How to Launch a "setup.exe" with LabVIEW app? No luck with System Exec.vi

I've got an application that I'm trying to update with a separate LabVIEW application (the "Updater"). It's the "Check for Updates" capability you see on other major apps.
Here's the glitch: When the Updater tries to launch "setup.exe" using "System Exec.vi", The installer seems to catch the attempt and pops a dialog titled "Windws XP Setup" saying "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components". The install does not begin and the installer closes (if it was ever open!).
Running the same installer by double-clicking the "setup.exe" file from windows runs just fine.
Here's the question: "How can a LabView app launch an installer?"

Could you show the code.
Look at the path where you want to run the code.

How can I format an HD with System 10.4 and install Leopard Snow?

You need to partion the hard drive using Disk Utility. On one partition install 10.4. On the other 10.6. As a note I trust you are doing this on a MBP and not a PPC Mac because 10.6 won't install.

Hi Julesjay,
I found out that if the command string didn't include the path of the executable (start) the program would fail (at least with matlab executables) So make sure the path of the exe is included in the command string.

• General Inquiry Regarding Error Handling with System Exec.vi

I have a sub vi that uses the System Exec.vi to send SMS messages when triggered. I am confused as to how the error handling works and why all of the errors seem to go to the "standard error" vs the "Error out". The reason I am interested is because I am trying to interrupt the error out of another script to execute a command if error=true.
I have intentionally created an error to test this, however it does not seem that the signal is ever being sent to the error out, only to the standard error.
Any help/explanation as to how this works would be greatly appreciated.

• Execution of shortcuts with System Exec?

Is it possible to execute a shortcut (typical named "Shortcut to nnnn") with System Exec.vi?

No it isn't because shortcuts are not executable. Shortcuts are files which can be interpreted by the windows explorer.
You can run a shortcut via the shell execute function. Attached is a VI which will call this function. In "Dateiname" you have to supply the filename with extension. In "Verzeichnis" you have to supply the folder where the file is. You can set the verb to "open" which will run the application and "print" which will cause the application to print the file if it can. "Rückgabe" is the return from the shell execute function.
You can use each file extension to start the registered application for the file. If you give a file with the name Test.vi you will start LabVIEW in the same way you will start it like you have double clicked th
e file in the explorer.

• \\SERVER\Clients\Setup\setup.exe with Windows Vista Error

I added the first Vista client to an SBS 2003, SP1 domain. Until now, all clients were WinXP, SP2. Office 2003 is installed on the XP clients, and the Vista client, which may not be pertinent to this problem.
As is normal, "\\SERVER\Clients\Setup\setup.exe /s SERVER" is executed when a user logs on to any domain client. On the Vista client, I always get the dialog -- regardless of the account privilege -- asking for permission to run Setup.exe. It is annoying. Occasionally, the Program Compatiblity Assistant will appear and advise there's a known compatiblity issue with Setup.exe. It points to KB article 926505 for resolution. The title of the KB is, "Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 compatibility update."
When I run the SBS2003SP1-KB926505-X86-ENU.EXE fix, I get the error: "This update cannot be installed. Either it is already installed as part of an existing service pack, or it requires a more recent service pack. For more information, see the systems requirements on the download page."
I installed Windows Server 2003 SP2 and run the KB926505 fix, but I get the same error "This update cannot be installed. Either it is already installed as part of an existing service pack" After a reboot of te SBS server the same problem on the Vista client, I always get the dialog -- regardless of the account privilege -- asking for permission to run Setup.exe. It is annoying. Occasionally, the Program Compatiblity Assistant will appear and advise there's a known compatiblity issue with Setup.exe. It points to KB article 926505 for resolution.
The problem is Windows Vista Business, because all windows XP clients have no problem at all.

PNP,
You do not say whether if you accept the permission dialog whether the setup continues or not, but the short answer to the question revolves around UAC.
Remember that EVERY user (except the actual Administrator account) has only Standard user rights regardless of group. When a task that requires Admin rights is executed, one of three things will happen: 1) If you are THE Administrator, then your task will continue. 2) If you have Admin rights, you will be prompted that a process is trying to use elevated rights and ask for permission, or 3) If you are a Standard user, you will either be denied flatly or prompted to supply credentials. Which of these happen depend on GPO settings, but the default is to prompt.
In any event, I believe that this is what you are running into, and is one of the big feature improvements in Vista. Yes, it can be a bit annoying (Try deleting an "All Users" icon from the Start Menu!) but is there to place one more barrier between virus and malware writers and your OS.
If it's TOO annoying to bear, you can turn off UAC by going into your profile and disabling it. (It requires Admin rights, of course. ) It is not recommended as you do a very effective job or nutering the Vista Security Model by doing so.
If it, of course, your choice. we IT Admins have a lot more issues with this than the standard user, but for me, I gladly take the tradeoff because I worry a lot less about those few I HAVE to give Admin rights to.
Good luck!

• Open a *.exe application in LABVIEW with system exec function.

Greetings,
I would like to be able to lauch a *.exe application and open a specific file within my labview vi. The trick is to avoid using active X control at all cost. I would like to use the system exec function but I couldn't quite get it to work.
Let's assume that I would like to lauch wordpad.exe from my local drive. What are the params I need to pass? Thanks.

You have to type in the command line of the System exec vi the name of the executable and eventually its path.
Look at the attached vi that launches Wordpad as you asked.

