How I got my MBP heat issue resolved...

Like many MBP users, I too was having heat related issues. I decided to change a few things to see if they actually worked.
1. When I don't need the full power of the processors, I change my power source in the battery menu to "Better Energy Savings".
2. I don't run as many dashboard apps and when I find one, I make sure it is an Intel native binary.
3. I updated the SMC firmware on my Mac.
All three of these chanages have dramatically changed how my MacBook Pro works. I can now place it on my lap without any issue whatsoever.
I hope this works for you too.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thats a great idea,
why do purchased the MPB, if you reduce the power rating?
Under this conditions the MPB is now slower as the good old one.

  • More mbp heat issues.

    hi,
I recently (about a week or two ago) got a 15" mbp 2.4 Intel version and it seems to run a bit hot. weather this is something to worry about or just paranoia I don't know. I installed istat pro and fan control and when im running off the battery the temp seems to run around 30/40 celsius with the fans ranging from around 2000/2200 rpm. When its running off the power cable it seems to get hotter right now with safari open and streaming a video my cpu is at 57 and my fans around 3000. The hottest is the gpu dioed that is at 66. Also where the lead is plugged in its gets a bit hot around that area. Basically what i would like to know is if this is normal or should i get it looked at?
    thanks

All perfectly normal, although I'm surprised the fans are running so fast; my CPU is currently running at 68° and GPU at 57° and the fans are idling at 1000rpm. The left hand side of the machine will get hotter than the right, and the hottest point of the case will normally be near the screen hinge just above the F1/F2/F3 keys.

  • Have any heat issues been fixed in the new MBPs

I'm interseted in buying a new MBP. Does anyone know if any of the heat issues been fixed in the latest MBPs? And are the GPU's still underclocked?

Nicolas, I've got a week 12 MBP and have never considered it to have a heat problem.
Just made another 15 minute run of System Load with both CPUs at 100%. The CPU temp momentarily hit 78 C, then the fans kicked in (quietly) and the temperature stabilized at 73 C.
The current CPU temperature is 51 C, which is normal for routine writing, Web browsing and downloading to my database. When I'm doing database work that frequently but for only brief bursts pegs the CPUs, the temps run in the high 50s to low 60s C. On battery power, the temps drop several degrees C.
The computer remains comfortable to use at all times. Note: I use it on an aluminum tilt stand, whether on my desk or in my lap.
Haven't done the "grease fix" and don't plan to.

Are you saying you're running Windows in BootCamp or Windows as a Virtual Machine? You can increase the fan speed on the Mac using smcFanControl and use the software OGELTHORPE recommended to observe improvements.
smcFanControl is a Mac application and doesn't work in Windows, but if you set a higher minimum fan speed (which is how smcFanControl works) while running OS X, when you reboot into a BootCamp partition, that minimum speed tends to be carried over.

That listed 7 hours is with very limited use. Low screen brightness, low keyboard backlight, No WiFi or bluetooth.
Most I have ever gotten from my 15" 2011 model is around 5-6 hours and that was with very light use. Just Web, Chrome, and email, thunderbird, and Wifi.

  • Grey screen while in use, heat issue?? Already re-installed everything but problem keeps happening after a few hours in use, how to fix?

  • Anyone have heat issues on 2011 MBP, WITHOUT the CPU being used at 100% ?

I hear many people having heat issues with the 2011 MacBook pro. All have mentioned some process using 100% of CPU. I wonder if anyone has heat problems even though the CPU is not being used at 100%. This would shed some light as to whether the problem is related to software or hardware.

Mine too. Get a inferno hot, and i cant use Firefox anymore, because the fans stars in less than one minute.
Everything started after the instalation of the OS X LION.

Also please consider increasing volumel level, it's low at full volume also compated to other phones.

    Lot of issues.
    1. Heating issues while charging, while talking, while browsing. Got a 9 mb update 2 day. Let's see what all does get resolved.
    2. Still no update to resolve the issue regarding how to transfer apps to external sd card
    3. Some times mobile data doesn't get turned on when switching between networks even though the network signal is good. Have to switch off and switch on the phone.
    4. Unable to install other apps after installing asphalt 8 even though space is 600 mb under phone memory.
    Will keep updating abt issues.
Have been using this phone for the last 20 days.

