How to create 640x480 iPod movies

I have some movies in iMovie, and some other DV files that I want to convert to mp4 or m4v 640x480 files. I have QuickTime Pro, but the "Export > Movie to iPod" does 320x240.
I've tried to export using MPEG-4, using the settings provided by Apple, but iTunes will not transfer it to my iPod (saying that my iPod can't play it.
Additionally, Apple says to use one of the following:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
or
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
However, I can't find "H.264 Baseline Low-Complexity Profile" or "MPEG-4 Simple Profile" anywhere in QuickTime.
I've tried everything. Nothing is working. I want to take advantage of the iPod's full quality, as I view my movies on a television or projector.
Video iPod 30GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

MPEG Streamclip was the solution. I dropped the reference movie iMovie creates (Project > [Control-Click] Show Package Contents > Shared Movies > iDVD) into Streamclip. Chose File > Export to MPEG-4, hit the iPod button on the top right, and chose the top radio button (640x480 (4:3)). Results were fabulous. Transferred to iPod no problem, and displayed on television with much better clarity. Transitions were cleaner and overall a much better picture.

  • How to create the "300" Movie Effect in FCP

Would be eternally grateful if someone could tell me how to create the 300 movie look in Final Cut Pro. I've scoured the Interwebs for a tutorial with no luck.

I think it's not as hard as people think, it just looks intimidating because there are no popup windows. Everything in the interface is on the top of the rooms. Just think if FCP had things this way...
I learned to use color in a class in Cupertino (I'm a certified trainer in Color and FCP) but gotta say, it's just not "Mac-like" in it's interface. It was originally written for Unix as was Shake, so they look similar... but they really aren't that hard to learn. The certified training course in Color is only a 2 day affair. I could teach anybody color on a one on one in one day. Doesn't make them a colorist just as learning FCP doesn't make them an editor... but the buttons? yep 1 day.
FCPs full training is 8 days for full level 2 certification, and even then, it doesn't cover everything you could do in FCP...
I teach a 15 week course in FCP and STILL don't have time to teach it all. So what's easier to learn? Color.

  • How to create a Quicktime movie using Cocoa QTKit

I am trying to find some example code on how to create a short Quicktime movie in a Cocoa app. The sample code I've seen so far is all for capturing the frames from an external source (e.g. camera).
Also, I am looking for how to control the compression engine to ensure that I can create a small Quicktime file if there is a lot of frames with small amounts of change in them.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to create frameless QT movies?

How do you create frameless movies like the new Mac Ad ilife_642x362.mov?
I notice it also has a small subtle start button in the lower right corner.
The only difference I could spot from the other 5 was that it was made with LiveStage Pro.
This is how movies should look, minimalist.

I've been learning about QT Pro by reading Apple's documentation and reading this discussion group.
I haven't looked at it myself so I can't really give an endorsement, but there is a book out there all about producing stuff in QuickTime, and its author has some impressive examples on his web site:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster
The more I learn about QuickTime the more convinced I become that it is amazingly powerful and that it is so powerful that (as with Word Perfect or PhotoShop) NOBODY, no, not even Kirkster, understands everything that it can do.
My advice is that you familiarize yourself with QuickTime on a conceptual level. Get to know in a general sense what it does and what the limits are (for instance, it handles media in tracks, all the tracks are synchronized, but each track may have its own timebase, etc). Extrapolate from there and consider what QuickTime might be able to do, then look through the documentation, this discussion group, and Kirk's web site (and anywhere else you see a QuickTime movie) and see if you can figure out how it was done.
Oh, here's a couple of uses for QuickTime that I am particularly proud of, using QuickTime as a substitute for inline images in a web page:
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/adventures/tr2005/ustsc.html
    Another one, similar application:
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/adventures/tr2006/eam01.html
Another, more conventional this time, with an embedded movie:
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/adventures/tr2006/orlando.html
And finally, for this page I used QuickTime to force a known type of handling for an audio element:
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/adventures/tr2004/caml01.html#r et2
And yet, all of those are very conventional examples...!

