How to GC a static ref to an object

If I had an object reference itself, will it ever be GC'ed?
In the following example, will "a" ever be GC'ed?
public class RunMe {
  public static void main(String[] args) {
    Test a = Test.getInstance();
    a = null;
public class Test {
  public static Test getInstance() {
    if(myInstance == null)myInstance = new Test();
    return myInstance;
  private static Test myInstance = null;
}

Well dear, you can write some code to see for yourself:
public class StaticTest{
  public static void main (String args[]){
    StaticClass s = StaticClass.getInstance(); //get instance
    System.out.println(s.getCount());
    s = null; //no references to the object exist
    System.gc(); //should run the collector
    s = StaticClass.getInstance(); //get instance again
    System.out.println(s.getCount());
public class StaticClass{
  private static StaticClass singleton = new StaticClass();
  private int count;
  public static StaticClass getInstance(){
    singleton.count++; //increment count
    return singleton;
  private StaticClass(){
    count  = 0;
  public int getCount(){
    return count;
}See dear? Run this and y' should get the output:
1
2
Seems that the static class is only collected when the JVM exits, even though no references to it remain in other classes.
It's a bit like that rotten pile of unidentifiable substance that always sticks to the bottom of your bin after rubbish day, it only truly lets go when y' hose it off. Horrible.

  • JUNIT : how to call static methods through mock objects.

    Hi,
    I am writing unit test cases for an action class. The method which i want to test calls one static method of a helper class. Though I create mock of that helper class, but I am not able to call the static methods through the mock object as the methods are static. So the control of my test case goes to that static method and again that static method calls two or more different static methods. So by this I am testing the entire flow instead of testing the unit of code of the action class. So it can't be called as unit test ?
    Can any one suggest me that how can I call static methods through mock objects.

    The OP's problem is that the object under test calls a static method of a helper class, for which he wants to provide a mock class
    Hence, he must break the code under test to call the mock class instead of the regular helper class (because static methods are not polymorphic)
    that wouldn't have happened if this helper class had been coded to interfaces rather than static methods
    instead of :
    public class Helper() {
        public static void getSomeHelp();
    public class MockHelper() {
        public static void getSomeHelp();
    }do :
    public class ClassUnderTest {
        private Helper helper;
        public void methodUnderTest() {  // unchanged
            helper.getSomeHelp();
    public interface Helper {
        public void getSomeHelp();
    public class HelperImpl implements Helper {
        public void getSomeHelp() {
            // actual implementation
    public class MockHelper implements Helper {
        public void getSomeHelp() {
            // mock implementation
    }

  • How to setup a static IP for a wireless printer

    This problem has been ongoing for several versions of OS X and the last five printers I've had and I'm finally over messing with it.  For some reson, when using a wireless printer with OS X this is a repetetive problem, and I think if I configured the printer to a static IP address instead of using DHCP, it might work better.  At least once a week, if not more often, I'll print something and get the ubiquitous Dock error of "Printer is not connected".  The printer is still in Preferences, but if I delete it, then it doesn't show up as it should for selection.
    The only way to fix this is reboot, and then the printer shows up again in Preferences.  I select it and all is well again...until a few days pass and the same thing happens again.  Using an HP LaserJet P1102w, still a current model, but it doesn't matter which printer I use.  I also have an Epson Artisan 725 and the same thing happens with it about once a week.  Also, this happens from both my Mac and my wife's Mac, so it's not an issue with just my machine.
    I've searched for documentation on how to setup a static IP address for a wireless printer with the Airport Extreme, but all I find are tutorials on how to do it with an ethernet hard-wired printer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You could set up your router to do manual assignment of IP address instead of using DHCP, but that is a PITA, because then you'd have to manually set up IP for all your devices.
    If you have AirPOrt Extreme, you could do this:
    In your Apple TV, go to the Settings >> About and write down the MAC address of your ATV
    Start up the AiPort Admin Utility
    Go to Network tab
    click + in the DHCP reservations
    Choose an IP you want for your ATV & Enter the MAC address
    From now on, this IP address will be reserved to the MAC address and only your ATV will be able to get it, no other device will.
    It is not a static IP in a true sense, but behaves just like one.
    Works great for me...
    If you don't have a AP Extreme, I'm sure other routers will allow you do reservations too.

