How to keep a SimpleShare NAS drive mounted?

I've got a SimpleShare NAS drive on my network that I use for backups and large file storage. When I login I have an Applescript that mounts the drive for me. However, the drive does not stay mounted, it simply disappears. I can not detect a pattern in the disappearance such as always after waking from sleep.
Is there something I can do to keep it mounted? Because when it disappears my automatated backups hang waiting for it to be mounted.
Is the only solution to write an Applescript that periodically checks to see if it is mounted and if it isn't, mounts it?
1.8 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   SimpleShare NAS

that should not make a difference since OSX just disconnects drives when you put it to sleep or whatever... its just how the system works.
You can add an apple script to your login sequence though to automatically reconnect. You can most likely use the script you use now to do that.
just add it to your login items list in config > accounts > login items...

  • Setting up Simpleshare NAS Drive with Airport Extreme

I've had an Airport Extreme wireless network used by all my Macs for a number of years now. As far as I've been able to see there is basically no security enabled and it should be playing nice with everything.
    However....
I just purchased two SimpleTech SimpleShare NAS drives (one for myself and another for a friend) and have tried both on my home network (one at a time) but no luck at all.
When I use the recommended way to connect to the drive "Cmd K and enter smb://Simpleshare" I keep getting told 'could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct." If I go through the Network Browser it claims "the alias cannot be found..." I've discovered the actual IP being used by the drive and tried directly entering it but no luck.
These drives are Mac compatible and should basically be plug and play, however, something on my Mac or the Airport or preventing the drive and my Mac Book Pro (10.4.8) from communicating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!!

Michael Miller of SimpleTech emailed me back the following and it has fixed my problems once and for all. I accessed the drive via Safari and the IP address of the NAS drive and then installed a new firmware update (that is not available on their website drive page yet) and rebooted the machine and viola! it works.
Please try typing smb://simpleshare/config. If you can get into that, then loading the new firmware I’ve listed below should correct the additional problems you are experiencing.
Here is a link to the 1.09 firmware. Load this firmware and RESET your drive to complete the fix.
    http://www.simpletech.com/support/downloads/firmware/simpleshare/simpleshare-1-0 9.trx
Installation instructions for the firmware can be found at this link:
    http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_faq-simpleshare.php#Q12
When the blue light returns, after loading the firmware, please RESET the drive. To RESET you will need a paperclip or similar. Press and hold the RESET button for 10sec, rear of the simpleshare beneath the power button. When the blue light returns again you should be able to run NasFinder and map the drive successfully.
Listed below are the changes in the new 1.09 firmware. If you prefer to use the older 1.07 firmware you can reload it at this time.

  • How do I copy one NAS drive to another, incrementally?

Hello - I have two 1tb Network Attached Storage devices on my Apple network.
I'm unsure how to make one a backup copy of the other. Tools used for cloning the Macintosh HD to a backup device (like Carbon Copy, Super Duper, Time Machine, Apple backup etc.) don't seem to allow me to make a copy of a NAS drive on a second NAS drive.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can do this please?
    David.

Sorry to butt in, but could you explain this to me please. Typing rsync into the finder on my desktop finds no results. Is this a way of copying files without overwriting the files that are already the same?

  • Keep NAS Drive mounted after logout?

Not sure if this is possible but I would like to logout of the server but still have the NAS mounted so retrospect can run the backups.
I know you can use cocktail to enable external drives to stay mounted but this seems to only apply to attached drives like firewire, not NAS, is this right?

Cheers for the reply, I am connecting using AFP, it is a Lacie Big Disk and I think it does support NFS so I'll give that a go.
The reason I don't have it directly attached is for extra security, I keep the Backup drives away from the server, though we are in the process of organising an offsite system so this may not be such an issue then.

  • Unable to trap error on NAS drive mount failure

Following script works fine when NAS is on network but unmounted but fails to trap error when NAS not on network (it's on a wireless connection that drops out in heavy snow).
I want to build a loop so that it tries to bring up the drive every few minutes but can't prevent the error: "Connection failed. Server may not exist or is not operational at this time....... OK"
    Any ideas why?
-- Connect to Remote Backup NAS
    tell application "Finder"
    set disk_names to list disks
    if disk_names contains "dbqwbackup" then
display dialog "Backup Drive dbqwbackup connected" buttons "Connected" default button "Connected" giving up after 4
    else
display dialog "Mounting dbqwbackup" buttons "Mount Drive" default button "Mount Drive" giving up after 3
    try
    with timeout of 250 seconds
    mount volume "afp://192.168.0.18/dbqwbackup"
    end timeout
display dialog "Backup Drive dbqwbackup connected" buttons "Connected" default button "Connected" giving up after 4
    on error error_message number error_number
    display dialog error_message & return & error_number with icon 2 giving up after 10
    return
    end try
    end if
    end tell

I had the same problem. I found out that a +tell application "Finder"+ block around the +mount volume+ command make the +with timeout+ to work just fine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using a Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the Airport Extreme 802.11n

I used the Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the previous Airport Extreme. I just upgraded to the new Airport Extreme and cannot get it to work. Buffalo support, after a two hour wait and and a 40 minute conversation, decided that it wouldn't work. If it worked on the older Airport Express, I think it should work on this one.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this NAS drive hooked up to the Router?
    Thanks,

  • CS3, mac, now opens my NAS drive upon startup of DW

Just wiped my macbook clean, and did a brand new fresh
install of OSX, and my new CS3 Design Premium. Now, when I open
Dreamweaver, my NAS drive mounts ever time. Makes no sense. Why
    would this be?

answered it myself. I went to PReferences, Preview in Browser
tab...I deleted the 3 default browsers. Quit, restarted, and the
NAS drive did not mount. Weird.

