How to Determine the Cause of the Spinning Wheel?

I get long delays watching a spinning wheel (30 seconds to 5 minutes) when using Safari 5.0.6, which is the last version that works on the iMac PPC G5 1.8GHz (2GB RAM) with OS 10.5.8. The Activity Monitor does not provide clues as to the cause.  How can I determine what is causing them?

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up* as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions and here:  http://www.opendns.com/technology/opendns-vs-google-public-dns/ )
and further independent information can be read here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt

* as confirmed by: http://lifehacker.com/5835775/google-dns-and-opendns-users-are-getting-a-web-spe ed-boost
and Apple:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
but results may vary depending on where you are located.
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

    What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
    I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?

    I'm having a similar problem. Someone PLEASE HELP!
    I'll start with just an example of what I've been facing. During the composing of this post, when I switched from Firefox to Word, I had to wait 60 seconds before the spinning wheel stopped and I got a cursor. I then copied one set of Etrecheck results, switched back to Firefox, hit Command-v to paste and had to wait 45 seconds or so for the spinning wheel to stop. And the paste operation didn't paste until I hit Command-v again (with no wait this time).
    Here's what I've done:
    I tried three times to run a scan with avast! and all three times the scan was unable to complete.
    I restarted holding down Command-r and it found and fixed many permissions, but found no problems with files.
    I ran Etrecheck in a "Safe Boot" and in a normal startup and there were two things that were tagged as "[failed]" in the normal startup:
    Launch Agents: [failed]com.logmein.LMILaunchAgentFixer.plist Support
    User Launch Agents: [failed][email protected]
    I apologize for taking up so much space, but here are the results from both Etrecheck runs:

    I stupidly tried to copy my music files to an external drive so I could transfer them to my new iMac (old Macbook Pro is being retired). I now know I should've tried home sharing or something to transfer the music.
    Anyway, the situation I am in is that I have not managed to transfer anything and I now cannot access the music on my old Macbook Pro either! I have the message "the song 'xyz' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?". I understand that this is because iTunes cannot locate the files. When I try to locate the files I find nothing.
    I have tried searching my whole Macbook Pro for mp3 files and m4a files and Spotlight cant find any! The tracks are all still listed in iTunes. I also searched the external hard drive. I definitely haven't deleted anything. So where could they have gone and is there anything else I can do to search for them? I have a feeling I am just not searching for them in the right way because I have not deleted anything.
    Old computer is Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.4.1
    New computer is iMac OS X 10.7.2 with iTunes 10.5
    All I want to do is to set everything back to how it was so I can try the transfer a better way.
    Please help. Thanks, Dashford.

    I'm currently dealing with this issue myself, except that my rMBP has NO articles in the reading list.  It's a brand new rMBP too, purchased just this week, with the 2.6 Ghz Processor & 16GB of RAM.
    Let's see what we can find.  I may just take it back to the Apple Store.

    What makes you so sure it isn't software?
    The camera can be focused by take the point of focus on the touch screen.
    If it is new as you said, it should be under warranty. Make a Genius Bar appointment or contact Apple with a repair request.

    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
    I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
    Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • [svn:fx-trunk] 10913: Reverted my previous reversion, since the original change wasn't the cause of the Mustella breakage.

    Revision: 10913
    Author:   [email protected]
    Date:     2009-10-07 12:04:30 -0700 (Wed, 07 Oct 2009)
    Log Message:
    Reverted my previous reversion, since the original change wasn't the cause of the Mustella breakage. So once again:
    The 'lineBreak' style is now properly declared as non-inheriting.
    For a long time we've intended for it to be non-inheriting... it lives in BasicNonInheritingStyles.as! And we want it to be non-inheriting, because in TLF this format does not inherit from parent FlowElement to child FlowElement, so in Flex is should not inherit from parent UIComponent to child UIComponent. But the metadata incorrectly said inherit="yes". It now correctly says inherit="no".

  • TS2570 I have the gray screen problem with the white apple and spinning wheel

    I have the gray screen problem when it boots to the white apple and spinning wheel, but when I tried safe booting and doing the fsck thing I think I only made it worse, because it now starts, the safe mode progress bar comes on, (no matter if I press any keys or not) and after a minute shuts down again by itself. I also tried the command option, p, r thing and that did not work either, only brought me to the gray screen with the white apple, spinning wheel, and bar, and it promptly shut down. I am thinking more and more that I need the disk, but im not sure I have it. is it possible to order a new one online or is there another thing I can try? there is not an apple store nearby, and ereasing my data is not an option.
    Also Im not sure what my exact opporating system is, but I did buy and download mountainlion in August so It is pretty new

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    The hard disk is damaged. Take the Mac to an Apple Store

    I know i have a G5 in my profile but as i said in my first post of this thread im using my macbookpro dual 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM so the apogee has nothing to do with this computer.
    I ran rember last night and i woke up after 12 hours and it was still running.
    I put loops onto maximum and RAM allocation to maximum to get full testing.
    Any ideas on why its taking this long or is it normal?
    Cheers, Benji

    I investigate that some mails have not got any content-language header...
    Also, If mail is in multipart , I cannot get it throught the contentType....
    e.g some header contain header like this: content-Type: "text/html; charset=Big5"
    but some are : content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary......";
    So, how can I know the client locale?
    Thanks

    You should be able to get the charset from the content type, as u said. the reason some types don't have a charset, such as multipart/* types, is because they don't contain any content on their own! they only contain nested body parts, each of which should have a charset specified. you're gonna have to get the charset by following the mail structure recursively.

