How do collection updates really work?

Hi,
Few questions about collection updates.
I have been trying to figure out the most effective way to implement collection updates so, that there would be minimal delay in adding a workstation to collections. The documentation on how the updates exactly work is however a bit vague and the functionality
seems to have no clear course of action... This is going to be a long post, since there's much to describe.
We have two main collection structures. One is for software and the other one is for Active Directory.
Software structure has collections for each software and each software collection is consisted of direct members, Query rules for AD Security Group members and included collections from Active Directory collection structure.
Active Directory collection structure is a tree-like structure where the root collection and all descending collections include their child items. The real query for workstations from AD is in the last collection/node of the tree. For example in the picture
"Staff" collection has collection rules to include "Faculty1" and "Faculty2". Faculty1 has rules which include "dept1" and "dept2" to the collection and so forth. All collections are limited to All Workstations
(members queried from AD), which is limited to All Systems.
I have disabled all incremental and scheduled updates from each collection (excl. built-in collections) and set hourly updates on All workstations. All built-in collections are incrementally updating. Now, this should only update all workstations collection
and the rest should be left alone? Nope. When the All Workstations collection schedule triggers almost 2/3 of all other collections are refreshed too. There however seem to be no consistency what collections are updated. First I thought that all collections
which have All workstations as limiting collection would update, but it does not seem to work like that.
First question: Does anyone have any idea how the update works in this case? Does updating limiting collection affect other collections?
I have created an SQL query to easily see the last refresh time of a collection. The query also shows all manually made "Update collection membership" requests with time and what the settings are in that collection. This query is scoped on the view
"vCollections".
Second question: This list shows one extra collection which cannot be seen from ConfigMgr console. The collection has ID "SMSOTHER" and is named "All custom resources". What is this for? The collection updates on schedule and has incremental
updates turned on.
Our organization has around 900 collections in total and if all collections are updated (full update) synchronously it will take almost 30 minutes to complete (BTW, why is the performance so poor and why no async updates?). Software collections probably are
easiest to do with incrementals, but using schedule on all AD collections with the current functionality seems like an overkill. I have tried scheduled updates on different levels of the structure, but none of these seem to have the constant effect of updating
all child collections also.
How does updating one collection affect other collections? Do the included collections get updated as well?
Would be great if there was a comprehensive documentation about collection updates.
BR,
Juha-Matti

Hi,
First question:
Based on my knowledge, when All Workstations collection schedule triggers, all other collections related to this collection would be updated too.
Second question:
The collection “All custom resources” hasn’t been documented. I think it might be reserved for future
use.

  • How does business catalyst really work?

    So i've tried to reach this and cant seem to find answers in plain english.... How does Business Catalyst really work?.. functionally.
    1) I have a hosting service with godaddy and jumpline, I have a lot of space and do all of my client's websites through the space I have with those two plans, do they offer the business catalyst format? Just buy that platform with them or have it added?
    2) I have CC, business catalyst "comes with" it.... how does that work? Am I given space on someone elses server somewhere or do I just have the ability to upload the BC software onto a server I have... in which case could it be uploaded to godaddy or jumpline?
    3) The new MUSE features can only be done with business catalyst right?

    Hi,
    Business Catalyst is a web hosting platform that lets web designers host, build, and sell websites to clients. You use Muse to create and update a website. You use Business Catalyst to host it. A Muse subscription includes free hosting on Business Catalyst for one site. A Creative Cloud membership includes free hosting for five sites.
    Regarding your Creative Cloud Subscription, with BC. You must install and use Muse/Dreamweaver to publish your free sites. For More details, Please refer to the article below
    http://helpx.adobe.com/business-catalyst/using/business-catalyst-muse-users.html
    The new Muse feature, like in Browser editing is compatible only with Business Catalyst, but the other feature like Parallex Scrolling works on all the other hosting as well, like Godaddy.
    If you still have any query, please let us know and we will try to resolve it.
    Thanks.

