How do i recover disk space after deleting windows partition?

I have a macbook pro running on maverick. I removed the windows partition using bootcamp assistant, but I did not gain the disk space back. The disk space is 500gb but it's still showing 250gb?

Yes, that matters. So your partition map looks something like this:
You see one single space surrounded in blue with the disk name in the center, sort of like the above. But, you say that this space is only 250 GBs of your 500 GB drive. In other words the space in the Size field reads 250 GBs, mol? Am I correct in my understanding?
I suggest you might give this a try: repair the hard drive using Disk Utility. Then restart the computer. See if that recovers the space. It would also help if you could send me a screen image like mine but of your Disk Utility display on the same settings.

  • Why Oracle Linux 5 cannot recover disk space after delete files ?

    Folks,
Hello. When I create a Virtual Machine for Oracle Linux 5 to install EBS R12, I allocate 300GB to the VM. I download EBS R12 Source Files (45.7GB) and unzip the files (46GB). Total size of stage area directory(EBS_R12) is 91.7GB.
Because some files are corrupted and cannot install, I move the folder EBS_R12 into trash but cannot empty trash. I move EBS_R12 from trash back to the directory. Then at root user, use command "rm -rf " to delete EBS_R12 completely.
I shut down Oracle Linux 5 and restart it, 91.7GB disk space cannot recover.
I download some other files into Oracle Linux files and then delete those files, but disk space cannot be recovered either.
It seems that OEL5 virtual disk only can expand but cannot be reduced. The VM disk space is less than 200GB now and not enough to install EBS R12.
Can any folks tell me how to make 91.7GB disk space and some more disk space come up ?

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
Host OS is Windows 7, Guest OS is Oracle Linux 5 on the top of VMPlayer 3. The VM of Oracle Linux 5 is created on the external USB drive and not on the local hard disk.
There is a directory /tmp/VMwareDnd/376c7cae/EBS_R12 in Oracle Linux 5 file system. I copy/Paste the folder of EBS_R12 from Windows 7 into Oracle Linux 5. All of zip files and unzipped files are placed in the folder of EBS_R12.
After EBS_R12 is deleted, the external USB drive(F:) doesn't come up 91.7GB disk space.
    My question is:
Where to run "boot>linux rescue" command ?
Does this command work correctly in the external USB drive ?

  • Recovering disk space after deleting files.

    Hello,
I am used to using Panther and now I'm using Leopard. When I deleted files then emptied the trash and later logged out or shut down it would ask me do I want to recover the disk space on my drive, then once this is finished I could see the more space on my hard drive. I find now that with Leopard I have deleted a lot of old music etc that I copied over and I have emptied the trash but the file space doesn't get reclaimed. So, my question is: does emptying the trash really delete the fills or is there something I need to do additionally to get the disk space back once I delete something.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem. I transferred and deleted several gigs of music and photo files but the hard drive is not recognizing the free space. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  • Why can't I recover disc space after removing Windows partition?

    Greetings,
I have an early 2008 iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo with a 500 GB HD that I have steadily updated from Leopard to Mountain Lion.  I also had partitioned my HD using Bootcamp 2.0 to run Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything hummed along nicely until the upgrade to OS 10.8.2. After that I could no longer start up in the Windows partition, ostensibly due to system registry files having become corrupt (or missing).  After several vain attempts at recovering Vista, I determined to start over using Bootcamp (now upgraded to 5.0), but 5.0 would install Windows 7, apparently not Vista. I was able to remove the Windows partition using Bootcamp 5.0 (the Windows drive no longer shows up at start up when I hold down the option key Macintosh HD and Recovery 10.8.2 remain).  I was hoping to recover the remaining HD space for the Mac.  In Disc Utliity, it shows the Mac HD occupies 337 GB of space (about 86 GB is free). The remaining 162 GB is greyed out.  If I resize the Mac HD to take up the remaining space and attempt to repartition it says "Partition Failed -- couldn't modify partition map because file system verification failed".
I would like to recoup as much of the 162 GB as feasible, but at this point neither Bootcamp nor Disc Utility seem to be helping.  How can I accomplish this? Thanks.

