How to Link After Effects Buttons/Interface to Scripts?

Hey, guys.
I'm trying to write a script that displays certain messages when a caertain button is pressed in After Effects itself (not buttons in my script). I was wondering if there was a way to, for example, display "This is a button" when I click on the render button. Does anyone know if this is possible with the tools provided in ExtendScript Toolkit CS6?
Thank you.

Yeah, I don't think it's possible, even if you were to write a C++ plugin with the SDK.  You could definitely detect when buttons are pressed with you wrote a plugin, or even a ScriptUI plugin.  As for attached event listenters to core AE ui elements, I cannot think of a way to do that off the top of my head. . . if I think of something that could work, I'll definitely post.  Maybe you can be more specific as to what you are trying to acheive if you could do that.  Why do want to detect clicks on ui elements that are part of the standard AE ui?

  • Re-linking After Effects assets inside Premiere

I have a premiere project that has a dynamically linked After Effects project. I wanted to rename the folder that all my footage resides in. When I do that I relink all my footage / After Effects files when I open the project. That all works great. However, the After Effects project itself is referencing the footage in the old location resulting in bars and tones showing up. How do I tell After Effects where the footage is now?
If I open up the After Effects project and double click on one of the missing assets to relink it, it trys to browse my hard drive looking for what I named the sub-clip inside Premiere. I need it to reference a clip inside Premiere.

That does work: you don't need to reference a clip inside PrPro, 'cos a clip inside PrPro is just the link to a footage on your hard drive. When you replace a clip or a group of clips in PrPro timeline with dynamically linked comp, AE creates a new composition and imports those clip(s) into the project. But then again, those clips are just links to original footages on your hard drive with properly set In and Out points in the newly created composition. Hence, select a missing clip in AE Project panel, right-click and choose Replace Footage -> File..., locate the original footage on your hard drive and open it up. If all missing footages are in the same folder, AE will automatically find the rest.

  • Dynamically linked After Effects comps causing Premiere to freeze (after latest updates)

Normally in a dynamic link, any changes made in After Effects would be displayed in Premiere within a few seconds. However, after the latest software updates... it now takes 1-2 minutes and the Premiere interface is completely frozen during that time.
    Anybody else having similar issues?
    -Pete

Hi, thanks for the link but I'm having a different issue. My Premiere interface actually freezes and I'm unable to use Premiere for 1-2 minutes.
App Nap is disabled for all Adobe apps and I do frequenly empty my Adobe Media Cache and After Effects disk cache and it doesn't prevent the freezing.
Or sometimes just having a dynamically linked After Effects comp on the timeline slows Premiere down to the point where even scrolling through assets in my project panel is very jerky.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CC renders do not reflect changes to Dynamically Linked After Effects Comps

When rendering a Premiere timeline with a dynamically linked After Effects composition, Adobe Media Encoder will sometimes use an older version of the linked composition (even after I have saved changes in the After Effects comp).
For example, if I correct a spelling mistake on some text in After Effects, save the composition, and then add the sequence to the render queue in Premiere, the final output from media encoder still has the old spelling.
If I do a straight export from Premiere instead of adding to render queue, the output is always correct. I've noticed this problem on several different Windows 8.1 systems.
All versions of the software are up to date as of today.
Why is this? Is it something to do with the disk cache in After Effects? Does media encoder have it's own cache that I need to clear?

Hi, I've been having this same issue.  Here are some additional things I've noticed about it:
Changes are reflected properly when played back on timeline in Pr CC 2014.
Happens regardless if the dynamic link file was rendered or not, thus deleting the render files does not fix the issue.
The issue can persist through saving, closing, and reopening both AE and Pr.
I'm using OSX 10.9.4, so this is not just a PC issue.
Other than manually watching for every change to be reflected in the render, there is no way to know a problem has occurred.  Needless to say this can be incredibly costly.
Please address this quickly, it's completely unacceptable that what we render out could be a different version from what we see on the timeline.
PS Some additional things I will be testing:
Does the issue persist through closing all CC apps, including Media Encoder.
Does rendering directly out of Pr, i.e. not using Media Encoder, fix the issue.