  • How hot it YOUR MBP?

I know it's all subjective, but here is a way that I'd like to get to the bottom of the heat issue once and for all. I'd like everyone to post how long in minutes, seconds, etc. they can keep their IDLE MBP (i.e. no apps running, just the bare OS) on their pants-covered lap, before they have to move it for fear of getting burned. I'm getting my MBP tomorrow and I'll try the test myself then. Please post your results - I'm very curious.

About 10-minutes although its best to set your MBP on a more stable surface when available. I’m no different than several users and I occasionally use my “portable’ on my lap in the airport boarding area, etc. All of my previous “portables” from Sony, Toshiba and IBM got too hot for comfort so I always sought to find a small table or counter somewhere. In any event, good luck with your new MBP and test results. Please mark this response as helpful, etc, if it applies.

  • April 2010 MacBook Pro Heat issues.

My first post and first Mac, so please be patient....
MCP 15" HiRes glossy, Intel i7, 500G 7200rpm HD, (you know the rest)
I had bought my MBP in late April, the machine is great had no issues at all outperformed any comparable machine I put it up against. After having it a couple weeks I decided to push the video card a bit to see how it handled gaming. I reopened my World of Warcraft account and noticed a great deal of heat being put off by the machine(too hot to touch above function keys). For days I read forums on both Apple and World of Warcraft to see if the heat output is normal or not.
Things unclear to me are what exactly is Apple, Nvidia, and Intel claiming to be normal operating heat levels? (Exact temps please, I monitor using istat)I am running World of Warcraft between 160 F and 170 F and occasionally in the 180's with the frame rate dummied down to 30 fps and some other settings reduced. I should not have to do that. Its used on a flat surface, no obstructions. I refuse to buy an extended warranty for a built in system killer such as heat(would rather return and pay less). Did a hardware test everything passed. Fans running normal between 2000 and 3000rpms during use. Like I said in the first sentence this is my first Mac and think this is a little too hot in my opinion, but I am no expert so if i am wrong please tell me. I love the notebook but am worried about the heat, and cannot afford to shell out another $2200 in a year or two for a notebook that over time failed from heat issues.
I am coming from an HP ZD8000 with a 256mgb ATI video card that had only gotten a little bit luke warm at maximum settings and 60 fps in World of Warcraft, but that desktop replacement had 4 fans.
Should I have Genius bar do a GPU test? or is this heat acceptable?

    Nate, welcome to Apple Discussions!
In short, your temperatures are perfectly normal. In fact, they're a bit on the cool side. I assume you're reporting the CPU diode ("CPU") temperature using iStat? If so, the temps are completely and perfectly normal.
170ºF is only 76ºC. The CPU is rated up to 105ºC (221ºF). If you've got the fans speeding up at that temperature then it is running perfectly normally. You've got a lot more room there before anything ever becomes damaged. And, rest assured, if the temperatures ever climbed to a point where damage is possible (I've never heard of that and I've been on these MBP forums for 2 years) then the machine will automatically shut itself off. There is no way that you could do damage to it with heat.
Like I said in the first sentence this is my first Mac and think this is a little too hot in my opinion, but I am no expert so if i am wrong please tell me.
You're wrong. It's perfectly normal. You don't need to be worried. They're designed to run warm under heavy load. People use these things for rendering and encoding video all day long. Yours will be just fine if you play Warcraft on it once in a while. Bump up the settings a bit too; I don't see why that would generate any more or less heat.
I am coming from an HP ZD8000 with a 256mgb ATI video card that had only gotten a little bit luke warm at maximum settings and 60 fps in World of Warcraft, but that desktop replacement had 4 fans.
Well, that's the problem. That thing was plastic, correct? And probably 2" thick? With huge fan vents on the back? The MBP is exactly the opposite of that. Metal conducts heat much better, and helps to cool the computer too. However, you also feel the heat more. The MBP is half the thickness of that thing, and doesn't have the vents either or the huge fans. All it means is it will heat up a bit more, but it's been designed just fine with that heat in mind.

