How can I get books on my iPad that I already purchased in person without paying for them again?

I have a lot of paperback books that I'd like to upload onto my iPad, but I don't want to buy them AGAIN in the iBooks store. Is there any way I can get them onto my iPad for free?

Thanks, I was hoping for something a little more selective that I could do from my computer, but I think this is helpful.
Maybe the best approach to get this under control is:
- Import all photos into iphoto
- Delete all photos per your suggestion
- Selectivly sync the photos you want put back on your phone

P.S. I still wouldn't mind finding a way to selectively delete files that are on my iphone from my computer. (In Windows, you can go to My Computer -> Iphone, open the folder and delete what you want).

iPhoto on the iPad and iPhoto on the Mac are completely different programs. The Mac version cannot run on the iPad, because the operating systems and the processors are different. Don't expect, that iPhoto on the iPad will be able to do the same things as your iPhoto for Mac, pr that you can keep the two iPhoto libraries in sync.

Try upgrading your Mac to the newest version of OS X Mavericks, and try upgrading your iPhone and iPad to the newest version of iOS 7.

Where is the backup of the media and other important files from the computer? Ultimately, it is the users responsibility to ensure that backups exists. Waiting until there is a problem to decide to do a backup is not smart. Would you wait until a fire started in your home to call the insurance company and inquire about homeowners/renters insurance????
In the event that no backup exists (stop being lazy.... keep backups of YOUR data and other important files):
If you are in the US and running iTunes 10.3 or later, it is possible to redownload music via iCloud from purchased history.
If you are not in the US or for some reason cannot run iTunes 10.3 or later, contact iTunes customer support and ask very nicely for the opportunity to redownload the content. They are not required to provide this opportunity.
It is also possible to transfer content from an iDevice that was purchased via iTunes. On the new computer, sign into the iTunes account, authorize the computer, connect the device then select File > Transfer Purchases.
The simplest method of all is to transfer or copy the media (and other important files) from the old computer or the backup of the old computer. Typing "move itunes library" into the search bar here or into google will reveal step by step instructions on how to do this.

Yup, your question and Diane's answer helped me also. Tho' I had had problems before getting into the iTunes store I always managed to find a way. Today they had me blocked cold with the "Update to 10" advert no matter what I did. Other questioners are being told, incorrectly as it turns out, that they have to update their OS to accomodate iTunes 10 and upgrade to iTunes 10. I did the download which did not take up much more room on my crowded old hard drive and now I'm back in business.

The only way you can get that content back is if you have it backed up somewhere. Have you not backed up before, either in iTunes, or in iCloud?

Because I keep getting asked to purchase or sign up for Creative Cloud and that is not what I want. So I reckoned I would start from scratch and download whatever I could get, latest edition, as a 30-day trial, then purchase it after I had tried it out. Well that doesn't work because I still am being asked to either register with a serial number or join the CC, in spite of it being a 30-day free trial. The Continue Trial button is not available. I can't get any contact with Adobe to ask for help, so here I am.
