How is SWAP space and Oracle's Shared Memory related ?

Platform: RHEL 5.4
Oracle Version: 11.2
I was trying to increase MEMORY_TARGET to 15g. Then I encountered the following error
SQL> alter system set memory_max_target=20g scope=spfile;
System altered.
SQL> alter system set memory_target=15g scope=spfile;

MEMORY_TARGET not supported on this system
I gathered that In Linux, if you want to set MEMORY_TARGET, MEMORY_MAX_TARGET to nGB , then you should have a SWAP ( /dev/shm ) of nGB.
My Swap was only 16gb and I was trying to set memory_max_target to 20g
$ df -h /dev/shm
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
tmpfs                  16G  7.2G  8.6G  46% /dev/shmNow, I am wondering how is Oracle's Shared Memory (SGA+PGA) related to SWAP space in a server ? Shouldn't Oracle's Shared Memory be related to Physical RAM rather than disk based SWAP space ?

related question:
In the above mentioned OTN article it says ,
You could encounter ORA-00845 if your shared memory is not mapped to /dev/shm
I think he meant
You could encounter ORA-00845 if your SWAP space is not mapped to /dev/shm .
Am I right ?

  • How to set-up and use FAMILY Sharing

    Can someone please explain to me in detail how to set-up and use FAMILY Sharing, none of the information I have so far found in the documentation helps at all, in fact it puts you in a constant loop giving the same information over and over again
    We have quite a few devices from ipads, iphones and ipods and I need to set-up Family Sharing.
    We have our main Apple ID which is linked to our Payment method, I have now got my son a new iPad, I have created his Apple ID and set-up a link via FAMILY Sharing to our main Apple ID.
    From what I read we should be able to share our purchased Apps between family members.
    So I figured I would be able to get the Apps now via iTunes that are part of the FAMILY Sharing, however when I go into ITunes (latest version downloaded yesterday) I can only see the Home sharing menu item not FAMILY Sharing, so I cannot work out in Itunes how to get Apps that are FAMILY shared.  So ok I will try and get Apps directly via the Ipad using the App Store.  To test it is working I look for a known paid for App, I then go to download it and it is now asking me to pay for it again.
    Can someone please explain to me in detail how FAMILY Sharing is supposed to work and how I get it to work please.
    Thanks for your help
    Greg

    Hey GregWr,
    Thanks for the question. The following resources provides some of the best information regarding Family Sharing. Included, you’ll find information on making sure the accounts are set to "Share my purchases”, as well as information on downloading Family Member purchases from the iTunes Purchased section. Please note that some applications are not shareable.

  • Swap space and tempdb

    Hi,
    I'm having RAID 1 and RAID 5. RAID 1 is partitioned into 3 drive letters, C, D, and E. RAID 5 got only 1 partition, which is drive F. C for OS, D for SAP Kernel, E for Transaction Log and F for SAP Data.
    In which drive should I allocate for swap space and tempdb? Of course for better performance I should have got separate hard disk for these, but unfortunately I can't.
    Any suggestion.
    BTW, my platform is Windows 2003 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005.
    Rgds,
    Hapizorr

    Dear Hapizorr,
    I recommend you review this document developed by Microsoft specifically for SAP systems:

    This will answer your question.
    Thanks

  • Is useing swap space and hibernation secure?

    As I understand it when you hibernate your system the ram is written to the swap space and the computer powers down. Is this secure and encrypted?

    No, it is not. But are ypou running arch from an encrypted filesystem? Otherwise it would be pojntless. Anyway the normal swap is not encrypted either, at least by default.

    There's no Arch Release, but we do have an iso you use to install the system for the first time.

  • SWAP space and RAM size

    Hi all,
         However there is no specific measurement for providing SWAP space,there is a ganeral rule says that "SWAP space must be twice the amount of RAM"...Why this specific value(twice of RAM)..Why it cant be the thrice amount? May i know what is the reason for telling this rule?
    Please can anyone tell me?
    Jasmine

    Hi
    The minimum requirement should be twice the size of RAM.This is because when a core dump occurs the whole active process avaulable in RAM will be written as a core file .the file will be initially written in the swap.The swap has to hold the full amount of memory and inturn swap will also have some files active.So as a minimum requirement you should have twice the amount of RAM as Swap Space.If you have a high storage and you dont know what to do give to to swap,No issue in that.

  • How to install Oracle9iAS and Oracle Portal

    Can anyone help me to install Oracle9iAS and Oracle Portal?
    In which order must they be installed?
    Are there important things to do before the isntalling?
    Or does anyone know where to find clear documentation for the installation?
    thanks

    Portal is installed as part of the 9iAS install.
    You can find the Installation Guide online at http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias/. Choose the Documentation tab. Select your platform (Solaris, NT, etc.), and click HTML or PDF and you'll have the docs you need for installing 9lAS and Portal with default configuration.
    For more info on custom configuring portal, go to http://technet.oracle.com/products/iportal/. There is a section on the page called Configure 9iAS Portal that has links to all the available configuration documentation.
    Best,
    Jay

  • How to swap columns and rows?