  • NAS drive won't allow drag/n/drop in 10.5, will in 10.4 though....

I am running OSX 10.5.8 on my imac and have just installed a macally nas drive. The drive works perfectly on our pc running vista, and my older macs running osx 10.4.8 and 10.3, but on my imac (10.5.8) I can't drag'n'drop or save files that I open on the network drive (it says I don't have sufficient privileges). Macally says it's a problem with OSX 10.5+ (they say the only way to successfully do it is to use FTP!) but I know the lacie nas works with 10.5+ so what gives?
Can anyone tell me how I can get the NAS drive/mac to play nicely together and allow me to drag'n'drop and save files I've opened on the nas?

First off, software can not cause hardware to fail.
Lower RAM slot failure is a common issue not because of software issues, but rather because memory is unaware of bus slewing issues with energy saver power requirements. Secondly, the lower RAM slot of these machines was extremely hard to properly align the RAM right in the slot, making it easy to misplace the RAM during the installation process, thus short or damage teh slot. See my FAQ on bad RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
You should be able to open the drive, and insert it inside another inexpensive hard drive case that is known to be compatible such as those by http://www.macsales.com/
Unfortunately, recently LaCie has had some hard drive interface converters which have not caught up with spec changes in the operating system, meaning their external drives sometimes need a firmware update. The only company that has been able to consistently avoid firmware updates is http://www.macsales.com/ This problem has plagued Firewire hard drives since the release of 10.3, and possibly earlier at as mentioned on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
If inserting the drive in another case does not solve issues, Prosoft Data Rescue, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang's Boomerang and a second drive at least as large as the one to be recovered can sometimes extract information from a flakey hard drive. In event that doesn't work, then data recovery specialist is the only option.
In the future always backup your data and never let there be less than two copies of your data at anytime*:

  • IMac keeps trying to connect to a NAS drive that I have turned off.

I couldn't find any other thread on this so:
I have a NAS drive (Buffalo Linkstation) on my network at home. I only use it for photos and music storage so turn it off when not in use (the auto setting doesn't work so this is the only option).
Only problem is when it's off my Mac keeps telling me "there's a problem connecting to the server......". Every time I hit OK, it reappears 15-20 seconds later.
As you can imagine it gets pretty annoying. I cannot beleive there isn't an 'ignore' or 'dont show again' setting for option this.
Anyone know how to disable it? I don't really want to remove the drive from my shared network, I just want to get rid of the message popping up all the time.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I have other Volumes set to be Mounted when the iMac is started listed in System Preferences> Users and Groups > Login item for My account
Obviously they can be in /Library/StartupItems for everyone to see.
I also have an app called muCommander that is likely to do it if I used the Mac User Account > Login items or the Start Up items method. (I do have a NAS drive here as well).

  • I have transfered my library my library to a NAS drive. How do I stop Itunes from creating the default folder on the local drive?

I've transferred my Itunes Media Library to a NAS drive, and pointed Itunes (using the advanced preferences tab) to the relevant folder on the NAS drive. I have done this to free up disk space on a computer I primarily use for work but which I use both at home and at work. The NAS drive is at home. (To clarify, I am not expecting Itunes to function at work, only at home when access to the NAS drive is available).
Under certain circumstances Itunes will start-up at work and when it does it will create the folder structure for the Itunes Media Library in the default location (on the local drive) instead of looking for the location I have specified (the NAS drive) which it should not be able to find when I am at work and telling me that it can't find it (which would be fine).
How do I stop Itunes from recreating the default folder structure and defaulting the file path to the standard media library location on my local drive? Every time this happens I have to re-point Itunes to the NAS drive location, which often requires me to reconsolicate libraries which is tedious and time consuming. It seems that in the process of one of these consolidations I have lost some of the media files. They are still in the library (ie. visible in the Itunes window) but Itunes can't find the media associated with that file - identifying them with an excamation mark "!".
Any help with this would be appreciated, as I have read several forums and threads, and despite trying several different approaches I have been unable to address the problem, which appears to be exacerbated by the laptop being remote from the NAS drive.

    angelofromnsw wrote:
Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them? I'm thinking that if the library file is only available at home then the ITunes library won't get corrupted at work when it can't find the media, in the event that I accidentally start up itunes eg. while opening an attachment or disc that can be read by Itunes.
iTunes will start up and you will have an empty library.
Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them?
    Yes.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the NAS.
Move the /iTunes media/ folder currently on the NAS into  the /iTunes/ folder you just copied to the NAS.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the NAS.
You can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal drive.
If you launch iTunes while NOT comnnected to the NAS, iTunes will recreate the /Music/iTunes/ folder and you will have an empty library.
WHen you are again connected to the NAS, just do step 4 above.
Do you know what the advantages and disadvantages are of having the database files like the ".itl" files stored locally versus on the NAS?
Keeping everyhing together inside the iTunes folder makes it "cleaner" and simpler to manage everything.