  • How does Calendar.setFirstDayOfWeek really work?

    If you run the following program you get the same output from both calendars. Is that really how it should work or is it a bug?
    import java.util.Calendar;
    import java.util.GregorianCalendar;
    public class CalendarTest {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    Calendar europeanCalendar = new GregorianCalendar();
    europeanCalendar.setFirstDayOfWeek(Calendar.MONDAY);
    Calendar americanCalendar = new GregorianCalendar();
    System.out.println(americanCalendar.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_WEEK));
    System.out.println(europeanCalendar.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_WEEK));
    }

    Hmm, maybe. So the only way to actually use
    setFirstDayOfWeek is via the getFirstDayOfWeek
    method?
    I was under the impression that
    setFirstDayOfWeek(MONDAY) would re-number the day
    constants (MONDAY, TUESDAY etc.) so that MONDAY would
    have the value 1 instead of SUNDAY.Er, no. They're constants. They can't be renumbered. That's what the "final" in their declarations mean.

  • How does live update 6 work with BIOS updates?

    I want to upgrade to the x99 platform but I am concerned with how new it is.  I want to make sure I keep the BIOS updated because of the "newness" of it all and compatibility issues.  Although I have built and continue to upgrade my system I am in no way proficient in trouble shooting or making changes.  So flashing the BIOS always makes me nervous that I will screw something up.  So when I heard that MSI has a program called live update 6 that automatically updates the BIOS it got my interested.
    Can anyone give me some advice on how this program works?  Or are the compatibility issues more an issue of the past when Intel rushed the CPUs out and the MOBO makers had to play catch up?
    Thanks for everyone's advice and help.

    Hi
    Which exactly motherboard you're looking for? If you're afraid of bricking BIOS, then I suggest something like X99 MPower/XPower which has dual BIOS.
    LiveUpdate: downloads the update pack, does some magic within bootup and updates the BIOS. I don't know the exact process it does, but works just like installing a software: download, extract, install. Also MSI offers MFlash which lets YOU go through flashing process: download, prepare USB stick, boot from USB (or use MFlash within BIOS settings) and update.
    Risks: flashing BIOS is always a risk, no matter if it's MSI, Gigabyte or anyone else's brand. It's a chip, that if something goes wrong (for example system is not stable), then motherboard may get bricked and recovery may/may not be possible.

  • How Sun Update Connection Proxy really works

    Hi,
    Apolgies if this question is in the FAQ, but the FAQ link in the header text of this forum gives me a 404.
    I've been trawling the docs on Sun Update Connection Proxy and trying to understand how it works with regards caching. The docs are quite detailed in how to set it up, for example how to point to a proxy using http://<proxy-name>:3816 etc., and how to install patchsvr and how to start it.
    What seems to be missing from the manuals IMHO (and this all might become blatantly obvious once I've been using it a while) is any details on how the smpatch update process works end-to-end through a proxy, e.g. I know how to change the cache location using the patchsvr command but how and when is anything stored in that location? What are all the files and directories that reside under /var/sadm/spool, and how many of these relate to a proxy (LPS) server?
    Is smpatch supposed to clear out the .jar files in there or do I need to set up a job to do that regularly?
    Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

    Inside /var/sadm/spool there are several directories, I won't describe all of them, but for most purposes this should be enough:
    Client:
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/Database - stores patchsets (current2, etc)
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/xml - stores the MoTD files
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/entitlement - stores the entitlement file (note this is generated by the server on each request)
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/updatemanager/analysis.results - if you have the swupAuto cron job, this directory is used to hold analysis to speed up UM launch
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/ReadMe - holds the patch readme's (mostly for use with UM)
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/collection - holds a file containing information about available patchsets
    /var/sadm/spool/cache/category - holds a file describing the types of patches (currently Update Tools, Security, Recommended, and Generic)
    /var/sadm/spool/sunucLog - holds job_history.log
    Proxy:
    /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr - this holds all files required for analysis and patches with URL-encoded filenames, the files used to be stored in a more hierarchical directory structure, but this changed a few patch revisions ago.
    As for cleaning, in general it is safe to delete all files under /var/sadm/spool/cache/ as all of the patches are stored at /var/sadm/spool/ and most other files should be replaced on a regular basis automatically, however you may want to remove all of the patches too once you have completed your patching sessions - this is not done automatically. On the proxy you might not want to be so thorough - you would normally want to keep the patches (or at least keep the most recent ones - 180 days in this example):
    # cd /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr
    # ls | grep -v all_signed | xargs rm
    # find /var/sadm/spool/patchsvr/ -mtime +180 -exec rm {} \;Does this answer your questions, or do you need further explanation?

