Tech Tip of the Week: Syncing Distribution Groups in Office 365

Having trouble getting your distribution groups to sync when migrating to Office 365?
We recently worked with a customer who had over 300 distribution groups that were not syncing to Office 365. Upon review, we noticed that the distribution groups did not have a Display Name.
Here are the steps we took in order to resolve the problem:
1. Open ADUC “Active Directory Users and Computers “On the top menu click on view and select Advanced Features.
2. Find the Distribution List that is not syncing to your Office 365 tenant > right click the Distribution List > select Properties > click on the attribute editor tab.
3. There are a couple attributes that must be filled out in order  for it to Synchronize to Office 365.
Attributes: mail,
displayName – if they do not have any data, fill it in. Once completed click ok.
4. Open the MIISClient. This is located on your DIRSYNC Server. The default path is: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Online Directory Sync\SYNCBUS\Synchronization Service\UIShell\miisclient.exe”
5. Click on Metaverse Search > input the following:
Attribute: Mail
Operator: Contains
Value:
“Email Address of the DG”
6. Once filled in click on search > double click the search results > click on the connectors tab. Note: If
you only see SourceAD Management Agent, perform the following:
7. Click on Management Agents > Right click SourceAD > click on Run > click on Full Import Stage Only > click on ok.
8. Right click SourceAD > click on run > click on Full Sync > click on ok.
9. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Full Confirming Import Stage > click on ok.
10. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Full Confirming Sync > click on ok.
11. Right click TargetWebService > click on Run > click on Export > click on ok.

  • Tech Tip of the Week: Windows Powershell CMDlets

This week’s tech tip is for all you Windows PowerShell users. If you’re using PowerShell,  you may already know about CMDlets. If not, this post is sure to excite you, as CMDlets (pronounced “command-let”) are nifty commands that will ease the process of using
    Powershell.
Here are 5 CMDlets to get you started:
    1. Get-Recipient | Where {$_.EmailAddresses –match “[email protected]”}
This CMDlet will find an email address that is inside of the quotes.
    2. (Get-Mailbox) | ForEach {Set-Mailbox $_.Identity –RetentionPolicy “Contoso-Policy”}
This CMDlet applies a single retention policy to all users.
    3. Get-MSOLUser | Set-MSOLUser –PasswordNeverExpires $true
This sets all users passwords to never expire (Requires Azure Module)
    4. (Get-Recipient) | ForEach {Add-RecipientPermission –identity $_.PrimarySMTPAddress –trustee [email protected] –AccessRights SendAs –Confirm:$Y}
This gives a single mailbox SendAs rights to all other recipients (groups, mailboxes, external contacts).
    5. (Get-Mailbox) | ForEach {Enable-Mailbox –identity $_.PrimarySMTPAddress –Archive}
This CMdlet turns on archiving for all mailboxes
Try out these CMDlets and let us know what you think!

  • "Apple Quick Tip of the Week" podcast crashes AppleTV

I have iTunes set to download the Apple Quick Tip Of The Week (AQTOTW) podcasts, and then sync them to my AppleTV. Nearly every one of the AQTOTW podcasts that I play causes the AppleTV video to stutter and eventually, the white Apple logo appears. After a few seconds, I am seeing the main menu.
None of the other podcasts that I view on the AppleTV have this problem.
The software on the AppleTV is up to date. iTunes runs on a Macmini which is running Leopard (up to date as well).
The AQTOTW are very useful, how can I view them on the AppleTV?

There are a number of good hints in this post, many of which apply in Leopard.