  • How to setup a static multicast ARP entry with Cisco SF300-08?

    We're running a cluster in multicast mode as a  loadbalancer.
    We have Cisco SF300-08 and when we adding a static ARP entry results in an error message telling the user that the hardware address needs to be a valid  unicast MAC address.
    So how to setup a static multicast in Cisco SF300 or maybe someone know other solution to setup multicastes mode in Cisco SF300.

    Hi, Tom!
    We have two watchguard xtm505(cluster active-active) in our network. Watchguard interfaces have one ip and one mac adresses. IP 192.168.111.1(Unicast) and MAC 01:00:5e:02:02:03(multicast).  Cisco SF300 is router to outside networks(to internet). Cisco IP adresss is 192.168.111.254. There are another some hosts in this network.
    Ping from hosts to 192.168.111.254 works well. Ping from hosts to 192.168.111.1 works well too.  But there is no ping from watchguard cluster(192.168.111.1) to Cisco(192.168.111.254). And there is no routing to internet
    This is well-known situation. We need to do following(example for cisco 3750):
    1.    Start the Cisco 3750 command line interface.
    2.    Add a static ARP entry for the multicast MAC address of the FireCluster interface.
    Type this command:
    arp arpa
    For this example, type:
    arp 192.168.111.1 01:00:5e:02:02:03 arpa
    3.    Add an entry to the MAC address table.
    Type this command:
    mac-address-table static vlan interface <#>
    For this example, type:
    mac-address-table static 01:00:5e:02:02:03 vlan 1 interface gi1/0/11
    But we can't add arp entry on Cisco SF300. CLI tells us "MAC address illegal"!
    We tried enable igmp snooping, but is not helps.
    Could you tell more detailed about MAC groups?

  • How to use the static lib of berkeleydb in VC6?

    I know there is a libdb45s.lib. But when I try to link my project to it, VC6 reports many errors. Even the getting start examples cannot link correctly. The documents coming with berkeley db do not tell me how to link project to the lib, no matter static or dynamic.
    Could anyone tell me how to use the static lib libdb45s.lib and how to link it properly?
    OS: Windows XP pro SP2
    IDE: Virsual C++ 6.0 sp6
    BDB: 4.5.20
    Here is what I have done to link the libdb45s.lib:
    1.Add BDB related diretorys to VC6 link/lib dirs
    2.Add #include <db.c> to my .cpp file, I use the C API
    3.Change Project Options
    Link-> Libs/Objects-> add "libdb45s.lib"
    C/C++-> code generation-> Use Run Time Library-> MutiThreaded
    Link-> Ignore Library-> MSVCRT
    4.Build, here is the output, hope it would be some help:

  • How to refer to other objects?

    Greetings,
    I'm not sure how objects should refer to other objects.
    Example:
    Class Automobile needs to refer to objects from other classes, namely to tires, color, motor and company.
    So, the way I would do this in C++ or VB is to store all tire, color, motor and company objects into arrays and then store Integer ids in class automobile refering to the index. Like
    tiresId
    colorId
    motorId
    companyId
    So if I would like to know the name of the company of this automobile, I would have to do the following:
    company(automobile.getCompanyId).name
    I'm not sure however if this is the right OOP-Way of doing it. Should I rather put object references into class automobile instead so that I would only have to
    automobile.getCompany ?
    The problem I have with this solution is that I have to read and store the automobile data into files and while it's pretty easy to store an integer-id I'm not sure on how to store object references. They are a little "obscure" to me on this point.
    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    if you just want to save the type of company, color and so on for every automobile, i think integer ID is a good way,
    similar to the existing Color-class with constants:
    Color.BLACK, Color.RED, ..
    the way with references would also work, then all referenced objects will be saved too,

  • LOV How to create a static list

    Hi, I need to create a static LOV in Compensation Workbench in the Employee Allocations table. The static LOV will contain only 4 values.
    Can someone help me by providing detailed instructions on how to create the static LOV.
    Thanks.

