Hosting suggestions

hey all, i have just finished a site using dw cs3. i have a domain purchased through godaddy and planned on using them for hosting. this is my first website and i was looking for some suggestions/warnings/recommendations when uploading a site to a server. i am not exactly sure how to do it. ive read about a program called fetch, also know that there are server options right in DW. ill figure it out one way or another, just wanted to see what everyone else was doing and their thoughts on it.
Thanks!

there are a million and one ftp programs out there, filezilla is a freebee which is pretty decent. cuteftp, smartftp, fetch et al are all good options as well. clearly depends on your needs, and your own preference. dreamweavers own ftp is pretty good, but as mentioned some people love it and some people hate it.
speaking of hating - go daddy i've found to be the most user unfriendly hosting service around. thats just my opinion. also their site is really ugly!

  • Java applet UK web host suggestion?

I have made my Java applet and just about got it to working my webpage, but I am finding it difficult to find a web host who supports Java applets - they say that they are "resource heavy" and have "problems with Linux servers", great! Well, I need something none the less, a small website about 3MB in total, I don't know how much bandwidth and it has to support a .co.uk domain name I already own --and not cost much per month.
Of course I have done a lot of Googling on this but I'm not very good at it. Any suggestions...

Either you've communicated something wrong or they are talking crap.
Java Applets in their own right don't tax the server any more than static web sites do, as they are executed entirely on the client computer.
If you want to run some Java server for the applet to communicate with, then it's a different story.

  • Discussions Hosts: Suggestion for "My Posts" management

    Hello,
Whenever I look at "My Public Profile" and I see that points have gone up, I always want to track them to see where a "solved" or "helpful" came from. Recently, I came up with an interesting idea that would solve this dillema:
If you click on "My Posts", of course, there will be your posts. Next to each title of the subject, I think it would be very nice if there was next to the blue/transparent dots (topic viewed or not) a column for little stars for each post.
If you didn't earn anything from a post, the star is transparent/white. If you got a "helpful", then there is a little yellow helpful-star symbol there. Same goes for "solved" stars, except that each little star in the column is the same size.
If this idea was established, I'd be really glad about it, and it would quite help me in what I want to do.
I'm also wondering, has anyone else been wanting to do this kind of thing, or think that this idea would be nice?
    Thanks,
    -Kylene

    Hello Kylene,
"I'm also wondering, has anyone else been wanting to do this kind of thing, or think that this idea would be nice?"
Yes, this has been asked once, I don't remember whether or not a Host replied the usual "thanks, we've added it to The List".
Me too I think it would be a good idea,
although I'd find it even better with, in adition to the transparent star, the small yellow one and the small green one, a forth color (blue or red for example) for the Helpfuls that were awarded by another member...
(...as you know, to date it's only the original poster who can award points)
    Thanks for the reminder!

  • Web hosting suggestions

I'm looking for a web hosting service that is affordable, provides e-mail, and is good with video content. My site has lots of quicktime movies on it and I'm wondering if any knows of any good hosts for video stuff?

    Hi Greg
Not sure that we should be promoting other hosting company's on a forum that is linked to .Mac. We use a uk based company and if you e-mail me I will give you the details.

    Hello.
Today I got the opportunity to work with a Muse user with the same issue after performing the troubleshooting steps in the post above we decided to contact the host.
Later i came to know that host took Muse user's IP and they were able to unblock it and muse started connecting to FTP host.
I another scenario Host suggested Muse user to add :21 to the FTP address and then Muse was able to connect.
    Eg    ftp.domain.com:21
Please try the 2 suggestion above and let me know if it works.

  • Ip forwarding and weak host difference?