  • Does Convergent really work with Verizon for Collections?

    Hi There!
    I had some issues with Verizon a few months back, i won't get into the details, but needless to say i was ****** off enough to cancel my service after 11 years of being a customer.
    When they added up my last bill + termination fees it was around $1000, i don't tend to have that kind of money laying around, so i offered to make payments of a few hundred bucks a month ($200-$300) and was told that wasn't good enough, if i wasn't going to pay half at once they didn't care.
    So i have let it sit there and kept contacting back to see if i could set up a payment plan.
    I just got a letter from a Convergent Solutions the other day saying they are handling the collections on the account on behalf of verizon, and they have offered me a settlement for 60% of the debt. However, when i googled them, there are a lot of blog posts and things about them being a scam, and people who have paid them but still been contacted by verizon for the balance they owe. There are also over 200 disputes that had to go through BBB to be resolved.
    I have contacted Verizons Customer service and gotten no response
    So my questions are:
    1. Is convergent really working on behalf of verizon, and if i pay off the settlement with them, my account will be rectified?
    2. Convergent says they do NOT report any accounts to credit agencies. However they cannot promise that Verizon will not report it as negative, even though it's been paid. (Potentially negative as "Delinquent: Paid/Closed") Honestly, if it's still going to show up as a negative on my credit, i'm less motivated to fork over my whole tax refund to pay it off....so i would only want to pay it off with an agreement from Verizon/Convergent that it will not be reported to the credit agencies.
    Anyone have any advice/suggestions? The settlement offer expires on 1/31 so i'm on a short timetable, lol.
    Thank in advance for all your help!

  • I've moved my Aperture library to another computer, and masters are referencing an old path name.  How can I update these references?  Reloctating masters does not work in this case :(

    I've moved my Aperture library from one computer to another using Finder.
    I merged the library with one which was already on the computer.
    Now, the photos I imported have reference to the old path name on my old computer.
    How can I update these references as "Relocate Masters" does not work in this case?

    Just one suggestion to be able to reconnect all at once:
    Create a smart album containing the images with missing masters:
    File -> New ->  Smart Album,     and add a rule: File Status is "Missing"     (or File Status is "offline")
    Then select the images in this album and go to the File menu:
    and select:   File -> Locate referenced File
    If you are lucky, Aperture will reconnect all at once, if you point the first image version to its counterpart.

  • I need to update to 6.0 but it doesn't work--I've tried several times and it never gets past the stage of "connecting to update server"--so how can I update without uninstalling first and losing all my bookmarks and passwords?

    I have a MacBook Pro with Lion. Every few days Firefox will tell me, "you really need to update to 6.0," and I say, "yes please!" but then it says "connecting to update server" for ages and ages and nothing ever happens. I wouldn't mind uninstalling the old one and downloading a new one, except that I have lots of bookmarks and passwords saved, and I don't want to lose them all. So what's going on, how can I update?