• How to call a Linux exe from LabVIEW for Windows

Hello,
I need to call a non-LabVIEW Linux executable using LabVIEW for Windows. Any suggestions, aside from buying LabVIEW for Linux?
Thank you,
Chris White

Okay, I'll throw out a few ideas and I'll let you pick which one you may think is easiest.
1. Use the internet toolkit ($$$) or build a simple telnet client yourself in LabVIEW (use the TCP VIs in labview). This would allow you to connect to the telnet port of your linux box, login, password, and execute a command. (You'll probably want to use nohup, do a man on nohup to find out more).
2. Install SSH daemon on your linux box, and an ssh client on your windows machine. You can't get SSH for windows from cygwin. This would be more secure, and you wouldn't need to use the TCP VIs, you could simply use the "system exec" vi to call SSH.
3. On your linux box, install your app in inetd. Then, whenever someone connected to a certai
n port # on the linux box, it would execute your command. A little dangerous because someone might try to connect 50 million times (or a port scan) and kill your box. You also wouldn't be able to send a dynamic command line argument.
4. Write a small TCP application on your linux box to wait for connections (listen for command line options) and execute your command.
You'll probably find one of these options ideal depending on your administration and programming background.

• Setup.exe file can not by accessed by system

OS is WinXP Home SP3. When either installing complete all-in-one software from disc or downloaded rw2_021_w02_enu.exe, the install stops when trying to access Setup.exe "The File Can not Be Accessed from the System".Does anyone have a solution to this issue?

Hi , and welcome to the HP Forums! I see you are having software errors. I would like to help! I would recommend removing the ink cartridges from the printer, and perform a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar. I would then suggest Uninstalling the Printer Software. Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration. You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows. Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows. Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

• How to display double byte characters with system.out.print?

Hi, I'm a newbie java programmer having trouble to utilize java locale with system io on dos console mode.
Platform is winxp, jvm1.5,
File structure is:
C:\myProg <-root
C:\myProg\test <-package
C:\myProg\test\Run.java
C:\myProg\test\MessageBundle.properties <- default properties
C:\myProg\test\MessageBundle_zh_HK.properties <- localed properties (written in notepad and save as Unicode, window notepad contains BOM)
inside MessageBundle.properties:
test = Hello
inside Message_zh_HK.properties:
test = 喂 //hello in big5 encoding
run.java:
package test;
import java.util.*;
public class Run{
public static void main(String[] args){
Locale locale = new Locale("zh","HK");
ResourceBundle resource =
ResourceBundle.getbundle("test.MessageBundle", locale);
System.out.println(resource.getString("test"));
}//main
}//classwhen run this program, it'll kept diplay "hello" instead of the encoded character...
then when i try run the native2ascii tool against MessageBundle_zh_HK.properties, it starts to display monster characters instead.
Trying to figure out what I did wrong and how to display double byte characters on console.
Thank you.
p.s: while googling, some said dos can only can display ASCII. To demonstrate the dos console is capable of displaying double byte characters, i wrote another helloWorld in chinese using notepad with C# and compile using "csc hello.cs", sure enough, console.write in c# allowed me to display the character I was expecting. Since dos console can print double byte characters, I must be missing something important in this java program.

after google a brunch, I learned that javac (hence java.exe) does not support BOM (byte order mark).
I had to use a diff editor to save my text file as unicode without BOM in order for native2ascii to convert into a ascii file.
Even the property file is in ascii format, I'm still having trouble to display those character in dos console. In fact, I just noticed I can use system.out.println to display double byte character if I embedded the character itself in java source file:
public class Run {
public static void main(String[] args) throws UnsupportedEncodingException{
String msg = "中文"; //double byte character
try{
System.out.println(new String(msg.getBytes("UTF-8")) + " new string");  //this displays fine
catch(Exception e){}
Locale locale = new Locale("zh", "HK");
ResourceBundle resource = ResourceBundle.getBundle("test.MessagesBundle", locale);
System.out.println(resource.getString("Hey")); //this will display weird characterso it seems like to me that I must did something wrong in the process of creating properties file from unicode text file...

• Close a notepad window in labview after opening it with system exec

Is there a way to close a notepad window within Labview after opening the window using the System Exec function?
Also can Labview send characters to Notepad so they show up in its window?

You can send a quit message to another window by using one of the VIs in a collection of windows interaction VIs called winutil32 (or something similar), but you will have to know the window name. Try searching for it on this site.
You could probably also use the windows PostMessage function to send characters to another window, but that would require learning how to work with DLLs in LV, reading up on the function at the MSDN site and implementing it. Another, more simple but less secure, way is to use the windows Keybd_Event function to simulate keyboard clicks. If the notepad window has the focus, it will receive those clicks. Try searching this site or google for things like "Keybd_Event LabVIEW" or "simulate keyboard".
Try to take over the world!

• How to capture keyboard strokes while focus is on an external app. Opened with system exec

Hi to the Forum,
I have an application that runs an external app. Through system exec, while this application is open the user needs to input a 6 digit serial number using the keyboard, I need to capture in parallel that information on my main VI in order to perform some information validations, such as the six digits were entered, the serial number is not repeated etc. I have read other post about the same issue but did not found a practical way to achieve a solution, please help with an example of how to do that as I'm on the final stage of the project.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
