Hot back up and archive mode with RMAN

Just diving back into back up world...
I know I can do a hot back up of the Database with no archivelog option not using RMAN.
Just wonder if I can do it with RMAN with no Archivelog option?
TIA

Thanks. Without rman, you can do tablespace online
backup, using start and finish as far as I remember.This is true only if ur database is in ARCHIVELOG MODE. If its not then the only way to back it up is cold backup by either RMAN or without. In short you can do HOT/online backup ONLY if your database is in ARCHIVELOG MODE.
Now what u actually want tell us..

  • Backing up and restoring tablespaces with RMAN

    We have some tables that we want to backup and other tables that we don't.
    We are separating these tables by tablespaces and schema.
    SchemaA uses tablespaceA
    SchemaB uses tablespacesB
    We are also backing up
    sys
    sysaux
    undo
    tablespaces.
    Lets say we lose our tablespaces and do a restore. I am assuming that all my stored procedures can be restored no matter which schema I save them in. even if I save them in a schema that has a default tablespace that is not being backed up because the code in is in the System tablespace.
    Is my assumption correct?

    Here the key concept is Mean Time To Recover(MTTR), usually it is faster and easier to use an export backup file for this purpose, but this doesn't mean RMAN is bad :) RMAN was, is and will be the best practice for Oracle's B&R.
    Still you may assist your RMAN backup with a daily norows export backup and also maybe a file system backup depending on your environment and application's need. Backup's backup do not harm :)

  • Strange: stored exit -1 in hotbackup and archive mode

    Hello all,
    we got strange problem with enabled hotbackup and archive mode with calendar database. (JES 4 2005Q4 with all available patches, 116577-42)
    Store daemon exited wit -1 if one of above activated.
    Checked Database - ok, 'make' new database with rebuilt - same condition.
    Both prozesses are stopping after copy of ics50alarms.db and daemon exited wit -1.
    But csbackup will work right.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance
    Frank

    Hello,
    we found the reason of this malefunction:
    As storedaemon act a perl script - this script unfortunatly do not check the
    language but grep some system messages.
    So we corrected language settings (system messages) and the storedaemon will run correctly.

  • Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  Tried suggestions I've seen on the forum.

    Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
    I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
    I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
    I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
    I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
    Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

    I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
    To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
    Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
    If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

  • Edit back to back sales and purchase order with dropped ship warehouse

    Hi
    Our Client request to be able to edit back to back sales and purchase order with Drop Shipped WH which is frequently required according to their business nature in overseas trading.
    Kedalene Chong

    Hi Daniel,
    In the PO Ship To address field, the database/company address will appear until a warehouse is selected. Once a WH is selected, that is the address that will appear. If there is no WH address, the company address is indicated in the field (note: no company name just the address).
    If you want a different address/name, you can type it into the ShipTo address field and the PLD template will use whatever is in the field.
    If it is because there is no company name on the PO - does this mean you want a different company name than the one in the PO header. If this is the case and the ShipTo address & company name is always the same, you can update the PLD template by changing the ST address field to Text and enter the company name & address you want on the PO. This will appear on every PO regardless of what is in SAP. If you want the company name to always be the same, add a text field above the ST address field and fill in the company name; the address will be pulled from the PO Logistics ST field (per the first paragraph above).
    If this is not what you want, please explain in more detail what you would like to do.
    Heather