  • IQ826t Restart and Heating Issue

One thing I definitely do not like the HP's support especially when they will not allow us to buy a 7 Upgrade from Vista nor will they support something (even when I find their glitches and they admit after telling me it was just the OS).. On Repair work, I had to ship it out and this will be my 2-3 time to do repair on this PC in the past 3 years (and I have to wait a week for the repair to be done...)
    Besides that, IQ826t, Win 7 Ultimate SP1
All Drivers are up to date with HP website (utilizing Win 7 64 bit drivers and Firmware is up to date). AVG update/scan (no issue - confirmed even rootkit).. Malwarebyte - Scan and no issue
Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmentation done on a monthly and quarterly schedule
    Biggest Issue:
I am getting a crash with Win 7 0x124 Stop Error Message (happens periodically and even after a reboot)
Never had this issue until May and the upgrade to Win 7 was done last year with SP1 update done on March (so it is not an issue with the OS as HP support personnel seems to think... I proved them the issue with Windows Update History, The  Bluescreen error code on my error code reader)..  This machine under warranty and I had issues with it constant (even in Vista)
They state that it is the OS.. Again, if that was the case, I would think it would happen right away like my Toshiba on SP1 upgrade... That was not the case in the matter.  I have a firmware reset (default settings) and the issue persist..
The Error Code relates always HAL.dll or ntoskrnl.exe
One if hardware compatiblity and the other is an OS kernel exe file.. And this usually checking knowledge base relates to hardware failing due to 1) Compatibility (which HP website confirms is not the case) 2) OS corruption (which is not the case checking on safe mode and this happening STILL 3) Heat Issue (which I believe is the issue and was been documented on the Internet
What I am noticing is the unit is extremely HOT (vent is almost burning when it has been off and just turned on).. I wonder if the hardware pieces are literally melting to destruction since I can't just open it up (they state it will void my warranty)
The Symptoms before the Crash (happens any time.. Even right after a power up)
If you are playing audio or video, you will start to hear jitters and sound seems to echo itself .. Video would start to lag and become choppy..  Systems start to slow down and things seem to run very slow.. I have seen the power light on the PC start on but the touchscreen just go black (will not restart sometimes)..
Minor Issues (but could be related)
    1) When running PC Hardware Diagnostic, they will come up with an error code in the past and that was warranted for a motherboard replacement (of course, they ship the box to the wrong location and I was in the middle of my wedding so I get to it now).. It was pertaining to PCI Express Status ICH9 PCI Express Root Port  where it will generate an error code... Now, running the diagnostic... I will not get any error but PCI Express Root Port 3 & 5 do not show up on the diagnostic... Wouldn't that obvious show something that is a problem when there are 6 ports (which on the previous diagnostic that I can't grab past logs shows that). That is not warranted for a warranty work? Just a note, I got the fail test code (which was intermittent but keep happening and the tech support would not look at previous case.. Port 4 failed and a fatal device code)
    2) Blu-Ray player will not run and their answer is that it is your Blu-Ray until they realize that I ran it on 3 different Blu-Ray player standalone, different Blu-Ray, and confirm DVD will work.. They still think it is a software issue until they can't deny my point when it will not read the Blu-Ray no matter what (they took control and confirmed it).. They believe the HP SmartDVD software was failing because of Win 7 and not Vista (even when I downgrade and confirm it works, I stated the software is the issue...  Lone and behold, 2 months later they had an update that they refuse to admit I was RIGHT on the matter and done 15 hours of troubleshooting that they were wrong about)
    3) Wireless Keyboard and Mouse lost connectivity even if the battery is not low... Just stop typing or omit letters.. This is considering the keyboard is literally in front of the touchscreen
    4) Touchscreen is sensitive when it wants to be but won't in other... Constant issues there
This is why I have so much issue with support.. They seem to show that they will do anything to deny the issue.. Heck, I am a computer technian calling on the issue.. It ain't like I didn't troubleshoot on the matter... But they think we are all morons and when I prove them wrong, they will use any excuse to honor warranty... That is why it is amazing..

