I think you need to get it into a current i tunes library, then you can sync.
Here is a link with a rather long but useful discussion. There are some non apple tools floating around to grab the media as well. You need two steps, getting the stuff off of the old system, and getting them onto the pad. To do the second step, you need a current i tunes set up somewhere.

Guys, I took my ipod and connected it to my computer, it said I need to download a newer version (10.6) so I did. However it erased all my music on my ipod. Now, I have the music on my wife ipad, but the apple ID is in her name. when I connect it to the computer and open itunes it says, the same thing Log on and update to a newer version. Did iTunes delete your music. Not very likely, unless the iTunes you connected your iPod with is not the iTunes or computer you normally sync with. So, if the music is still in your iTunes account. all you have to do, is connect your iPad to your computer and once it's recognized, click it open and click on the music tab and check what song, albums, etc., you want on your iPad, then click apply, then sycn.

My ibook recently crashed and I bought a new Dell PC with Windows Vista installed. When I plug my ipod in, a message comes up saying that I need to reformat my ipod for Windows but by doing this, all of my songs and videos will be deleted.

Unfortunately your new Windows PC cannot natively read the contents of your Mac formatted iPod.
This is because Windows cannot read the HFS+ file system that a Mac uses.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
XPlay2 will also allow the transfer of music from iPod to computer.
Once you've done that, you can reformat the iPod by restoring it on your PC.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone. Without syncing : File>Transfer Purchases