    What is the data source for the 4 static values you are looking to use in LOV?
    If you are looking to add this LOV on a seeded page, then I will suggest to go through personalization and customization section of OAF dev guide. Searching through the threads will also give you enough idea to proceed.

  • How to add a static route permanently in Lion

    Hi, pls help to fix the problem.
    How to add a static route permanently in Lion.
    All methods for previous MAC OS are not working

    Hi,
    Not sure if you have fixed this, but I'd use launchd to create the route on startup.
    If you create a text file in /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.imac.route.plist
    with:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
      <key>Label</key>
      <string>local.imac.route</string>
      <key>OnDemand</key>
      <false/>
      <key>ProgramArguments</key>
      <array>
      <string>route</string>
      <string>add</string>
      <string>224.0.0.0/4</string>
      <string>[GATEWAY]</string>
      </array>
      <key>KeepAlive</key>
      <false/>
      <key>RunAtLoad</key>
      <true/>
      <key>ServiceIPC</key>
      <false/>
      <key>UserName</key>
      <string>root</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    You need to replace [GATEWAY] with the IP address of the gateway to use like 10.11.12.13
    Then as root (login as an admin user and use "sudo su -" to become root) type:
    launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.imac.route.plist
    You should be up and running.

  • How to pass PL/SQL ref cursor to Access DB

    We have a package in Oracle with a stored procedure in it. This procedure has a ref cursor that returns a value from table in Oracle.
    How can we pass this ref cursor to our tables in Access?

    The same way you pass any other parameter to Access. I don't know enough enough about Access to answer the specific question, but you'll find oodles of samples for working with ref cursors and ODBC/ASP/OCI/MFC over at Tom Kyte's place.

  • How to set a Static IP Address to a HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m?

    Like it says up in the subject, I need to know how to do this. I tried to do it by typing in the IP of the printer into a browser, but then I lost connectivity with it all together. If someone could help, that would be amazing!!
    Thanks in advance!
    TechGirl88

    First, let's see if your printer is actually connected to your network.
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.  If it is 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.x.x then the printer is not connected.  You will have to re-connect it using the same method you did originally.
    Now that it is connected, this is how to set a static IP:
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings. (if this does not work, you likely have a firewall and/or security system blocking it - please advise).
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). If you do not know this, enter the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank. Click 'Apply'
    Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
    After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
    Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • How can i compare the values of the objects in a class?

    hi ,
    i am testing how to test the values of the two objects
    this is the code i have return below.....
    class Sample{
              String name;
              int age;
              Sample(String name,int age){

                   Sample one = new Sample("cat",20);
                   Sample two = new Sample("cat",20);
    how can i test that object one and two are equal.
    can anyone clarify me about this?

    hansbig wrote:
    Um, this part doesn't work, it will never return true.

    It will :) try for example objectOne.equals(objectOne); and add a System.out.println() at that part. It will return there.
    >
    but this part, woah dude, that's some pretty slick code you got here:
    I couldn't figure out how to do the compare inside the class, but I think I see how this works.
    Not sure how I would do it for an object with more than one value to check though.
        if (obj instanceof EqualsExample) {               //Not the best implementation considering possible subclasses but the easiest.
    EqualsExample temp = (EqualsExample) obj;
    return (this.name.equals(temp.name)); //Always use the equals function when comparing strings!
    } else {
    return false;
    You could add them in one massive return (this.something == temp.something && etc). Or you could split it in a series of if statements. It's really dependant on what kind of variables there are in your class.
    Maybe you have an ArrayList you need to compare but also an id. then it would make more sense to check the id first and then possibly loop through the arraylist.
    Hope it's a bit more clear :)

