How do I get photos outside of iPhoto?

I recently had to restore my computer and the iOS was updated to mountain lion or something... Anyways, all my photos are inside iPhoto. However with the new version of iOS I can't open that version of iPhoto on that macbook. So I copied the iPhoto icon they were able to save onto the new macbook pro onto an external HD and put it on an older software computer but I couldn't open those photos because the computer I opened it on already has a ton of pictures in iPhoto so it only opens that specific computers iPhoto.
What I want to know is if there's a way to get the pictures out of iPhoto and onto the newly formatted macbook pro? How do I open it?
Also... in all this confusion, when I do try to open iPhoto on the newly formatted macbook pro, it gives me a box that asks me to choose the iPhoto library, however there are no options to choose from. Now what?
Thanks for any and all help.

I recently had to restore my computer and the iOS was updated to mountain lion or something... Anyways, all my photos are inside iPhoto.
If I understand you correctly, you had to restore the hard drive of your Computer and the Mac OS X was upgraded to Mountain Lion. Now your old iPhoto version cannot any longer run with the new Mac OS version?
So I copied the iPhoto icon they were able to save onto the new macbook pro onto an external HD and put it on an older software computer but I couldn't open those photos because the computer I opened it on already has a ton of pictures in iPhoto so it only opens that specific computers iPhoto.
Do you mean you copied your iPhoto Library from an external HD to an older computer with an older iPhoto version to view your photos there? But iPhoto does not open this library, because there is already another, older iPhoto Library? Or did you copy the iPhoto Application to this older Mac?
What version of iPhoto do you have on your older Mac? And what is the version of iPhoto that created your current iPhoto Library? And what is the MacOS X version on the older Machine?  If the iPhoto version is iPhoto '06 or later, you should be able to switch to another iPhoto Library by double clicking the iPhoto Library icon in the Finder. Or by ctrl-clicking the iPhoto Library and by selecting "Open with" from the pop-up menu to open it in the correct iPhoto version.
What I want to know is if there's a way to get the pictures out of iPhoto and onto the newly formatted macbook pro? How do I open it?
Are you confusing the iPhoto application with your iPhoto Library? Your photos are inside a database package called something like "iPhoto Library.photolibrary" with an icon showing a fan of pictures. The iPhoto application does not contain the photos; you have to find the iPhoto library. Usually this library is in the Pictures folder in your home folder. Have your data in your home folder been restored, when your Mac has been restored? Or are all your data on the external drive that you mentioned?
Is there a newer iPhoto version on your newly installed Mac, compatible with Mt. Lion?
Also... in all this confusion, when I do try to open iPhoto on the newly formatted macbook pro, it gives me a box that asks me to choose the iPhoto library, however there are no options to choose from. Now what?
As I said above - find your iPhoto library. If it is on your external drive, then connect that disk to your Mac before you launch iPhoto. Then the photo library shoud be found.
Please post back with more information, so we can help you better.

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library?  It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library.  I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one.  They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device."  I hadn't touched the camera.  The message came by itself.  I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit.  Opening it back up, the pictures were gone.  Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IMovie '09 - How do I get photos in from iPhoto?  (It's not working!)

    Hi,
I have seen posts about difficulties accessing photos in iMovie '09 but can't seem to get it to work for me. I added more photos to iphoto and they won't show up in imovie. I put them in new folders then, but the folders show up with nothing inside. Then I try and drag and drop from iphoto and finder - into all sections of imovie and it still won't work. How do I do this?? I tried editing each photo in iphoto to see if that work work, but no luck still. I really want to add the last few photos to my project!
Thanks for any thoughts or insight!!

    Hi,
The problem can be that there is an '&' in the path to your iPhoto-library. I renamed some of my albums in iPhoto. For me this worked, but I'm still using iLife '06.
If this doesn’t help you can also just drag the photo’s from iPhoto into iMovie of iDVD.

  • I can't get photos outside of iPhoto!

Before this version I could navigate into the file folders of my photos. Is it possible with this version? They seems to have locked us out of the files but I am having difficulty organizing my pictures and if I could see into the file it sure would help. Can this be done?

