How to format a double to a certain precision?

Hi,
I have a variable of type 'double' and it's set to something like 2.3934583729. I was trying to print the double out to some standard system output with 2 decimal place, formatted precision, "2.39". It seems to me that there is no function like printf(".2f", var) in C/C++ that does the trick. Or am I overlooking something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Aaron

Yes you are over looking something.
Check this out...
import java.text.*;
public class TwoDigits
     public static final void main(String[] args) throws Exception
          double aDouble = 2.3934583729;
          DecimalFormat formatter = new DecimalFormat("#.00");
          System.out.println(" aDouble : " + formatter.format(aDouble));

  • Formatting a Double to 2 decimal places without first converting to String

    Hi,
    Does anyone have any clear idea on how to format a Double directly without first converting it
    to a String.I have just read through DecimalFormat/NumberFormat but I think there might be an easier way.I am also aware of printf(%f) and format(%f),but unfortunately am using Java 1.4 at the moment which does not seem to support them(will upgrade soon).The code I have is as follows:
    public void displayAnalysis ()
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("\nANALYSIS RESULTS FOR FILE " + inputFile + " \n");
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("\nString length: "+ inputText.length());
           System.out.println ("Ratio of printing to non-printing characters: "+ pRatio);
           System.out.println ("Ratio of vowels to consonants: "+ vRatio);
           System.out.println ("");
           System.out.println ("Frequency of vowels as a percentage of number of printing characters;");
           System.out.println ("Percentage of a's ="+ (NumberFormat.format(new DecimalFormat(((double)frequency[0]*100)/printable)))));
           System.out.println ("Percentage of e's ="+ ((double)frequency[1]*100)/printable + "%");
           System.out.println ("Percentage of i's ="+ ((double)frequency[2]*100)/printable + "%");
           System.out.println ("Percentage of o's ="+ ((double)frequency[3]*100)/printable + "%");
           System.out.println ("Percentage of u's ="+ ((double)frequency[4]*100)/printable + "%");
           System.out.println ("Number of whitespace characters were " + whitespace);
           System.out.println ("");
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("========================================================================");
           System.out.println ("");
           System.out.println ("");
       }I would like to display the frequencies to 2 decimal places.As a last resort I will have to alter the code to use DecimalFormat,but I'm hoping someone has a simpler solution.

    Oops,please ignore the line for the first frequency (a's),I was just playing around with trying to use NumberFormat!

  • How can I format the double value?

    Hi,
    I am trying to format the double variable as like,
    double var = 1234.56789
    but i want that variable as like var = 1234.56
    How can i do that in java?
    Please help me.
    From
    Parshuram Walunjkar

    Try something like the following, assume the variable 'd' underneath is your double value that you want to format.
    double d = 4.45678;
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getNumberInstance();
    nf.setMaximumFractionDigits(5);
    nf.setMinimumFractionDigits(5);
    String number = nf.format(d);
    Then use the string "number" for printing out.

  • How do I get System.out.format to print out doubles with the same precision

    Using the System.out.format, how do I print out the value of a double such that it looks exactly like it does if it were print from a System.out.println.
    For example, take the following code:
    double d = 12.48564734342343;
    System.out.format("d as format: %f\n", d);
    System.out.println("d as   sout: " + d);Running the code, I get:
    <font face="courier">
    d as format: 12.485647
    d as sout: 12.48564734342343
    </font>
    The precision of d has been lost.
    I could bump up the precision as follows:
    double d = 12.48564734342343;
    System.out.format("d as format: %.14f\n", d);
    System.out.println("d as   sout: " + d);That appears to work, I get:
    <font face="courier">
    d as format: 12.48564734342343
    d as sout: 12.48564734342343
    </font>
    However, that solution fails if d has a different precision, say 12.48. In that case I get:
    <font face="courier">
    d as format: 12.48000000000000
    d as sout: 12.48
    </font>
    So how do I get System.out.format to print out doubles with the same precision as System.out.println?
    Thanks..

