learn about your Macintosh and Apple products.
    Forum Tip: If you post a problem on the forums and then later on found the solution to it by yourself, and no one has posted in your thread, feel free to post in your thread letting others know how you solved the problem. This may help others who would otherwise need a solution for the same similar problem you had.

    Hey Jeff just wanna thank you for taking your time making this post. I just wanted to say hopefully it will help a lot of people. But awhile ago I was thinking and probably will start soon a FAQ post where I add in the most commonly questions people post in here. For example:
    What is the best protective case for the Nano?
    *List many good sites with good cases*
    How Do I reset my Nano?
    Answere here...can't think on top of my head
    Why wont my Nano turn on?
    Reset
    Of course it will be more detailed but you see my point?

  • Being signed out **while I'm using the forums**

    I know these forums automatically log you out when you close the browser and don't have an option to stay logged in, but they are now doing something even more annoying, I'm am being signed out while I using the forums!!! Sometimes, this can be a little as a 5 minutes after I signed in
    I can be reading through a thread when, for no obvious reason, the browser window blanks and the page reloads - and I've been signed out.
    This is a real PITA. Is anyone else seeing this?

    HI,
    I tend to use Firefox for everyday stuff and have used version 3 through 13 on various OS versions form Panther through Lion.
    I occasionally sign in via Safari again across several versions without any issues.
    I have an issue in Lion where  the wireless Mouse that came with my iMac is a bit over sensitive to me trying to take hold of it for corrections and interpreting my finger movements and scrolling strokes.
    This causes the "Do you want to Leave Page" message that I can not always get rid of.
    Force Quitting will solve the drop down not accepting I don't want to leave, for about 20- 30 presses but Firefox will actually login in automatically when I restart it.
    I would tend to look for "Breaks" in your Internet service, particularly if you are using WiFi as this can be upset by interference from other nearby routers.

  • How to use the forums and get (helpful) help!

    Please, I beg you, read the Javadoc on the class you are asking about:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/index.html
    Have you looked for an answer in Suns training documentation, tutorials and Java specification?
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/infodocs/
    Post your code so that it is readable:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/faq.jsp#messageformat
    Of course, is everyone followed these rules (including me) these forums would probably be a very lonely place ;)

    You either use single quotes in the SQL string, or (my preferred method) use a Prepared Statement
    String sql = "select count(cc.id) from customers c, creditcards cc where c.cc_id = '" + ccID+ "' ";
    // or better IMO
    sql = "select count(cc.id) from customers c, creditcards cc where c.cc_id = ?");
    PreparedStatement pstmt = con.prepareStatement(sql);
    sql.setString(1, ccID);The prepared statement protects you agains SQL injection attacks, and any values that would need escaping in SQL. What would happen if someone entered a single quote in the ccID field?

  • Using the forum

    I used to use it everyday befor the change. I just cannot figure out how to simply search through the thread topics for Flex only. I thought changes would make it easier, this is amazingly difficult.

    It is a little bit of a pain, but in the upper right corner, there is the search function. I do so (entering my search term), then Once the results show up, there is a "More options" link. In there you can narrow down which forum to search.
    I actually book marked this page so that I can go right to the page where I have the search fields where I can narrow down my results.

  • Please vote using the forum poll!

    At the right side of this forum page, you will find a forum poll "Do you generate UIX or JSP pages with JHeadstart?". • How to sign in to the forum using Firefox w/ NoScript