In short, I would like load the appropriate version of the

What exactly are you trying to do?
I don't think you are going to be able to create your own Flash objects. Maybe you can export the data and manipulate it externally.

  • How to create a iPod/Iphone Home Screen icon

My icon file is a 512*512 pixels PNG file. It works fine on my devices
    during development.
And when I try to load to iTune, it seems like iTune can not display this
since it requires a 57*57 PNG file.
Could anyone show me how to convert this 512*512 PNG file to 57*57 PNG file?
I am a new Mac user and it will be appreciated if you can show me how to do it?
    Thanks.

Are you talking about when you upload your app to iTunes Connect?
Your app needs to contain a 57x57 pixel icon in PNG format. It should be referenced in the Info.plist file - there's a property called "Icon file" in it. Drop the icon into your project in Xcode, and enter the name of the file, e.g. myappicon.png into the "Icon file" entry in Info.plist.
When you build your app for distribution, it will be included and iTunes Connect will check your zipped package for the correct icon.
If, however, you want to know how to make it a 57x57 pixel icon, simply use Photoshop or GraphicConverter or any of the other myriad paint apps to resize it.
Don't add the shine and rounded corners effect that you see on icons on the device, the iPhone/iPod touch will do that for you.

  • How to create iPad-ready movie with chapters In PP & media encoder

Is there a tutorial to do this?  I've seen it mentioned a number of times related to the "end of life" for Encore, but can't find anything in my Media Encoder nor Premier Pro CC to indicate how to do it.
    Thx...jw

Which version of Premiere? CC does not include Encore, but you can download the Encore CS6 from your account. As it is part of Premiere CS6, I believe you would need to download and install Premiere/Encore CS6, and then you can uninstall Premiere CS6, leaving Encore CS6 installed.
If you have Premiere CS6, then you already have Encore CS6. In either case, from Premiere, use File > Export > Media to open Media Encoder. For FORMAT, choose "MPEG-2 DVD", then choose an appropriate preset from the list. For instance, if editing with 1080i, then you might choose NTSC Widescreen High Quality. For 1080p, then use the Progressive version, etc.
What is your source video format? If starting with HD, then check the box at the bottom of AME for Max Render Quality, it helps with the scaling.
Hit EXPORT at bottom and it exports two files, an .m2v for video and .wav for audio. Open Encore, start a New DVD project, and then File > Import > As Timeline and grab both those files for import. From there, I recommend finding an Encore tutorial, too involved for me to type it all out here.
Hope this gets you going at least, but search online for tutorials, there is plenty of good, free stuff out there
    Thanks

  • How To: Use FCPX to create iPhone Portrait Movies (and other non-standard formats)

Goal: Use Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 to produce a 640x1136 video (iPhone 5 Portrait). You can use these same steps to produce virtually any dimensions you want. My example is for the iPhone 5, in Portrait mode.
This information is available in various places, but you have to realy work to find it, so I thought I'd post a step-by-step guide here.
By the way, you might think you could just create a FCPX Project with your desired dimensions, but you can't (at least with 10.0.7). Projects only support certainly dimensions. But there are other ways, as the rest of this post describes:
    1) Create an initial movie with the desired dimensions, to serve as a template. We'll call it "Template.mov". The only thing that matters is the dimensions. It can be in any codec FCPX understands, and virtually any length.
I'm using a 2 second video shot on my iPhone for the template. You could also create a blank image (.png, whatever) with the proper dimensions, copy and paste it into a new Quick Time Pro 7 window, and Export it using custom settings. There's lots of different ways to do this.
    2) Drop Template.mov into a FCPX event.
    3) Select Template.mov in the Event browser, and select File->Duplicate (or command-D). You probably could just edit "Template.mov", but it's a good idea to save it for reuse.
    3) Change the name of the copied video. I'm using "iPhone Video".
    4) Right-click "iPhone Video" and select "Open in Timeline".
    5) If you made the Template video from a still image, you may need to change the duration (ctrl+D). You don't have to make it very long, but it needs to be longer than 1 frame. A few seconds should be enough.
    6) Use this timeline like you'd use a project's timeline. Drop in new content, trim, transition, etc. There may be things you can't do in it, but I haven't found any yet. I'm guessing Chapters may not work, but I haven't tried them.
    7) Note that when you drop new content into the timeline, it may size funny. That's because the default setting for "Spacial Conform" is "Fit". Simply select the newly-dropped content, and in the Video settings inspector, scroll down to "Spacial Conform" and change it. You could use "Fill", which fills the frame vertically, or "None", which uses the source's original height. Then crop/transform/whatever to get what you want.
    8) When you're ready to render, select "iPhone Video" in the Event browser, then use the "Share" button. You want to use the "Export File" destination, which you may have to add. Pick your codec, and let 'er rip.
    9) When the rendering is done, you should have a video in your desired dimensions.
That's all there is to it. Hope this helps someone.
    Dan
PS: Don't ask why someone would want to create an iPod video using FCPX. The point is that you may need to create a video with non-standard  dimensions at some point in time, and this is how to do it.
PPS: Most of this information came from http://library.creativecow.net/articles/payton_t/FCPX_Custom-Resolution-Timeline s/video-tutorial. I just wrote it down, while I tried to do what the video suggested.