    Interesting, but this is not what I am looking for...Your original question was "how do I print out the value of a double such that it looks exactly like it does if it were print from a System.out.println", and you've been told how to do that (although the pattern given by sabre may be a bit excessive - you should only need 15 '#'s).The initial phrase from my question was "Using the System.out.format, how do I..".
    It's worth remembering that, unlike the Format hierarchy, 'format()' is NOT native to Java. It's a convenience implementation of the 'printf()' and 'sprintf()' methods provided in C, and first appeared in Java 1.5. Those methods were designed to produced fixed-format output; 'println()' was not.Perhaps it is the case that this can't be done.
    Furthermore, Double.toString(), which is what is used by println() does not produce the same format in all cases; format("%.14f\n", d) does. TrySystem.out.println(1.8236473845783d);
    System.out.println(1823647384.5783d);and you'll see what I mean.I am fine with that. It still displays all the precision.
    I am simply looking for a way to quickly print out multiple variables on a sysout while debugging. I want it as syntactically sweet as possible. System.out.println can be a pain when outputting multiple variables like the following:
    "System.out.println("a: " + a + "; b:" + b + "; c: " + c);"
    For some reason, my fingers always typo the plus key.
    I was hoping that System.out.format would be easier,along the lines of:
    "System.out.format("a: %f, b: %f, c: %f\n", a, b, c);"
    From a syntactical sweetness point of view, it is easier. However, the %f on doubles truncates the precision. I figured there must be a way to get the full precision.
    DecimalFormat is syntactically sour for this purpose, as you need to instantiate the DecimalFormat.
    fwiw I have enjoyed reading the suggestions in this thread...

    I think the warning is very clear.
    What warning? Where do you say that this plan you suggest will lose at least some, and possibly a whole lot of metadata, plus  the original files of edited photos. This is significant dataloss. And you should warn people that this is the case.
    While your metadata and originals may not be important to you, that is not necessarily the case for other users.
    Fourthly, and last, cleaning the iPhoto library should be done at least once per year
    This is nonsense. The iPhoto Library has no need of "cleaning" and certainly not in any way that trashes a whole lot of data.
    I'm very impressed that you assess the application based on the sound of the name. It's not a common way to review applications, but I'm sure it has some merit.
    FWIW it has been recommended on this - and other - sites for many years and has proven safe and effective.

    thanks
    JoveIf I understand your question correctly you need to know the format of a .csv file for use in an Excel spreadsheet. A .csv file is a comma-delimited file so all that you need to do is write your data elements to the file with commas in between them. Having done something similar in the past, let me warn you that when Excel is reading your file, it uses some characters other than commas as field delimiters. for example, / : and ; are treated as commas. To defeat this, you will need to surround fields containing those characters in double quotes.
    Hope that helps

  • Formatting a double

    Hello,
    I have a problem with formatting a double.
    Suppose we have a double:
    double x = 25.665478962
    I want to round this to a double with 2 decimals:
    thus: x has to be 25.67
    How can I do this???
    Thanks,

    Hi Daniel,
    Do you know about the classes "java.text.DecimalFormat" and "java.lang.Math"? Are they not suitable for you? Have you seen this:

  • How to Format DataTable Column after load Datatable without extra loop ??

    How to Format Column after load Datatable without extra loop ??
    I dont want to do extra logic which can cause performance thing.
    I have datatable which get fill from Dataset after database query, now i need to format column as decimal but without extra logic.
    I was thinking to create clone and than Import row loop but it ll kill performance, its WPF application.
    Thanks
    Jumpingboy

    You cannot do any custom things at all without doing some "extra logic". Formatting a number as decimal is certainly not a performance killer in any way whatsoever though.
    If you are displaying the contents of the DataTable in a DataGrid you could specify a StringFormat in the XAML:
    <DataGrid x:Name="dg1" AutoGenerateColumns="False">
    <DataGrid.Columns>
    <DataGridTextColumn Header="Number" Binding="{Binding num, StringFormat=N2}"/>
    </DataGrid.Columns>
    </DataGrid>
    Or if you are using auto-generated columns you could handle the AutoGeneratingColumn event:
    public MainWindow() {
    InitializeComponent();
    DataTable table1 = new DataTable();
    table1.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("num")
    DataType = typeof(decimal)
    table1.Rows.Add(1.444444444444);
    table1.Rows.Add(7.444444444444);
    dg1.ItemsSource = table1.DefaultView;
    dg1.AutoGeneratingColumn += dg1_AutoGeneratingColumn;
    void dg1_AutoGeneratingColumn(object sender, DataGridAutoGeneratingColumnEventArgs e) {
    if (e.PropertyName == "num") {
    DataGridTextColumn column = e.Column as DataGridTextColumn;
    column.Binding.StringFormat = "N2";
    <DataGrid x:Name="dg1" />

