  • IPod touch gets very hot when using the Internet/Video

Hello. I have a question about my iPod touch (8 GB, 1.1.4, January Software Upgrade). When I go to Safari and browse the web, or when I'm watching a long video (YouTube and memory) the iPod gets really hot, particulary on the top, near the Sleep-Wake button. Is this normal or should I worry?

Is it hot to the touch? or is it warm? My iPod only gets warm, but not hot, down near the home button after/during a sync or watching videos/searching the web.

  • Scripting a "Tip of the day" Text Box, Requesting Help!!

    Hi there folks,
I need the help of an experienced scripter, I'm in the
process of creating a website and I need help with the Flash SWF
that will be on the Title Page.
When someone arrives on my site I want a small Text Box to show
a "Tip of the Day" or a Random Phrase in the swf on the homepage of
    the website.
Unfortunately I can't figure out how to do this and I cannot
find anything to help me in the Flash Support File either. Ideally
I'm looking for someone to post a sample script on this thread so I
can have a look at it and learn from it.
Any Help would be much appreciated!!

    A quick and dirty way:
    - In a new Flash document, make a Dynamic Text box (Text Tool
-> Properties -> Dynamic Text) on your stage
    - Name it something you'll remember (example: 'my_text')
    - Add the following actionscript (preferably in a new layer):
And that's it. This isn't the prettiest code, and hardly the
best. Your SWF will be slightly bloated because of the use of a
Button Component . Also, putting all your quotes inside the Flash
movie makes it difficult to add new ones (you'll have to recompile
every time you do) and will increase the movie's size. But it's a
    start.

  • Tip regarding the "systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service" error

Just a tip regarding the well-known
systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service
error (which I ran into last weekend) to maybe save one or two among you a couple of hours of your time:
The error is described here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151012 as well as in several other threads in other language boards / in other forums etc. It is usually (as in the linked thread) 'solved' by reinstalling the system - good old Windows magic, also useful when dealing with systemd.
The Problem with this error is that you do not get into your system. Instead, systemd will print you the mentioned "Failed to start Journal Service" error message a couple of million times. There are also no logs that you could retrieve (when booting from a livesystem) and that would give you any helpful hints, since journal is systemd's logging service, old-style system logs are not kept, and the dmesg log doesn't survive the reboot with default settings.
As pointed out in the above mentioned thread, you will see a few more instructive error messages when adding 'emergency' to the kernel line in the bootloader config.
Now there may be plenty of reasons why the systemd journal service might not work. The most common and most annoying, however, appears to be this one:
In this case you will see that the problem actually lies in
systemd[1]: Cannot open /etc/machine-id: No such file or directory
Now, 'man machine-id' reveals that "the /etc/machine-id file contains the unique machine id of the local system that is set during installation. (...) The machine ID is usually generated from a random source (...)". It is obviously perfectly justified to refuse to boot the system because an absolutely insignificant random number is missing. As far as systemd is concerned anyway.
Usually, it seems, the /etc/machine-id is set by /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup during installation or system upgrade. It is not documented anywhere that this is a rather important step and that you should better check if this was or was not actually done before rebooting. Obviously (but for no apparent reasons) systemd fails to run this (or to run this successfully) sometimes.
Also to be recommended: Always retain (back up) your old kernel and initramfs and edit your bootloader config appropriately to be able to boot with your old kernel again ... just to have one or two options left to get back into the system in case of running into an unpleasant surprise from the side of systemd or other packages.
The solution is, obviously, to create this file /etc/machine-id ... You probably want to do that from a livesystem (if you want to try it from the emergency shell, you would need to remount / (i.e. root) as rw and hope that systemd will not punish you for that) by just running the program that was designed for creating this file manually:  /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.s … devel/7528 states that it might also work with merely creating the file 'touch /etc/machine-id'. Though I didn't try that since I had enough fun with systemd for one week and didn't want to break my system again just to see if that works.

    Jristz wrote:
    ackalker wrote:Sorry for necrobumping this.
Generating the machine-id in a consistent way is very important when working with KVM and containers, where the machine-id can be set for the VM or container. See `man systemd-machine-id-setup`.
Again, _don't_ just put some random UUID in there, especially not in the systemd package install script, this makes provisioning Arch Linux containers a PITA.
If you thing that the way that arch is handlynbg the machine-id is wrong or can be improved, then file a bug.
    He already did.
Jristz wrote:Anyway, I thing if reinstalling systemd package or if systemd have a command to reinitialize the machine-id file.
Like so many of your posts, I had to read this a half dozen times before it made any sense. I think you're hinting at the utility that ackalker already pointed out in the post you're replying to. And, if you read the install scriptlet, you wouldn't need to think about whether or not reinstalling would be an option. You would know that it isn't.

  • Tip power cord broke off inside outlet.

