How many catalogs do you have?

I read a tip recently where a photographer recommended creating a new catalog for every client job. His concern was performance and reliability as he added 5-10 thousand images per week from various jobs. I've started doing this myself and it seems logical. Any pros or cons? Do most of you just use the one default catalog?
Thanks
Michael Gauthier

I have just one catalog.  One catalog is the same as one database.  One database can contain a myiad of information on a particular subject.  In the case of Lightroom, the subject is Photography, any kind of Photography.  The catalog can contain Sports images, Landscape images, Portrait images and so on and so forth.  The driving idea behind a single Lightroom catalog is the ability to look in one location for any image that you've placed within the Lightroom catalog.  Using mutiple catalogs to me is a kin to storing my entire music CD collection throughout the house, assigning my jazz collection in the den, my classical collection in the Livingroom, my Top 40 collection in the kitchen and my Hard Rock collection in the garage.  Why would I walk around the entire house making my selection of music for the evening?  Would it not make more sense to place my entire collection of music CD's in one location?
I think the best way to "manage" images would be better served by folder usage, rather than catalog usage.  Using mutiple catalogs requires have to remember additional information I'll need to find a specific image.
Recently, I've been spending time rearanging my images into "Subject" folders such as, Sports Photography, Landscape Photography and Event Photography.
Within the Sports Photography Folder, I  have subfolders for Chicago Bears, Cubs and White Sox.  In the Event Photography, I have subfolders for Easter 2008, Christmas 2007, My Birthday.  Using the file method just described by reducing the number of "root" folders, I've now reduced the total number of folders I have to "slide" through to find the folder that I need.
I've also been making heavy use of Collections to quickly find the "best of the best" within the folders and sub-folders within my single catalog.
Are multiple catalogs ever appropriate?  Sure.  I however limited myself to a second catalog while initialily installing and testing Lightroom.  Once I was confident in using Lightroom's cataloging features and commands, I quickly removed the second "test" catalog.
While my catalog isn't very large currently, about 10K images with 1:1 Rendered Previews, I  have yet to lose or failed to find even one single image.
As to creating a catalog for each and every client might make sense if you anticipate having only a few clients.  What happens when you reach the 25 client mark?  Or the 50 client mark?  Or the 327 client mark?  Would you seriously consider making 327 catalogs?  How long would you be willing to spend going through 327 catalogs with a total of 520,000 images just to find one?  In this particular case, the photographer's concern for performance is badly misplaced.  A much better area for performance concerns should be placed in computer hardware.  Having a faster CPU, shorter disk access times and scratch disk space would serve much better on the performance side than having 327 catalogs to have to search through.
In the end, the discussion of one catalog vs. mutiple catalogs is like the arguement between Chevy vs. Ford.  It's never ending and more than likely once a position is taken, is usaully never changed.

    There is no documented limit.
Note that Smart Playlists with Live Updating use extra processing, so if you have more than a few dozen of them you may notice a slowdown.
Some people think they should create a playlist for each album.  If by any chance that is the reason you are asking the question, you will find it is much easier to get to an album via the column browser.

Yes, I believe they do.  The places data is associated with GPS coordinates tagged on each photo.  I think the faces data works the same way -- it is associated with each photo regardless of what album it is in.

How many tasks can you have in a plan?
What is the maximum number of tasks I can reasonably expect to have in a newScale service (version 2007)?
I have approximately 30 tasks in my service.  When the authorizations are complete, and the tasks are initially scheduled, my server response time (between clicking Approve and seeing the next screen) is about 30 seconds.
Does this sound unusual?  Am I trying to do too much with my service?
    Thanks!

    Hi Joe,
There is no "upper limit" on the number of tasks that you can have in a plan. Having said that, the complexity of a plan -- including conditions and the use of external tasks -- can certainly be a factor in response times.
Having said this, 30 seconds seems like a long time and I strongly suggest that you open a case with customer care on this item.

how many devices can you have on 1 icloud accout?

It's unusual for a whole family to use the same icloud account, since that way everyone gets the same emails, contacts, calenders, etc.  All it takes is one family member to delete a contact by mistake and then it will be deleted from everyone's devices.  Not good.  The usual advice is for every individual to have their own icloud account.

  • How many times do you have to pay for Creative Cloud complete plan prepaid if it says an amount of money per year? do you have to pay that every year?

how many times do you have to pay for a Creative Cloud complete plan prepaid if it says an amount of money per year? do you have to pay that every year?

