How do I set up a NFS server?

Running 10.5 on macbook. Trying to create NFS server to mount ISO to proprietary UNIX client, AIX 5.2. Looked under SHARING and directory utility. Not finding any documentation which seems to indicate how this is done.
On UNIX, I would start NFS services, add directory to export list with apprpriate permissions (Which client can access it etc) and it would be good to go (assuming name resolution/routing etc). Any insight would be helpful.

You're over my head with your UNIX knowledge, but I wonder if the 10.4.x method still works in 10.5.x?
http://mactechnotes.blogspot.com/2005/09/mac-os-x-as-nfs-server.html
Nope, I guess not, they removed NetInfoManager in 10.5.
Few know as much as this guy about OSX & he has a little utility to do it, but requires 10.6+...

Maybe some clues you haven't seen yet anyway???

  • Problems setting up an NFS server

    Hi everybody,
I just completed my first arch install. :-)
I have a desktop and a laptop, and I installed Arch on the desktop (the laptop runs Ubuntu 9.10). I had a few difficulties here and there, but I now have the system up and running, and I'm very happy.
I have a problem setting up an NFS server. With Ubuntu everything was working, so I'm assuming that the Ubuntu machine (client) is set-up correctly. I'm trying to troubleshoot the arch box (server) now.
I followed this wiki article: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nfs
    Now, I have these problems:
    - when I start the daemons, I get:
    [root@myhost ~]# /etc/rc.d/rpcbind start
    :: Starting rpcbind [FAIL]
    [root@myhost ~]# /etc/rc.d/nfs-common start
    :: Starting rpc.statd daemon [FAIL]
    [root@myhost ~]# /etc/rc.d/nfs-server start
    :: Mounting nfsd filesystem [DONE]
:: Exporting all directories [BUSY] exportfs: /etc/exports [3]: Neither 'subtree_check' or 'no_subtree_check' specified for export "192.168.1.1/24:/home".
    Assuming default behaviour ('no_subtree_check').
NOTE: this default has changed since nfs-utils version 1.0.x
    [DONE]
    :: Starting rpc.nfsd daemon [FAIL]
    - If I mount the share on the client with "sudo mount 192.168.1.20:/home /media/desktop", IT IS mounted but I can't browse it because I have no privileges to access the home directory for the user.
    my /etc/exports looks like this:
    # /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
    # to NFS clients. See exports(5).

Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks, I finally got it working.
I realized that even though both machines had the same group, my Ubuntu machine (client) group has GID 1000, while the Arch one has GID 1001. I created a group that has GID 1001 on the client, and now everything is working.
I'm wondering why my Arch username and group both have 1001 rather than 1000 (which I suppose would be the default number for the first user created).
Anyway, thanks again for your inputs.

  • How to map pathname to unavailable NFS server?

How can you map an automounted pathname to the NFS server which serves it?
If the server is available I just cd to the path and do a df -k.
But this won't work if the server is in trouble and I'm getting:
Jul 20 12:32:55 mymachine last message repeated 77 times
Jul 20 12:37:55 mymachine automountd[1346]: server slowpoke not responding
When this happens all shell execution grinds to a halt because some
path in my $PATH is hitting on 'slowpoke'.
I'd gladly eliminate the troubling path from my $PATH but which
element of $PATH is the culprit?

    Hi.
Not clear for me: You have mounted FS from NFS or no?
If one FS already mounted from NFS server - " df -k " show it.
In case using autmount - you can see it configuration.
NFS server can be on other side of the word, and this servers may be very many, so client should know what NFS server hi want use.

  • How do I set up Azure Sql Server to have multiple instances?

    Hi all;
We are setting up a new SAAS application on Azure and while we have used Azure before, not at this level of multiple apps, etc.
We plan to have both a web app and a cloud app in both a US and EU data center. They need to hit a common database because requests will go to the closest data center via traffic manager and a lot of the data works off of the customer table. And a customer
(company) can have users in both the U.S. and E.U.
Is there a way to set up Azure Sql Server so it has instances in both data centers, and Azure keeps them synchronized? If I understand sharding right, that is not what we need as someone hitting either data center could be requesting any of the data in the
    DB.
    thanks - dave
What we did for the last 6 months -
Made the world's coolest reporting & docgen system even more amazing

    Hi,
As far as I am aware, when you set the webapp/cloudapp to connect to a database you will have to specify the connection string in the app. The app will hit the database which is mentioned in the  connection string you have specified. So it is not automatic
or Traffic manager. You have full control over it as you can tell your app to connect whichever database you want. The database could be located in any region, however the you have to keep latency in mind as the app in US Datacenter could be calling the Database
in EU, if that is  they way it is setup.
You can have separate databases in each region and use Azure Data Sync
to have the database synchronized, however please keep in mind that Azure Data Sync is in Preview.
    Regards,
    Mekh.

  • How do you set up a Testing Server?

My Local and Remote settings have been working fine for years but
now I have the need to set up a Testing Server and I'm not sure
what to enter in the fields when editing my site. Attached are
my settings for Local, Remote and Testing. When I published to
the Testing Server this morning  overwrote the Remote Server
and had to ask fat cow to restore my original site. Please advise.
    Thanks.

