How do I get iTunes to organize my library? It doesn't put all of the songs in the right album.

How do I get iTunes to organize my music by album? It doesn't put all of the songs in the right album.

Thank you very much for the help with organizing iTunes. It really helped.
I have just put a lot of new music into iTunes. These are CD's I purchased elsewhere (not from iTunes).
I synced my iPad2 to iTunes and got all of the new stuff on the iPad but when I tried to sync my iPad3, it said it was syncing but none of the new stuff showed up. Help?.

How can I get iTunes to open to Library instead of the iTunes Store.  It does it on one of my computers, but I don't know how I did it.

For me, iTunes always opens to whatever I had selected previously when it was closed.
In other words, if I had Apps selected when I closed iTunes, the next time I opened iTunes it would be on Apps.

  • How do I get iTunes to organize albums in the order they were released

iTunes displays the albums in the order of the tile. It should display the albums in the order they were released how are you supposed to do this I've played with sort order and it makes no difference. This seems pretty basic way of organizing an artists music has Apple lost their collective mind with this release of Itunes?

Why does it absolutely have to display albums by the order they were released?  It can do what the programers want it to do.
You can sort by album, but then by multiple clicks on the album column header you can get album by artist and album by year.

  • How do I get iTunes to recognize my Library, my songs, and my playlists?

I moved my iTunes folder to an external hard drive (or had iTunes move it, I forget exactly how it was done, with a friends help), then erased the iTunes folder on my internal drive. Everything worked fine until I forgot, and started iTunes without having turned on the external drive. I can still tell iTunes to look for the folder on the external drive (it seems to see it according to what I do in preferences), but It still will not show my songs or playlists. Anyone able to help?

I was able to get iTunes to recognize the library and the individual tracks, by copying the iTunes folder from the external drive back to the internal drive. Preferences didn't seem to do it for me. I still wonder how to get the library to work from my external drive, though. I'd like help with that!

  • How do i get itunes to display my library (which is on an external hard drive)?  It worked OK on old PC, but not new my new laptop.   They are M4A files. are

My itunes library used to be on a PC - but shortly before the PC went to PC heaven I transferred the library onto an external hard drive.  It worked fine.   Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location.   I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.  I have tried holding down shift when starting itunes - but when I do that it looks for *.itl files, and all my files are M4A files.  What do I do next?

You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

If you want to delete a playlists from the iPod, in the Source in iTunes, click th eDisclosure triangle in front of the iPod name to display the playlists on the iPod.

my computer crashed and dont have itunes backed up, how can I get itunes restored.

Your media is only where you put it.
If you have failed to maintain a backup, then you may seriously be out of luck.
Apps can be redownloaded as many times as you like.
If you are in the US and running iTunes 10.3 or later, then it is possible to redownloaded music via iCloud from the purchase history in iTunes.
Outside the US, you can try contacting iTunes customer support.  Just keep in mind they are under no obligation to assist simply because the customer failed to maintain backups of the customers purchased content.

  • How do I stop Itunes from changing my library location

Is there just no answer to what should be a simple setting change?? No matter what I do, Itunes insists on changing my library location the instant there's any problem talking to my network share where all of my music is. This is absolutely ridiculous because this is on a laptop and there are times when the network connection is just not up yet, or whatever. Then it takes 10 minutes for me to change it back and let it figure everything out again. Has anyone ever been able to resolve this? I'd rather Itunes just return an error that tells me it can't read my library than to change it on me....

Have struggled with this issue in the past. In my experience, there is no simple, painless solution. I attempted to transfer my entire internal drive to my new external where there were copies of all the songs in place. Check to see how your library is organized on your network drive. Is it by media content (e.g. separate folders within /users/music/itunes/ folder such as Music, TV Shows, Movies, etc.)? Or are the various media types all lumped within a single iTunes Music Folder? If there is a discrepancy between your internal and external Library configurations iTunes struggles to cope. Can't say why this is  the case, but I found that the only solution was to throoughly uninstall itunes via terminal (or using an app such as 'Amnesia'), reinstalling iTunes, and creating the library from scratch using files that are located on the external/network drive. I'm a moderately savvy programmer and I couldn't for the life of me get iTunes to build my library from an XML playlist that I modified to reflect the changed directory location of the new library on  my external, but if you are more competent and patient than I am I'm convinced that the proper alteration of the Master library build would result in a seamless relocating of you media library as far as itunes is concerned. One last thing, make sure you click the 'I'll Add files myself later' option if you do choose to reinstall itunes just to cover your bases. sorry i can't give you a more helpful response--iTunes is a cruel mistress sometimes.

  • I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location?

I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location? If I use add file / folder to library, it scans the folder and then makes a copy of any file that is not in my library in the exact same location; I recal in older versions of iTunes being able to just drag my media folder into my library and it would update missing links.

Only the songs that are connected to iTunes will be copied when you consolidate to a new folder.
Splitting the media folder away from the usual location makes it harder to move iTunes in the future.
Are you go move everything back once you've tidied up or are you going to leave it that way? Either way I'd recommend you create an iTunes folder at the new location, an iTunes Media folder inside that, and consolidate to this new iTunes Media folder. You should also use the option File > LIbrary > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder"> if you have not already done so.
