How to keep Library up-to-date?

Hello.
I deleted some mp3s from My Music folder and also added some to it. But iTunes still showes deleted items (with a ! icon) and doesn't show new items. Of course, I can manually delete them and add files from menu, but it's so tedious. Isn't there any option that make iTune automatically manage it?
Or at list isn't there any menu like "Refresh library"?

Try this to get rid of the songs:
MacMuse, "Removing "!" / dead links in iTunes library", 11:37pm Oct 8, 2004 CDT
And drag the entire folder in to add new songs.

  • So, there's no plugin to keep Library up-to-date?

The other day, I posted a question if there is any way to keep Library up-to-date. I've got 2 replies. One person said there's no such way, and the other person told me a Javascript file that removes dead files from Library. But he said he didn't know how to make newly added files appear automatically in Library.
I'm just curious, I think managing changed to the music folder is the very basic function of a music library application. Everyone would want this feature and Windows Media Player 10 has that feature. Why iTunes doesn't? I've searched Google for some plugin or utility to do this for iTunes, but only in vain.
So now I'm wondering if I myself could write a plugin that does that. I've downloaded the iTunes COM SDK. But before starting this I'd like to make sure there really is no such utility to keep Library up-to-date. Of course, this is because I do not want to re-invent the wheel. What do you think? Do you think this kind of utility would be useful?

ITunes is smart enough to not add a file to the library that is already in the library. So the normal method is simply to drag and drop the base folder for your music into iTunes. It'll only add the ones that are missing.
If you want to do this with the COM SDK, you'd create an iTunes object, then do:
    iTunes.LibraryPlaylist.AddFiles("c:\path\to\your\music\folder");
This will add that folder to the library, and the same functionality applies. Then you just run that on a semi-regular basis. Maybe you use that script to start iTunes, so that when iTunes starts, your script forces it to rescan your folder.

  • ITunes moving to new HD - How to keep Library and Playlists

Old HD was too small so bought a bigger one. Prior to the purchase, I had already move my music to my external HD, doing the consolidate process - everything was working fine. iTunes was on my C drive in the usual doc & settings\sylvain\my music\itunes. My music was in I:\data\itunes.
I have partitioned my new HD in C (System), D (Programs) and E (Data); I have also named my system Family during setup (as oppose to sylvain); I have loaded iTunes on my new HD in D; I have all the files from my old C drive (copied on my extrenal HD); I still have my external HD, now G. On my old HD I had iTunes 7; on the new one I loaded iTunes 8.
How/what do I do to have all my songs/library back as well as the playlists I had?

    Some points to consider:
    i) The ITL file will be useful if-and-only-if you place your music folders/files in the *exact same spot* (Drive and Path) as it was when that ITL file was created. Having the XML file is also important.
ii) You have an archived ITL file from iTunes7 and are now using iTunes8. This may or may mot be a problem.
    First thing to try is:
    a) Remap your ExHD from G: back to I:
    b) Make sure your music files are in "I:\data\itunes" as you had them before
    c) With iTunes closed, and the re-mapped ExHD attached and on, place your saved copy of the V7 ITL file into the folder that the new (blank) ITL file resides that V8 is using.
    d) Open iTunes - if you are lucky, it will read and convert the older version ITL file and find all your music as well as Playlists and other metadata
If successful, you can then Consolidate the Library from the ExHD to wherever you want it to be on the new PC's HDs. Or keep the Library on the ExHD. At least make and keep backups of the music and database files.
If the above does not work, then post back and additional help can be provided.

  • How to move library only (not data) to new SSD

I currently have an iMac with a 2TB drive which contains my OS, application and all data (iTunes etc). However, I am about to install a 240GB SSD as an additional drive which I intend to use for the only for the OS and applications. I would like my iTunes library files to reside on the new SSD but to leave the data(music, video etc) on the existing 2TB drive and wonder what is the best way to achieve this.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Regards

The details of the answer will depend upon how you intend to have to drives set up.  If you're not changing drive structure in any way, try copying the iTunes folder to the SSD but do not copy the media folder.  On the SSD start iTunes with the option key held own and guide it to the new location of your library files.  I believe (but cannot test this) it will still know to look for the files on the other drive.  If it doesn't you will have to take additional steps.
Typically the easiest thing to do is not split library and media files.  It gets messy when moving between drives and if all your media is on another drive there's not really much point in having the library files on the main drive with no media.  You can just leave it all on the 2TB drive, then start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library location on the external drive.