    Hi!
    I want to create a simple report from a db table. The "challenge": due to the nature of the data I always get twelve rows (yes, one for every month) and four columns. I'd really like to swap rows and columns. Does anybody know a way to do this? Did I miss something obvious?
    J.

    try working the sql like this
    SELECT DOT_FISCAL_YEAR
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 4, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 4, END_DATE, NULL)) "April"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 5, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 5, END_DATE, NULL)) "May"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 6, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 6, END_DATE, NULL)) "June"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 7, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 7, END_DATE, NULL)) "July"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 8, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 8, END_DATE, NULL)) "August"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 9, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 9, END_DATE, NULL)) "September"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 10, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 10, END_DATE, NULL)) "October"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 11, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 11, END_DATE, NULL)) "November"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 12, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 12, END_DATE, NULL)) "December"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 1, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 1, END_DATE, NULL)) "January"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 2, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 2, END_DATE, NULL)) "February"
    ,MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 3, BEG_DATE, NULL)) || '-' ||
         MAX(DECODE(SEQ, 3, END_DATE, NULL)) "March"
    FROM
    (SELECT DOT_FISCAL_YEAR, to_char(BEG_DATE,'mm/dd/yyyy') BEG_DATE, to_char(END_DATE,'mm/dd/yyyy') END_DATE
    ,TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(TO_DATE(FISCAL_MONTH, 'MM'),'MM'))SEQ
    FROM FDS_FISCAL_CAL.FDS_FISCAL_CAL)
    GROUP BY DOT_FISCAL_YEAR
    order by to_date(substr(DOT_FISCAL_YEAR,3),'RRRR')
    in this example...our fiscal starts in april...so i brought april first...and in this example..my data elements to show are just start and end dates (they keep switching them for months according to some calcs they use internally)...in your case it is the value 500, 450 etc.
    also i have grouped by year as we store many years' data...you can ignore this if you need only 1 yr..

  • How to hide Windows and Oracle Logo?

    I'd like to hide Windows and Oracle Logo in Oracle window

    i found that parameter but didn't know what to set to it i even has no forms in my pc thanks again
    Regards,
    Abdetu...Hi Abdetu,
    There is 3 parameters in the <DevSuiteHome>\forms\server.formsweb.cfg having the same behavior.
    Logo
    Background
    SplashScreen
    By default (if you don't have specified them in you [section] they values are inherited from the [default] section) the values are
    Logo=
    Background=
    SplashScreen=
    This means you will have the oracle logo, the Forms Services background image in your applet and the oracle splash screen at startup.
    *To have nothing shown then just put the value no in front of these 3 parameters*
    Logo=no
    Background=no
    SplashScreen=noYou can also customize that with you own gif files.
    For this you have to put your images in a icons.jar file
    place it in your <DevSuiteHome>\forms\java where frmall.jar and others are located.
    then in your formsweb.cfg :
    Archive=frmall.jar, icons.jar
    ImageBase=CodeBase
    Logo=yourlogo.gif
    Background=yourbackground.gif
    SplashScreen=yourbeautifullsplachscreen.gifAnd at least if you have a small gif in your icons.jar for the window you can also defining the Icon Filename property in Forms builder. This wile replace the default forms runtime icon.
    Hope this helps

  • Siebel and Oracle Ebiz sharing the same DB

    Can Siebel and Oracle Ebusiness suite link up with the same database?
    Any pointers to this, i would someone would have tried this out with consolidating multiple Oracle applications.
    Any documentation available on this should be of great help.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Ebusiness suite has very specific requirements for parameters, database versions, tablespace naming, patch level, and cloning. I have not installed Siebel, but I suspect it would have it's own requirements which will be different from Ebus.
    I think it is very likely you will run into conflicts between the requirements of the two applications. Maybe not today, but definitely during the next patch or upgrade.
    For vendor applications it is better to keep them in their own databases to avoid requirements conflicts.
    You could open an SR with Oracle Support to ask if they will support a database with both applications installed.

  • How do I remove a DB from shared memory in Solaris 10?

    I'm having trouble removing  an in-memory database placed in shared memory. I set SHM key and cache size, and then open an environment with flags: DB_CREATE | DB_SYSTEM_MEM | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_TXN. I also set the flag DB_TXN_NOSYNC on the DbEnv. At the end, after closing all Db and DbEnv handles, I create a new DbEnv instance and call DbEnv::remove. That's when things get weird.
    If I have the force flag set to 0, then it throws an exception saying "DbEnv::remove: Device busy". The shared memory segments do not get removed in this case (checking with `ipcs -bom`).
    When the force flag is set to zero, the shared memory is released but the program crashes saying "Db::close: BDB0087 DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery".
    What am I doing wrong?

    This is curious, since a simple program similar to what is described is known to work. I've modified the standard sample program examples/cxx/EnvExample.cpp C++ to use an in-memory database, DB_SYSTEM_MEM, and DB_TXN_NOSYNC. The "Device busy" symptom occurs if the close of the environment handle is bypassed. I have not been able to reproduce the DB_RUNRECOVERY error.
    How does the program's use of Berkeley DB different from what is provided in EnvExample.cpp?
    Is it possible to send me the relevant portions of it?