Your website is at http://bigcowmusic.com/. You want to use http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/ as your testing server.
Create a folder called testing in your site root.
In the Testing Server category of your site definition, set Host directory to point at the testing folder. Since you left that field blank before, it suggests that leaving it blank points to the site root. So enter "testing/" (without the quotes) into that field.
Set the URL prefix for the testing server to http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/.
To test that it's working, create a file in the testing folder, and make sure that you give it a name that doesn't already exist in your site (this will avoid overwriting a live page if anything goes wrong). Test it within Dreamweaver. Then go to your live site, and see if the page exists in the testing folder. If it is, you're set to go.

  • How do I set up a shared server Oracle 9i

I'm trying to switch from a dedicated server to a shared server. I added mts_dispatchers, mts_servers and mts_max_servers to my configuration file, but got a message saying they have been depricated.
How is this done in 9i?
    Thanks for your time,
    Anthony

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How do I set up the SMTP server on Lion

    Hello
I want to use my OS X Lion server to send mail only (I use Rumpus FTP - which needs a SMTP server so that it can send notification emails)
Is this possible to do with OS X Lion Server?  If so - how?
Server is set up and running nicely, with DNS etc all running.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hello Camelot
    Thank you for your reply.
Is there a way of testing for sure that SMTP is set up and running, using say telnet??
I've turned on mail and entered my server domain name, port 25 into the email settings of my Rumpus client (so that it can send notification emails - it also happens to be running on the same server, so I tried localhost and 127.0.0.1 as well but no sucess.
I have not entered authentication credentials, but turned off authentication using Server Admin.
    Thanks again

  • How do you set up an FTP server using a NAS device?

I'm sure this question has been answered before. I run a small graphic design business from my home. Occassionly clients want to send me files and ask if I have an FTP site they can upload to. I recently purchased an NAS enclosure and added a 250 GB HD in it. It's hook up to a Linksys router. I can attach to it using the GO menu using "smb://STORAGE". It appears on the desktop. I have Comcast as my broadband service with a dynamic DNS. I have 2 folders on it, one password protected and the other a Public folder. I would like someone to be able to access the Public folder and upload and download files on it. Would someone be able to explain, in simple terms, how to set this up.

Well you actually need to have an ftp server running somewhere. I dont know (although i doubt it does) if your NAS has an embedded FTP or SFTP server. If it dosent youll actuall have to have people connect to one of your servers/workstations that has FTP enabled.
First youll need to log in to your router's admin panel and forward port 21 to the server/workstation that will function as the ftp server.
Then set up the mount for the NAS device at large or one of the specific folders on it with sharepoints or something on the mac that will act as the ftp server.
Set up a user as a FTP only user. Youll probably want to make this user only have FTP access (you can google or consult other threads in these forums for this procedure).
In this users home folder make symlinks to the shares with the command line:
    cd pathto_ftpusers_homedir
    ln -s /Volumes/NAS_Sharepoint NameOfFolderUserWillSee
Then create the file /etc/ftpchroot which will contain a list of users that will be limited to thier home directory when using ftp. i would use a command line text editor to do this (pico, vi, emacs... choose your poison).
the file should simply be a list of user shortnames, 1 per line.
Thats the basics of it. You can get more complicated and might indeed need to set up permissions and what not properly (youll probably want to use ACLS so you dont have to constantly change permissions or login as another user to access files that have been uploaded)but that should get you started i think.

  • How would I set up an FTP server in Mountain Lion Server?

I need to make a server, which would serve the same function that the FTP file-sharing option did before Lion. Plus whatever goodies of superior access control etc there may be; but mainly providing files for downloading and uploading.
(I don't want to be rude, but I've seen some previous discussion here, and I might save time by mentioning:
I do not need information on how bad FTP is.
I do not need a list of superior technologies.
I do have a problem invoving client systems that are not able to exchange files with my system by other means than ancient terrible FTP -- not even any practical form of sneakernet.)
Can anyone describe the process or give a link to something that does? Shell commands are fine. Well, sort of awful, but good enough.

Personally I use CrushFTP ... it works well, was reasonably price, and has a very extensive interface giving me all the control that I want.

  • How do I set up a proxy server for webmail services to assist in migrating from NMS 4.15p6 on NT to iMS 5.1 on HP-UX.

I want to have minimal if no downtime at all when moving the message store. iPlanet support hinted at an "unsupported" proxy server solution, and would give no further information. I am running the MMP with 5.1 and that supports IMAP and POP migration, but I need support for webmail services as well to complete the migration from NT to UNIX with minimal distruption of thousands of users. I am using the MoveUser utility to move the message store in hopes that will clear up some store corruption we have been seeing.

To get this in a 'supported' fashion you might want to wait until the iMS 5.2 release. iPlanet has said this release would include a webmail proxy/mmp server to do exactly what you desire.
A proxy server would not be a solution to your problem as it would have to have access and knowledge to the users mailhost attribute to determine to which host to route the webmail connection. The webmail proxy/mmp will have this functionality.
You might want to contact your iPlanet rep about this product and maybe you could get a copy of it as part of a beta program. I know iPlanet is always looking for oppourtunities for feedback like this.