Hi, this is a somewhat hypothetical question about 2008 R2, but here goes... in situations where the NIC that can route the reply packet isn't the one that the packet arrived on, we know that the packet is dropped. Reading posts and blogs, I see that ip
forwarding is suggested. That makes sense. I also see weak host suggested. That also makes sense. Some posts rather breezily suggest either as if they're the same (which they're not)! This http://workinghardinit.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/reflections-on-getting-windows-network-load-balancing-to-work-part-2/ intriguingly
says that using weak hosts is "more atomic" but doesn't explain further. That got me thinking: in situations where either will work, which is best? Is there a best practice? Or, is one more scalable, future proofed, granular etc?

"If you enable the forwarding only, then the mode can possibly be the weak host mode but not the strong host mode.
But if you enable the weak host mode only, then the mode can possibly be the weak host mode but not the strong host mode."
They say the same thing - so does this mean that forwarding and weak host are actually the same? (I suspect that there
    is a typo there!)
"Besides, "weak host mode" is the concept to "IP layer" while the "forwarding" is the concept to A"router".
I get that weak host is an IP concept and forwarding is all about routing, but that really only explains it conceptually (as in "one is
to do with routing but the other is to do with IP"). What I'm trying to get to the bottom of is: what
    in practice is the difference?
I'm OK if someone says "actually there's no difference at all - two commands written by two different developers that were intended to be different but turned out to do exactly the same thing in practice". ;)

  • Suitable web host/hosting package for working through PHP solutions 2nd edition

    Hi all,
I'm learning PHP and MySQL and working through the David Powers title PHP Solutions (second edition) and I'm a bit stuck in Chapter 4 on the point of where to locate your include files. The book says that for security reasons its seriously worth considering locating all of your includes files especially those containing passwords etc, outside of your server root and then adjusting the include_path.
I don't think I can edit the php.ini file as my hosting package is shared hosting and I can't afford to pay so much more for the kind of hosting package that will allow me to edit the php.ini file, so then I'm looking at the options of using a .htaccess file to change the configuration or using  include_path() but my web hosts seem very restrictive as to the use of .htaccess and also I don't think my web hosts offer a folder outside of the web root to put my includes files. One of them has even said "files outside of the public_html will be visible and it will turn up that your website will not work properly or not work at all". This web host suggests alternatively using htpasswd and htaccess to password protect folders containing sensitive data.
Can anyone recommend a good web host and hosting package that will support what I'm trying to achieve working through this book?
    Many thanks.

I'm glad to hear that Power's makes that recommendation. It is wise to put passwords and data access files outside the web root.
Have you tested this on your current web host? Using the file manager they provide, can you go above public_html and create directories and add files?
I don't use shared hosting so I can't suggest a host for you, but if it's really true that you can't add files above the web root and you can't activate htaccess files, then find a host that does. I would also recommend going with a host that uses cPanel, just because it makes it easier to move from host to host, and make sure you get PHP version 5.3 and mysql version 5.
I don't find it convenient to put all the include files above the root, just the password and data access files.

  • Published changes show in Safari but do not get transmitted to hosting service (via FTP)

Publishing. Changes to pages no longer change color of page icon but get published as Entire Site. They show correctly in Visit. But they do not reach hosting service for actual public change.

II am using iWeb FTP, which has worked until recently. The other thing I notice is that icons for changed pages no longer change color when a corection is made. But if I publish entire site and then visit, the changes show.
However when I open site independedntly, not changes appear. GoDaddy (my new host) suggests that Visit is taking me (in Safari) to some kind of preview version ather than the published web version.

  • Splitting video in events

Have just loaded i life 08 and successfully imported my first video from my cam corder. I have watched all the video tutorials. My question is, I want to split video footage and create an additional event. However if I highlight the start of the second event and then go to file drop down to split event before selected clip it is grayed out and can't be done. Any body have any Ideas what I have done wrong.

iDvd is a DVD authoring app. It doesn't edit video footage. You may want to post the question in the iMovie forum. That way it will get the attention it deserves. < moved by Host >
    Suggestion:
Step 1. Start with the iMovie Tutorial here:

  • Basic Mail and DNS help

I'm sorry to ask something that I'm sure has been dealt with many times. I've searched all around and found many threads that seem very close, but I guess there's some little difference that always ends up confusing me. I also get confused by what seems to me to be ambiguous terminology. Anyway, I'm pulling my hair out, so I've finally decided to ask for help.
I'm sorry that this post is so long -- I just don't know what bit of info might be important. I'm trying to give a detailed description of my setup so experienced people can give me better advice.
    Here's my situation.
    EXTERNAL DNS
    (1) I've purchased a domain name through my ISP. Let's call it mydomain.tld
    (2) This comes with a very rudimentary control panel that allows me to define 10 A records, 10 CNAME records and 10 MX records.
    (3) I have defined an A record pointing to my static WAN IP.
    (4) I have deifined an MX record pointing to the same static WAN IP.
    (5) This seems to be OK, because if I "dig mydomain.com" or "dig MX mydomain.com" I get my static WAN IP.
    MY LITTLE NETWORK
    (6) The Internet comes into a 4-port router/modem. (192.168.0.x) This is my "Outer LAN"
    (7) One port goes to a Mini with SLS -- Say it's on 192.168.0.99
    (8) Another port goes to another router (192.168.1.x) This is my "Inner LAN"
    (9) I have forwarded port 80 through the outer router to the SLS. That seems to work fine.
    (10) I have also forwarded port 25 through the outer router to the SLS. That does not work yet.
    The SLS
    (11) When I did the initial install, I gave the SLS the name mydomain.private (I some places, Server Admin gives the name mydomain.local ... I don't know why.)
    (12) I set up the INTERNAL DNS on the SLS to handle all initial DNS queries from my LANs, with my ISP's DNS as a forwarder.
    (13) I set up the DHCP on my routers to assign the internal DNS server on the SLS as the primary DNS, and my ISP's DNS server as the secondary -- so clients on my LANS are looking at the right DNS servers.
    (14) DNS seems to work fine on both my LANs.
    BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER:
If anyone sees any problems with what I have done so far -- Please say so.
    ... and now THE MAIL
    (15) I created a few network user accounts on SLS.
    (16) Using squirrelmail, they were able to send and receive messages to each other -- using a browser on the SLS machine or a browser on any other computer on the LANs. But this is all resolved through the internal DNS, using mydomain.private
    (17) Mail clients (Mail.app) on the LAN can also retrieve these messages. But I can't send mail using a regular mail client ... and squirrelmail only works internally with mydomain.private
Now, I want to get my mail server working normally for sending and receiving mail both within my LAN and over the Internet. And here is where I get confused. There's the EXTERNAL DNS server that clients on the Internet will use to find my server -- and there's the INTERNAL DNS server that clients on my LAN (?and possibly some services on the server itself?) will use. Then there are terms like HOSTNAME and DOMAIN NAME ... and I'm not really very clear as to the disnction (despite, or because of, reading so many articles). I don't know where I should be using mydomain.com and where I should be using mydomain.private)
in the Mail Service Configuration Assistant:
    (18) I use mydomain.com for both the Domain Name (Enter the local Internet domain name) and for the Host name (enter the Internet host name of this mail system). These match the A and MX records of my EXTERNAL DNS (ie. what I see on my ISP's control panel).
    (19) To try to make things easier to start with, I enabled all options for both secure and non-secure authentication.
    (20) I added a host alias mydomain.private
    (21) Setup appeared to go fine.
    (22) Back on the LAN, "dig MX mydomain.com" gives my static WAN IP
    (23) In the outer router, port 25 is forwarded to the SLS
    (24) In SLS, in Server Assistant, In DNS, Mail Exchanger is set to mydomain.private -- this works for sending mail within the LAN only.
    (25) I tried changing this to mydomain.com, and then nothing worked.
    (26) The Nameserver for my primary zone is set to:
    Zone: mydomain.private.
    Hostname: mydomain.private
When I try to send a message FROM an account on the Internet TO an account on the SLS, I get an error: "Couldn't find a Mail Exchanger or IP address."
When I try to send a message FROM an account on the SLS TO an account on the Internet, the Mail Delivery System returns it to the sender.
Well, that's where I stand now.
I hope people reading will give me some ideas of some other paths to run down, and tests or experiments to try. I'm not afraid of the command line -- but I'm not very experienced with it either -- so maybe there are some useful diagnostic commands that I should know about.
My ISP is not blocking port 80.
Is there some way that I can tell if my ISP is blocking port 25? (Their customer support doesn't know anything.)
Thanks a lot for your attention and patience.
    (Intentionally Blank)