I have a problem on my early 2011 macbook pro customized with core i5 processor and 500gb hdd regarding BOOTCAMP for Installing Windows 8 on OS 10.9 Mavericks
I tried to install windows 8 with bootcamp on OS X 10.9 Mavericks but while partitioning bootcamp was not responding and then i force quit it. After that i opened disk Utility and it showed no partitions for windows 8.
But then my HDD which had 210GB free later showed as 136.27 Gb free only. IT means that my partition was not successful and it took up 74GB on my HDD.
I dont want to erase my HDD and Reinstall OS X but want a solution to get my 74GB space back on my hdd without troubles of formatting and restoring from backup.
    Plz Help Solution Needed Urgently.

  • Lost 110 GB of disk space after deleting files in target mode... A mystery?

    Dear all,
Yesterday, I used my MBP in Target Disk mode and deleted a directory with approx. 110 GB of files in it. Now I found out that this space is mysteriously gone: the available free space on my hard disk did not increase, and the files are not in the trash or anywhere where I can find them.
I tried Disk Utility doing ‘Verify Disk’ as well as ‘Repair Disk Permissions’, but with no success.
Could any one advice me how I can recover my disk space?
    Thanks in advance....
    /Rudi

    Thanks, Tony.
No, they are not in the trash of the other computer. It would also have taken the computer a while to transfer these files (110 GB takes a while, even over FireFire 800).
The issue is not that I want to recover these files (I have backup copies), I just would like to have my disk space back. It is siting somewhere but 'lost' to the DOS.
    Best, Rudi

  • Reclaim disk space after delete an index

    Hi ,
I have deleted unused indexes from a history table to reclaim the disk space was allocated for these indexes , yet the size on the disk is the same , any steps I can follow to achieve this would be greatly appreciated..
    indexes size is 70 GB
table size is 45 GB , # of rows is above 200 Million
    Thanks in advance

in order to reclaim space after your big delete.  Don't shrink your data files unless you have no other choice.
The space will automatically go back to SQL server. You don't have to do anything.
The database size will be the same plus the growth of your log file due to logging the transactions. However, internally, SQL server knows that it still has that space to play with.
Other wise you can go for  update the statistics and rebuild indexes . but I think it would be the part of your normal weekend nightly maintenance plan

  • Reclaiming disk space after deleting virtual hard drive

Hello forum, I have to temporarily create a 200GB virtual disk and attach to a virtual server. The purpose of the disk is for moving some files across different servers. Once the files have been moved, I would like to delete the disk and release the space back to the datastore. Can this be done? I have a datastore with enough disk space from which the temporary disk will be created. But I would like to release the space back to that datastore once purpose is solved. Any inputs?
    Thanks in advance.

Like already stated above, make sure select the option Remove from virtual machine and delete files from disk when removing the disk from virtual machine. Take in mind that VM must not be running from a snapshot, otherwise only the delta file will be deleted: VMware KB: Removing a harddisk from a virtual machine through the vSphere client does not release the desired space.…

  • HT4818 How do I increase my space on the Windows partition side of my Mac?

Help!  I have installed a Windows partition using Bootcamp.  I need to increase the amount of space for The Windows portion.  Right now it's 20GB.  After I've installed QB 2012 and Norton Anti Virus I am out of room!

  • Not all free disk space available for windows partition in Boot Camp

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp on my MacBook (2009, Mavericks OS, BootCamp Assistant 5.1.2) and unfortunately it has been a huge struggle until now to achieve that. The whole reason for this is that I had Windows XP as the second OS on my MacBook, but I wanted to increase the Windows partition with Disk Utility. Unfortunately this permanently damaged my Windows partition so I couldn't use it anymore.
What I did next? I decided to delete the old Windows XP (which isn't supported anymore by Mavericks) with Disk Utility, which afterwards tells me that I have 1 partition left: The Mac partition.
From there on I wanted to install Windows 7 with the newer Boot Camp. The problem is that in fact Finder tells me that my Macintosh HD has 58,54 Gb free space, so I would like to assign at lease 30 Gb to the to-be Windows partition. However, Boot Camp only gives me the option to assign 20 until 24 Gb, other values I can't assign.
Can anyonetell me why this happens or what could be the problem? I need to have more than 24 Gb available for my Windows as this was the whole reason why I once wanted to increase my old Windows partition, that's where all the problems came from.
I appreciate your help, thank you!
Here is what Disk Utility tells about my partitions:

TTBOMK the only way you can increase the Windows partition is to repartition the drive back to a single partition
    Then reinstall Mountain Lion
    Restore all data from backup
Create new larger partition with Boot Camp
    Install Windows
    Restore data from backup

  • HT201250 recover disk space after backup delete

I intentionally deleted the backup file time machine created, I bought a new larger drive, but my mac doesn't recognioze the available space.  How di I fix this?

You can try reformating it to make sure it is formatted properly. Open Disk Utility and if you can see the drive, reformat it to Mac OS Entended (Journaled). If that doesn't work, please type what brand of drive in your next post.

  • Can't recover disk space after finishing/deleting movies

My ipod touch (8GB) still reports that 2 GB are taken up by videos, even though I don't have any accessible videos on it now. These appear to be the footprints of two movies I rented from itunes. But I finished watching the movies and they don't appear in my itunes rented movie list. When I look under the "videos" tab on my ipod, the two movie titles briefly flash on the screen and then disappear -- so there is no way to select them and attempt to delete them again. I have tried syncing to the itunes library on my Mac (which does not show the movies) but this does not release the space on my ipod. What can I do to recover this 2 GB of lost space on the ipod?

I had the same issue with former rented movies still "appearing" though I had viewed and could no longer access. When I upgraded to 2.0 I ended up restoring to factory defaults and that process removed all the ghost images and freed up the memory. However, I'm noticing that it is occuring again. Has anyone found a way of preventing or correcting without reimaging and restoring?

  • After 10.9.4 upgrade, can't recover free space after deleting files

After upgrading to 10.9.4, I decided to backup about 250 Go of films on an external drive, and then I deleted the originals ones on my MacBook Pro. The files disappear, but the free space stayed the same: more than 250 Go of free space couldn't be recovered !!
I generally use the program "Cocktail" to maintain the mac; but in that case, no solution.
I decided to look for the films on the disk, on temp folders and with Spotlight. And I found them ! In the folder: Volumes/HardiskName/.cleverfiles/hlink.ref/
I deleted them directly in the trash and ... I recovered my 250 Go of free space.

That folder is created by the third-party application "Disk Drill." If you don't like what it does, remove it according to the developer's instructions. "Cocktail" is worthless and should be removed in any case.

  • Reclaim Disk Space After Deleting Versions.

We've recently went through a few large Document Libraries using Power-Shell and deleted tens of thousands of versions of files we didn't need the version history for.
Unfortunately the DB size has not gotten any smaller. I went in to try and shrink the DB however there is very little available space to reclaim.
Is there something else that needs to be done after versions are deleted to fully release the drive space on our SQL box?

Measuring the MDF/LDF isn't going to be a good calculation. For one, you have padding done by SQL Server itself, then you have index space and other metadata storage, and of course you have all of the information that is associated with the BLOB anyhow.
But with 3 versions of the document, again only the differences are stored, so it wouldn't be 600KB * 3 in that case.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/wbaer/archive/2012/11/12/introduction-to-shredded-storage-in-sharepoint-2013.aspx
Also, why are you wanting to shrink the database? Shrinking destroys the indices and generally degrades performance (e.g. if you encounter another data file expansion).

  • Disk space after deleting partition

    Hello
I had partitioned my 500gb HD into two. One was used for osx (~400gb) and another ~60gb for Bootcamp to run windows.
After Yosemite the bootcamp had issues and I decided to erase that partition leaving me with this
The top Macintosh HD says 499 GB and the bottom HD says 400GB
My question is.... Is there a way to have bottom HD combine with the above? does it matter?

    More clarification to the question
My Mac says I have 500GB but the Macintosh HD says I have 400gb (I'm assuming this is because I had partitioned the 500gb into 400/100) But I have since then deleted the 100gb but I can't see it. Where would this be?
