How do I get remove unwanted RAID slices?

I have two 300GB firewire drives. I have them configured as a mirrored RAID set. One drive failed and the RAID volume went into a degraded status. I replaced the drive, peformed a rebuild, and the drive is part of the the mirrored RAID set again and working properly - I can see both drives working in sync when I do reads/writes.
However, the disk utility shows the mirrored RAID still in a degraded status. I noticed that I have an extra slice now (Number of Slices: 3) and my assumption is that the RAID logic thinks I'm supposed to have another disk in this configuration. How do I fix this? Is there a safe way for me to remove this extra slice so it does how a degraded status any more?
Help with this is greatly appreciated.
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I never got an answer but figured it out by lots of searching.
To remove a refererence to a failed drive (slice in my raid set) after I rebuilt w/ a new one. Thus getting rid of the extra slices issue:
diskutil removefromraid [slice uuid] [device node]

  • How can I temporarily remove a RAID set but keep the data?

I recently had to restore my Netgear ReadyNAS to factory settings, which meant that I needed to make a backup of its data and restore it afterwards. The only possible way to back up the 8.5Tb of data was to get 9Tb of WD Red disks and somehow use them - so my immediate thought was that the Mac Pro would be a good idea. I t had four drives in it, but three of them were not being used by the OS so they could be temporarily removed.
So I replaced three of my four Mac Pro drives with new 3Tb drives and used Disk Utility to set them up as a JBOD. I then used this JBOD drive to back up the NAS and restore it again after I had re-installed its O/S (the whole thing took two weeks!!!).
So now I'm in the following situation:
    * I want to tear down the JBOD set and take the three new drives out of the Mac Pro again and replace them with the drives I normally use there so that I can go back to making music (which is what I usually use it for).
    * I also want to be able to put the new drives back in and read the data as a JBOD again if needed (in case anything is discovered to be amiss with my ReadyNAS backup/restore operation) - let's say for the next month I'll plan to keep the old drives around for safety.
How can I remove the JBOD set in such a way that I can set it up again using the same drives, and access the data (i.e. I don't want to delete the RAID set the usual way because that will delete the data too - apparently...)?

Going to ask the mods to move this to MacPro, Hatter can answer your question, but I'm pretty sure if you power down and remove the RAID drives, you can put them in back again and boot up and the RAID will still be recognized as the info is stored on the drives themselves in the GUID/MBR of each drive in the set.
Also you should know, there is a new MacPro coming and it doesn't accept internal drives, only external.
So you should prepare and have some sort of external hardware redundancy for your data that isn't dependent on the Mac HFS+ formatting as Windows doesn't read that.
Perhaps exFAT would be better as both platforms can read/write that, but if the drives are going to be used with a PC ever, they need to be formatted by Windows for exFAT to get it right. Check first before you commit to copying huge data over.
Anyway research it, because if your MacPro dies, you might be up the creek and have some issues getting at all that data since it's in a RAID, external options might not work correctly or reliably for RAID.
Also consider talking to the fellows at MacGuru's, they are external RAID box setup experts for Mac's, sounds like you need a RAID 5 box, gives redundancy and can connect to any computer.
Hardware RAID is more reliable than software ones, cross platform as well.
    good luck.

  • HOW DO YOU GET TO THE RAID SETTINGS ON THIS THING (GT60 2O)???

Dude... I been online for 40 minutes looking for instructions on how to get around this box. I can't find anything relevant, so I'm just gonna ask. How do you get to the settings for SUPER RAID 2? I can't find any information on it and now I'm really getting frustrated!! Any help would be appreciated.

First go into your BIOS and set the controller to RAID instead of AHCI/IDE/whatever it is.
You should then be able to use some key combination (such as ALT+H or whatever it is) to enter the Intel Raid ROM and setup the RAID in there.

  • How does one completely remove unwanted Apps? It seems that prior to IOS 5.0 I could do that and now cann't.

I am totally new to APPLE products and have for years avoided getting anything APPLE due to interface issues with other operations systems.  I have unwanted apps and want to completely remove them from my IPhone 3GS with IOS 5.0... I seems that in the past (prior to the IOS 5.0 upgrade) I was able to do this, and now I can't.
Another issue; attempted to download the manual for the IOS 5.0 upgrade, system states that it has downloaded however it's nowhere to be found, hmmmm?

First of all where do you want to delete your apps from, your iPhone or iTunes? If you delete your games from iTunes and keep them on your phone, when you connect your iDevice it'll sync, if you delete it from your iPhone and leave it on your iTunes, it'll still sync. So if you want to delete all apps, 1 Delete all apps on your iPhone and 2 delete all apps on iTunes as well. Also when you download apps on your iPhone or computer, iCloud automatically puts them on your devices. About the second issue, to be honest I don't know

  • How to find and remove unwanted s/w?