  • How to backup NAS Drive to Time Machine

My iMac, early 2009 model has a 1TB HDD which is now full with a few GB to spare, but not enough for any kind of video edited etc.
So, I purchased a NAS drive to use as an external storage device, so I can move and free up disk space on the iMac..... An other reason why I got a NAS drive instead of a regular external drive was because the WD My Cloud let's me create my own Cloud storage and also stream audio, image and video files directly to my TV, eliminating the need for an Apple TV or to keep my iMac/iTunes turned on.
Anyways, my issue is, I need Time Machine to backup my NAS drive and I don't know how to do this. Because once, I delete the files off my iMac, TM will not be making any future backups of the files I've moved.
There has to be a solution, any script/software? Any commands I can enter into Terminal for TM to see and backup my NAS?
ONLY IF, it was easy as upgrading the iMac ram, to upgrade the Hard Drive, I would have upgraded the internal HDD instead.
    Please help, urgent.
    Thanks in advance.

My question now is, is it worth keeping the NAS My Cloud drive and backing up My Book to the NAS My Cloud drive instead of to Time Capsule ?
Or shall I just stick to backing up to TC ?
This is more an opinion question.. IMHO the WD MyCloud will not be as reliable as the TC.
Apple build stuff with lots of tricky bits and one of those tricky bits is when you try to use non-apple products they simply have more issues.. Apple do not support TM to a WD mycloud.. they support it to a TC.
If you want reliable backups.. use CCC to the MyCloud or the TC.. that is not a problem.
Or use Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
If I needed to recover a file, I would use the TM backup.
If I lost a disk, I would use the CCC backup to restore it.
They are different.. they have different strengths and for reliability with Mavericks in particular.. I would rate CCC as top of the class and TM as the dunce in the corner.
So IMHO for the $40 cost of CCC I would do both. It is not hard.. nor expensive.. and if your data is at all valuable to you.. the extra cost is fairly small. You already have all the hardware.

  • How can I improve NFSv3 file performance with MythTV thru a NAS Drive?

Basically, I have both my MythTV combined frontend/backend machine and a NAS Drive connected via gigabit ethernet connections.
The NAS drive stores my recordings, shared via NFSv3 (because that's all the NAS drive came with, unfortunatly).
Now, my problem is that I can record or watch multiple *seperate* HD files simultaneously, travelling back and forth from the NAS without problem.
However when I try to watch the same file *While it's still being recorded*, after around 20 minutes the network connection is full/overloaded (between the mythserver and the NAS drive) and playback grinds to a halt (It doesn't stop the recording, just the playback).
It used to happen much quicker when I was only using a 100mb connection.
As i've said, this doesn't happen at ALL with seperate files, just only if i watch the *same* file that's being recorded at the same time.
Is there anyway (bar just having the recordings on a Hard Drive within my backend) that I can stop this problem? Is it because I use NFSv3 on the NAS drive? are there any options I can change in the /etc/exports file on the NAS drive that would help? Thanks
If you want me to post what my NAS drive (Readynas Duo V2) has in its /etc/exports file, I will

Post the file but I dunno how many Archer are using NFSv3... ;/

  • How do I use Time Machine with a NAS drive?

I was hoping to use a USB drive with my new Netgear router to do Time Machine backups, but I have since learned that the router only supports Windows or FAT formatted drives.
Will a NAS drive work with Time Machine?  If so, can someone give me a crash course on how to set one up and use it?
    Thanks!
For the record, I have a Netgear N300 DSL Modem/Router combo, and I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro.
Here are links to two drives I was looking at:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136745  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165198

I don't think Time Machine is supported on anything other than Time Capsule. That being said, TM works fine on my WD 2TB MyBookLive NAS. The specs on the one I bought specifically said it would work with TM. Neither one of the links you posted mentioned TM so I would be leary.

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

  • How to move itunes library from winXP to NAS drive

Can someone point me to a location that has intructions on how to offload
my Itunes library from my XP PC to my IOMEGA media center NAS drive? I've
searched quite a bit and haven't been able to find a comlete set of intructions
yet. Just trying to free up disk space on my desktop. It gets a bit confusing sometimes when they mention music files and library files. To me, they are one in the same, but I think they are not. Would be nice if there was a flow chart of
how Itunes works and what each file component does. You know, like the difference between an .itl file and a .xml file?

First of all I still don't know how to post a question. There is nothing in here that asks me to do so. Therefore I can only reply to one already asked. My problem is that I followed the instructions in iTunes which tell me how to move the files from the C Drive to another location (which happens to be my D Drive). After doing that it then tells me to drag the old files into the recycle bin, however, it won't comply and tells me that the procedure can't be performed because of copywrite protections. Where do I go from here? Or at the very least, how do I post a question in this forum the normal way?
