If you have an older version of Office for Mac, i.e. Office 2004 which predates .docx format files, then you can install a free addon to allow it to import and export .docx files.

Jolly Giant gave good advice re. ITunes and unable to download the latest version on my older Mac Mini. I downloaded ITunes 9.2 as he suggested but came to a standstill at the place where we "agree" with terms. Couldn't open this without Iwork which I don't have. Help! Carolyn
Hello, no way you should need iWork to "Agree"!?
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
And if you're really at 10.4.2, then get this and apply it...

I was recently donated my first Mac, a Mac Mini A1103. It came to me with a bad hard drive, which I have replaced. My question is: how can I acquire (legally) the factory discs to reinstall the operating system?
Thank you in advance.You can certainly use the black-faced retail version of 10.4 Tiger on the mini. What you don't get on the gray-faced original disks are the Apple hardware test, or iLife applications. You can always buy Tech Tool Pro, which can do much of the testing the Apple hardware test does, and it also fixes disk issues, that the AHT doesn't do. And you can buy the iLife applications separately, if you want them.
If you go that route, ensure that what you're buying isn't an upgrade disk, which was used when Tiger first came out, for systems that had 10.3 on them. You can also find older unopened mac software at http://www.hardcoremac.com
Also, you can run OS X 10.5 Leopard on the mini. If it doesn't have 1GB, though, you should upgrade the memory if you want to use Leopard (min is 512MB). It has one memory slot, and you already know how to get into the system. If you want to use Leopard, you can call the Apple online store 800-MY-APPLE and order it from them. Retail Apple stores don't carry it anymore. -

This mini is still running System 10.6.8, with the 'latest' version of Safari being version 5.1.10.
Lately, Safari fails to perform certain features correctly on certain websites, and I have to switch to Firefox to make the websites work.
Is it time for a system upgrade, so I can run a newer version of Safari? If so, which newer OSX system version would be the best for me to upgrade to?A few other things to consider if you want to upgrade your OS.

How do we split our iCloud accounts but keep one iTunes account so we can share purchased content for our multiple iPhones and iPads?
You can migrate a copy of the data to a new account, then delete the other person's data from each account. To do this, on the phone that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that you want to keep on the phone, save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll. If you have any synced notes that you want to keep on the phone, email these to yourself so you can create new notes in the new account.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom). Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new account. You will create a new icloud email address with you turn Mail to On.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa). -
I am selling my Macbook Air 2008 and need to reformat it back to it's factory settings. I've been reading the help but I don't seem to have a re-install drive for the USB port. Is this something post 2008 or can I get one from somewhere?

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

Using both the display ports on the new mac book pro
Hi, are there some one in Appel that can tell me if its possible to use both the display ports on the new mac book pro to show keynote on? or if its possible to make that possible? i would really like to be able to create a keynote with 5120 x 1600 pixels and get that output on two display ports, so that i can use my hardware to make a keynote with really nice reselution. its for use on a screen size of 18x4 meter.
Connect one display to the Mini-Displayport and the other to a USB port using an adapter like this:

Or buy a Matrox DualHead2Go DP Edition external video box and connect both displays to that, which in turn connects to the Mini-Displayport on the computer.
There are limitations either way. A USB-connected display will be less responsive than one connected to the MDP, because USB 2 is slow. To use two displays with the Matrox box, I believe the displays must be identical. Read and understand all the caveats about each alternative before making a decision about which way to go. -

Resolution
Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor. Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.