The very tip of the male end of my power adaptor broke off INSIDE the computer. It is now stuck in the computer's power outlet. How do I get it out without disassembling my powerbook?
I should add that the outlet is still working and my replacement adaptor charges it, it's just that it doesn't sit comfortably with the other thing still inside it and occasionally it makes a little crackling noise (no sparks, just the noise)
Also, this is the second time that this happened with an Apple power cord in the space of a year. I am not unduly abusing my power cords, so what am I doing to cause this? Are Apple's power adaptors shoddy or is it me?

Yes, that will always be a danger.. which is why you use a tiny tiny amount of glue, and let it dry. You'll be able to pull it out, even if it glues to the metal.. as a non-pourous surface, the bond with the super glue won't be very strong.
Personally, I'd very seriously consider stripping the machine down, following the instructions at http://www.ifixit.com

  • Blank Tip of the day window

    Hi all,
We have an odd happening in one of our video labs here at work.  When launching AE CS3 (ver 8 i believe?) the tip of the day window pops up after the program launches, but it's blank.  This happens on all but one of the machines in the lab.  Nothing had been installed lately - and oddly was working up until late last night.  I have been googling - searching this forum and only found one entry that was on the windows side and it was deemed an OS problem - i.e. no help
Some info before I launch into my troubleshooting actions:
    all machines are the same
Mac OS 10.6.8 ( we can't upgrade any further as the instructor doesn't wan't to teach the latest version of Final Cut)
    MacPro (4.1)
Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz
    6 GB ram
    OS Drive 500 GB drive
    Here's what I've done
Re-installed the App hoping for a quick fix - no go
Unistalled (deleting all prefs) and re-installed - no go
Located an update and installed (8.02) - no go
located user prefs and deleted - no go
I'm at my wit's end and no relief seems to be in sight.  I know I can't be the only one that's experiencing this - Basically we can't use the program at all once that blank tip screen pops up - all menus are greyed out and even AE's help is greyed out as well.  We're forced to force quit the program to gain access to the machine again.
    Help!
    Thanks
    Joe

Well, I work at a university - we don't have the budget to do the upgrade treadmil on all the software we try to support - we've got to work with what we have - I can see that I'm going to get no where with that type of attitude - no wonder why most universities are going to find alternatives to Adobe - just my 2 cents.  I asked a question - I didn't need to be berated by a company that we've pumped tens of thousands of dollars over the years just to say well, screw you

  • Apple's Tip of the week - Two Seconds to Sleep anomaly

Apple states in its tip of the week
    "Tip of the Week
    Two Seconds to Sleep
Want the fastest way to put your Mac right into a deep, sleepy-bear hibernation-like sleep (no whirling fan, no dialogs, no sound — nuthin’ — just fast, glorious sleep). Just press Command-Option and then hold the Eject button for about 2 seconds and Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. It doesn’t get much faster than that."
    at URL http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/quicksleep.html
I tried this on my 2x 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and it gave my computer fits.
First it took 5 seconds to goto sleep and then immediately wakes up again. Not only this but it corrupted my Safari in as much as clicking on any web link would cause a download of the HTML and then after deleting the downloaded file and quitting the Safari download window all the Safari web pages being displayed or active in Dock would terminate and disappear. I had to restart the computer to regain some sanity. It was repeatable as well.
If others experience a similar behavior I'd sure like to see some feedback as this is just too bad of Apple if its widespread.
BTW - I'm running 10.4.7 (since it was released to public) and file system permissions are presitine and all correct just for the record.
    Thanks.

I have been using this for a over a year (forget where I found it) and always use it to send my PowerBook to the Land of Nod, rather than just shutting the lid.
When you do it this way, also, it is quite clear that some processes still need to do their thing, particularly a network; and also after using QuickTime (or video in iTunes).

  • Tech Tip of the Week: Syncing Distribution Groups in Office 365

Having trouble getting your distribution groups to sync when migrating to Office 365?
We recently worked with a customer who had over 300 distribution groups that were not syncing to Office 365. Upon review, we noticed that the distribution groups did not have a Display Name.
Here are the steps we took in order to resolve the problem:
    1. Open ADUC “Active Directory Users and Computers “On the top menu click on view and select Advanced Features.
    2. Find the Distribution List that is not syncing to your Office 365 tenant > right click the Distribution List > select Properties > click on the attribute editor tab.
    3. There are a couple attributes that must be filled out in order  for it to Synchronize to Office 365.
    Attributes: mail,
displayName – if they do not have any data, fill it in. Once completed click ok.
    4. Open the MIISClient. This is located on your DIRSYNC Server. The default path is: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Online Directory Sync\SYNCBUS\Synchronization Service\UIShell\miisclient.exe”
    5. Click on Metaverse Search > input the following:
    Attribute: Mail
    Operator: Contains
    Value:
    “Email Address of the DG”
    6. Once filled in click on search > double click the search results > click on the connectors tab. Note: If
you only see SourceAD Management Agent, perform the following:
    7. Click on Management Agents > Right click SourceAD > click on Run > click on Full Import Stage Only > click on ok.
    8. Right click SourceAD > click on run > click on Full Sync > click on ok.
    9. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Full Confirming Import Stage > click on ok.
    10. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Full Confirming Sync > click on ok.
    11. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Export > click on ok.
