How do I view downloaded public library audiobooks in WMA form on my 4th generation ipod?

I am able to transfer files using Overdrive.  Overdirve says there are ipod permissions for using these WMA files on the ipod.  The files transfer.  They function (when the ipod is docked to the computer and they play through the computer).  My problem is that I can't see the files on the ipod itself.  Therefore, I can't play them on the ipod when it is not docked to the computer.  I have looked through a lot of support areas and find nothing that addresses my problem.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.

I tried the transfer process all over again to see if I can better answer your questions.  This time I used a "Welcome to Overdrive Media WMA" audiobook file.  It is not a protected file, so I thought that would eliminate one problem.  I have Overdrive Media Console software installed.  What the Overdrive Media Console does is directly transfer the files of the borrowed library audiobook into the ipod.  It does not use itunes at all.  In fact, if itunes is open, it asks that you close it.  If I use the Advance button during the transfer process, I can choose where in the ipod I want to place the file.  Once the file(s) is/are in the ipod, it asks you to disconnect the ipod and enjoy reading the book!  Now, when I try to find the files on the ipod, once it's disconnected, I cannot locate them.  When the ipod is connected to my computer, I can navigate through the folders on the ipod and locate the file(s).  I can even play the file(s) through my computer.  There are files I can see when viewing the ipod as a disk drive that are not available when navigating through the ipod when it is disconnectied.  For example, there is a folder called "Recordings" that I can see through Windows Explorer on the computers, but it is nowhere to be found when scrolling through the ipod when it is working independently.  Conversely, there is an "Audiobook" folder on the ipod that does not show when I view it as a disk drive on the computer.  Why is that?
Having established that I could bring in the file through Overdrive Media Console, I next tried bringing the same file into my ipod using itunes.  This time when it asked to convert, it was allowed to convert the file.  I found it in the music.  I selected and right clicked it.  then I selected "Get info".  I changed the Media Kind to Audiobook.  Now I have a Book tab when I select my device.  The Welcome to Overdrive file is my one audiobook and I can locate it in the Audiobook folder under the Music folder.  Terrific!
The remaining problem is to get library audiobooks that are marked as permitted to be put on my ipod to actually go there, using either itunes or Overdrive Media Console.  I really don't care which method I use, as long as it works.  Since I now have established a place for audiobooks to go, perhaps it would work, but my book loan expired today, so I have to borrow another book and try again.  This may take a day or two for the loan to come through.  At least that was how my first experience went in receiving a library audiobook.  This time I will look more closely to see if somehow I can download the files from the library site to my ipod without first saving them into my computer.  It may or may not be a choice.
Does any of this make any sense to you or give you any other ideas for suggestions?  I am grateful to you for having this discussion with me.  I was able to get some ideas from you and from your suggestions to try a few more things.  I feel I have made some progress in understanding what it happening with audiobooks and my ipod.  Now I need to be a better understanding of how this library system can work with the ipod.  Thank you so much.

  • After the latest upgrade, I can't transfer my library audiobook cd's from my computer to my iPod so I can listen to the book. The book shows up on my computer, but not on my iPod.

After the last upgrade, I can't transfer my library audiobook cd's from my computer to my iPod so that I can listen to the book. It seems to be transferring but
doesn't show up on my iPod. How do I find the transferred files on my iPod Classic 60GB? Help! I've done this thousands of times before, and this is the 1st
time I've had a problem, so I'm suspecting the upgrade.

For non-purchased music like CD ripped songs, you need some third party software like sharepod, yamipod or iPod file manager to copy them from iPod back to computer. if you need details, here is a guide about how to copy iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

Sounds like you mean that the iPod is not appearing in iTunes on yuor computer. If so then:
If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

  • I am trying to reset my 4th generation ipod touch via itunes (as I cannot remember parental controls code). In itunes it does a download but then says the software was corrupted during download. Itunes is up to date. Operating system is vista. Any ideas?

I have given my 4th generation ipod touch to my husband and he wants to download some in app purchases, so I am trying to reset it via itunes. I dont remember setting parental controls but I must have at some point, maybe when I lent it to the kids. But I cannot remember the password and nothing I have tried works. So I have backed the ipod up and am trying to reset it but after speding 10 minutes doing a download I get a message that says:
"The softwaar for the iPod was corrupted during download. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later"
I have tried many times. All the settings are correct, and the network seems to be working fine in all respects.
    Any advice very much appreciated.
    Thank you
UPDATE - decided to try one more time after trying for hours and it has worked! I now suspect it may have been because my son was playing an online game. Though we have plenty of bandwidth. But in case, I guess it could be a bandwidth problem.

A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (or if you forgot your passcode)
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
If you need to restore your device or if you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to
             update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • I have a 4th generation iPod touch which was working perfectly until I downloaded ios5 and now it won't connect to my wi-fi - all other devices working correctly. Where can I download ios 4.3.5 from?

I have a 4th generation iPod touch which was working perfectly until I downloaded ios5 and now it won't connect to my wi-fi - all other devices working correctly. My pc didn't create a backup before updating software so I can't revert back to ios 4.3.5 from there, where can I download ios 4.3.5 from?

I tried just about everything and finally brought my Ipod touch to the apple store.  The tech installed ios 4.3.5 but still no WIFI.  He recommended a $149 exchange - not really a bad deal with a new battery and 90 day warranty, but I thought I'd try again.
The "solution" was bizarre.  On YouTube was a fix involving taking the motherboard out and heating the wifi components with a heat gun.
I did not like that idea, but another involved turning it off, putting it in the freezer for five minutes and restarting.  It worked!  I must admit the fix does not work reliably, so I may still go for the exchange.  Still, I am now convinced that it is a hardware problem.    i remember back in the old days, TV repairmen sprayed a suspected bad resistor with Freon.  The chilled component would work long enough to identify what needed replacement.  Perhaps something similar is happening here.
For anyone wanting to try this, I found it more convenient to place the back of my ipod on a  frozen cold pack until the wifi is restored.  It seems to happen when condensation forms on the face.  I used a towel to wipe off the moisture so as not to add to the problem.

i have model a1367, 8gb, 4th generation ipod touch.  how do I update it from ios 4.2.1 to 6 or more?

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware, which is iOS 6.1.6 for a fourth generation iPod touch.
