How Do You Securely Wipe All Info Off Internal Hard Drive?

A friend has to ship her new iMac back to Apple for a replacement -- long story.
But before she ships it off she wants to wipe the internal hard drive of all her personal info -- mail, photos, music, documents, ...
What's the best way to securely wipe that internal drive?

you can do it using the erase tab in disk utility. there is an option to erase securely. it writes zeros over everything on the drive. do just one zero erase pass. disk utility lets you choose multiple erase passes but that's a vast overkill.
to do it to an internal drive boot from the snow leopard dvd and use disk utility there to erase the drive. when done restart and hold option at the chime. this will boot you into startup disk manager. eject the isntall dvd there and shut down.

!0.5.8 How do I copy the 'system' form one internal Hard drive to an other (BY CD Packed up)  I have tried but it will no show 'live' system folder - do and how can I bless it ? Thank you

Carbon Copy Cloner will allow you to de-select directory trees, so you could use it to copy over everything EXCEPT the /Users directory tree.
Mac OS X is NOT just the System Folder.  If you do not copy over the rest of Mac OS X, it will not boot.  So better to exclude Users and take everything else, then it is to try and pick and choose.
The other approach is to install a New Mac OS X, and then copy over the stuff you want from the home folder(s) and reinstall any apps you want.

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • How do I set Catalogue to new larger internal hard drive and then delete the files from the smaller

I have just had a new 1TB internal hard drive installed in my PC and then the original smaller internal 500GB hard drive cloned onto it. The new 1TB is now Local Dick C and the smaller 500GB has been changed from C and is now Local Disk F. PSE11 is running from the new C and all my pictures are on both C and F but the catalogue is pointing to F. I want to delete all of the old files on F to free up space since they are all cloned to the new 1TB C, so I want the PSE11 catalogue to point only to the pictures on C. I have tried creating a new Catalogue and importing my pictures from C. The images come in and look connected to C but, when I close PSE11 and then reopen that new catalogue, the image path reads F, as does the original catalogue. So, now I have two catalogues apparently point to F but I want to: 1) have only one catalogue pointing to C; 2) the delete catalogues pointing to F; 3) then reformat F: so I have a clean 500GB old hard drive for future expansion. Can some please help?

Grant, all I can say is that another user was having almost identical issues a month or so ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the discussion thread now but my feeling is that it never resolved satisfactorily while both drives were connected.
To save you a lot of work formatting, copying, erasing and so forth why not just unplug the SATA cable from the old drive and see if the Organizer then starts behaving nicely with the new drive. If it does then you can go the destructive route on the old drive.
Hopefully the poster who had the similar problem might read this and update us on his/her situation - if it got resolved and how.

  • How to undo the file sharing in your internal hard drive in Macbook?

I thought the way to lock and unlock a file would also be the same procedure when locking the internal hard drive?
Basically what happened is that I have an icon on my desktop (top-right corner) where I can access my applications, home, etc.
I thought I could privitize my whole entire system if I just change the file sharing into "Read Only (Drop Box)" status.
So I right-click on the icon, then clicked "Get Info," then clicked the lock button then it asked me for my password to be able to make changes.
My fault was I made the "Home" and "Admin" to "Read Only (Drop Box) status and "Other Users" to "No Access" file sharing.
Now in result I cannot click on anything. All the applications are lock. Even the System Preferences.
Another problem I came across is that I tried to turn my MacBook on...and it would just stay on the white screen with the apple logo and it would just load for ever.
So overall, my whole entire mac system is locked, can't open anything and I cannot turn on my Mac.
I tried calling the Apple call support services. But my warranty has expired. I could pay for it, but I really do want to save.
I hope someone can tell me a good solution. Next time I'll make sure not to do experiments anymore and stick to what I know.

You need to do it as soon as you turn the computer back on. If you have a firmware password set on the computer, you'll need to know it and have a Mac OS X install DVD; if you don't have either and a firmware password is set, contact Apple.

  • How to move an iTunes library from the internal hard drive to another bootable disk.

I got two Mac OS X installations on my i Mac system. One on the internal hard drive (320 Gb), that has been there since the iMac was bought 3 years ago, upgraded to Lion on 2 August. (call that INT) . I have a USB external drive, and recently bought a firewire Lacie external drive (2Tb), so to boot from there when I can, with hard drive space getting tight this year. I successfully installed another copy of Lion on LACIE.
Then I went to work to transfer my iTunes library, which the media files were optioned to store on the USB drive. Intending to transfer both the music and video files, and the megadata ( playlists, ratings, playcounts ) I found the media files and the iTunes library file and the .xml document in my iTunes folder from INT. I made a new folder in the USB drive, and copied the contents from the old iTunes folder to that new folder. I re-started in LACIE, and found my empty iTunes folder. I copied over to the new iTunes folder, then opened iTunes. My eyes saw the music library to the same number of items, with the playlists etc showing.
However, I tried to sync an iPod Nano, and a window came up saying 100 songs could not be copied to the iPod because they could not be found. After ejecting the iPod I tried to play a song from iTunes, and the screen filled with exclamation points. A small window came up, asking for a password to open "sparsebundle" and my name. I entered my password for the administrator's log-in and it said try again with the password. Without knowing what password to put in, I clicked Cancel, and got another small window asking to locate the file. Then clicked Cancel again, not knowing where to search. All the media folders were showing after quitting iTunes and opening Finder .
I re-booted into INT, and opened iTunes. The library was still there. I synced my iPod again, ejected it, played 3 songs on the iPod, synced again, ejected it again, and opened the playlist "Recently Played". It showed up okay with no problems. So my iTunes library in INT is alright.
Has anyone got any idea how to make the transfer into LACIE and get it running alright, or what went wrong with what I did ?
In the meantime I will empty my LACIE iTunes library folder's contents to the trash, and securily empty the trash .