  • Standby db in R/W mode with RMAN

    Hello,
    I have a test environment that I have a physical non-managed standby database created in a virtual machine. I would like to use a physical standby database for read/write testing and reporting. I've been implementing the Data Guard Scenarios and tried to see if I can revert the activated database back to a physical standby database. However, I keep receiving the following error when I try to open the standby in read only mode:
    ORA-16004: backup database requires recovery
    ORA-01194: file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent
    ORA-01110: data file 1: 'C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\ORCL\SYSTEM01.DBF'
    Note: The standby db starts up as follows:
    startup nomount pfile=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_2\database\initORCLstdby.ora;
    alter database mount standby database;
    Once every x minutes, a batch job ships the logs from the primary to the secondary and runs the following:
    connect / as sysdba
    spool c:\scripts\logapply.log
    alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel;
    alter database recover cancel;
    Here's the steps I've done:
    1. On the standby database, query the V$DATABASE view and record the current SCN of the standby database:
    SQL> SELECT CURRENT_SCN FROM V$DATABASE;
    CURRENT_SCN
    1804721
    2. This step didn't work/isn't necessary:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-16136: Managed Standby Recovery not active
    3. Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target and create an incremental backup from the current SCN of the standby database that was recorded in step 1:
    RMAN> connect target "system/password"
    connected to target database: ORCL (DBID=xxxxx, not open)
    RMAN> BACKUP INCREMENTAL FROM SCN 1804721 DATABASE FORMAT 'C:\tmp\ForStandby_%U' tag 'FOR STANDBY';
    4. Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target, and catalog all incremental backup pieces:
    RMAN> CATALOG START WITH 'c:\tmp\ForStandby_';
    5. On the primary database, switch logs so the SCN of the restore point (created in step 1) will be archived on the physical standby database and ship it to the standby database:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
    6. Activate the physical standby database:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE STANDBY DATABASE;
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    Make any write changes on the activated standby database.
    7. Revert the activated database back to a physical standby database.
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target and apply incremental backups
    Open another session for RMAN:
    RMAN> RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
    Back to SQL session
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE CONVERT TO PHYSICAL STANDBY;
    SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    I then run a batch file that automatically start the standby database and recover from the shipped archive logs:
    startup nomount pfile=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_2\database\initORCLstdby.ora;
    alter database mount standby database;
    SQL> alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel;

    I've tried another approach to step 7:
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE CONVERT TO PHYSICAL STANDBY;
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT FORCE;
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT;
    I get an error if I try this:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE USING CURRENT LOGFILE DISCO
    NNECT;
    ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE USING CURRENT LOGFILE DISCONNECT
    ERROR at line 1:

    ORA-01110: data file 1: 'C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\ORCL\SYSTEM01.DBF'
    I ran SELECT SEQUENCE#, FIRST_TIME FROM V$LOG_HISTORY; and found that the standby sequence# is only one sequence behind the test primary database.
    I'm stuck and would appreciate any help. Thank you.

    And how do you think you will conserve disk space with RMAN ?
    Stop and think about it : How can you revert a database AFTER you have Opened
    it Read/Write ? You need to flashback it OR restore it from a backup taken before
    the OPEN.
    So, you could have taken a backup to Tape or to alternate disk before OPENing the
    database. The backup to alternate disk can be via Flashback Recovery area or
    a regular RMAN (compressed, you want ?) backup. In the second case, you wouldn't
    be using a Flashback mechanism but a simple backup and restore method.

  • How to restore archive logs with rman

    Hi,
    here is the scenario:
    we have lost everything because of disk failure.
    we have a full cold backup and archivelog backups which were created after cold backup and were backed up with rman.
    after restoring from cold backup, because archivelog backups do not exist in controlfile, how can we catalog archivelog backups and restore them?
    could you give me the exact rman command for this?
    Best Regards,
    Kamil

    cold backup means offline backup, you shut database normally and copy datafiles to another location.
    i think operating system does not matter that much but it is RedHat Linux Enterprise Server.
    backing up archivelogs whith rman script which is:
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '$BKUPLOC/arch_%d_%u_%s_%p.bkp';
    change archivelog all validate;
    sql 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
    backup archivelog time between 'SYSDATE - (30*60/(60*60*24))' and 'sysdate';
    release channel c1;
    so here is the details.
    1. because everything is lost, we restored all files(datafiles, controlfiles, redologs etc) from offline backup meaning copied all files from another location to corresponding location.
    2. want to apply archive logs which were created after cold backup till disk failure and we have these archive logs with backups which were taken by rman.
    So
    first of all, we want to register these archive log rman backups(because these backup information does not exist in restored controlfile)
    and then restore them and then apply them.
    we need rman commands to register these backups and restore them.