Instructions for using QuickTime Pro 7 to create a template video with unusual dimensions.
I suspect that anyone savy enough to be using FCPX has probably already figured out how to do this, either using my technique or another, so there probably isn't a real need for me to post this. For that matter, I may be the only person who cares about this at all. However, while I was trying to learn how to do all of this, I would have really appreciated having all the information in one place, so here goes.
If you want to create a video with unusual dimensions (like 640x1136) using my steps above, you'll need a "template" video first. Here's an easy way to create one, using any image editor, and QuickTime Pro 7.
    1) Open QuickTime Pro 7 (QTP for short).
    2) From the menu, select File->New Player. You'll get a window with just the bottom portion of the player, i.e. the playback controls.
    3) Using an image editor, create a still image in the desired dimensions. You can use any image editor. It doesn't matter what the image contains (although it will end up showing as a thumbnail in FCPX).
    4) Copy the image to the clipboard.
    5) Switch back to QTP, and paste the image into the new player. Don't worry that there isn't a video window showing - just paste it into the window that has only playback controls. As soon as you do, the video window appears.
    6) Advance to the end of the movie (the short, 1-frame movie), then hold down Command+V (paste) and keep holding it down to paste multiple images in. Watch the time advance. You could, if you want, just hold down Command+V until you get the length you want. But if you want a long video, there's an easier way:
    7) When you reach a few seconds (or whatever duration your patience allows), select all (Command+A) and copy (Command+C). Then hold down Command+V to keep pasting in the longer clips. Wait until you reach a longer duration, then repeat the process. So, for example, 1 second, then 10 seconds, then 1 minute, then 10 minutes, then 1 hour. Or whatever you want.
    8) Save the video however you want. I usually use File->Export with H.264, with Quality set to "Least". Just make sure you don't let it change the dimensions. If you resized the player window, depending on which "save" or "export" method you've chosen, it might default to the resized dimensions, so double check that to make sure.
That's it. You now have a template video you can use with my previous post(s).

  • How do you "Create an iPod or iPhone version"?

I bought "Daddy Day Care" from the iTunes store, and after syncing my iPod many, many times, it still won't show up on my iPod. It's a 2nd generation, with 3 gigabytes left. Daddy Day Care is only 1 gigabyte. I think it's the video dimensions, as the touch's dimensions are 640 x 480, and the movie is 853 x 480. I highlighted the movie, and went to the top menu of iTunes, clicked advanced, and tried to click "Create an iPod or iPhone version", but it's grayed out. Does anyone know how to fix this, so that I can watch my movie on my iPod? Thanks!!

I want to know how to create a backup file (because I'm pretty new with itunes, and it's hard to use it for me still), how to store my app data/media/videos, etc. And how I can retrieve them back when I'm done with the app I tried on my friend's computer.
If anyone can help, it'd be great! Thank you so much!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.
