How to detect which Oracle ODBC Driver is installed using VBA Excel

Hi,
I have an excel workbook containing database queries that uses an oracle ODBC driver to update data. However different machines have different versions of the ODBC drivers installed and so although the code works on my machine, it doesn't on others because the ODBC connection reference is different.
So as a first step, I would like Excel to automatically find what ODBC drivers are installed when the macro is run so that I could dynamically change the ODBC connection reference depending on what drivers are installed.
The connection strings relating to ODBC drivers are in following formats:
Machine A: "ODBC;DRIVER={Oracle OraDb11g_home1}
Machine B: "ODBC;DRIVER={Oracle in instantclient11_1}
ETC
All machine run windows XP.
Alternatively would there be an easier way to connect to a shared orcale database without the need of installing any additional drivers?

Problem with Excel & ODBC drivers really has NOTHING to do with Oracle RDBMS.
I suggest you tag your post as "Off Topic" & post it in some Excel forum instead.

I am trying to read KEY_<PRODUCT NUMBER> registry key and eventually searching ORACLE_HOME value. This helps me in searching Oracle Driver in ODBCINST.INI registry key. (Oracle in OraDb10g_home1)
If multiple Oracle clients are installed on the same system, multiple KEY_<PRODUCT NUMBER> registry keys and oracle drivers would be available. I am not sure which and how to select the current active oracle driver.

Can anybody help me out? Can I use inventory file (inventory.xml) to determince current active home directory? Reading PATH environment variable to identity active home directory would be tedious.

to a Oracle 8.1.7 Database that is located on a Solaris Box. I am using the Oracle
Thin Driver (classes12.zip) supplied by Oracle.
The relevant portion of config.xml looks like this:

to JDBC connections and JDBC objects via our pools and DataSources will be via a
wrapper object of ours. This is necessary to allow us to retain control over the pool and
User Transactions. Also, because the DataSource is supposed to work whether from
a serverside class or an external client JVM, there will have to be an intermediary JDBC
object that acts as a proxy from the external client to the real thin driver connection
in the server. One can't ship JDBC connections across the wire as-is.

How to know which Oracle version database I am using ?

I am configuring an administrative file on the server and there are many databases in our company : there are Oracle8i, Oracle9i and Oracle 10g databases.
What I know only is the connect string which I use to connect to a database via Sql*Plus. But I do not know if it is in 8i or 9i or 10g.
So can you help me how to know the database version which I am using ?

To be clear I tell you my big problem : I am developing a forms application. There is a specification in my project telling that if the end-user does nothing during a periode of time which can be set by an administrative user , say 3 minutes , then the end-user session is disconnected. So how to implement this ?
I tried to use profile and the sqlnet.expire_time but it is too long greater than the set time-limit !
So what is the best way to implement this functionality ?
Note that in my forms application, I wrote a query on the dba_profiles view to get the value of the column limit for the resource_name idle_time. All users , that is the "public" keyword , have been granted select on dba_profiles by sys , and this value of the limit column is the time-limit I used in my forms. When the forms application is run then there is a timer created which periodically tests connection to the database by issuing a simple select statement. The periodicity of the timer is set to the value of the limit column in dba_profiles plus one minute because I set sqlnet.expire_time to 1 minute. When the disconnection arrives then there should be a message displayed to the end-user saying that he cannot do anything because his session has been stoped.
I think I was clear and I am waiting for a good advice from all of you.

Crystal Report Oracle ODBC driver invalid Thai character display problem

   My server has CR Oracle ODBC 5.1 installed on last week. We have several reports in the servers which called by our Application to export to text file and pdf file. Sometimes, the output (both text file and pdf file) can't display Thai character correctly. The text file show Thai character in question mark and pdf file show in square box. This problem occur randomly and disappear without doing anything. Sometimes the problem occur for an hour and gone but sometimes occur 10-15 minutes and gone. This problem also not happen every days. Once the problem occur, all reports with Thai character will fail.
   However, we have another server installed the same Application, same OS level, same OS patches and same CR Oracle ODBC driver version installed on the same time as above server (the problem server). This server does not have any problems.
   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Noppadon,
Thank you for the info. If it happens randomly in their application then it's something they need to debug. Could even be in the ODBC driver.
I suggest you tell them that because it works sometimes it shows the issue is likely in their software because if it failed all the time then it would be in Crystal dll's. They need to debug the problem, suggest they use tools like Process Monitor from www.sysinternals.com to step through to see where or what part is failing. If they having logging abilities that may help to find out what step is failing and in which API.
At this point we have no way of determining where the problem is, it's failing in their application and no one but them know what or how they are using CR runtime files.
If you can duplicate the problem using Crystal Report Designer then it's our problem, if not they have to help you to show us it is a CR issue.
Sorry we can't be of more help but without know their code we can't suggest anything to try. Suggest they log a call with support here to help them debug the problem if they don't know what to do.

