How do I import t2i footage to FCE?

I shoot on a t2i and i use MPEG streamclip to convert into AIC at a .mov file but whenever i go to put the clip into the time line, rendering is always needed. Also, the audio will not be in sync.
i've sort of just had to deal with these problems for a while, but i've noticed a certain loss in quality and frame drops. I'm hoping there's some way to make this work for me. any ideas?

rendering is always needed.
This usually indicates that your clip properties do not match your sequence settings.
The T2i shoots HD video as H.264 in either 1920x1080 or 1280x720 frame sizes, all in P or progressive mode.   If you shoot 1920x1080, make sure you shoot at 30fps.  If you shoot 1280x720 make sure you shoot at 60fps.  (In North America)
Then, in MPEG Streamclip, convert as follows:
For 1920x1080p30, convert to QT/AIC 1920x1080i30  (interlaced)
For 1280x720p60, convert to QT/AIC 1280x720p30
In FCE, you need to select an Easy Setup that has a frame size & frame rate that corresponds to your converted video.   Select one of the AVCHD AIC easy setups that matches your converted video.  (Do not select the HDV easy setups.)  Then create a new sequence.  Then place your clips in the new sequence.
Provided the codec, frame size & frame rate match, all should be well.

  • How to import 1080i60 footage in FCE?

This is the continuation of a former question where I was wondering about the crappy results of exporting a sequence from FCE. Turns out that the problem occurs much earlier, during import.
So here it goes: I have a Sony CV550V camcorder recording in 1080i60 AVCHD. I use FCE Log and Transfer to import the footage. At this early stage ALREADY, I can see the fields offset with respect to one another in the Log and Transfer preview window. If I look at the footage by connecting my camcorder to my HD TV, I see no such artifact.
I looked at the FCE manual, tried all options of the Log and Transfer window (ZERO as far as I can see), but it does not seem that I have any choice on how FCE imports 1080i60 AVCHD footage. Am I doomed? I have heard from users of Sony Vegas software for instance, and they do not have such artifacts...
    Thanks for your advice.

"Completely wrong" is a bit harsh, but indeed the whole issue is addressed in threadID=2497894 "How to export/convert FCE movies into AVCHD format?"

  • How can I import .mov footage with original pixel aspect ratio?

So the footage is 720x480 Square Pixels (1.0), 29.97 fps, progressive .mov but when I import it into Premiere Pro, they come up compressed as D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) automatically. When I try to Interpret Footage, it simply adds black bars. Why can't it just import correctly? When I preview the original footage, it plays back correctly but the preview inside Premiere Pro shows the distorted version... Please and thank you!!!

The suggestion about "new item" above was short. Here's the "full" version. In the Project Panel, go to the lower right corner ... click on the "New Item" Icon ... as shown here:
The first item on the pop-up menu that will appear should be "Sequence" ... click on it and just say ok at the next screen without even reading it. It's irrelevant, really.
Then going back to your project panel (we assume you've already imported your footage into it) click & drag a clip from the proj. panel to the timeline, or move one from the "Source monitor" to the timeline ... you should get a pop-up asking if you want the timeline changed to your footage, or your footage changed to the timeline. Take the timeline/sequence settings changed to match footage, and go.
That SHOULD take care of the problem in the vast majority of cases. It is such a simple fix, and so often the easiest and "correctist", that it's worth a try. Navigating the choices of setting up sequences is best left for those people who say, study GPU algorithms for a couple hours before going to bed for the sheer exhilaration of it ... unless, of course, PrPro actuall does a face-plant with your footage. But it mostly works good at it ... once you just let it ... so you might give that a try, takes what ... 20 seconds to see if it works?

  • P2 to HD and now what?  How do I import the footage?

Hello all. Well, once again, Final Cut 6 is making me feel rather... ignorant.
I shot 1 8 gig P2 cards worth of video with audio.
I created a directory on my laptop, connected the HVX to the MacBookPro via firewire, then, transferred the Contents directory (and all of the directories inside) to the harddrive.
Now, I want to look at and use the footage... but I haven't been able to discover how to import the data into Final Cut.
Can anyone point out where in the manual this specific workflow is covered or some tips of working this way? Also, let's say I had 2 P2 cards and some of the recording flowed over to the second card... how do you re-connect the footage if you must drag the data to a computer's harddrive while in the field?
    Thanks in advance!
    -G