Look in your Settings > App Manager.
    Tap Device Monitor.
    Tap the Battery tab.
At the upper right, tap "Since Last Charge" to change to "Last 48 Hours".

  • Can Somebody tell me how to get my MBP like it Was...

I received a new MBP (thanks to a genius who was tired of trying to fix all my software and hardware issues). The same tech said when the new MBP comes in he will transfer my data, settings, etc to my new computer and update it. I did not think of it at the time, but when I got the MBP (the new one back) and realized he transfered everything, Preferences settings, files, folders, even the programs in a seperate folder-all that I would think one could transfer in regards to software. When my new MBP started acting up I realized a lot of the stuff it was doing was what my old MBP was doing.
I called him and asked if we should have tried to fix the software issues before transferring everything or maybe just putting them in folders and I could save my bookmarks, docs, etc. but trash all the settings, preferences, stuff like that.
I would like to get the notebook back to how it arrive at the Apple Store plus with the latest important updates. I know it involves some critical stuff, but I do not have enough confidence that I will be able to accomplish what needs to be done and have it done correctly.
Are there articles for a new MBP that walks a person step by step in removing everything, wiping the HD clean and doing a fresh install, step by step in the correct order of things and leaving everything off other then my passwords, bookmarks, and a few docs?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Roger-
What about the bookmarks? I really have nothing I want to save and transfer over because all I have been through with the old MBP and now this new one with the data that was transferred from my old MBP. I would have thought that the genius guy would have thought about the problems since he was the one who tried to fix the old MBP and left to talk to the manager and came back to tell me they were going to get me a new MBP.
Anyway, what about the ONE-to-One that I registered on this computer and I have a link to click that brings me to my page and other things like my keychain or all my passwords and usernames? It looks like I missed some with the new MBP because it does not have a name and some small stuff like that is missing because I did not do a set-up. The genius guy did the transfer of all my stuff from my old MBP.
There were a lot of updates that the genius guy did get (but when I got the MBP, I have been unable to get the machine to tell me I have new updates). I had to find out was I really missing updates or was it something else. I tried to find the place that lists the updates that come across <Apple>Software Updates... I found several "latest updates, recent 3rd party updates, top Apple downloads, but I am not sure which category is the one that tells me the updates I should have had. I know that iTunes it missed, but the rest I am not sure which list has the updates I need.
Make any sense? I did not get an iLife disk. Is iLife on the grey disks now?

  • Why Can't I Get My Issue Resolved? 3 Weeks and Counting!

For 3 weeks we have been having service issues with Comcast. We have had outage after outage of our phone, internet and cable. We have wasted countless hours on the phone with "customer service" trying to get our issues resoloved. Finally we were down to 1 issue.  Our DVR was not recording. A tech was scheduled to come out on Monday.  He came, parked outside my house, then left.  Great.   Called again, got the run around, apology, etc.  Another tech was scheduled to come out today (7/29/2015).  He showed up!!!!!   He fiddled around with some wires outside, that didn't work.  But, the TV was still working.  He replaced the box inside the house.  And then we waited for the box to reset.  AND..............NOTHING.  NO TV AT ALL.  He tried again, twice.  Still nothing. Then the tech says he thought the issue was with the line and he was "going to find his lineman, who was right around the corner".  2.5 hours later, now with no cable at all, instead of just no DVR, he still hadn't come back.   I called 1-800-XFINITY and spoke to "Jenny".  She tried to contact the tech with no luck, then she scheduled someone else to come back today to fix our issue.  SUPRISE.  Here it is 7:00 ESt and no one has shown up.  My husband has called and was told that a "ticket" was not put in to have a tech come back.  REALLY COMCAST?  This is unacceptable.  How can you think it is OK for an employee to leave a job unfinished and allow your customer to remain without services because of this?????

  • How well do the MBP's hold up?