I wanted to find out if I can download just the oracle odbc driver and install in without actually installing oracle database or client version on windows PC.

You will need to have some Oracle software on your machine for the Oracle ODBC driver to function.
If you can use the 10g client, you can install the 10g Instant Client and the ODBC driver. The Instant Client is a minimal set of libraries that allow components like the Oracle ODBC driver to work. The 10g client, though, is not certified to connect to databases earlier than 8.1.7.
If you have to use an earlier version, you have to install the full Oracle client, which is not a small install, to be able to use the Oracle ODBC driver.

the oracle 0CI8 driver. My connection pool is creating fine, but my server is
crashing with JVM errors.

Hello,
To get the ODBC driver you should run a custom Oracle Client installation and Select
Oracle Windows Interfaces 10.2.0.1.0.
Then, you'll get the Oracle ODBC Driver 10.2.0.1.
But, be aware that Oracle didn't certify Windows 7.
So, if afterwards, you experience some trouble, think to install Oracle with Xp compatibilty mode, or
wait to Oracle 11.2.0.1 which will be certified on Windows 7.

I found out the real answer!!!
On another thread there was a link to the client 10g installation. I download that 480Meg monster. Unzipped the package and launced the setup.exe.
You can then install just the ODBC using the custom option. But, it will not install the tnsnames.ora file. If you have ever done this from a VB app, copy the tsnnames.ora over to the \network\admin folder. It's usually under the oracle\product\client\10.0.2\ folder. Once installed you can launch the ODBC administer either from the link Oracle installs or from the control panel.
Next, you need to make sure the folders where the .dll file is readable to the iis. Change the folder to add whatever permission group you use for iis (I happen to have setup a local users group {machinename\users}. Add them to the entire folder structure (check the embedded folders to ensure they are readable).
While setting up the ODBC, the TSN names will now be listed from the tsnnames.ora file (if properly located). To make the connection work, the userid should be 'userid;pwd=password'. Otherwise the connection failed for me.
Now, if your connection works okay from the odbc test connection, it will probably fail if accessing through iis (like from a .asp page). There are environment path variables that need to be set. Reboot the server for them to get set. Otherwise you will get a ODBC driver can not be loaded do to system error 1114 message.

How to install the Oracle ODBC driver for all NT users

I need to schedule a task on a SQL server running on NT to access an Oracle DB.
I have installed the Oracle ODBC driver on it and it is working well under my NT account.
But the SQL scheduler runs on another NT account and the task failed.
How is it possible to install the Oracle ODBC Driver for all NT users ???

Oracle ODBC Driver adds bind variable when browsing whole table in Access

Hi, we are looking for some reasons why we may see this behavior in the Oracle ODBC driver (10gR2 and 11g) when using Microsoft Access (2003 or 2007)...
1) Link a table from the Oracle database.
2) Double-click the newly linked table to "browse" it.
Oracle sends the following statement to the server:
{color:#0000ff}select * from linked_table where primary_key = :b1{color}
It then proceeds to read the entire table.
If I tell Microsoft Access that there is no primary key, the query gets sent as:
{color:#0000ff}select * from linked_table{color}
And the query comes back as soon as the first 100 or so rows are fetched which is quite quickly.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
1) If the table has a primary key or unique constraint, Microsoft Access automatically assigns that as the primary key.
2) We can stop the behavior in #1 if we wrap a view around it which prevents Access from discovering that information and then it prompts for a primary key definition.
3) If we use the Microsoft ODBC driver, the bind variable is not added no matter what the primary key defintiion is.
We're stumped and are looking for solutions and/or workarounds without having to wrap all of our tables in views to hide the fact that there is a primary key.

The specific question I am seeking an answer for (sorry it was not clear on my first message) is this:
Why does the Oracle driver add the bind variable to the query only when the primary key is defined?
The Microsoft ODBC driver does not add the bind variable with or without a primary key defined.
You asked how I traced this statement and what I am doing is launching the query in Access and then using TOAD to view the V$SESSION and V$SQL_TEXT_WITH_NEWLINES views. All I do is change the driver. This is just for a simple browse table (double-click on the table) which should send
select * from table
However, whenever I use the Oracle ODBC driver (with a primary key defined) it sends
select * from table where primary_key = :1
If I remove the primary key on the table definition, the Oracle driver sends
select * from table
What is it about the primary key that could cause that behavior?
I don't think it is the MDAC/Jet level because this is the conversion to the native SQL statement not the Jet version. I know the Oracle driver has to do that part because you have those workaround options like don't add the RULE hint, etc. That's not part of the Jet engine.
Hope that helps. I'm just baffled over this one and wish I knew where to go next.