  • Apple's Tip of the week - Two Seconds to Sleep anomaly

Apple states in its tip of the week
    "Tip of the Week
    Two Seconds to Sleep
Want the fastest way to put your Mac right into a deep, sleepy-bear hibernation-like sleep (no whirling fan, no dialogs, no sound — nuthin’ — just fast, glorious sleep). Just press Command-Option and then hold the Eject button for about 2 seconds and Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. It doesn’t get much faster than that."
    at URL http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/quicksleep.html
I tried this on my 2x 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and it gave my computer fits.
First it took 5 seconds to goto sleep and then immediately wakes up again. Not only this but it corrupted my Safari in as much as clicking on any web link would cause a download of the HTML and then after deleting the downloaded file and quitting the Safari download window all the Safari web pages being displayed or active in Dock would terminate and disappear. I had to restart the computer to regain some sanity. It was repeatable as well.
If others experience a similar behavior I'd sure like to see some feedback as this is just too bad of Apple if its widespread.
BTW - I'm running 10.4.7 (since it was released to public) and file system permissions are presitine and all correct just for the record.
    Thanks.

I have been using this for a over a year (forget where I found it) and always use it to send my PowerBook to the Land of Nod, rather than just shutting the lid.
When you do it this way, also, it is quite clear that some processes still need to do their thing, particularly a network; and also after using QuickTime (or video in iTunes).

  • Quick tip of the week

    Hi All,
Have you noticed that the "quick tip of the week" on the apple.com/business/videotips page are done on machines running tiger. A number of them including some of those most recently added (e.g. "When a pdf is too big", and "zip up your files") seem not to be applicable in Leopard. I find this a bit weird. Come on apple get up to speed with Leopard please.
BTW anyone know how to shrink down the size of a pdf in Leopard?
    Thanks

There are a number of good hints in this post, many of which apply in Leopard.

  • Mac tip of the week 5/9/07: The smaller PDF Secret Control

The tip of the week has instructions for compressing a PDF file. The compress PDF method mentioned first is fine, However, the instructions for making a filter to do this make no sense at all to me. It says to select Colorsync from the "second presets pop-up menu" when you open the print menu. What is this? Where is this "second presets pop-up menu?" When i open a print window, I get a print window. There's no pop up menu, first or second.
For a Mac tip, this is surely obscure. Does anyone know what Apple is talking about here? Thanks
    -wayne

For some reason when I select 'Add Filters' the dialogue closes and a .pdf is created.
For some reason not working - any ideas as to why this happens?
    Thanks

  • Remove users from all distribution groups in Microsoft 365

    Hello
I would like to know if there is a way I can remove a user from all distribution groups in Microsoft 365. I have a rather large list of users that this would need to be applied to though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    John

I would assume yes since there is a cmdlet called, "Remove-DistributionGroupMember", you usually have to have to post some code of what you have
tried or working on to get further help from most other people here.

  • How to create public group in office 365 admin panel?

    Dear Microsoft ,
I try to create group in office 365 admin panel but in that group when i add outsider mail id eg([email protected],[email protected]) is not created ...it's showing error. Can please help me to how i create public group in office 365 ?

    Hi,
Which error message does it show?
Based on my research, internal users (users that have a mailbox in your organization) and external users (people that don’t have a mailbox in you organization) can be added as members of a distribution group. However, only external users
that have been added to your organization’s address book (also known as shared contacts), can be members of a group. For information about how to add external users to your organization’s address book, see
    Create and use shared contacts.
    Hope this helps.

  • AAD Sync for multiple tenantson Office 365 into one Azure AD at Head Office

My customer has a SharePoint 2013 farm running in Azure through a VPN connection extending their Head Office on premises AD.
They also run Dir Sync at the moment for the head office users to make use of exchange online through Office 365.
They have 70 plus schools around the world each with their own Office 365 tenancy, so with on prem but most only in the cloud.
Can I use the AAD Sync tool to replicate all the individual tenancy users in to one global Azure AD?
    SSO is not required.

    Hi Adrian,
Here is a reference link with multi forest and multi tenant scenario's.

Your answer is off the topic. the links you provided above are talking about how to sync a single forest(or multiple domains), into multiple Azure AD (multiple office 365 tenant eventually).
However, the original question is about how to utilize Azure AD (some only exists in cloud) to allow Azure AD users login to on-premises SharePoint farm. in another word, how on-premises SharePoint farm can authenticate users against over 70 different Azure
    AD.

