Lower Brightness and turn wifi off when not in use, and close out apps that aren't in use and running in the background by hitting Home twice and then holding down the running application until it wiggles in the bottom toolbar that will pop up, then hit the x at the left of the application to close it out

Did you purchase this device from Apple or an authorized reseller? It sounds as if you had a device that was jailbroken/hacked to operate on your carrier. Upon updating the iOS, it is now locked back to the original carrier the device was locked to.
Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize an unlock. You will need to make contact with that carrier and see if they provide unlocking services, and if they do, if you qualify for an unlock. Otherwise, you are out of luck. One that carrier can take care of the unlocking.

How have you managed to get apps on your phone that are tied to a different and unknown AppleID?
If these apps were not purchased by you, having them is effectively software piracy and you should purchase them using your own AppleID if you want to keep hem.

You are able to activate an old device and process an insurance claim for your iPhone 4s within 60days from the incident date. Keep in mind if the old phone is not a smartphone and you currently have unlimited data that feature will fall off. If you have a tier data plan no changes will be made. An alternate method is Accessibility Settings when connected to iTunes. You should be able to turn it off there. I would also check out some of the answers listed to the right of this post and see if they can help.

You cannot return to previous state. The update re-locked the iPhone
to the original carrier. You must contact the original carrier to see if
they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?
Be advised that if your iPhone had previously been hacked/modified/
jailbroken to work with other than original carrier, it may be impossible
for the original carrier to unlock it properly.

It sounds like you may have a group of contacts hidden. While in the Contacts app, tap Groups > Show All Contacts. Take a look at the User Guide below for more information.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!

My 5S just started doing this on Thursday: every fraction of a second or so it oscillates between connecting and disconnecting with the charger (USB or wall, doesn't matter). Since it's still under the limited warrantee, I took it to the local Mac dealer (I live in a small town w/out an Apple store) and they shipped it off. I'm waiting now for the replacement--telephonless, too!
What concerns me is that many people seem to be having this issue.
You were right to be suspicious of the Apple store employees. Once they replicated the behavior that you experienced, they should have immediatly offered to exchange your phone. Anything else, in my opinion, is unacceptable. As long as your phone is still doing it, I'd go back, ask for the manager and tell them to exchange your phone.

The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...

If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
