How long redo logs keep the transactions?

I learn Oracle and decide to do an experiment. There was a table in the test database. I deleted the file that contained this table via OS. And then I added transactions to this table.
I did 'insert' several times, then 'commit', then 'alter system switch logfile' several times, 'alter system flush buffer_cache', 'alter system flush shared_pool' and nothing happened. I could add and take data from this table successfully. Alert log showed the error only when I shutdown the database.
SQL> shutdown immediate
ORA-01116: error in opening database file 13
ORA-01110: data file 13: '/oracle/oradata/test5/POSTEMPTEST2.dbf'
ORA-27041: unable to open file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3
I understand that transactions are put in the redo logs at first, and then are transferred to the datafile on disk. I thought that command 'ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT' writes transactions from redo logs to datafile on disk, but I was wrong. How long redo logs keep transactions? Is there the way to push data from redo logs to datafile?
I use Oracle 10.2.0.1.0.

i believe this time you will see the error message during your SQLsWRONG!probably you did not read the complete post of mine before saying WRONG. You tell me, if data file containing a table is deleted at OS level (in *nix), and then you try to insert data in this table and want to retrieve the data from the table (If data is not in db cache or cache has been flushed), from where data will come? Or if you want to insert some data into this table for which new extent are required to be allocated, where it will be allocated? Will your SQLs succeed or will return some error? Either SQL should return you data (which is not possible as data file is no there to fetch the data), or SQL should fail with some error message.
I mimicked the situation on IBM AIX, following is the outcome.

  • Mavericks is installed and runs well, but how long should I keep the small windows "Optimizing Your Mac" ? It has been now one month!!!

Small window "Optimizing your Mac" (see below) has been on my Desktop for over a month now.
How long should I keep it (... without "impacting the performance or the battery life")?

Closing it when it first appeared wouldn't have stopped the 'optimization' so you could have closed it any time and can do so now - in any case optimization will have long since completed.

  • HT4059 How long can I keep the free iBook download?

I downloaded free books from the iBook site.  How long do I get to keep them?  Will they be automatically be deleted at some point?

No. Unless you delete them, they will saty there. They are free books and not limited time samples.

  • Why do i have two game center accounts on one apple id and how do i log into the other one

One day while i was bored i started up a game but all of my progress items and everything that i paid for was gone and it was the same in all of my other game center related apps. After a long chain of emails with the maker of the game he stopped being helpful but we figured out that i have two game center accounts but only one apple id. So how do i log into the account with all of my data?

Get a separate Apple ID for one of the phones. Or turn OFF iCloud contacts synching on the one you do not want contacts to synch.

  • How long would it take the Apple Store to fix this common problem?

I have the 2010-2011 macbook black screen of death, some days it crashes at least 4 times a day! screen just blacks out and i have to restart. other than that everything works fine
    http://oleb.net/blog/2012/05/15-inch-mbp-mid-2010-crashing-to-black-screen/
now here it says apple will fix this for free, so i scheduled a genius appointment for Monday, this guy here says apple just replaced the entire logicboard, how long should it take?
also how can Apple verify that i have the same problem?  (I'm pretty sure it is the same problem)
I saved one of the error logs in a text file, maybe that should help.

    Hi,
The Primary site has two servers, each with one instance, using RAC.
The Standby site has another two servers and two instances using also RAC.
This is a logical Standby database, the Dataguard is working fine and the data is being replicated.
This is the configuration of the second instance of the Standby site (Server1b)

    Hi,
The Primary site has two servers, each with one instance, using RAC.
The Standby site has another two servers and two instances using also RAC.
This is a logical Standby database, the Dataguard is working fine and the data is being replicated.
This is the configuration of the second instance of the Standby site (Server1b)

  • Clearing Online redo logs on the target physical standby

    Hi,
    Version 11202.
    Primary on machine A
    Standby on machine B
Following note: 11.2 Data Guard Physical Standby Switchover Best Practices using SQL*Plus [ID 1304939.1].
Online redo logs on the target physical standby need to be cleared before that standby database can become a primary database. And later :
On the target physical standby run the following query to determine if the online redo logs have not been cleared... 1) I did not understand where i should run the query. On machine A or on machine B ?
    2)
Online redo logs on the target physical standby need to be CLEARED
What does it mean that it need to be CLEARED ? Does transaction might be lost by running the clearing command?
    Thanks