    Thanks, but, using the "free" version of Reader, there is no opportunity to open nor import the xml data - the menu options do not exist - there is no import listed.
    If we try to open the xml file directly, then we get an error - something to the effect of "unsupported file type, or the file is corrupted".
    I just noticed in my Pro version that there is the command File ->Form Data ->Import Data to Form... command. Is this what you are referring to?
    What do you recommend? Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to purchase a few copies of Acrobat Pro for the reservations people to use? I was hoping that the free version of reader would do it, but perhaps not?
    Thanks again,
    Rob

    But how do you install the drivers if Bootcamp is running interference?
    Bottom line, I'ev tried to install three different versions of updated ATI driver sover the last few momnths and on each and every occassion have ended up with the original Bootcamp driver. A number of current games are unplayable on a Mac running Bootcamp as a result.
    And if I can't run the software I want, then Bootcamp is as useless as boobs on a bull.

  • TIME MACHINE - How does it really work?

    Dear Mac users and Apple;
    I am new to Mac. For most of my life I used Windows OS. One of the cool features on my new iMac 24'' is TM. In the past I used to use Norton Ghost for creating back ups and safeguarding my data.
    Though there is a lot of info on www.apple.com and in the forums I can not find any satisfactory information about the true way of how Time Machine (TM) works.
    Below I describe all my concerns, but in order to put them into perspective here is what I was used to on PC while using Norton Ghost. I would run a one time back up of my whole system drive (C:) and other drive (D:) which had my documents on it and then schedule regular back ups (weekly in my case). These were incremental back ups which only " added" the files which changed in the mean time. Of course, this method also meant that anything done between the back ups was at risk of being lost until next back up took place.
    When I stated using TM, I assumed a lot of how it works based on my experience described above. However, I ran across this forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6096304&#6096304 and got pretty confused as to how it really works. I searched for explanations but all I find is us users guessing. I believe Apple should provide its customers with clear explanation and documentation how TM works.
    If you read the long formum thread you will understand what I am talking about. If not here is a rough summary.
    A guy backed up his data using TM, then after checking it is there he deleted the originals from the source drive only to find out later that the back ups were deleted from TM as well.
    The thread goes on and these are the questions I have as a result - I kindly beg you to answer them for me:
    1. TM does 1st back up of the whole Mac, at first - correct? This data stays until TM runs out of space on the back up drive, correct?
    2.)TM does hourly back ups which are kept for 24 hrs (one day), then only a daily back up stays - which one out of the 24 is considered the daly back up? Or is it a separate back up?
    3.)TM does daily back ups which stay for a month then are deleted?
    4.)TM does weekly back up and this back up stays until TM runs out of space on the back up destination drive, correct? If yes, when does it take place?( 7days from the initial back up and then again each 7 days?
    5.) If I create a file and then delete it before hourly back up stores it, it is not backed up at all, correct?
    6.) If I create a file and then delete it once it was backed up by the hourly back up is it stored for 24 hours (one day) and then deleted?
    7.) If I create a file and delete it once it was backed up by the daily backup, it stays for a month in the back ups of TM but then is deleted?
    8.) If I create a file and it is backed up by the weekly back up, then is deleted - it resides in the weekly back up until TM runs out of space on the destination back up drive and deletes the original weekly back up, correct?
    From this, if my assumptions above are right, it means that only files backed up by the weekly back up are kept until back up destination drive has space left. Then it would mean that it is important for me to know when the weekly back up takes place, so that I know that "now is the time and the files I have on my source drive now will stay in the target back up drive as long as it has space".
    Further, it would mean that the hourly and daily back ups are kind of temporary back ups which give me the chance to restore the file within 24 hrs if backed up in the hourly back up, or restore it within one month if backed up by the daily back up. If backed up by the weekly back up, then it can be restored any time as long as the back up drive is not full. Is that correct?
    IF I do a forced back up (Ctrl click on TM in the dock and then order it " Back up now") is this a back up which stays until back up external disk is full or is it a temporary back up (like the hourly and/or daily)?
    Another issue is as follows: If I delete an application from my hard drive BUT it was backed up in the past by TM - can that application be launched automatically without first asking for my (users) permission from the TM's back up on the eternal hard drive? E.g. I install Adobe reader - it is backed up by TM. Then I uninstall it. Then, I download a PDF document, click it to open - does Adobe reader open from the TM back up? If NOT - great, that is how I expect it to work. If YES, then does it warn me about being opened from TM back up? YES it does warn me - great work apple. NO it does not - why? If the later is the case then if you exchange Adobe reader for spyware or malware or a virus, you have a vulnerability how viruses etc. can be reintroduced to system from TM back ups even after cleaned from the original hard disk. Please let me know how it really works.