Perhaps the unclear part here is that the Cloud is a subscription offering. You never pay for it outright and never actually own it.
12 months pre-paid simply means paying the full 12 months subscription upfront. The following year, you do the same. And the same every year after that.
Like any subscription, if you want to keep using the software, you keep paying the monthly (or annual) fee every month (or year), year in, year out.
When you cancel your subscription, or it expires and you don't renew, then the software stops working.

  • How many albums do you have?

How many albums do you have? How much variation do you have between albums?
I have so many pictures I'm having a hard time deciding on how to setup albums.

    John,
I don't have a lot of albums. There's no one-to-one correspondence between photos and albums, so I choose not to use them as my main organizational scheme. I prefer working in Library view, where I do get each photo once and only once. (I use V6 Film Rolls, which is the same as Events in '08.) When importing photos, I place them in my most recent, current roll (event) or begin a new one. Then I keyword all of the new photos, and they're good to go. Working chronologically makes sense to me, and I pretty much remember where my photos are. In addition, I can find any photo or group of photos in my library by filtering by keywords and date.
I use albums for special collections and projects. I have some smart albums for the best photos of my kids' birthdays. I gather photos into albums to prepare for printing. I also create albums for the purpose of adding slideshows to my home movies in iDVD, and to use as title frames in iMovie.
That's just my system; it works for me. iPhoto is so flexible and powerful that in time you'll find one that works for you.
    Regards.

  • Question: How many photos can you have per album?

I am a new ipad user and I am curious as to how many photos I can have per album? Thanks in advance.

We'll have a look at three different issues.
    - If you want to carry over your tags structure from one catalog to a new one created for the new year, use the small dropdown menu in the title bar of the keywords panel. There is an option to copy the tags and categories structure to a text file. There is another option you'll use when you have created the new empty catalog: it will recreate the same structure of categories and keywords.
    - The catalog is hidden by default. I don't know if you can make that folder visible in the Mac, but you can move or copy it to another visible location in your file structure from the finder.  The catalog copy will be found in 'custom' location from the catalog manager. Alternatively, you can shut the Organizer and double click on the catalog.pse10db file to open the organizer with the catalog copy.
    - I have already reported the bug about not being able to delete a big number of files at the same time. It's sort of acknowledged, but without any clear hope of solution. When I upgraded to PSE13 in Windows, I could see that there was an improvement due to the fact that it is now a 64 bits application which can use all of my 8 GB RAM. The problem is that the process uses all the available RAM progressively, and aborts when there is no more. So, we should avoid workflows implying mass deletions.

  • How do you tell how many Safari's you have open?

I am new MacBook user and am haven't figured out how to tell how many Safari windows I have open or how to quickly navigate between them. When using XP I would just click on the IE I want from the taskbar, or if they are grouped select the one I want from within in the group.
For Safari it appears I can either click on Windows -> select from the bottom of the list, or click and hold the Safari icon and wait until a list appears and then select from that list. Both of these options seem slow and laborious for a keyboarder.
    - Is there a way to make the individual Safari's show up when I do a Command -> Tab?
    - Or is there some functionality I am just unaware of to flip between Safari windows?

    Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions and Mac Computing
I am new MacBook user and am haven't figured out how to tell how many Safari windows I have open or how to quickly navigate between them.
The best way to navigate with Safari is to activate Tabs via the Safari Menu (at the top of the screen, to the right of the Apple Menu)>Preferences. In the Preference panel, click on Tabs and check the 3 boxes.
Using your "hot keys" Command/T keys will create a new tab.
In the browser window, various Tabs that are opened will appear below the Tool Bar (where the web site address is displayed). Clicking on a tab takes you from one site to the next (similar to what you see in Internet Explorer (where the Tabs are along the bottom of the screen).
If you install 3rd party add-on Glims, you'll add a number of very useful features to Safari, including more options with the Tabs. Once installed, you'll find the Glims options as a separate panel in Safari Preferences panel.

  • Install Log - how many errors did you have?

After 30 minutes of the machine saying it would be done in "about a minute" I decided there must be something wrong, so I looked at the Install Log, to make sure things were still happening.
Surprise! over 1500 Errors logged! Is that normal? I've never looked at the Install Log for an OS install, so I'm not sure how many are typical. How many errors did you guys have?
Note: I performed an "Install & Archive"

Install the admin software on the laptop.
Client software is built into the OS, so just enable it on the Desktop in System Prefs -> Sharing -> Remote Management

The sparsebundle will expand in size as required.. there is not set size.. when the hard disk is full then each TM should start deleting old backups. If you want to set a size for each backup then you will need to create a disk image.. but really TM can be left to look after this itself.