  • How to keep the Unlimited verizon data plan when upgrading to iphone 4s?

How can I keep my unlimited data plan when upgrading to a IPHONE 4s???
I tried everything!!! I have an apple giftcard so I want to use it through apple.com but It wont let me keep my unlimited data plan

The terms of your data/phone plan are solely determined by your carrier, in this case Verizon.  It is up to them if they wish to allow consumers to carry over the existing terms of their plan.  Hence, the thing you need to do is contact Verizon customer service and ask them to carry your terms over with your upgrade.  I'm hoping if you ask nicely they may do it.
    Hope this helps

  • Advice needed on how to keep large amounts of data

    Hi guys,
Im not sure whats the best way is to make large amounts of data available to my android  app on the local device.
For example records of food ingredients, in the 100's?
I have read and successfully created .db's using this tutorial.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappsflex/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118666ade46-7d49. html
However to populate the database I use flash? So this kind of defeats the purpose of it. No point in me shifting a massive array of data from flash to a sql database, when I could access the data direct from the as3 array?
So maybe I could create the .db with an external program? but then how would I include that .db in the apk file and then deploy it to users android device.
Or maybe I create a as3 class with an xml object init and use that as a means of data storage?
    Any advice would be appreciated

You can use any means you like to populate your SQLite database, including using external programs, (temporarily) embedding a text file with SQL statements, executing some SQL from AS3 code etc etc.
Once you have populated your db, deploy it with your project:

  • How to keep user settings / app data when upgrading hard drive

I am in the process of upgrading the original 160GB hard drive to something a bit bigger. I'm comfortable with the physical process of installing the new drive, but my question is:
How do I save the existing users / data and transfer to the new installed HD? I really don't want to have to re-install all of the applications, manually save data from each profile and copy, etc etc.
Is there a decent back up utility I can use, and then simply "restore"?

You can get a firewire external drive and use SuperDuper! to clone your current drive to the external. After initializing the new internal drive, all you have to do is perform a reverse clone (which I did yesterday by the way, don't ask) and your new drive will have everything the old one did.
Good luck and let us know how you made out.

  • How to keep library with new user ID

My daughter has been purchasing songs and downloading them to her itunes library on her computer for many years (a library that shares access with mine). I now have an iphone for her and would like to open a new apple account in her name for her new iphone. I also would like her to be able to have all of her songs in her library on her new phone with her new user ID. Is this possible? If so, how do I accomplish this?

Connect the phone to her computer and sync the music she wants to it. If it is all of the music that's easy; just click the Music tab in iTunes and check "Entire music library". If it is selective the easiest way to do it is to first create a new playlist in iTunes, then drag all of the music she wants on the phone to that playlist, click on Selected Playslists on the Music tab and choose it. Then sync.
Alternatively, she can check "Manually manage..." on the Summary screen, then drag the music she wants to the phone, but the playlist trick is much easier. Anytime she wants to change the music on the phone just add to or remove from the playlist and sync again.
Next, create the new Apple ID and set up the account in iTunes. First log out of the old account on the Store menu in iTunes. Then go to the Store menu and choose "Create Apple ID" and follow the instructions. Any new music and apps will be associated with the new ID, but the old content will still be available.

