How to create formula using summary total minus a non-summary total

Question

The report compares budget to actual. To get actual information, the amount is grouped by natural account (segment 0). The budget information is at the natural account level. The next step is to take the actual subtotal by account less the buget amount. How do I do that?
I cannot use the summary total less the buget amount as that results in the error message that "a summary has been specified on a non-recurring field." When I research that error message, I get the notion that a running total would work, but how do I use it in the formula expression?
The fields are @amount which is the journal line entry debit amount or the journal line entry credit amount * (-1) which is subtotalled by natural account. The budget amount is from the budget detail table (BGT1) by natural account.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to go to training yet so I am working at a considerable deficit. This is a helpful forum community and I look forward to your reply.

Where in the report are you trying to do this?  If you have the data grouped, then you should be able to do a SUM in the group footer .
Something along these lines:
//@groupsum
SUM({@amount}),{table.AccountNumber})
Then, still in the Group Footer put another Formuls
//@comparison
{@groupsum} - {table.Actual}