Solved the issue without using the trash . I tried to consolidate the library in LACIE, then clicked on any exclamation-mark song and tried to locate the file. Repeating those steps 3 or 4 times cleared it up. That was confirmed when I synced the entire library on a iPod Classic, and showed up no problems after syncing the Nano.
What went wrong was perhaps to fail to consolidate the library at first .

  • How to move your library files from one internal hard drive to another

I have two internal hard drives on my computer, one 500GB SSD for games and other programs that require fast access, and one 2TB for more bulky items, like videos, music and back ups.
The problem is that my SSD is pretty much full because my iTunes library location defaults to the "my music" folder which is located on the SSD, I would like to move the location of the iTunes library files to my 2TB hard drive in order to free up some space on my SSD (about 100GB).
I have tried to set the destination of the library via the preferences in the extras tab but that just seems to copy the files rather than move them, so it still needs them on my solid state in order to play them.
Please if there is a solution to this problem could you tell me
    Cheers

    Close iTunes.
Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the current drive to it's new location.
    While holding SHIFT launch iTunes.
Continue holding until iTunes prompts to create a new library or locate an existing library.
Select the option to locate and point iTunes to the new location of the iTunes folder.

  • How do I convert the data on my internal hard drive to a new PC?

My Macbook died but I have the internal hard drive taken out. How do I get that data onto my new PC?

Use an USB enclosure for the drive's type; any large-enough computer store should carry these.

  • How do I securely wipe all data on an iMac before it iOS given away?

As part of an estate, I need to securely wipe an iMac before it is given to the heirs.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) To securely erase the drive,
click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do you get iMovie to save to another hard drive?

I am trying out the new Imovie and can not figure out how to change Imovie from saving to my SSD/boot drive. I want it to save to my other hard drive. I used the "old" Imove and it was fairly simple. Can this be done?

Yes, just go to File>Open Library>New and create a new library on your other hard drive. Then copy all events and projects to that new Library. This will move them to the other hard drive. You can then close the library on your boot drive. Quit iMovie and delete that library and in future only use the one on the other drive.

  • How do you get Windows 7 to recognise AE Hard drive?

I don't know how to use Windows 7, can anyone tell me how to get the hard drive recognised on it?
    Thank you =)

    yes, worked fine under WinXP.
now i am able to access the TC using the AirPort Utility app, that's some progress.
but still unable to map to it with File Explorer (had it mapped as Z when running WinXP)
this is my first time with Win7 ... here's what i'm doing to map
    open file explorer
    select map network drive
    drive = "z"
    folder = "\\<NAME OF TC>
    select 'connect using different credentials'
    select Use Another Account
it then prompts for User Name and Password
... i input the TC name for User Name and the password ... error message that windows cannot access the device
i had not problems setting it up in winxp, but that was a long time ago and it was all saved in local memory, i'm sure i'm missing something obvious, but can't see where i'm going wrong
    thanks!

  • How Do You "Move" Items/Applications from the Mac Hard Drive?

    Hi,
As the subject line suggests I need to "move" things from my regular Mac Hard Drive to the additional Hard Drive I installed. My normal (forgive my lack of technical talk) hard drive is almost full. I would like to move things like iTunes, iPhoto etc to my new hard drive (1TB) so that I can free up space on my current more regularly used hard drive. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Ali

There's various approaches you can take. Personally I would try to leave applications and the system on the main drive and just move data files to another drive. Some applications really want to be run from the main drive and will become cranky if you put them elsewhere because things aren't where they expect them to be.
Moving files is often just a matter of dragging them to the new place. Note that if this new place is another drive the files get copied and you will have to delete the originals from the original drive once you are done copying.
Applications can have a complex structure with bits and pieces of files all over the place, some may be invisible. While these can be copied, as I said before it is often best to leave them on the main drive.
Just for your information, you posted your software question in the Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Power Mac G5 > Power Mac G5 (tower) hardware questions area. Your computer information says you are running a Mac Pro and Snow Leopard (which won't run on a G5). It doesn't really matter in this case but if you have a platform specific question in future, for fastest response you might want to make sure it gets into the correct forum.

  • HT5664 how do you copy the iPhoto library to the hard drive

I copied some photos onto a DVD and my new iMac won't let me download them into iPhoto.  I don't understand the instructions to download the iPhoto library into the hard drive.  How do I do that?  What do I do once that part is downloaded?

    1. Drag it.
    2. If you're moving loose files, open iPhoto and import or drag them into it. If you're moving an iPhoto library, double-click it.

  • How do you copy your iphoto library to ext. hard drive?

I am sorry to ask this lame question, but: How do you copy your iPhoto library to an external hard drive, just to back it up? I'm confused, because of three things: a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library; b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years, AND c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is, what it does, etc.
So, I apologize, but if someone can help me figure what I would like to think should be a very simple backup, I would be grateful. Thank you very much.

I am sorry to ask this lame question, but: How do you copy your iPhoto library to an external hard drive, just to back it up?
Drag it to the external drive
    a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library;
There not one - you change the path by launching iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and using the select library option to repoint to a different libary - however you would not do this to a backup library - it would just be a copy
    b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years,
This is probably an unused older library - a backup for a previous version
    c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is,
That probably is your iPhoto library and it is probably not a file but a Unix style "package"
Launch iPhoto and in events view select a photo and right click (control click) on it and select the show file option to see the path to the currently active library - I find the column view the easiest to see the path
