How do I make a very simple network?

I have my macbook connected to the internet wirelessly using the Time Capsule. I have also plugged in an emac into the time capsule using and ethernet cable.
My understanding is that I should be able to have access to the emac from the macbook or visa versa. But how?

Firstly you've got to turn on file sharing on the computers you'd like to access, to do this, open System Preferences, click Sharing, then click the box next to File Sharing. Now if you open the Finder on the other computer, you should hopefully see the computer listed in the sidebar. Click it and you'll see the public folder(s) of different users, but if you want to access everything that your user account on that computer can access, click Connect As... then enter the username and password for your account on that computer.
That should hopefully be it, though you might find screen sharing handy too, it's turned on in pretty much the same way as file sharing and as the name would suggest, allows you to control a computer remotely.

I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
I would appreciate any assistance,

I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work? If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

How do I make the Wi-Fi network a "known network" on the iPad 2 so it joins automatically?

I am able to find the network and connect manually but whenever I turn off the Wi-Fi network (so the kids don't abuse it) and turn it back on again, the iPad does not automatically connect. Why not? Can I change the settings to make it connect automatically?

In settings turn "Ask to join networks" on.

Very simple network question

Forgive my stupidity asking this question...
I have an iBook G4 and two Windows PCs (one W2K, one XP) all happily sharing a wi-fi network using Airport Express.
I am about to dash out to the shops to buy a USB printer so that we can all print wirelessly, using iFelix's fab website for guidance. My incredibly dumb question is this: do I need to establish any kind of network before embarking on the printer-sharing project, or, by the very fact that we are all sharing a wi-fi network, are we already three "networked" computers??
I don't want to share any files between the computers, just a printer. Is there anything I need to do beforehand to create a network, or are we already one??

Sanhodo: there are reports of problems with windows sharing a printer to a wireless iBook. You should read iFelix guide to wireless printing (run a google search), it will shed some light on the subject.
JFYI, the setup of Claudine is completely different from yours, since she will connect the printer to THE ROUTER, not to a computer --which is your case-- and therefore she will avoid the problems of windows printer sharing...

Make a Very Simple Shape a Bit 3D and repeat it.

I have a full page web illustration for a background made up of this shape:
I want to make it a little more interesting than just flat and you can see my attempts based on web 2 shiny button tutorials. But that's not what I want. In fact, I think I just want like a Photoshop bevel.
Trouble is, that my illustration has about 60 of these shapes of about 7 different colors, different sizes and rotate. I have been looking at using shapes but that still doesn't feel particularly intuitive to me yet.
Anyway to summarise, I have a large, flat, web image with lots of flat colored shapes that I want to make a bit more solid looking. I could do with a few pointers.

Perhaps you just want a 3 D effect with a bevel you can control the height of the extrude as well as the bevel.
You can turn them into symbols and use the symbol tools to color them scale and transform as well or graphic styles to applied to various shapes.
If you use a graphic style you have to color them after applying the styles as you would with a symbol.

How can I make a DVD with a VERY simple menu

I want to create a DVD that autostarts with an opening menu containing a title, a picture and a play button - nothing else. The DVD will contain only one video (created in i-Movie). I want to press "Play" from the opening menu and the video will play. I don't seem to be able to create anything less than a 2-level menu.

From iMovie - do not use Share to iDVD - but - Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res. as result will lose quality)
In iDVD - I select a very simple Menu - Old themes -> Brushed Metal
Then in iDVD click on Media button and on Movie and here select Your Movie and drop it into iDVD Menu window.
Now You get a Play movie title/button - If You also get Play Scenes - then select this title and erase it if You don't want it.

It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -

If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

Unplug the USB cable from the printer. Plug your printer into your wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
Next, on each computer, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. Install it and select "Network" installation when it asks.

The registry method does not work with 8.1. I found this out the hard way. Doing it on 8.1 will leave you reinstalling the OS if you didn't do a SRP beforehand.

It's actually even easier than using Save As to see the full path to the currently open document. Just do a "Secondary click" on the document title in its window's title bar.
Like you, I relied upon Save As my whole life to check a file's location and considered it a must-have capability. Turns out it's even faster to use the single-click method to reveal the full path to the open document. It displays the entire path to the current document starting from the level of your Mac, and works for files stored on drives as well as iCloud.
If you're not sure how to do a secondary click, go into System Preferences, select Trackpad, Point & Click to find the current preference for secondary click on your Mac. If you happen to have a mouse with more than one button, it's probably the right button. As a trackpad user, I check the box to "Click or tap with two fingers," so a simple two finger tap on the title of an open document reveals its full path. This feature actually has been around for a very long time.
Note that this is not the same thing as the Autosave and Versions menu, which is exposed using a little drop down triangle to the right of the title. There is no visual clue for the presence of this feature - you just have to know it's there, probably because this feature goes all the way back to pre-OS X days.