You're posting in the iPhoto 6 forum but the question you mention is assocaited with later versions: 08 and 09. So I'm going to guess that you're in the wrong forum.
and if I could see into the file it sure would help.
No it wouldn't. If you're on 09 then how the files are arranged in the Finder has no necessary connection with how the are arranged in the iPhoto Window. The whole point of iPhoto is for you to organise your photos and let it manage the files.
What specific extra information do you think you will get looking at the files? Perhaps we can suggest another way of working.
    Anyway:
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside: Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • How do I get photos out of iPhoto?

I do not want to use iPhoto.  I am going to use Adobe Photoshop for editing and organizing.  Most of my images are not under iPhoto, but about 4 months of them are.  How do I access these images without iPhoto.  I tried to export them, but it did not work.  My HD is almost full and I picked about 2500 at once.  Does the export feature create another copy?  I don't want extras taking up space on the hard drive either.
    Thanks for any help!
    Julie

My HD is almost full and I picked about 2500 at once.  Does the export feature create another copy?
Yes, exporting will create another copy.
Inside the iPhoto Library the photos are not easily accessible. You could extract the "Masters" folder, but the organisation is not really easy to use.
Why not exporting your images in smaller batches, say 200 photos at a time? Export them to separate folders in your Pictures folder, or whereever you want them; check, that the export succeeded, and then delete them from your iPhoto library after exporting. Don't forget to empty the trash in iPhoto and on your Desktop. This way you will not need much duplicate space.
But I strongly recommend to make a backup copy of your iPhoto library on an external drive before you do that, just in case you discover later that some images did not export correctly.
Also, you know that you can use Photoshop from within iPhoto, if you setPhotoshop as external editor?

  • How do I get photo's from Iphoto to an hotmail post?

I am trying to mail some photo's that are in Iphoto with my hotmail, but how do I do this? I cannot drag a photo from iphoto into the web browser into my email message, so how do I do this?
    André

    Apple - Downloads - Email & Chat - Daniel’s HTTPMail Plug-in.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How do you get photos out of iphoto?

where are they stored on my hard drive? all i see in Pictures is iPhoto Library but how do i actually access the files in there, say if i wanted to put them on an external flash drive or something like that.

iPhoto is a Photo management program that keeps the photos in a data base - as in any database you access the data (Photos) via the database access methods
to put on a flash drive simply export your photos to a desktop folder, mount your flash drive and then drag that folder to the mounted flash drive

  • How can I get photos edited in iPhoto to update previously uploaded images in photo stream?

As soon as I import photos to iPhoto on my mac they upload to photostream, which is great, exept when I edit them (for example to remove red eye) they don't update on the photostream so when I look on my iPad they are the origanal photos. Can anyone tell me if there is a way of refreshing the pictures on the photostream with the latest edit. I have tried editing the photostream version but it takes me to the version in my iPhoto library which has already been edited. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    You can't do this.
Photostream is simply - and only - a replacement for importing. Once the file is imported them that's it. Photstream has no further role.

  • How To Burn Photos OUTSIDE of iPhoto?

Im tired of iPhoto, the whole program is just a mess. Every time i burn a disc from there it puts that whole mess of a puzzel of folders just to get to the photos. How do you burn discs outside of iphoto? I tried the burn folder, but it did nothing. every time i hit the burn button it told me to insert a disc (which I had already done, brand new, enough space, everything was fine about the disc) Why does apple make it so complicated to do such a normal task, almost want to go back to my PC. Same thing goes for DVDs, I cant burn a DVD for the life of me. Ive read the instructions on their support page, and follow them pecicly, and nothing. always just spaces out on me.