Does anyone know if it is possible to return data from a "TIMESTAMP WITH TIMEZONE" column using the Oracle ODBC driver and an ADO Recordset?
I am using the Oracle driver version 10.2.0.2 and TIMESTAMP fields work fine.
I can call Recordset->Open() with a query like "SELECT * FROM TABLE" when the table contains a column of type timestamp with timezone but when I execute a statement to see if there are results as in
if (!(srcRecsetPtr->BOF && srcRecsetPtr->EndOfFile))
my application throws an unhandled exception and exits. The exception is not a COM exception and I'm not sure how to get back additional information if that's possible.
The only information I've been able to find in searching TechNet and MetaLink is that a workaround is to wrap the columns in a TO_CHAR or TO_DATE conversion first but that's not a good solution for my problem since I am executing user specified SQL which may join multiple tables.
I've found one other note that says the documentation should be corrected and that these fields are NOT supported period (Bug #4011640).
I've experimented with the Bind Timestamp as Date option in the ODBC connection and with various ALTER SESSION settings to attempt to change the NLS_TIMESTAMP_TZ_FORMAT but I have been unable to get past the problem.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I tried what you mentioned and I could connect myself via SQL*Plus without passing a password and a login, Extern authentification seems to work and my user seems to be right configurated.
But he problem goes on via ODBC. When I test connection in the ODBC Data Source Administrator of Windows XP, test fails and seems to forbid connection without userID and password. When I try to connect via ODBC in my program the same problem appears : "Unable to connect SQLSTATE=28000 [Oracle][ODBC][ORA]Ora-01017: Invalid username/password;logon denied" I could not connect in this way.. What's wrong ?

ASP pages and Oracle ODBC Driver

I have a number of ASP pages that need to be updated to connect to Oracle using the ORACLE ODBC driver. Currently, these pages connect using the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. I do not know of all the details yet as I havent seen the pages or network for which they reside on and I havent been supplied with details on version information. I would assume I am working with recent versions of all software.
What Im curious about is if anyone has done this sort of driver change before and if you have any suggestions on how I would go about doing this, or if there are things that I need to be aware of that arent evident at first glance.
Again, I am switching from the odbc driver provided by Microsoft to a version of the odbc driver provided by Oracle.

I'll assume that there is some reason that necessitates switching drivers. If there's not going to be a benefit, I'd suggest not changing.
That said, changing drivers should be relatively painless. If your ASP makes database connections using DSN's, simply go to the ODBC Data Source Administrator, rename the old Microsoft DSN, and create a new DSN using the Oracle driver with the name your ASP is looking for. If your ASP specifies the ODBC driver in its connect string, you'll have to modify all the ASP connect strings to use the Oracle driver. If all goes well, your ASP will now be up & running using the Oracle driver.
As we all know, however, reality and theory are often at odds with each other. While your ASP should be connecting to the database correctly when you make these changes, please do some thorough testing to verify that everything works like you expect. The ODBC specification permits drivers to have a variety of behaviors in certain conditions. Applications written with one ODBC driver often end up relying on one of these behaviors, and may break when the ODBC driver changes.

Oracle ODBC Driver for Rdb 2.10.11.00 on Windows 2008 64-bit

Hello,
Our application runs on Windows 2000 Professional SP4 and connects to RDB databases on Alpha Open/VMS via Oracle ODBC Driver fro Rdb release 2.10.11.00.
We are migrating to Windows Server 2008 64-bit environment.
We tested both recent Rdb ODBC driver releases (3.3.0.0 and 3.3.1.0) but we are getting errors intermittently when the application loads data from certain tables. Trace logs show no errors which could indicate the origin of the issue.
We want to use the old (2.10.11.00) release but it cannot be installed only on the Win 2008 32-bit version.
Can anyone suggest how to install the Oracle ODBC Driver for Rdb release 2.10.11.00 on a Windows 2008 64-bit Server?

Does that mean that Oracle's ODBC driver is not supported to connect to an Oracle 10g Release 2 DB?

I downloaded the gateway package of Oracle version 11.1.0.6.0, and installed Informix gateway driver. I made the necessary settings, and i have exactly the same problem, as described above.
I receive error message "OracleODBC Informix Wire Protocol driverUnsupported Informix Server version.OracleODBC Informix Wire Protocol driverInvalid attribute in connection string: ArraySize.OracleODBC Informix Wire Protocol driverInvalid attribute in connection string: TruncateOversizedColumnValues." when trying to set up a connection from Oracle to Informix 7.3. I read here, that there is a patch of Informix gateway: fix 6799360, which is unfortunately not available for for download for Windows XP. I cannot search MetaLink for this problem, because I just would like to test this Oracle feature, I did not buy Oracle license.
Does anybody know about this patch? Can anybody help how could I make working this Informix gateway?