    Apparently this site uses "suspicious cross-site POST requests" according to NoScript in Firefox.
    Until this changes, you'll need to tweak the NoScript settings a little in order to be able to sign into your community.vzw.com account with NoScript XSS sanitizing enabled.  (I'll assume you've already allowed scripts from vzw.com and/or lithium.com - I'm pretty sure you'll need those enabled in order to use the forums at all)
    1) Open your NoScript options in Firefox:
    Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions (tab) -> NoScript -> Options
    2) In the NoScript options click the "Advanced" tab.
    3) In the advanced tab click the "XSS" sub-tab.
    4) In the "Anti-XSS Protection Exceptions" text box on the "XSS" tab add the following line:
    ^https://signin\.verizon\.com/sso/authsso/forumLogin\.jsp.*$
    5) Click OK and then close the Add-ons window.
    6) Close your tab/window for community.vzw.com and try again.
    7) If this doesn't work you may also need to delete any cookies you have from vzw.com and/or close Firefox all together and try again.
    Details on the problem, how I identified it, and how I came across this solution
    For the past two days I've been trying to get my community.vzw.com account setup and running and no matter what I tried, I would always end up on a screen that said my user name and password was invalid.  To add to the confusion I was able to reset my password on the account using the "Forgot username/password" link and it STILL wouldn't work.
    Then I noticed that for a split second right after I press the enter key to login there is a small notification bar at the top of the browser window.  It goes away too fast to read, but I was able to notice the "NoScript" icon on the bar before it disappeared.  So, I enabled scripts globally in NoScript and STILL had the same problem.  Disabling/Removing NoScript all together fixed the problem and I was able to login.  Of course that's not an acceptable solution, but at least I knew for sure that the problem was being caused by NoScript now.
    Recalling past situations with sites not playing well with NoScript I remembered that there were NoScript messages logged in the Firefox error console (Tools -> Error console) when some actions are blocked.  So, I enabled NoScript again, tried to login, opened the error console and sure enough, there's a message saying:
    [NoScript XSS] Sanitized suspicious upload
    to [https://signin.verizon.com/sso/authsso/forumLogin.jsp<some data here>]
    from [http://www22.verizon.com/content/sso/signin.aspx?<some more data here>]:
    transformed into a download-only GET request.
    So, I took the URL from the "to ..." section of the message and entered it into the equivalent regular expression into the exceptions and tada!  It worked!  I can now sign into the community forums and still have the protection of NoScript to keep me safe from other sites.
    Enjoy!

    Wow!  What a nice description of the issue you are having and resolution steps!  I have also passed this along to our IT folks to have a look.
    Thank you for being so thorough I am sure there are others that may run into this!

  • Important! Please use the public forum for your questions!

    Dear forum visitors,
    Please always use the forum mechanism to ask technical, workflow and creative questions and do not contact me and other Community Experts or Adobe employees with private messages. We all appreciate your trust and respect for our work, but there are two things you should consider:
    - Just like you, we all have a "normal" life. Sending private messages does not accelerate the process, if we are not around. Just like I was not here the last 24 hours 'cos I was visiting my grandmother and then dancing the night away, others have children and a family to take care of. And I think a bit of sleep is okay every now and then, too.
    - Results from private messages are not covered by the search engine and archiving mechanism for apparent reasons. Therfore at some point that info will be lost and future visitors looking for help will not be able to find it, meaning that we will have to answer the same questions over and over. This can of course not always be avoided, but in the interest of everyone, we should try to cut down redundancy and spent our time as efficiently as we can. Personally I don't get paid for this, so I'm investing my spare time. Again, I think doing a few other things in it instead of constantly monitoring forums would be okay...
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Why isn't my query using the index?

    I have a query that inserts values for engines in a grid; it uses a static date table to determine the day in week, or
    week in year (depending on different standards, the DBA can configure this table to their business's likings). I have
    two indexes on this table:
    create table d_date (
         date_key number(5) not null,
         sql_calendar_date timestamp(3) null,
         year_id number(5) null,
         month_id number(3) null,
         day_id number(3) null,
         year_end_biz_date timestamp(3) null,
         qtr_end_biz_date timestamp(3) null,
         month_end_biz_date timestamp(3) null,
         week_end_biz_date timestamp(3) null,
         quarter_id number(3) null,
         week_id number(3) null,
         day_in_year number(5) null,
         day_in_month number(3) null,
         day_in_week number(3) null,
         month_name char(3) null,
         day_in_week_name char(3) null,
         month_type_code char(1) null,
         week_type_code char(1) null,
         date_type_code char(1) null,
         weekend_flag char(1) null,
         holiday_flag char(1) null,
         from_datetime timestamp(3) null,
         to_datetime timestamp(3) null,
         current_flag char(1) null,
         constraint d_date_pkey primary key (date_key)
         ) tablespace dim;
    create index d_date_dy on d_date(year_id, day_in_year) tablespace_dim_idx;
    create index d_date_ww on d_date(year_id, week_id) tablespace_dim_idx;Now, when I run a query to insert the week id into a table based on two values, the year_key and day_in_year_key,
    it should use the d_date_dy index correct?
    Here is what the query looks like:
    INSERT INTO F_ENGINE (YEAR_KEY,MONTH_KEY,WEEK_IN_YEAR_KEY,DAY_IN_YEAR_KEY,DAY_IN_MONTH_KEY,HOUR_IN_DAY_KEY, Q_HOUR_IN_DAY_KEY,
      GRID_KEY,ENGINE_KEY,TIME_STAMP,ENGINE_CPU_UTIL,ENGINE_CPU_GRID_UTIL,MEMORY_TOTAL_BYTE, MEMORY_FREE_BYTE,DISK_FREE_MEGABYTE,