    Hi adamphoto,
This is what you have been doing....
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165523
this is what you want to do...
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
Can you explain again the exact steps you are going through to burn a CD/DVD.
What do you want to burn on the DVD?
this is what i am doing right now...
Create a burn folder. It should be listed in the left column of the finder window.
Drag the files/folders you want to burn on top of the burn folder in the left hand column.
Highlight the burn folder in the left hand column.
In the window on the right will be the folders/files you dragged into the burn folder. there will also be a burn button in that window.
    Click the burn button.
You will be asked to insert a disc.
    Insert a disc.
the little window will go away and another window will pop up and you will be asked to type in a name for the disc.
    Type in a name.
Follow instructions from there and the burning will start

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • How do I get Photos - iPhotos to work with my iPhone

I have a 2 month old Mac Mini, and noticed a system upgrade available 10.10.3 - I always download all that are offered.  10.10.3 loaded, and I proceeded to open iTunes and iPhoto and plug in my iPhone, All went well until I noticed PHOTOS  I opened it to see what it was and was asked to selected a library as it seemed the only option on offer I did and found a mass of over 3500 photos  in folders that I did not totally recognise, including one of Face photos. It was only then that I noticed a NO ENTRY SIGN on iPhotos.  Thanks to some Mac Forum advice I have now been able to install a new iPhotos 9.6.1 to replace this but I now have a big problem that I cannot edit the photos on my iPad or iPhone.
    I have 10.10.3 installed with iPhoto-9.6.1 - PHOTOS-1 - iTunes-12.1.2.27 & iOS-8.3 on the iPhone & iPad.
I Plug the iPhone into the Mac, iTunes can see it, click the camera icon I see a list of 30+ folders - 2 are ticked which are MC, it has 19 photos in it and PP, it has 1 photo in it - which is correct for the iPhone.
In PHOTOS when I plug in the iPhone, a new command appears in the top bar  ‘IMPORT’  click on that and the iPhone icon shows on the left side with a box to tick - ‘open this device’ - click it and the message is ‘NO PHOTOS’. Under Albums I find the same 30+ listed with MC containing 50 photos & PP with 33.
In iPhoto I plug in the iPhone & it is recognised with a  message on the right , LOADING… and there it stays STUCK but not crashed. Down the left side is listed the same 30+ albums, MC with 50 photos & PP with 33.
Question - how do I get Photos/iPhoto/iTunes/to communicate with my iPhone/iPad, to update the photo albums as they did before 10.10.3 & Photos were introduced to my system????    Your help please

    Thanks for your help III
BUT: I really don't get it! About ten days ago or so my iPhone 4s was suddenly able to hold on to the AirPort Express network.
But then yesterday all of a sudden the problem was back again!!! I didn't do ANYTHING! It was just back out of nowhere!
Wi-Fi connection on my iPhone came on... and off... and on... and so on, while my MacBook was working perfectly fine with the network!
So I reset the whole thing again on my MacBook with the AirPort utility, I reset the AirPort Express and I reset my iPhone... still not working... Honestly this freaks me out. Especially because it worked for more than a week and as I said I did not change a thing!!!
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve the problem other then reset everything? Or is there an explanation around for this occurence???
    Thanks for your Help!

  • I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I actually am illiterate on the use of the finder to to view photos in folders.  I guess I will go to a class at the local Apple store for a lesson on the uses of finder .
My method of viewing my photos are through events in I photo.
    1. Download  from camera or scan  in from old photos.
2  I organize photos into events by occasion, or happenings in a certain year, or a group of photos with memorabilia of a certain person from childhood and on. etc.
    3.  Because Iphoto does not allow rearranging as I was able to do in my old PC with Corell,  I drag all of the photos to an " album" on the left side of sceen.
    4.  I arrange photos in "order" after which I number each photo in sequence. I do this for a few of reasons.
              - if a photo is accidentally deleted I know it.  I can usually remedy this by checking my trash or
    rescanning.
              - I can sort by title without complications and this holds in "album"
    5.  The pictures will re arrange automatially to match the album in I photo.
    6.  This worked great in I-photo 09 but now in mountain lion the pictures in events go back to "
sort by date" and will not hold "sort to Title"each time I photo is closed down.  What a nuicance it is to have to go  to view and click "title"  again and again every time Iphoto is opened.
    7. Can I go back to Photo 09? .

How do you get Photos to recognize the “old” iPhoto Library on an external drive without it copying it to the internal drive on the computer which is low in HD space?

Launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key.
This will show the Library Chooser panel. Select the library on the external drive. Photos will create a Photos Library on the same drive.
Photos may not be able to open the library, however, if your external drive has an incompatible file system. It needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and locally mounted, not a remotely mounted volume, as described here:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