  • How to keep pacman up-to-date

    Hi,
I'm wondering how do you keep pacman synced regularly, i.e. pacman -Sy? As a cron job? Manually every day?
I'm asking because it seems all applets/scripts that rely on pacman -Qu to report the number of packages that can be upgraded require a sync with pacman -Sy before they will report the correct number of upgradeable packages.  So, to have accurate pacman -Qu a pacman -Sy must be issued first, and if this is used for desktop applets and such, then I suppose pacman -Sy is scheduled to run automatically at some time interval. Is this correct? Is pacman -Sy just a cron job?
    Thanks for clarifications,
    -Igor

Actually thats incorrect (thanks to keenerd on irc for his help), and I was never talking about syncing or even changing the local database. All I want to do is the ability to check for updates based on a mirror (without changing the local database at all), something which practically every other package manager supports with a trivial command and something which I found out is possible (read below) but ugly (requires root, and the script would be like 5-10 lines since you have to create directories and/or check if they exist in tmp etc etc)
It is actually possible to check for updates (based on your arch mirror) without altering your local system at all by doing
    pacman -Sy --dbpath /tmp/somedir/
    pacman -Qu --dbpath /tmp/somedir/
The problem is that pacman -Sy --dbpath requires root, however it means its possible without resorting to the pacman -Sy method which can lead to issues later on. pacman should really have a command like pacman -Qyu which would do the above in a single command (and without having to worry messing around with /tmp), the command simply fetching the database from the mirror specified in your mirrorlist, and checks your packages against that mirror to see if any need updating (without actually updating the local database) and DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT (since it doesn't actually need root)
Then the user can go "ahhh I have some updates" and do a pacman -Syu

  • Keeping Library up to date from multiple folders

How do I get iTunes to consistently check in multiple folders (which I designate) for any newly added songs or videos? (So far having to do it manually)

If you want newly added songs or videos to go into a seperate playlist you should make a smart playlist. Make a smart playlist by clicking file in the top corner of itunes the click new smart playlist and make the rules on how to pick the songs, the songs will atomaticaly update.

Add both libraries to iPhoto Library Manager.  Then select the events or albums that you want to copy from library A  and drag them to library B in iPLM.

You can download CS4 here. Download CS4 products
Most comments I've seen say CS4 needs to be run in compatibility mode on Win 8.1. Windows 8.1 compatibility for Adobe Photoshop CS4 version 11
But the only way to know for sure is to try it.

  • How to sychronize app with a new library without loosing data?

    Hi,
I had to re-install my SO and now I have to synchronize my ipod touch with a new itunes library, itunes tells me that if I do this i'll loose al apps and data that i have on my ipod, how can I transfer app and data from the ipod to my pc and synchronize without loosing apps and data?

Wow, you Apple lemmings are great.  Yes, I do backup, brilliant of me, huh?  Thanks for the productive input.
Are any of your really going to argue in favor of the requirement that you sync with one itunes account on one computer?  If so, please enlighten me as to why this is a great idea.  I love the iPad but hate that it is permanently tethered to itunes.  In fact, the thing will not work without an itunes account.  This is one reason I don't have an iphone and stick with android.  The android acts as its own hard drive.  It's very simple to save, backup and swap files with any computer.
But back to the issue at hand, what if one doesn't backup?  Or if they did, the file was corrupt or the media they backed it to crashes?  The fact that the ipad cannot stand on its own is ridiculous.  By the way, I did restore my itunes folder but still get that notification that my ipad will be erased.  I'm sure though that I've added some apps since the last sync.  Are they going to be there when my ipad gets wiped out?  How does one know what has been saved?
I love Apple products for its hardware but hate the software and all the control they have over it.  If I lose my apps, then so be it.  If there is any way around this, please let me know.

  • How do I set  File Sharing  in iTunes to keep files up-to-date?

How do I set  File Sharing  in iTunes to keep files up-to-date?  i tried iTunes File Sharing, but the updates to the files never transferred across the USB during sync.  Tried to use Documents to Go, but the Apple behavior keeps them from syncing via USB, so when I am home and have no wifi/internet there is no way to transfer the files.  The other apps I have looked at also use wifi/internet to get around the problematic Apple behavior, so there is no way to connect via USB that I have found other than the iTunes.  Have not been able to locate any helpful information to configure the File Sharing to hotsync the files between pod and computer.

I am trying to USB sync Word, Excel, and PDF files between the ipod and the PC.
Pretty sure icloud has to have the internet to work, but I can try to see what USB options there are there when time permits.
Pretty sure dropbox has to have the internet to work, but I can try to see what USB options there are there when time permits.