  • How to format new hard drive for Apple TV when you can't use old HD

    I need to know how to format a new HD to install in my Apple TV where I can't use the old HD to clone or otherwise create the new structure on the new HD.
    I have an Apple TV that was syncing to a Mac Mini that had a defective HD and logic board. I was unable to backup the Apple TV to the Mac Mini for some time before I had the mini repaired by AppleCare.
    When the mini came back, it registered on the Apple TV as a new computer and I couldn't sync with it without losing hundreds of dollars of content.
    All was okay until the other night when Apple's defective update for the ATV erased ALL my content. I updated it to 3.1 this morning, which Apple indicated might fix the problem. It didn't. The old content is all gone.
    My ATV is out of warranty, so I removed the old HD and copied the files from the "Purchased" folder to my mini. That saved most 101 items that I purchased since 12/08 (but not all for some reason). I lost all content prior to 12/08 that I purchased, as well as some content since 12/08 that I purchased.
    I need to keep the old HD untouched until I can purchase data recovery software. I'd like to just put a spare IDE HD in that I have into the ATV and just start over with what is in my Mac mini iTunes.
    So, how does one do that? I'm not gifted with vast Unix knowledge or experience and I don't want to clone the old HD and risk losing more data if it writes to the HD for some reason.
    Thanks.

    Hi Atagahi,
    Firstly, have you emailed Apple iTunes support indicating your issue? There have been instances in which Apple will allow re-downloading of all content you've purchased on the iTunes store.
    Secondly, I highly recommend you get an external usb hard drive, attach it to your mini and use it as a Time Machine drive to keep your iTunes purchases safe. It's a fact of life that all hard disk drives will eventually fail. The Apple TV should never be used as any kind of permanent storage space; think of it as a 'temporary holding' zone. And as you've unfortunately already experienced, a glitch wiped out all content on the Apple TV.
    As regards your original question, it seems like there have been folks who've done just that...taken the internal drive in the Apple TV out and attached it to a mac and copied files from the Apple TV hard drive. I have not had to do such, so I cannot offer any help here except for Linda's suggestion on googling the net for solutions.
    Good luck and hope you get all your purchased content back Atagahi!

  • Can someone please tell me how to format a new disk to ZFS format?

    I have a Sun v240 with Solaris 10 update 8 installed on a single 73GB harddisk. Everything is working fine. I just purchased a another identical harddisk online. I plugged the disk into my v240 and ran 'devfsadm' and solaris found the new disk. I want to add this disk to my existing ZFS pool as a mirror. However, this disk was originally formatted with a UFS file system. So when I run:
    zpool attach rpool c1t0d0 c1t1d0I get:
    /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 contains a ufs filesystem.I understand the error message but I don't know how to format the disk to have a ZFS file system instead. Note that I am extremely new to Solaris, ZFS, and pretty much everything Sun - I bought this server on eBay so that I could learn more about it. It's been pretty fun so far but need some help here and there.
    For some reason I can't find a single hit on Google telling me how to just simply format a disk to ZFS. Can I use the 'format' command? Maybe you don't "format" disks for ZFS? I have no idea. I might not have the right terminology. If so, apologies. Can anyone help me on this?
    Thanks a lot! =D

    Yes, you were right. The partitions were totally different. Here is what I saw:

I also shutdown the server to the OpenBoot prompt and booted off of the new disk and it worked! Also, my bootup time to login has drastically decreased - I would say it's about half the time it was before I added the mirror disk. So I believe the server is properly reading from both disks simultaneously in order to get better bandwidth. Cool! :)