    1. TM does 1st back up of the whole Mac, at first - correct? This data stays until TM runs out of space on the back up drive, correct?
    Respectively right and wrong. Out of all the hourly backups it makes, TM keeps only the first of each day for longer than 24 hours and one (presumably the first) of each week longer than one month. Any data which is not part of one of the retained backups is lost. Clearly this may happen long before the drive runs out of space and TM begins deleting the retained backups (oldest first).
    2.)TM does hourly back ups which are kept for 24 hrs (one day), then only a daily back up stays - which one out of the 24 is considered the daly back up? Or is it a separate back up?
    TM keeps only the first backup of each day for longer than 24 hours. When you bring up a daily backup in TM's browser, you will see on the big shiny black bar along the bottom not only the date but the precise time of the backup you are looking at.
    3.)TM does daily back ups which stay for a month then are deleted?
    One per week is retained (presumably the first but Apple isn't saying and I haven't seen that confirmed by anyone yet). The others are deleted.
    4.)TM does weekly back up and this back up stays until TM runs out of space on the back up destination drive, correct? If yes, when does it take place?( 7days from the initial back up and then again each 7 days?
    Don't know about timing. By analogy with the daily backups I would guess first of the week. But remember this is not a separate backup, it is one of the original hourly backups which survives the progressive culling process.
    5.) If I create a file and then delete it before hourly back up stores it, it is not backed up at all, correct?
    Correct.
    6.) If I create a file and then delete it once it was backed up by the hourly back up is it stored for 24 hours (one day) and then deleted?
    It is stored for at least 24 hours. If it was never on the first backup of any day it will not survive longer. Otherwise it will.
    7.) If I create a file and delete it once it was backed up by the daily backup, it stays for a month in the back ups of TM but then is deleted?
    If it was in the first backup of any day then it will be in the backup with that date so long as that backup is retained (at least 30 days and until the drive is full if that day is retained as the weekly backup).
    8.) If I create a file and it is backed up by the weekly back up, then is deleted - it resides in the weekly back up until TM runs out of space on the destination back up drive and deletes the original weekly back up, correct?
    If it is in the backup chosen as the weekly backup it will be available until that backup is deleted by TM for lack of space.
    I wouldn't advise thinking like this. If you wish to retain long term a particular file TM is not the answer. You should separately archive it outside TM. As has been pointed out elsewhere, you could just copy it to the drive TM is running on, but outside TM's backup folder (however note that this will reduce the space available for TM's backups).
    Correct.
    IF I do a forced back up (Ctrl click on TM in the dock and then order it " Back up now") is this a back up which stays until back up external disk is full or is it a temporary back up (like the hourly and/or daily)?
    Good question. I have no reason to think that forced backups are priviledged in any way, but who knows? Anyone got any comment?
    I install Adobe reader - it is backed up by TM. Then I uninstall it. Then, I download a PDF document, click it to open - does Adobe reader open from the TM back up?
    Nothing in the backups is available to you until you have restored it. Interesting question is: if an application is restored, are any other files its original installer would have placed in the system and are needed to run it restored as well? One would like to think so but maybe that's too hard for TM? I would recommend that any major application that has been disinstalled be reinstalled from the original disks rather than relying on TM. Of course, if you've just accidently trashed an application file you can restore it from TM no problem.
    Only after restoring it from TM can you use it.
    Hope these comments help and anyone with more info adds their piece. TM is proving more confusing than it looked at first glance!