I have used my note many times in production.
For example they needed to do some power work on the main server room a few months back on the weekend.
We did switchovers until the work was complete and then a switch back.
I wrote a short document called "Switchover post-mortem lessons" the main point from that was :
    1.
getting ORA-01017 issues in Oracle forms (  Application ) after the switchover to standby.
The issue was caused by the Standby database having a different parameter for passwords than the Primary database.
This did not show up in testing because all the tester we used had converted passwords from Oracle 10.
    Solution
When in doubt issue this on the new Primary :
    SQL>ALTER SYSTEM SET SEC_CASE_SENSITIVE_LOGON = FALSE;
Note: This command can be issued repeatedly with no negative effect on the system.2.
The query to check switch_over status was returning "LOG SWITCH GAP"
    select switchover_status from v$database;
This is an issue because Oracle says the return values should be one of these :
    NOT ALLOWED
    SESSIONS ACTIVE
    SWITCHOVER PENDING
    SWITCHOVER LATENT
    TO PRIMARY
    TO STANDBY
    RECOVERY NEEDED
LOG SWITCH GAP is not one of the expected value. In addition this phase is not search friendly either on the Oracle support site or your favorite search engine.
Given this I ran this query :
    SELECT
      NAME AS STANDBY,
      SEQUENCE#,
      APPLIED,
      COMPLETION_TIME
    FROM
      V$ARCHIVED_LOG;
    Solution
    SQL>ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE;
And wait a few minutesMy switchover document had no issue.
    Best Regards

  • How long does apple keep messages in imessage?

    Hello,
Can any one tell me how long does Apple keep messages sent via iMessage in the iCloud (or anywhere else)?
    Thanks

So forceful! You have a source for that subpoena and a date I suppose? My Google-Fu must be weak because I couldn't find such a subpoena on the net.
By the way, that answer isn't a "no." "As long as necessary" can be along time since Apple cannot determine when you've read it everywhere you want to and so it's OK to delete.
I was able to pull iMessages from old deleted message threads on a new device. I also come home and sit at my Mac and my message conversation from the day on my iPhone becomes mirrored in iMessages on my computer, attachments and all, where I then copy the things I can't on the phone like ringtones and so on. Anyone can try this at home and I suggest you do. Where are these messages stored all day as I'm using my phone to be later mirrored on my home Mac?
I'm not seeing an error. I'm not just looking at unsent messages. Does it even matter anyway? Apple stores messages and their ToS states that they can do this, you agreed to it, and this policy can change at any time without your consent. Read it, thoroughly. I had to deconstruct it in a law class for a paper. I doubt you did this.
You are defensive but nobody is attacking Apple. Of course Apple stores messages for a long time. Why wouldn't they? Apple necessarily has access to the iMessage servers exactly the same as the servers that store your email or photo streams. There are legitimate business reasons! No one is saying they are abusing this access. This isn't even an issue but saying it doesn't happen betrays a lack of knowledge how this tech works.
If someone sent you a bunch of iMessages, maybe hundreds, and you haven't read them they aren't stored indefinitely until you read them on a device or on a Mac with your iCloud account? Can you say how long? No, you can't and neither can anyone outside of Apple and this is a changing number anyway.
You believe that once a message is sent that Apple immediately deletes it? Why would they when there's no requirement? You might check it from another device later on, Apple can't know if you've read it everywhere you want to. Syncing conversations across devices that are checked at different times requires some amount of storage of historical messages! Deleting a message immediately once sent would prevent this.
Do you thoroughly understand the technology involved? Do you have inside Apple knowledge of trade secrets?
I posted in this thread because I genuinely want to help the OP and you are speaking without evidence whereas my assertion is easily tested by the community in 10 minutes.

How long can you keep a movie rental, once it's downloaded? Do u need wifi to watch it?

As long as it's been fully downloaded then you shouldn't need to be online in order to watch it.
As to how long you have to watch it, from here :
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library.

  • How long should you use the Macbook is the fan is at Max?

Hey all, the reason i ask is because sometimes when i visit a site with embedded video the CPU rises and heats up so the fan goes up to max. How long should you keep there with out damaging anything? Sometimes the videos are 45 mins, there tv shows and by 5th min is heated up and i dont want to keep it running for the rest of the 45 mins and wreck somthing. Whats the max time for that?

Not really an answer but I was wondering where your computer is located or how you are using it? My kids were putting a quilted blanket on their lap and then running their notebook on top of the blanket. The blanket had a terrible insulating affect on the computer. And to make matters worse, sometimes the blanket would block the fan exhaust! I had to scold them and teach them to put something else on the blanket over their lap, like a book, and then put the notebook on the book. That really stopped the fan from running a lot.
It's just something to be aware of. The MB will run cooler if there is space all around it.

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?
    Check your power status
From the  menu: Hold OPTION and click System Information... èHardware è Power
Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.

How long does it take the 'Do Not Disconnect' screen to disappear?
I Just got my ipod nano a week ago. I put maybe 10 songs on there and then today, since I had some time, decided to start creating my library. By the time I decided to stop and plug in my nano so it can update, i had like 219 songs that had to be transferred. I watched each song on iTunes go to the ipod like usual and then my list that comes up when you select "__ ipod" is all grayed out like it's still updating. On the top of the iTunes screen, it says ipod update is complete though, and of course, my ipod has been saying do not disconnect for the past hour and a half with the battery fully charged. Does it really take that long for it to finish synching my songs? I mean I know I had a lot of songs to put on there put geez!

    Hi CocoaVixen718
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try ejecting your iPod from iTunes. You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #61685 about The "Do Not Disconnect" Message and Knowledge Base Document #93492 explains How to Safely Disconnect the iPod.