    Kamil

  • Alternative resources and alternative modes with CTM

    Hi everybody,
    we are trying to figure out, whether CTM supports alternative resources and alternative modes.
    Does anyone know if it is possible or has even implmented the functionality?
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best regards
    Mitch

    Hi Mitch,
    It depends on what CTM profile you are using. 1) Bucket based or 2) Time continuous.
    1) Bucket based : You will have to use SNP PDS and SNP PDS do not support alternative modes.
    Alternative resources are not supported at all in SNP.
    As an alternative, You can use the BAdi /SAPAPO/CURTO_SNP with CIF_IMPORT parameter to create multiple PDSes in case there is alternative resource in routing/recipe.
    2) TIme continuous: You will use CTM PDS.
    PPDS PDS supports alternative resources. I am entirely not sure about CTM PDS.
    I will check out, if I can find out.
    Which CTM profile you are using?

  • Difference between bridge and local mode with wlc 5508

    Hello,
    Now i have wlc5508 with few ap 11xx 12xx in local mode. All work correct. I will have to add few ap1552 in bridge mode ( i have to wait for wlc upgrade to change ap1552 to local mode). My question is that all ( local and bridge mode) will work correct together for my clients: rfid readers, laptop, computer in a,b,g,n mode ? What about roaming  and other feature ?
    thanks for help
    Peter

    If you plan on not doing MESH, then you set these 1552's in local mode and they will perform the same tasks as any other AP's in local mode.  When you want to do MESH, then that is when bridge mode comes into play and you have to define your RAP's and MAP's.
    Roaming, clients devices, doesn't matter if your using local or bridge.  roaming depends on your device and coverage and rfid, also depends on triangulation with the coverage you have now.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Mail back-up and archive strategy.

    Hi, all.
    I am new to Mail as I just recently switched from Entourage. One thing I have always done to avoid database corruption and crashes was to periodically export the content of my folders and mailboxes and then empty then so the database wouldn't grow too big (a constant threat to Entourage).
    Some questions since I am new to Mail:
    1. Can the Mail database experience the same problems? Where is the database located and what would be considered a size limit, if any, for the database before it became prone to crash and/or corruption?
    2. What strategy do you use for exporting mail and archiving different folders and mailboxes? Are there any third party applications worth using for this process? I have seen some that archive Mail mailboxes as PDF files. I would prefer for them to be archived as text in another database so that I can search past mails if it become necessary.
    Thank you in advance.

    I am not currently using Time Machine.
    Whatever backup method you use should be backing up the mail files. If it's not, use a different method, such as Time Machine.
    how would export work ?
    Select the mailboxes you want to export in the mailbox list. Then select
    Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
    from the menu bar.
    In case I want to save the entire Mail database where is this database located in OS X ?
    Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.

  • Need help with rman basics

    Hi,
    I would like to take hot backup of our database with no catalog. I created two folders in the local disk Backup and archives. The rman backups are stored in this folder and archive are stored in archive folder.
    Suppose server A has all the RMAN copies (backup available on other machine) and it got corrupted. I want to restore it on other machine.
    I have few doubts:
    1) Do i need to create same structure for all the database files in other server like the folders Backup,Archives and oracle home.
    2) Do i have to copy all the files in Backup,Archives folders to their corresponding folders in other machine.
    Can i restore the full database from here. I tried using similar scenario,but i had missing archives.
    3) When the database is in archivelog mode and the online backup is being taken, the modifications done to the database are stored in online archive files. My question is suppose i switch the database in noarchivelog mode and start the database, do i still need recovery?
    Thanks,

    Hi.
    1. Not really. But if you do it then its good.
    2.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/8i/RecoveryManager8i.php
    3. If a media failure occurs while the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you can only restore the database to the point of the most recent full database backup. You cannot recover transactions subsequent to that backup. To restore a database operating in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you can use only whole database backups taken while the database is closed. Therefore, if you decide to operate a database in NOARCHIVELOG mode, take whole database backups at regular, frequent intervals.
    Hope it helps

    When you attempt to startup the cloned database on the new server you will find that it needs recovery -- because it was taken in hot backup mode.
    That is why you need to copy the archivelogs that are generated from the first archivelog after the first "alter tablespace begin backup" to the first archivelog after the last "alter tablespace end backup".
    I see that you are also including a CREATE CONTROLFILE script.
    You would run that at the cloned environment.
    Then you would issue the RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL CANCEL command to make the clone consistent.
    You can, of course, use the same method to copy these archivelogs as you use to copy database files -- tar, cpio, tape, etc.