Oops. Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
Thanks David_x. That was really helpful information. It opened up more questions, but it gave me some good ideas of things to try.
I reinstalled SLS. This time I used my FQDN and accepted the installer's
    David_x wrote:
Firstly, remove the secondary from DHCP. Otherwise clients will 'randomly' use info from either inside or outside DNS. You want them to use the internal DNS so use that alone.
I see. So "secondary" doesn't mean "in case the primary fails" -- it means something more like "another one in the pool of possible DNS servers". Doesn't that present a problem in the event that my server is down? Why is this preferred as opposed to clearly defined prioritized list? (Then there is another issue of some services using mDNSResponder in some cases and resolv.conf -- at least that's fairly well documented.)
    DNS & Hostname, etc...
If you want to be able to access services from inside and outside your LAN, using the server's hostname (same one inside and out), then set up your internal DNS using your .com domain, same as is used externally.
Okay. Got it. I did that with the reinstall.
DNS is only an "IP lookup" system so you want the hostname inside to resolve to your LAN IP and the hostname outside to resolve to your WAN IP. Forget about the .private stuff - it just confuses things.
    Okay. Thanks.
    Public MX Record…
    (3) I have defined an A record pointing to my static WAN IP.
    (4) I have deifined an MX record pointing to the same static WAN IP.
The above may not be what you meant to say but just to check… Your public MX record should resolve to your A record hostname. Then the hostname resolves to an IP address. Your MX record should not be pointing directly to an IP address.
Yes. You are right. That's very good of you to point that out. I did have it pointing to an IP address. (My ISPs simplistic DNS control panel is in Spanish, and I was confused about whether "nombre" referred to a name or number.) I had discovered this through brute force trial and error. This sort of thing was very difficult to test, since I don't have control over many of the DNS parameters (like TTL). That was probably my main problem. Now I can send and receive mail from my server to outside accounts, and from outside accounts to my server.
At the moment, I can't retrieve mail on my server from a computer outside of my network. I suppose that's an authentication problem, or a hostname alias or something. I'll continue trying different things.
    Testing Port 25...
To see if port 25 is blocked, get an outside computer and "telnet your-wan-ip 25". If you can switch on logging at the firewall for your port-forwarding rule, all the better as this will be only sure way to see that it is reaching the WAN firewall.
By "logging at the firewall", I suppose you mean at the router? Alright. I still have to try this. From my point of view, this kind of suggestion is great advice.
Instead of using an outside computer, would it be possible to do this sort of checking using an anonymizing proxy? I suppose they usually don't allow telnet.
...any chance this could be tested from my "inner" LAN? (My guess is that it needs to be from a computer that is "upstream" relative to the "outer" router. I'm under the impression that routers handle upstream connections differently than downstream connections, this wouldn't work.)
After that, test at server... open Terminal and enter: "tcpdump -v tcp port 25"
Tcpdump will listen on port 25. When the telnet session gets port-forwarded, you will see a listing of information about the packet received. If you get nothing then the port-forwarding is not working.
So, to make sure I've got this straight:
Turn on logging on port 25 in my outer router.
Go to Terminal on my server.
Start tcpdump listening on port 25.