  • Refer to an object in Edge from an onclick="" in a .html file loaded into an iFrame in the animation

    HI, I am trying to figure out the Edge hierachies by stumbling my way through coding reference attempts. I've hit a wall...
    How can I refer to an object and a global function in my Edge animation from an onclick=""  located in an .html file loaded into an iFrame created within the master/parent Edge animation. Here's what I have...
    My main index.html is an Edge animation. One object <div> is a box created within Edge. I have added an iFrame with the Edge code:
    sym.$("MenuPanelScreen").html('<iframe src="list_images_cemetery.html" width="267" height="670" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation"></iframe>');
    That .html file which loads into the iframe within the animation contains thumbnails in <a> tags and contain onclick="" statements that should call a function within the Edge file.
    Eventually, I want the statements to read something like... onclick="changePic('Dragon.jpg', 'The Dragon', 'Saint and Worm')"
    However, I had no idea how to reference the changePic() function in the Edge animation. So, just to figure out how to reference the parent animation from an html in an iFrame, I change the onclick="" statements to...
    <a onclick="alert('Try to hide Nameplate'); sym.$('NamePlate_sym').hide();" >  <img src="gallery/TheyGaveUpTheirDead.jpg" width="80" alt="Angel and Worm" /></a>
    I first wanted to see if I could hide an Edge Symbol or div/element from the child html. I tried the following...
    onclick="alert('Try to hide Nameplate'); sym.$('NamePlate_sym', window.parent.document).hide();"
    I tried a few other variations that I won't bore you with. Can someone help me with the proper reference to effect an Edge element?
    Furthermore, I eventually wnat the onclick="" statement to reference a global function on attached to the Edge stage in the compositionReady event of the stage. The function is...
    window.changePic=function(myFileCurr, myLabelCurr, myDescriptionCurr) {
    alert("in changePick");
      document.getElementById("myImage").src="gallery/"+myFileCurr;
      document.getElementById("myImageLabel").innerHTML=myLabelCurr;
      document.getElementById("myImageDescr").innerHTML=myDescriptionCurr;
    I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Please forgive my ignorance. i am just getting back into coding and learning the intricacies of Jscript and jQuery. Thanks!

    Hi again Elaine,
    I actually had some success after many attempts with using your code. I can control the .stop() and .play() of the "NamePlate_sym" symbol. Yet, I am still having trouble doing anything else with it. I cannot .hide() it, nor use .html("Change text") on another element on the stage called"Rectangle". If I can accomplish that and all a global function on the stage, I'm in good shape.
    I placed the following script in the header of the .html file that gets loaded into the iFrame within the Edge composition:
      <script type="text/javascript">
       window.parent.AdobeEdge.bootstrapCallback(function(compId) {
       comp = window.parent.AdobeEdge.getComposition(compId).getStage();
       alert("CompID is "+compId);
       var symbol = document.createElement('div');
       symbol.innerHTML = 'Rotate';
       symbol.style.cssText = 'background-color:#fea; width: 50px; text-align: center;';
       symbol.style.cursor = 'pointer';
       symbol.onclick = function() {
        if (comp.getSymbol("NamePlate_sym").isPlaying()) {
         comp.getSymbol("NamePlate_sym").stop();
        else {
         comp.getSymbol("NamePlate_sym").play();
       window.parent.document.body.appendChild(symbol);
            </script>
    Once I put window.parent. in the first two lines of code and the last, my test worked. As I mentioned earlier though, I still can't get the syntax correct to .hide() an element (i.e. comp.getSymbol("NamePlate_sym").hide(); does not work), or more importantly, change the innerHTML value of an element on the stage. The code either does nothing or freezes.
    Thanks... Tommy