I downloaded free version of ;'Little Snitch'.  It now regularly throws up an invite window to (buy &) upgrade.  This message s/w is what I would dearly love to remove.

Malicious software doesn't always require a administrative password to gain "root" powers, thus control the entire machine, in order to be destructive. It can do a lot just running in what's nicknamed "user space".
Any user level from Guest to Admin can run a program on the machine, as long as this condition exists, the potential for malware being run on the machine exists in some privilege level or another depending upon the users access level.
The intention of some malware may to be to run in a lower privilege mode of the user and monitor the user and or their files for valuable information like credit card numbers and passwords entered, then to pass this information online.
Or it might be that the initial malware could only install a small portion of itself on the users machine, thus needs to "phone home" to download the bigger payload.
There are 65535 networking ports on modern computers, only a small fraction of those ports are used, so it leaves plenty of ports available for other uses, like for malicious purposes.
Compromised web browsers can open new ports to make stealthy connections to command and control servers or to download more malicious software, or even upload the contents of a users files much like users upload files to websites.
Where LittleSnitch comes into play is it's a outgoing firewall, which is the opposite of the incoming firewall in OS X. It watches all processes on the machine and when they attempt to make a outgoing connection it doesn't recognize or it's out of bounds of what it has been allowed, it will then flag the user for approval.
It also has a popup/fade-away window that informs the use of approved software making outgoing/incoming transmissions so in case a approved one (on a approved port) gets compromised (like a browser for instance) it will show unusual activity the user is not requesting.
LittleSnitch keeps the advanced user "in the loop" of the hidden outgoings  with their machine. Apple doesn't employ a outgoing firewall because they don't want to scare users unnecessarily.
LittleSnitch is not a 100% guaranty to prevent malware, it runs in the root level space so it's safe from "user space" malware.
All bets are off if the user gives malware their admin password, thus gaining "root" access, wether or not LS is installed or not.
In the past not many Mac users ran LittleSnitch, however today it's more common and malware writers had to adapt to attempt to remove LS if they gained root access on the machine.
There exists the possibility the malware writer doesn't know about LS, or is careless or can't remove it for some reason or another, which will give the experienced Mac user running LS a upper hand, which they can then notify others of the malware. or unsual outgoing network connections.
Again it's to have more eyes out there watching instead of being blindfolded.

  • How do you get your site removed from the reported attack sites list?

    Hi,
Our site https://mail.ccgs.nsw.edu.au/owa appears to be on the 'reported attack sites' or reported web forgeries' lists and is getting blocked in Firefox. This is a mater of urgency as we use Firefox as our web browser in this organization and there is a site wide outage, none of our staff can use their webmail. How do we get removed from this list?
When we have the site in the "Allowed Sites" list it still does not load.
When we un-tick "Block reported attack sites" and "Block reported web forgeries" the site works. Though we do not want to untick these for our users for security purposes.
    Regards

I am not seeing this problem currently with that URL. Firefox refreshes the site list from Google quite frequently. You can check for new files in the following folder and if they are not getting refreshed, I suppose you could try deleting them.
    C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\''profilename''\safebrowsing
Note that this is under the Local branch (location of cache) and not the Roaming branch (location of preferences, extensions, etc.)

  • RAID removing missing/damaged slice from mirror

I had a disk fail from a mirror RAID config. I replaced it with a new driver and added it to the array. I repaired the array. Now I end up with an extra slice for the disk that failed originally. How do I get rid of it?

Just remove each disk from the array. They will appear on your Desktop with same names, so you may want to rename them. Delete the array entry in the RAID panel of Disk Utility. This is a simple process with a mirrored RAID, and there should be no loss of the data on either drive. I've done this several times over the years.
I am a strong believer in CYA, so usually I have backups of the array just in case, but so far I've never encountered any problems with breaking a mirrored RAID.

I share my iTunes accont with my kids. Many of the songs that they purchase, I do not want in my iphone Library, and I don't want them to play when I have my phone on shuffle. How an I remove unwanted songs from my phone library withot affecting their devices?

These are the downsides of a shared library because if you delete the song from your library it will get also automatically  deleted from your kids library. If you want to proceed then please follow this guide: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4915

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
If they were SATA and running on PCI SATA controller, very popular and common really in G4s, more options would be open.

  • How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store?

How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store? So you understand better what I'm referring to:
I have the App Store icon in the Dock. When there's an update a red number appears on said icon. Well, I went to check on the updates and it's for 4 different applications I either no longer have or use. One of them is an update for Lion OS users. I'm still on Snow Leopard, so it doesn't even apply to me.
So there they sit... I'm not going to download the updates... so how do I get rid of them?

    Hi Andy ..
    no longer have or use
If there are updates available for apps you have deleted, try this.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
Move the Cache.db and Updates files from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.
Empty the Trash, restart your Mac.
For any apps you still have installed but do not use, the updates will still be available from the Updates top of the App Store window and show on the red badge on the App Store icon in the Dock.
