How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?
How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?
Hi,
Open the Messages app.
Go to the Preferences item in the app's Menu.
Select the account pane in the Preferences.
Each active account should have a tick in the Enable this Account box.
This can be unticked.
This will stop accounts logging in but will not stop the app Launching in certain circumstances.
First of all check the app is Quit before shutting down the computer.
The fact the app is open even if all windows are hidden can cause the app to restart when you Start up the computer.
Messages is a Multiple window app and using the red button on the top left of a window only closes that window and does not Quit the app.
Also check the System Preferences > Users and Groups > your account > Login Items tab.
This will list items that are set to Start up when the computer does.
I have a couple of External Drive on other computers, some Anti Virus software and the common iTunes Helper plus an old version of TextExpander that will work if I launch the Preference Pane this way.

How can I turn off messages on iPad while students are at school
Is there any great way to turn off messages on the ipad without shutting down the ports required to connect to Apple on the firewall? Kids will be kids but teachers are pressing administration for solution. If you shut off messages, I may be mistaken but you can't restrict the kid from turning it back on correct?
If you own/control the iPads that run iOS 6, you can turn off Messages via Apple Configurator or an MDM solution and the students would, to the best of my knowledge, not be able to turn that back on without knowing the Restrictions passcode. For personally owned iPads, the only way to block Messages would be to block the ports at your router. Messages uses port 5222, so if you block that port, that should block the transmission of messages, though the students will still try. For more information on ports, see:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245
Of course if the student has a cell connection on a personally-owned device, there won't be any way you can block the sending of messages at all.

How can I turn off messages for certain Action Center items?
I'd like to find a way to turn off messages for Windows Update, Network Firewall and Windows Backup. Ideally I'd like to do it with Group Policy however I can't find a policy for this. We're deploying Windows 7 right now and we'll need a solution that's domain-wide.Orange County District Attorney

How can I turn off that Maveriks at iMac is scanning continuously for new devices?
Hi, I have a iMac (early 2008) updatet to 10.9 Maveriks with Bluetooth mouse, mousepad en keyboard. I listen at home to music with a Onkyo TX-NR626 A/V receiver (with Bluetooth) via my iMac, iPad and android device.
When I startup or wake up my iMac, Maveriks is always staring to scan for new Bluetooth devices?!. Than every time, my receiver (also when the receiver is turned off) is turning on and change to Bluetooth mode.
I can't turn off the Bluetooth function at my Onkyo TX-NR626 A/V receiver. With Mountain Lion, I didn't had this problems.
I want to turn of the continuously scanning procedure after startup or wake up on my iMac.
My question is:
How can I turn off that Maveriks is scanning continuously for new devices?
How can I turn off the detection mode of my iMac?Kinda funny... I found this article while searching for an answer to my question:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
At the very end of the article, it mentions the "bug" that only one app on Windows can play direct sound at a time. That's exactly the "feature" I'm looking for on the Mac. Funny how one person's bug is another's feature. -
How do i turn off messages with the new mountain lion os?
My husband and I share an Apple ID. When I use the iMessages on my MacBook it send them to both of our iPhones. How can I turn this off on my computer?
While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion

How do I turn off sharing? My iMac is listed 8 times/
Hi
This just started recently. my iMac is listed 8 times under sharing in the finder. I don't know what happened but it's starting to cause problems.
The only things that have changed recently is I upgraded to Yosemite but that was working fine. I just bought a new iPad but that connects through iTunes. I never clicked to share anything.
At home here we have 6 computers. 1 PC is my son's, one PC Laptop is my wife's. Both of those are only connected to WiFi for the internet. In my office I have my main iMac for internet and daily work, my Mac Pro which I only boot when I'm doing video work, my Mac Book Pro which I use rarely now that I don't shoot video in the field and 1 old HP. These are all connect to my network Hard Wired to my Airport Extreme plus a wireless Canon Printer. When any or all of these in my office are up and running I see them in the Finder (NOT under Sharing) and I can swap files between them.
Here's a screen-shot of my finder window.
I have to get rid of all those duplicate "ghost" version of my iMac.
Thanks for your help.
AllenGOT IT FIXED! WOW!
I did better than filing a bug report. I went to Apple support, chose chat support. When it wanted $15 or was it $19 I filed an exemption which was a choice on the page, based on the fact that I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Got the chat fellow and here we go!!!! ;-) First off he sent me this app so he could see my screen. Then he had me do a few things like move the system configuration folder to the desktop and repair permissions. Then he had me reset the SMC and Pram. Nothing helped, all the ghost computers still showed in the finder.
As a last resort he had me reset my Apple Airport Extreme. Wala! Ghost Computers GONE! He said it was a combination of stuff but mainly it was the airport extreme when I installed Yosemite. Something to do with my network. We'll see if it holds or if the problem comes back but as of now there's no more ghost computers in the sharing part of the finder.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions. I hope maybe this helps someone else.

It was working fine for the first 4 days until now, the computer won't turn off, won't restart, and won't sleep. When click on those button, the computer has no response. Also the iMessage App appears to not working as well. I tried forced turn off by holding the power button, but then it takes about 1 to turn back on. And now after it is on ago, it won't turn off again. And the Imssage is not working again. Other apps seems works just fine. Any suggestion?
Hi, Kinshinhh.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend processing an SMC reset on your MacBook Pro.

How can I turn off message sound at night?
I have turned on notification sounds for arriving Mail messages using Rules.
This works fine, except that I would like to silence it at night since the sounds actually
interrupt my sleep.
I can do this on my Google smartphone. Why can't I find a way to silence the notifications
at some clock interval?
I have looked in the Sound panel of System Preferences too, but haven't found a way to declare a silent period..
Anyone know how to do this?I neglected to make it clear in my original post that this problem occurs on an iMac running MacOS 10.7.5.
I saw similar threads referring to the iPhone, but this is a MacOS question.. -
How do I turn off message sound when I'm on a phone call
I am going to go deaf if I don't put my phone on silent before taking a phone call, for fear of receiving a text message!!! How do I stop this?
This is only a work around and not a solution to the problem. Apple needs to add an option to be notified during the call or play another, lower and softer, tone while a call is in progress. With a mailbox that blows up all day long and a phone I live on, mind you with a headset in my ear, this is a horrible problem for me. A simple change in the sound profile for this would make me happy. When will we see this? Maybe when IOS 9 since apple is always behind the curve when it comes to enhancements.

How do i turn off imessage on my iMac?
I am getting iMessages on my computer, I don't want to get them on my computer, I want them on my iPhone
Hi bnichols75,
A quick question about that - I had discovered that same process you described above, BUT in my scenario (I have 3 iMacs, and one of the is at our Business and we don't want our employees reading our imessages, but want them to benefit from the syncing of all the other things like Calendar, Emails etc, which we have been doing for the last 3 years). My question is: Will signing out of icloud (from within preferences in imessage) aside from simply "unselecting enable", then sign me out of all icloud features? Or will it simply just deactivate imessage because it's being done from within the Preferences inside of iMessage? I want to make sure that doing the "sign out of iCloud", (from within the imessage application) that it wont sign the entire imac out of iCloud because we still want our business imac to have access to all the other cloud features, like the apps, calendar, email etc. Just NOT the iMessages.
Sorry, I bet this is written more confusingly than it needed to be, but hope you understand what I'm asking. Thanks in advance! -
Some mail messages not showing content after upgrade to Yosemite
I have just upgraded my system software to Yosemite and Have found that some of my mail messages are not displaying their content. I have closed and re-opened Mail and also taken all mailboxes offline and back online but the problem still persists.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?Hi Illaass,
I've already rebuilt the mailbox several times. I have run disk utility, started my masc in 'safe mode', reset the PRAM and finally re-installed Yosemite again. This didn't solve the problem. I started my mac in 'safe mode' one more time today and than restarted my mac and the problem appears to have been sorted. However, I'm not sure if the problem will re-occur if I shut down my mac tonight and restart in the morning1