  • What's the difference between SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 Team Sites?

    Hi there,
What are the differences between SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 Team Sites?
If I would like to develop a professional corporate website with SharePoint technology (because the company allready uses Office 365), do you recommend using SharePoint 2013 (in the cloud) or Office 365 Team Sites? And why?
    Thank you very much!

You cannot make SPO Team Sites anonymous-enabled, therefor they're a moot point for a public website.
While slightly out of date, take a look at this:

  • Setting the shared templates location by Deploying Office 365 Midsized Business "using a network share" from a on-premise location

I found the question "Deploy Office 365 pro plus using a network share or from a on-premise locaiton" the most useful of the resources
on MS yet - but I am having difficulties getting the files to download for a local deployment.
The root of the issue, that I cannot find anywhere, is how do I set the shared templates location for users in the organization.  First I thought a GPO, but I cannot find that setting in the GPO in MS.
Then I thought modifying the REG- but it is in a binary key which could include other information I may not want modified(Or does it matter?)
Then I looked for ways to download the deployment but launching from an elevated prompt as IT (Domain level) returns a useless error to paraphrase- 'sorry MSOffice didn't install- do you have enough disk space'.
I have downloaded the GPO objects, but not installed them, likely I will need those later though.
Just want to path all the users to a central repository of office/excel/access/outlook templates in addition to their local templates. Concise help in steps or sites that have solved the issue are Greatly appreciated : )

    Hi,
you can use the GPO ADMX templates to configure the "Workgroup templates path".
This actually configures a registry setting named: "sharedtemplates".
    The registry value/type/data is:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\15.0\common\general
    Name: sharedtemplates
    Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ (Expandable String Value)
    Data: <UNC path to folder>
From the GPO reference workbook/sheet, for Office:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4976.selected-content-relating-to-group-policy-administrative-templates-adm-and-admx.aspx
    Filename: office15.admx
    Scope: User
    Path: Microsoft Office 2013\Shared paths
Policy Setting Name: Workgroup templates path
Supported on: At least Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7
    Category: Shared paths
Explain Text: Specifies the location of workgroup templates.
    Registry Key: HKCU\software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\common\general!sharedtemplates
Note: it is supported to populate this setting, with a UNC path, but not with a web path.
    e.g.: \\server01\shared\templates <this is valid>
    e.g.: http://server01/shared/templates <this is not valid>
This constraint (for web URIs) can be difficult to work around. If you are using SharePoint, and think WebDAV might work, it doesn't seem to work for us :(
Of course, if you have SharePoint, there are much better ways to handle document templates, but, our users are familiar with this File -> New -> from template type of method...
It can also be set manually by a user:

  • Using the default SharePoint web site in Office 365 with PWA

Hi, we are testing Project Online for the first time.<o:p></o:p>
Per default the Project Web App is installed under
    xyz.sharepoint.com/sites/pwa.<o:p></o:p>
Is it possible, to use it with the standard SharePoint
    team site?<o:p></o:p>
When I activate Project Online for our default web
site, a new Instance of the PWA is set up.<o:p></o:p>
We’d like to use the default PWA instance since it is a menu item in the Office 365 main menu.<o:p></o:p>
In a getting started video from Microsoft is a sample
shown, where a task from a team site list can be enhanced to a Project Online
project. In this case the link from the team web site called the project view
    from the ../sites/pwa instance.<o:p></o:p>
But I don’t have the function/icon in our team
    website.<o:p></o:p>
    Thanks in advance,<o:p></o:p>
    Marcus<o:p></o:p>

Hello, if I understand your query correctly the root PWA site has to be PWA site collection, it can't be a default SharePoint team site. The individual project site (below PWA) can start from just a SharePoint team site though or any SharePoint site with
a tasks list. This can then be added to PWA and converted to a full enterprise project if required or left as SharePoint task list project that can be seen in PWA in visibility mode. Paul