    Shane,
You know, this is the stuff I wish I could find in the manual! You're awesome.
You wrote: "Now, the P2 import function basically just wraps the footage in a QT wrapper. IF you shot DVCPRO HD 720p, then the clips will import best using that codec. If you shot DVCPRO 50, then import into that codec. AIC and ProRes options are for AVCHD formats. It is best to work with DVCPRO HD natively."
My question is this... and maybe I should find and take a class somewhere... In 3D software, if I've built an object and I know I need to apply a given texture map to a surface, I've identified the surface myself, I've set the method of mapping (x planar, cubic, UV, etc) and I identify and load the map I've saved from Photoshop, saved in a format I've selected... etc, etc.
Basically, what I'm getting at is that I'm used to absolute control. At least back in the days of film, I knew the emulsion, I knew the pitch of the sprockets and I knew how to run strips across a sync block - I knew everything going on in front of me!
But with Final Cut, I feel as though the software is in complete control and has automatically chosen settings under the hood. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much, but, with the fx work I create, every pass of compression I encounter is just one more chance to make a shot unusable. So, when you mention the DVCPro codecs, how do I know Final Cut is using them. And if I want to import uncompressed, how can I do that?
I thank you - you've been most helpful!!!

  • How can I import DVD footage in Final Cut Pro X

I want to edit a showreel of my own work in Final Cut Pro X (version 10.1.4). A lot of my old footage is only available on DVD. I need to get this footage into Final Cut Pro X but don't know how to do this. There are programs to convert DVD to DV but I don't know which one to use, and how to use them.

The script provided by MPEG Streamclip worked for me.
But there is an alternate way, which is basically doing by hand what the script does.
The actual component that is needed is stored inside an archive file in the inside the package. This file needs to be copied to a place where the system can see it.
Here are detailed instructions. Be sure you fully understand before putting any files in the Library folders, as described below. No guarantees, but if followed correctly I believe this works.
    1) Double-click the .dmg file.
    2) Inside there are two folders. Open the one that says "For Quicktime 6.4 or later..."
    3) Control-click the QuickTimeMPEG32.pkg and choose "Show Package Contents".
    4) Copy the file "Archive.pax.gz" somewhere else on your mac - I will use the Desktop as an example.
    5) Double click the copy of "Archive.pax.gz" on your desktop. It will expand and create a folder on the desktop called "System".
    6) Inside the folder called "System" is a folder "Library" and then "Quicktime", with a single file called "QuickTimeMPEG2.component".
This is the file that MPEG Streamclip needs!
    7) I suggest you place this file in your own user's Library. To do this, hold down the option key and select Library from the Go menu in the Finder. There, if it does not exist already, create a folder "QuickTime" and copy the component there. This should work.
Note: the script actually places the component in a different location - one which I think should not be messed with (inside /System/Library).
I think it should work in the user's Library, but if not I would put in /Library (the Library at the root of the drive) before trying the location above.

  • How can I import XDCAM footage from files that have been taken off the card?

    Hi,
I am trying to log and transfer footage that has been taken off SxS cards and put onto an external hard drive. I've downloaded the Sony plug-ins for my computer, but still can't import anything in Log and Transfer. Can anyone help?

Was THE ENTIRE CARD backed up?  Everything?  The full card structure?  If not, then FCP won't see it...it'll say the directory structure is invalid.  IN that case you might need to use the XDCAM TRANSFER UTILITY...separate app that can transcode the footage to QT FCP can use.

  • Importing DVcam footage into FCE

Just got a sony DSR PD150 and want to make the most of shooting in 16:9 DVcam mode.
I assume that it should give better results than shooting in plain old DV mode.
What settings do I use in FCE to get this extra qualityness?
At the moment I am importing in "dv-pal 32khz anamorphic", but don't really see any special 'DVcam-ness'
    Am i missing something?

I assume that it should give better results than shooting in plain old DV mode
You assume incorrectly. Both DV and DVCam are the same codec: DV25. The only differences are tape speed and track pitch ... and DVCam does have locked audio while DV doesn't. The quality will be identical if shot in with the same camera/lens combination.
    There is no DVCam-ness.

  • How Do you import C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC

I just tried importing  Canon C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC, but get no sound. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and I pray I don't have to convert this footage before bringing it in. Is there a workflow anyone can recommend? Do I have to convert the footage first? Thanks, Lucian

    Lucian,
PrPro should work natively with the Canon C100 footage ... it works with almost everything out there. And with the C100 shooting MP-4, AVCHD, & H.264, those are all handled easily by PrPro.
My question ... I would surmise (from what little info you include) you are shooting AVCHD? The reason I say this is that format splits audio & video into different files ... so it's a bit trickier to "import" than others that have the a & v in one file. Make sure you copied the whole top-leveL FOLDER and all sub-folders (not just the footage or contents of a folder) from the cam/card into the computer for AVCHD ... and then when you import into a project via the media browser your audio & video should be all connected by PrPro.
There have been numerous threads here where AVCHD users have "lost" their audio, only to find they'd simply left it behind by NOT copying all the folders & subfolders their camera had created.