Take my netbook out to some WiFi hotspot (for example).
    Telnet into my server.
Come home and check my logs.
(Maybe I should check out this VPN stuff.)
I'm looking to see that the router forwarded the port correctly.
    That's great trouble shooting advice.
Now you'll see how slow I am. I'm reading along, running through all of this in my head, imagining all of my steps ... And only now do I realize that if (as of my latest experiments) my server has been able to receive mail from outer accounts -- then the router must be forwarding things and the mail server is, to some extent, working fine. Okay. I'm still going to go through these steps anyway to see what it should look like.
Server Admin: Domain Name & Hostname...
The Domain Name is just your domain name... e.g., mydomain.com
The Hostname is ideally the same as your external MX hostname... e.g., mail.mydomain.com
The main thing about the Hostname is that this is what your server will report as it's HELO name to other connecting mail servers. Some will check this against the public MX record and use any discrepancy to increase likelihood of spam filtering.
Is there really any reason that a small setup like mine should use "mail.mydomain.com" instead of just "mydomain.com". Since I don't have a separate machine dedicated to mail, maybe it's just an unnecessary complication. I was just copying what I've seen around (configuration for mail and articles I've read).
Under Advanced-> Hosting, tick the "Include server's domain as local host alias".
Okay. What exactly does this do? I understand the words, but not the sense of the phrase. (I find this happening a lot.)
    Checking Server Settings…
Use a terminal session to debug any basic configuration issues on the server. The error responses are much more informative than just using a mail client. Open Terminal in a local computer… "telnet server-lan-ip 25" and carry out following…
I could connect with telnet to port 25 on the server:
    (1) From a remote computer.
    (2) From a local client.
    (3) From the server
As we step through the experiment, you will see that we have a few problems.
    Server Response:
    Trying...
    Connected to fqdn.or.ip.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 fqdn.or.ip ESMTP Postfix
#1. Declare where you are sending the email from:
    HELO something.name
You can use a real hostname but the mail server has no choice but to accept whatever you type.
    Response: 250 servers.hostname
    So far, so good.
On remote computers, I couldn't get any further than this.
    I'll try again tonight.
    #2. Give senders address:
    MAIL FROM:<mail@senderdomain>
    Response: 250 Ok
I could get this to work for either a local email account or a remote email account, from telnet sessions initiated either on the server itself or on a local client.
    #3. Give recipients address:
    RCPT TO:<mail@otherdomain>
    Response: 250 Ok
Here, I did not get consistent results.
From a local account to a remote account, I could get "Relay access denied".
From a local account to a local account, I could get "Recipient address rejected. Service is unavailable. But this was not consistent. I used three different local accounts, and all could send or receive at one time or another.
    #4. Start composing the message:
    DATA
Response: 354 End data with <CR><LF>.<CR><LF>
#5. Type a message. Finish with a single "." on a line on it's own.
Response: 250 Ok: queued as dah,de,da
#6. Close the connection by typing: QUIT
Response:221 Bye... Connection closed by foreign host.
    suggestion for hostname.
Were you going to add something else here?
Well, any comments or insights that you might add will be very much appreciated. I'm going to continue sending and receiving and making little tweaks. It's really pretty confusing for a newbie. I thank you a lot for all the time you spent reading and helping me.