  • JSF: How to determine which element has the focus?

    Hi all,
    I have a JSP with some input fields and a text area. When I press "ENTER" the data I have entered should be saved. That works fine (I use JavaScript to catch the keyPressed-event). But when I want to insert a new line in the text area, I press ENTER too and this invokes the javascript function. So its not possible to insert a new line in the text area. And I don`t want to save the data when Im just inserting a new line.
    is it possible to determine which element has the focus at the moment of pressing ENTER? if it`s the text area then I wont save the data and inserting a new line is possible? Or how to say: "Insert an new line if the user presses SHIFT+ENTER" or something like that?
    Im using JSC for my application and this is my JS-function:
    function checkIt(evt)
    var charCode = (evt.charCode) ? evt.charCode : ((evt.which) ? evt.which : evt.keyCode);
         if (charCode == 13)
              document.getElementById('form1:bt_Save').click();
              return false;
              return true;
    Im looking for something like that:
    if(charCode == 13) {
    if(document.getElementById('form1:textArea').hasFocus())
    doNothing...
    else {
    document.getElementById('form1:bt_Save').click();
         return false;
    thanks for any help

    Hi,
    I searched through many forums (js of course too) but
    I couldnt find a solution. Everybody knows how to
    set the focus but not how to get it. We often use
    JSF/JSP with javascript and maybe somebody here has
    another approach to this problem (how to solve it
    using jsf itself or anything else)?Take easy. I just suggested to search in a JavaScript forum , in your question you didn't mentioned this. Good luck man.
    Cya.

  • How to determine output based on the content of purchase order

    Hi Gurus,
    I've a typical requirement at my present project. With vendor X we have punchout catalogs. while creation of shopping cart, we are not allowing the user to mix catalog items and non catalog items into the same shopping cart. Once the shopping cart all shopping carts are automatically coverted into PO.
    Now the challenge we are facing is, if the PO is created based on items from catalog, we want to send such PO via XML interface to the vendor. If the PO is created based of items which are free-form, we want to send such PO via Smartform email attachment.
    As this condition can only be determined at runtime, I'm finding a challenge to configure this. In both PO cases, vendor is same but the content of the PO is different. One contains all items that are catalog based and other contains items which are non catalog.
    Can someone help me find solution for this issue.
    Regards,
    Sam K

    Change Forms for Document Output
    You can use the Business Add-In BBP_OUTPUT_CHANGE_SF to override the Smart Forms that are defined in the activity Define Actions for Document Output.
    This BAdI serves as an alternative to the IMG activity Condition-Dependent Document Output.
    Note that no Smart Forms are used for output via XML.
    Standard settings
    The following parameters are available in the method CHANGE_FORMS. Depending on the input parameters, you can define other Smart Forms to output the document type.
    Importing
    IV_GUID
    Globally Unique Identifier of the document.
    IV_MEDIUM
    Output medium found for this document according to Define Actions for Document Output (print: PRN, fax: FAX, e-mail: MAI, XML: MET).
    IS_PARTNER
    Business partner to whom the document is sent.
    IV_OBJECT_TYPE
    Business transaction type.
    Changing
    CV_SMARTFORM
    Smart Form used to output the document.
    E-mail output
    Smart Form with which the document is added to the e-mail in the form of a PDF attachment.
    Note:
    Note that the BAdI with this parameter overrides the parameter form name (technical name of the Smart Form BBP_PO for example) irrespective of the defined determination technology (SRM: Purchase Order Output Determination, for example).
    CV_SMARTFORM_MAIL
    Smart Form used to define content and layout of the e-mail text in the case of e-mail output.
    CV_SUBJECT_MAIL
    Smart Form that determines the text in the (short description of the e-mail content).
    As an alternative to this BAdI, you can control document output via determination technology.
    For more information, see Condition-Dependent Document Output.

    HI Experts,
    We have a scenario where there are contract employee's which are not maintained in the system as employee but maintained as BP, now during creation of any transaction i need to determine the contract BP based on the user, in the user master we are maintaining e-mail, the same is also maintained in the BP, which is also unique, is there any ways i can dtermine the BP in the transaction, please somebody help me, this is very crtical in my project.
    Regards
    Milan

    You can always use badi. To use badi, you would have to define in partner access sequence as source COM_PARTNER_Z (Business add-in 3).
    Then you would have to create your implementation of that badi (spro>crm>basic functons>partner processing>business add-in for partner). In thet badi implement method DETERMINATION_ADD_IN_3 in which you can put whatever logic you need.