  • Importing H.264 into FCE without decoding/re-encoding. How?

QuickTime cannot open my Handycam VOB files (mpgv/a52) so I'm using ffmpegX to convert them to H.264 (4000+ kbps). when I import the H.264 files into FCE, FCE insists on decoding the files, taking a long time to do so and producing very large in-project media files. I tried converting to the DV format; same problem.
I seem to remember with iMovie that one could place their media files into the project package in a specific format and iMovie wouldn't re-encode them. if I'm importing H.264 files into FCE, what format should they be exactly (video and audio), and how could I import them into an FCE project without FCE decoding/re-encoding them? I'd prefer to use H.264/Dolby+AC3 if possible.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

Ok, you should be converting directly to DV or Apple Intermediate Codec if you intend to edit the video in FCE. Not to H.264 and then importing the H.264 into FCE. You're going from one highly compressed format to another highly compressed format and then FCE is trying to render it into something it can edit.
Also, you can't directly import 5.1 audio into FCE. Even though FCE supports up to 99 audio tracks in a project, you can only import or export a single stereo pair at a time. There are ways to trick it out, but you can't do 5.1 all at once directly in FCE.
Have you tried MPEG Streamclip instead of ffmpegX to do your conversions?

  • Need help importing Hi8 footage into FCE4

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Digital 8 TRV310 camcorder. I'd like to be able to import the Sony footage directly into FCE 4 but am having trouble.
I've successfully imported Hi8 footage from the TRV310 into FCE 4 in the past (it's been a couple years) but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it (it had something to do with Easy Setup and choosing 'device control = none' or something like that. I can't seem to find that option anymore and the only 'device control none' is 'DV-NTSC DV Converter' and that selection doesn't work for the import).
Here is the process that I am going through:
    1. I hook my Sony TRV310 up to my Mac Pro via a firewire 400 cable, turn the camera on and switch it to VTR (play) mode. I manually cue to the beginning of the footage I want to capture.
    2. Before attempting to import Sony footage into FCE 4 I go to 'easy setup' and dial in format=NTSC and use=DV-NTSC then click the setup button. I then go to file-->capture and a small window pops up indicating that capture is being initialized.
    3. The the 'capture window' pops up with preview screen indicating that 'preview has been disabled'
    4. I then hit the 'play' button in the capture window and then hit the 'capture now' button.
A black window with 'Final Cut Express and Apple logo' pops up for a few seconds, then a warning window pops up which states 'this operation could not be completed as there is no video'.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dennis

    Sounds pretty close to me.
Try starting a NEW Project the the DV Converter option selected , you may not have initiated the DV Converter option.
Also there is no device control, so the Capture Now will not work, Start the camera manually and use the Escape key to stop capture.

  • Import DVD footage?  Encore/Premiere/AfterEffects?

Hi.  I have a project to remap the sound for DVD video footage.  How can I import this footage into a QuickTime format or any other format that one of my Creative Suite 4 or 5 products will recognize?  Once I import the footage I can refoley/remap the sound by changing its soundtrack using either the Audio Software that I have exclusively or along timecode and match the audio from the Audio Software in a video suite such as Premiere or preferably After Effects (with which I'm more familiar).  Is this possible?  Do I need a DVD ripping software instead?  What are this forum's members' suggestions?
    Any help is appreciated.

  • How do I import file (rather than link) into Premiere

I'm just trying out Premiere, having come from FCP.
One thing I'm struggling with is how best to import AVCHD footage from my Panasonic GH1.
So, I plug my camera into to my MacPro and its SD memory card mounts on the desktop. From within PPro, I use the Media Browser or the Bridge and navigate to the STREAM folder that contains the MTS files. If I select an MTS file and chose import, the file appears in the Project list window but is NOT copied to my scratch disk; PPro only creates a link to the file.
Is there any way to get the file copied to my scratch disk whenever I choose import, so that I can make file ingestion a one step process?
Apologies if this is a simple question but I haven't found an answer yet.

Is there any way to get the file copied to my scratch disk whenever I choose import, so that I can make file ingestion a one step process?
No.  It's a two step process.  Copy the entire card over using Finder, then do your thing in PP.

Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap to convert your T2i video files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Import the QT/AIC files into FCE ... using an appropriate AIC easy setup in FCE.  (The easy setup choice depends on how you shot your video ... 720p30, 1080i60 etc.)
