How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. Yes. But consolidate to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
The why I'm asking is because the music library (176gb) is way more than the computer drive (C:\). Remember that all the media is on a external hard drive (J:\)
The steps I gave earlier will work to copy the whole library onto the new drive, in the correct layout for future ease of use.

Do you mean each person having copies of the tracks, or you both share one copy of the tracks? You can do the latter but you will have to manage media on your own which is not for everybody (because you have to know what you are doing). It also means that what one person does to the tracks will happen to the other, so if you don't both agree on track information it will get messsy.

The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

a couple of things - to do this all macs must have the same version of iPhoto
If you are using the Time Capsule for Time Machine you should not put your iPhoto library on the same volume - you either need to create a disk image on the TC for your iPhoto library or partition the TC so there is a TM volume and another one for iPhoto

How can i stop itunes from finding duplicate tracks from my external hard drive?

All my music is stored on C: drive and backed up on an external hard drive. when I install I iTunes it detects all tracks from both sources giving me 20000 duplicates. I have tried uninstalling iTunes and then installing without the external drive plugged but iTunes still shows both copies, only the f: drive version has the ! next to it. How can I get iTunes to only search in one place?

Uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes doesn't reset the library. To that simply delete the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder. For completeness delete the other files in that folder and the subfolder Album Artwork.
Don't let iTunes scan the computer, or if you do disconnect all of the additional sources of media. Better not to scan and then use File > Add Folder to Library so you are in control.

Trouble moving iPhoto Library (9.6) with Yosemite to External Hard Drive

I fresh installed iphoto, and updated it to current version (9.6) on Yosemite. There are no photos on it yet. I am trying to transfer it to my new hard drive that is formatted Mac Extended Journaled. Every time I get error code 36.
Previously, I tried moving iphoto library over to hard drive when I had photos on it, and I got the error code. So I uninstalled iphoto, reinstalled it, I am still getting the error code.
Any ideas? I am moving library from House icon > pictures> iPhoto Library and dragging that to Hard drive.

I just tried importing 10 photos into iPhoto on my mac and then i quit iPhoto and went User>Pictures> iPhoto Library and dragged to my external, but got the same error 36. I just cannot get the iphoto Library to drag over to my external without being stopped by error code 36.
My goal is to import my photos into iPhoto that is stored on my hard drive, so I dont have any of those photos on my mac. Any ideas or clarification if I didnt follow your instructions Thanks

Hi, I have just downloaded a movie from itunes for the first time. All of my previously purchased DVD's are on an external Hard drive to play directly on my TV. I wanted to move this downloaded movie on to the hard drive, but it will only play through itunes and will not play on the hard drive. Has anyone got any advice as to how I can do this. I have a mid 2010 Macbook pro 13'' connected to a 23'' Cinema Display and i have an external harddrive connected to the computer through the display to keep cord and clutter clear and also that way i dont have to hook up more than one USB cable when connecting. Every time the computer goes to sleep the external hard drive gets disconnected improperly without ejecting. This is annoying because if i have a document open that is drawing from the harddrive when it does to sleep i risk loosing the file. Is there any setting i can change or way that i can get around this? maybe i shouldnt let it sleep or the display cant turn off? Any input is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

How can I keep my iTunes folder from changing from my external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive connected to my Time Capsule. I have changed my iTunes preferences to store my media on the external hard drive. Whenever I shut down iTunes and restart it, the preferences revert back to my hard drive.

Well - first, I shut down iTunes and restarted it, the external drive was still in the Preferences. I shut down the computer, and restarted it, the Preferences reverted.
From what I can tell, the hard drive never shut off - I don't know what the deal is - I've contacted Apple support and scheduled time to see if there is something in the set up I am missing. Will let you know.

I am using Lightroom 3.
I've been using an external hard drive to store my photos and backing up my catalog to my C drive for a long time. Not problems. That external hard drive filled up so I added another one doing the same thing. Everything seemed fine backing up both catalogs, hooking up drives, etc.
Now, I just was traveling on vacation I hooked a drive and it's not locating the catalogs. I'm getting the question mark for all previews. ??? I have in the past run across this and have just located the file and synced it up.
This time it looks as if both catalogs have been merged. It looks like a huge mess.
Is there anyway to recover, or just start from scratch and located the files based on the drive letter?
What is the easiest thing to do? I would of course like to keep my presets and sync a certain catalog with a particular drive. I can find the catalog folders. I guess I'm asking is there a way to just clear the current "view" in lightroom. In other words, F: Photos go here, blah blah, the just go back in and find the drive F: and have it start fresh?

One possible cause of this happening (which I think is the most likely explanation) is that when you plugged in the drive, the letter of the drive is not what it was previously. Please check to see what letter Windows assigned the drive, and if its not the letter that was assigned previously, change the drive letter.