I've been using laptops for some years now, mainly Dell Inspiron and Latitudes, but just picked up myself an MBP. The MBP seems to be build like a tank with its aluminun case...but how well do these things hold up?
For those of you who have them I would be interested in how much you use your MBP, how you use it...traveling, school, etc. I would also be interested in whether you shut them down or just close the lid, go to your next destination, open it up and continue on with your work?
How well do the keyboards hold up on the MBP? I've gone through a few on my work Latitude.
    Thanks,
    ~Steve

At work I've used a IBM T42 for the last 2 years including lots of international travel.
In short the T42 is a slow (pentium M) bulletproof laptop that has taken everything I've thrown at it without any issues. This includes airports, hot/humid countries and I've never had a problem with presentation projectors.
I have a MBP 15" 2.4 SR with 2GB for home. My first Mac too. Here's my impression:
    1. Aluminium is thin compared to the feel of the T42
    2. Screen wobbles (flexes) more than the T42 this could lead to fatigue when working on the move, when the screen is shut on the T42 the overlap against the side of the laptop prevent side ways knocks to the screen breaking the screen pivot.
    3. Heat issues without smcFanControl. The T42 isn't afraid to ramp up/down it's fans.
    4. No form of desk dock. It's quite useful just to place the laptop in the dock and have everything (power, network, keyboard, mouse, second monitor, skype headset, etc) all connect up in one go. I suppose apple's answer is wireless..
    5. MBP is faster performance than the T42 by a long way.
    6. MBP SR has better battery life by far
    7. T42 wireless experience has been better than the MBP - mainly due to OSX's desire to look for a different connection if the preferred wireless becomes unavailable.
    8. Keys on the T42 becames nice and shiney quite quickly but I don't have a problem with that. MBP has no issues.
    9. MBP has far better trackpad usability - down to OSX. On the move I'd often loose files with the T42 with the trackpad as windows double click on the pad causes drags etc.
10 Webcam in the MBP is a master stroke. With my T42 I carry a Logitech Fusion webcam around to record white board sessions. Now the MBP internal cam can do that - although it does require some odd looking manovers with the MBP!
    11. No getting away from it - MS Office. The move by MS to support Applescript instead of VB for the mac:Office 2008 is a little worrying as VB scripted templates from the business will no longer work. I've yet to see if this will be a problem but it makes me apprehensive.
    12. MS Visio - I've not found a OSX substitute. This needs to be available for integrating into mac:Office 2008 documents, slide sets etc.
    13. HDD movement protection. The T42 has very good movement protection. I don't feel the MBP's is quite up to that standard.
    14. Second monitor/projector support is good with both. I think the MBP OSX has the lead over windows but it does require an adaptor. Just a bind to remember it..
So in short - I would say that the MBP isn't ready for mainstream travel business abuse. The build design is great for sitting in coffee bars or places without much movement but needs more armour and architectural integrity for mainstream business abuse.
The T42 is designed from the bottom up for abuse and it shows it. Now lagging behind in performance and features it's still one of the best (if not the best) business laptops out there.
Working practice perspective - I would prefer the MBP/OSX as a work platform.
I hope I don't get shot by the applofisi but that's my experience.

  • How well does your MBP close?

Just got my MBP yesterday, and besides one dead pixel, and a little whine (mirror widget seems to fix just fine for now), and this closing thing I am very happy.
Whenever I close my MBP it latches fine, but the left, front side has a "sizable" gap between the screen and the primary mass of the machine. It is something I have no trouble living with because it seems to be purely superficial, but I was curious just how well the MBPs are suppose to close? All the way with no space? small gap because of spacers? bigger gap because of... crooked screen?
... I think my hard drive just mooed...
    thanks

Your left latch is NOT locking in place. The latches should both lock in place. If you notice when you close the lid, looking between the display and the body, the left latch is not locking in place. Mine has the gap too, because the left latch is not catching. If you firmly close it with some pressure it WILL catch, sometimes. Both latches should lock in place by gently closing the lid. By closing the lid slowly you will see the right latch comes down and begins to attach to the magnetic bar, the left latch won't even come down to the magnetic bar. It's like the magnetic bar on the left is too deep to catch the metal latch, or too weak. Mine is going back for that reason and the whine issue.
