How to fix a corrupt QuickTime file?

Hey all,
Today I recorded all of our church services via iMovie (one long 4 hour clip), as I have been doing for more than a month now. However, the guy running the camera turned the camera off before I told iMovie to stop importing, so iMovie literally trashed the file.
I pulled the 50GB file out of the trash, but now QuickTime is giving me an error: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." When I open the file in MPEG Streamclip, It says "File open error: unrecognized file type", and I click "Open Anyway". It tries to open it, but sfter 20 minutes, I get the error: "File open error: can't find video or audio tracks".
Any idea how to fix this file? (That is, outside of paying $150 for this service: http://simplemoviex.com/movierepair/repair.html .) It is not mission critical to have this file, but there was a baptism this morning that I would like to have...

Hi Janke,
If you have Time Machine or another backup system that keeps multiple versions, you may be able to work our way back to a version that does not demonstrate the corruption.

So I was recording a VERY long meeting at work and recorded it to my PC via Premiere. Since the recording was unattended, the file size is 275GB! I didn't really think anything would go wrong since I have recorded large .avi files in the past.
Well when I try to import the .avi or play it in media player, it is saying it is corrupt/wrong file format. I tried a few avi repair utilities and none of them fixed it. I'm guessing the avi headers are missing, but I thought Premiere wrote progressive .avi files (at least their export is progressive and valid while its writing).
Any help to repair salvage the avi? I only need about 50% of the actual content.

DOING while it is doing it is really not the same as trying to open a file after the fact
I have an inexpensive standalone DVD recorder to be able to move a movie from a DirecTv Tivo box in one part of the house to a DVD player in another part of the house
I can watch the video on the TV while it is playing from the DTivo box to the DVD recorder
If I do not properly CLOSE the disc when the recording is done, the DVD will not play
An improperly closed file is, as you found, not going to work
As I said, my best GUESS is that hitting the full point on the drive caused needed information to not be written to the header (or file end) and now any software you use to try and play or edit that file doesn't know what the file
IS because the identity is lost
I will guess that is also why the AVI repair programs you've tried won't work... they need to have some starting information to work, otherwise the contents of the file are just so much random "noise"

How to fix a corrupt numbers file

I had a spreadsheet in number that I tried to revert back to a previous version, when I did the file became corrupt and now unreadable. I tried to download it from the cloud and that file had already synced and came unreadable as well. Is there a way to save the spreadsheet or is it corrupt for good?

8/21/2006. How can I split a QuickTime file in two? I saved a two hour videotape converted by PYRO A/V LINK to iBook G4 combo into a file of 24.5 Gb, and I saved to QuickTime into 536 mgs. Of course, it took half a day. When I went to copy it as video (536 mgs) onto a CD of 700 mg capacity, Toast 7 said it required 1100 mgs and couldn't do it. I have QuickTime Pro, got just recently. I would be very happy to learn how to split it, so to copy each of the split pieces onto 2 CD's, for my own purposes. Many, many thanks. Chuck Yopst. Kirk, Thanks for your post Monday 8/21. Interesting how things worked out. I split the OuickTime file--of my retired uncle Church of the Brethren pastor's 50th wedding anniversary, and came up with two folders. Each contained four more folders, and inside folder Mvseg was file Avseq.dat which contained the video material and, when double clicked, started playing that half of the story on Windows 98SE. It just so happens that my uncle's PC operating system is a Windows 98SE. All this from QuickTime 7.0 which Windows 98SE would play the audio but not the video. Then a week later, yesterday in fact, in looking through iDVD help I found your solution, which heretofore I had no idea of. I had to go into System Preferences--Hardware--CDs & DVDs, and set these for "Open with 'Ask what you want to do'." The factory settings were to "open these when inserted" without that "Ask"ing. So then I was able and did follow your solution and it worked, but as a single QuickTime file, playable on Windows XP and Windows 2000 and Macintosh but not Windows 98SE. You tube video's are suddenly downloading as Quicktime movies instead of FLV's. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it? Quicktime won't play the files. I use safari and snow leopard and all updates are installed. JulieS

There are no preferences for Quicktime 10, only for QT 7.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:

Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)
For anything like Flash videos you should use QT 7.

Corrupted Quicktime files

recently our company purchased a new Intel dual quad with 4 GB ram. We are running Leopard. We have a Kona LHE Card and an AJA Break Out Box for Analog. Right away we found problems were happening but the weirdest problem we have is that everything we do with Quicktime results in corrupted files. Just a basic drag and drop from another hard drive, will result %80 of the time in a file that eitehr wont play or will play but have the pink digital static midway through for a few seconds. When we bring a completely clean Quicktime into FCP, most of the time it will then have digital corruption on one frame or another. When we go back to the original QT file it is clean. If we take a perfectly Clean QT file and try to save as or Export, we will recieve a corrupted or distorted QT File in return. Basically every time we touch a QT file something gets corrupted.

I don't know how to fix what was already modified, but in Premiere Preferences, there is a box that is checked by default, something about "Write XMP data" or similar, you'll want to uncheck that.

I have a corrupted/unreadable Quicktime file, so I can't uninstall it or reinstall a new version until I get rid of it or fix it. I'm trying to run CHKDSK, but it won't run on reboot. I went into Task Scheduler, and the log says it fails to run because of "Login failure: Unknown user name or bad password". When I go into the properties of the scheduled task, I have "Run whether user is logged in or not" selected, so I don't know what else to do...

How to fix a corrupted data usage SQLite database?

I have an iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 8.0.2 and this phone is never jailbroken.
A few months ago I noticed my data usage was not updated anymore. I tried many things to restore it. Today I hooked up my iPhone to Xcode and there it revealed the problem in the device logs:
Sep 28 13:38:01 Marcels-iPhone Preferences[331] <Warning>: CoreData: error: (11) Fatal error. The database at /var/wireless/Library/Databases/DataUsage.sqlite is corrupted. SQLite error code:11, 'database disk image is malformed'
So apparently the data usage SQLite file on my iPhone got corrupted. How on earth can I restore this database?

If you are able, try modifying or deleting the account using "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "NetInfo Manager.app" - (be careful that only the user and not the entire "users" directory is selected when you delete).
Otherwise, the output from this commands might provide more info on the state of the user records, potentially providing a clue to how to fix it (if the second field in any entry contains anything other than asterisks, don't post them):<pre>nidump passwd /</pre>Also, if the user shows up using this command, that might provide another method for referring to the user using "NetInfo" based commands:<pre>nicl . -list /users</pre>If there aren't a lot of other users on the computer, you could always reset the whole "NetInfo" database as described in the document below. Anyone know how to fix an "empty" JPEG file?

I'm fairly new to photo editing but I've been working on some photos recently that I started editing in iPhoto '09, and eight of the photos need a text caption added to them. I tried to export them to Photoshop to do this (iPhoto doesn't seem to be able to do that) and five of the photos opened perfectly. Three, however, would not open at all; Photoshop said it "could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)." And when I try to open it in Preview, it says the file is "empty." This is clearly not the case because I can see the edited photos just fine in iPhoto, I just can't open it in any other application. All the photos are from the same camera and were taken and uploaded on the same day to the same program. I really have no clue how to fix this or why it happened; I guess I could just reimport the photos straight from the camera but it would lose all the edits I did so I'd like to avoid that. If anyone knows what to do to fix this, please answer asap! Thanks!