  • SLD questions

I am trying to set up an SLD.
I have a portal and sld running on the same j2ee (standalone)
I also have an ecc 5 (abap standalone) instance.
    Question #1
Do you need an abap instace to use the sld.
    Question #2
When you set up the SLD bridge, to which box are you pointing to?
For instance, if I had just the portal and SLD running on the same J2EE, would you point the SLD to "localhost"
    Question #3
Where do you find the "roles"
    LcrUser
    LcrClassWriter Create
    LcrInstanceWriter
    LcrInstanceWriter
    LcrInstanceWriter
    LcrInstanceWriter
    LcrAdministrator Administrative
Are they in the J2ee that the sld runs on?
    Thanks
    Jeremy

    Hi,
    Q1: ABAP not required
Q2: bridge points to the J2ee host, suggest give fully qualified host name
Q3: These roles by default are not present.
The authorizations for the roles are present. Please download the SLD post-instn guide for 640. There you find a page which talks about which authorizations should be maintained for each role.
    Go to http://<SLD-host>:<port>
    login into user management.
Create a new role with the desired name (example: LcrUser) use the same case as required. Assign the desired authorizations to the role.
Then you could later assign the role to group and then user.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,

  • Solaris 10 system frozen.

    Hi!
First, excuse me my bad english, and due this is the first time I wrote here, also if this isn't the right forum.
We have a nas machine with a complete install of solaris 10. All is make in ZFS. The systems install is a zpool, and we have two zpool more. All was working fine, up to one or two weeks ago.
Sometimes we need to restart the machine, because any service (ssh, samba, ftp or lighttpd) is ready. If we make a ping to the machine its answer right, but we are unable to enter it via SSH, or use any other service.
Due the inexperience with this system (we have only experience with FreeBSD or GNU/Linux), we can't see what's the problem (doesn't appear anything in any /var/log archive log).
Please, anybody could help us with any kind of url, information, etc?
This is the machine's dmesg. Tell me is you need any informacion.

All of the services listed are network related so I was heading in that direction. You might want to look at /var/adm/messages which is were normal system messages are written to on a Solaris system.I cannot see anything related about a services/network/disks problem in /var/adm/messages.
Also, instead of nmap try http://www.ilkda.com/op.htm instead and see what that says for open ports on the system.
Good. But this is a script to run in the system, and when we have this problem I cannot make a login into the system. I made the nmap scan because I was confused due the imposibility to access to any service, but to have ping answer from the server.
So the question becomes: You had to reboot because system services stop responding? From your post it looks like they are network related but you think it has something to do with the disk setup instead? The big problem: I have experience with FreeBSD and GNU/Linux systems, but this is my first experience with Solaris (in other words; I'm a Solaris newbie).
At first I thought it was a problem regarding the disk or system ZFS, but now I have serious doubts about whether this is a problem of network/services or disk.
I haven't enought clues to determine (today) if this is a disk or a service/network problem, because only one time I can at the datacenter when occurs the problem, I connected a monitor and a usb keyboard; the monitor displayed the normal screen (no syslog information about any problem), and the usb-keyboard doesn't work and was completely impossible to make a login and watch were service, network, etc.
The link to ipnodes is correct depending on the version of Solaris that you are running btw. Yes. According to the documentation in Solaris 10 ipnodes is a link to the hosts file.
Please help clarify where the issue is.Excuse me. I can understand that you have problems trying to help me due my lack of information and my bad english. But I'm confident that with your help, we can know, at least, what its happening with this problem.
    Thank you very much Alan.

  • Should my file name be index?

Does my main page file name need to be index?  Or can I name it something relevant to the page topic in hopes of being found more easily by search engines?
    Stacy

The home page, that is the page you want people to see when they type in your domain name eg:  www.example.com does need to be named index.html  (or default.html or whatever your host suggests it should be)...  otherwise, people will have to type in the full path to the page if you use something else.  eg:  www.example.com/mainpage.html
All pages linking from the index page can be named anything you like, eg :  aboutus.html;  services.html  etc,

  • Can't see website unless private browsing

    Hi,
I just transferred a domain name from one host to another and worked on a WordPress website under a temporary URL which had a redirect from the old host until the transfer was complete.  After the DNS changes were made, I was not able to see the WordPress wp-admin page in Firefox, Safari OR Chrome.  I'm running 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro.  However, I could see wp-admin from my iPhone.  I cleared all the browser caches, flushed the Mac's caches and emptied hosts, all to no avail.  Every browser defaulted to the temporary domain name when I entered the transferred domain.  Finally, someone at the new host suggested an incognito window in Chrome.  Voila!!  Works in Firefox, too, and I'm sure in Safari.  Now, I want to know why.  Anybody know the answer?  Where is that temporary domain name hiding that all the browsers can see it, but I can't get rid of it unless I'm in private browsing mode?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kim

  • FTP problem in Muse 2014

I get this error and my informationis correct. HELP

    Regards
    Vivek