    SELECT EXTRACT(YEAR FROM START_DATETIME),EXTRACT(MONTH FROM START_DATETIME), DD.WEEK_ID,
      TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(START_DATETIME, 'DDD')), EXTRACT(DAY FROM START_DATETIME),EXTRACT(HOUR FROM START_DATETIME),
      FLOOR(EXTRACT(MINUTE FROM START_DATETIME)/15)*15,DG.GRID_KEY,DE.ENGINE_KEY, START_DATETIME,CPU_UTIL,DS_CPU,MEMORY,
      FREE_MEMORY,FREE_DISK,PROCESSES,ID,PE.GRID,DG.GRID_NAME,:B1 ,1
    FROM P_ENGINE PE, D_GRID DG, D_ENGINE DE, D_DATE DD
    WHERE PE.GRID = DG.GRID_ID AND DG.CURRENT_FLAG = 'Y' AND PE.ID = DE.ENGINE_ID AND DE.GRID_KEY = DG.GRID_KEY AND
      DE.CURRENT_FLAG = 'Y' AND PE.BATCH_ID = :B1 AND DD.YEAR_ID = EXTRACT(YEAR FROM START_DATETIME) AND
    DD.DAY_IN_YEAR = TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(START_DATETIME,'DDD'))
    ORDER BY EXTRACT(YEAR FROM START_DATETIME),EXTRACT(MONTH FROM START_DATETIME),
      EXTRACT(DAY FROM START_DATETIME),EXTRACT(HOUR FROM START_DATETIME),FLOOR(EXTRACT(MINUTE FROM START_DATETIME)/15)*15,
      DG.GRID_KEY,DE.ENGINE_KEY
    Here is the explain plan:
    Operation Object Object Type Order Rows Size (KB) Cost Time (sec) CPU Cost I/O Cost
    INSERT STATEMENT
    SORT ORDER BY
         HASH JOIN
           HASH JOIN
             HASH JOIN
              TABLE ACCESS FULL D_GRID TABLE 1 2 0.316 3 1 36887 3
              TABLE ACCESS FULL D_ENGINE TABLE 2 10 0.410 3 1 42607 3
             PARTITION LIST SINGLE   5 1434 344.496 9 1 2176890 9
              TABLE ACCESS FULL P_ENGINE TABLE 4 1434 344.496 9 1 2176890 9
                TABLE ACCESS FULL D_DATE TABLE 7 7445 283.550 19 1 3274515 18Now it is obviously not using the index for the d_date table since it is doing a full table access.
    Does this have something to do with the fact that I am using extract(), to_number(), to_char() functions in my WHERE clause that it is not allowing the use of the index?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    -Tim

    It's difficult to tell just from this. For one thing, you didn't post your query using the forum format tags, so it's hard to read and you didn't post your Oracle version.
    In the query, you don't always prefix columns with the table alias. That makes it impossible for us (and maintainers of this code) to know at a glance which table a column is in.
    It's possible that performing functions on a column will disable the index. Do your other tables have indexes? Do you have updated statistics on all the tables?
    The main reason the optimizer will not use an index is because it thinks it cheaper not to.

  • When will the issue of unacceptable performance of the forums get resolved?

    Obviously there are major problems nowadays when using the Forums.
    Not only many times you don't even get it at all, getting the 'Experiencing technical problems' message, quite often it takes about 5 minutes to post a message, and after checking it appears three times.
    Oracle can not say it is not aware of these issues, as they have been reported many times.
    Apparently addressing these issues is not getting much priority.
    For a professional company this is hardly acceptable.
    Does Oracle plan to resolve the ongoing issues, or do they want people to learn to live with it, or simply go away, and not answer any questions anymore?
    Just wondering.

  • I had an issue when trying to register with the forums, but I am having problems speaking someone because I am not a "registered" member?

    Dear forum member(s), I was excited at the possibilities that Firefox offered. I have been looking forward to researching on the forums, but I made a blunder when registering.
    I changed my email password some time ago and forgot that I had done so. I also have a second email which is similar to my address I was registering and I think I was actually using my the second email information until I caught the mistake.
    Shortly thereafter I received an email with my user ID but no password. I had been assuming that I would receive a onetime computer generated password, but I wasn’t sure how things were supposed to go. After closely studying the language of the email, I was led to the conclusion that I would login with my original information I had provided.
    My final attempt to register failed and I can’t explain why. I am positive that I had the right user id and password and now I am in limbo. I registered with the "Add-ons" section in 15 minutes. I was never told I was banned, but I was never told I am now a member. Thanks for reading.
    Sincerely,
    reel4

    Not at all. I have never posted to the forums. The only thing I have written is what you see in this thread. I registered at add-ons section and things were fine. I wanted to use the forums, because I like to learn what I can. The problems began when I tried to register at the forms. At first, I thought my login from add-ons would work at the forums. It didn't. I honestly don't know if there is separate login and validation for each firefox/mozilla section.
    When I attempted to register with the forums, I messed up when trying to login because I made too many attempts. I was either using another password from a second email or I misread those weird words they use to make sure you are not a bot.
    I don't know what exactly was written but they basically wanted to take a look at things. I felt that was reasonable. After all - I felt like a moron for not being able to read those contorted word tests.
    Then they sent me my user id but with no new password so I assumed my current password was the same as the one I originally gave. Long story short, I tried to login again- all three times I failed. They never banned me or told me anything. I have not heard from anyone or thing. To It's like they have just walked away. I just don't understand what has happened and why no one will tell me anything. So... no - I am not banned. When I do bet blocked after I logoff, it has the same effect as a ban. I guess I have been ousted. I just wish this I could get this matter resolved. I changed my password and email so maybe that will keep around.
    It's a strange situation and I am at loss for words. I even wrote the forum people an apology letter describing the facts above in details and apologizing for the inconvenience. I actually apologized for being an idiot.
    One last thing - at the outset of the post - I told you they gave me one last opportunity to login and it failed. I know for a fact I had the information correct. I had even written my password somewhere else on the screen to where I could see each character to verify the pass word was correct and then cut and paste.
    James - who knows what the future holds but I must thank you my friend. At the very least, I could tell my story. It is all so strange.

  • After reinstalling Photoshop 12 I get an Error 213:11 when I launch the program and the associated msg tells me to contact Adobe Support but they say I eed to go through the forum

    How can I get past an error 213:11. Adobe support says I need to use the forum to get this issue resolved.

    Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details. This is a licensing error that could have al lsorts of potential causes.

  • I can't stay logged in in the forum

    Recently I am always logged out when I close my browser. (Chrome).
    It doesn't ask my password so I assume the cookie was successfully written but nevertheless when I close the browser I have to sign in again next time I use the forum.
    In the past I was automatically logged in but that is no more the case.
    What could have caused this?

    I logged-on to the forum last night, yet with a fresh browser just now I found I had to try to log in.  I say "try", because the login process never finished - it just sat there and spun.  So I closed that IE browser window and opened another one, clicked the "Sign In" link again, then it went briefly to the login screen, then here, where I could post.
    As far as I can tell, nothing's improved.
    This web site development stuff has apparently become nearly impossible to do (even the US Government can't manage it).
    As a 37 year software engineering veteran I find this situation apalling!  Adobe people, you need to take a hard look at what's going on here!  Your company has been able to maintain a state of the art package (e.g., Photoshop) for over 20 years.  Maybe you should ask the folks over in the Photoshop team what things they go through to make sure they can keep engineering that complex product without it coming down in flames.

  • Can I restore just one app. using the Install disc, or must all items be restored?

    Can I selectively restore just one app. using the Install disc, or will all items be automatically restored?

    Thanks BDAqua;
    This is my first time using the forums, so I am not certain about protocol. However, your quick reply is appreciated.