  • Program monitor constantly freezing/stalling when playing dynamically linked After Effects comps

I'm having program monitor issues when I try to play dynamically linked After Effects comps from my Premiere timeline. I realize it's expected to have jerky playback since After Effects comps are memory and CPU intense, but it doesn't seem normal for these things to happen:
Sometimes during playback, the program monitor completely freezes while audio continues to play and the CTI continues to move along timeline. When this happens, there's no way to stop the playback at all using mouse or keyboard... so I'm forced to just quit Premiere and re-open project.
Program monitor can also freeze when I place the CTI on top of the After Effects comp. Sometimes if I wait a minute, the screen could update and eventually display the After Effects comp.
I'm unable to render effects on the Premiere timeline because it just hangs at "Rendering frame 0" and never advances forward.
There's nothing special about the After Effects comp I'm linked to... it could just be regular text that I animated using ease keyframes and motion blur.
I originally thought it was related to GPU settings but it doesn't make a difference if I set After Effects to use CPU instead of GPU or set Premiere's Mercury Playback engine to software, CUDA, or openGL. I even have the latest CUDA drivers installed on my Mac. But I must mention that this issue got significanly worst after updating to OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    Here's my system details:
    OSX 10.9 Mavericks
    Premiere 7.0.1 (105)
After Effects 12.0.1.7 (I installed the OS X Mavericks crash update fix)
The most prevalent error messages displayed in the OSX console is:
Adobe Premiere Pro CC[402]: dynamic_cast error 1: Both of the following type_info's should have public visibility.  At least one of them is hidden. N5dvaui2ui8MessageTIKNS0_7UI_NodeEEE, N5dvaui8controls23UI_PictureSupplyMessageE.
Here's a few that are less common:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CC[402]: [PremiereCocoaMacApplication handleMenuCommand:1633841013 from <DVAMacMenuItem: 0x6100002f8300 About Premiere Pro>]
After Effects[377]: -[NSMenu menuID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x600000077080
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    -Pete

I think I found the problem... OSX Mavericks introduced a power saving feature called App Nap that basically slows down an app that appears to be doing nothing or is minimized in the background.
So essentually when I try to display an After Effects dynamically linked comp via my Premiere timeline, it freezes because OSX put After Effects to sleep.
To fix this, I had to disable the App Nap feature on After Effects. Now everything is performing back at pre-Mavericks levels (which is about 10% stalling playback issues vs 90% stalling). I also noticed that all of the console errors went away.
To disable App Nap in OSX...
    Go to your Applications folder
Expand the After Effects CC folder
Right-click on "Adobe After Effects CC.app" and select Get Info
Add a checkmark beside "Prevent App Nap"
    Restart the application
I also did this with all my Adobe apps just to be safe.
    Hope this helps
    -Pete

  • How is the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update working for you?

The After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update is available. It fixes a lot of crashes, errors, and other problems, and it adds some capabilities for RED (R3D) footage and the Apply Color LUT effect.
After you've installed the update, let us know how it's working for you.

    Todd,
I installed it over the weekend after seeing it mentioned in my RSS feed and have been using it heavily for a few days. The updater launched from within AE did not find the update. I had to go to the download page that was linked to in the feed. Installed from that download with no problem on Windows 7.
AE 10.0.1. has crashed on me twice over the weekend. Both times I was scrubbing through a composition that uses a pretty intense plug-in (Video Gogh). I would submit a bug report to Adobe or the plug-in developer, but the problem has not been repeatable. Also, an AE composition dynamically linked to PPro may have made PPro crash. I wish I could give more details on that but I was, as usual, trying to do too many things at one time.
Other than that, everything went smoothly during many hours of compositing in AE.

  • Dynamic link after effects and adobe media encoder

    Hello,
I recently downloaded After Effects cc (yesterday). I am running a mac pro with OSX 10.9.3 2.3 ghz intel core i7 with 16 gb 1600 MHz DDR3.
On previous versions of AE I was able to render straight out of AE, I know this is not the case with CC anymore. I am trying to use AME to export however I am having issues.
When I try to send to AME from the Composition tab in AE it looks like it is doing something and then nothing happens. I then opened AME separately and tried to "add after effects comp" from the file menu in AME the error message displayed was "Could not connect to Adobe After effects. Please verify that Adobe After effects and Adobe Dynamic link components are installed".
I have also tried to drag and drop my composition directly from AE to AME and the following message appears "Dynamic link error - Source is empty"
I have read a multitude of threads on this issue and this is definitely not a firewall issue. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

    > On previous versions of AE I was able to render straight out of AE, I know this is not the case with CC anymore.
Why do you think that? You can still use the render queue in After Effects to render and export directly out of After Effects.
That said, there are some formats that Adobe Media Encoder handles better.
    > and this is definitely not a firewall issue
    How have you determined that?
Does exporting to QuickTime (.mov) format from After Effects work? How about the 3D Camera Tracker and Warp Stabilizer effects? The reason that I ask about these is that they use the same communication mechanism that Dynamic Link does, so if they also fail, then it tells us something about where the problem is.

  • Slow render times in Premiere when linking After Effects media

I'm an Avid Media Composer editor but I just switched to Premiere for a special project that needs to have non-interlaced output. I've been pretty impressed until I integrated an After Effects project into my timeline. My render times have now increased exponentially, despite the fact that the After Effects effects are quite simple - single layers of video with very simple moves. Can anyone else chime in with their experience integrating After Effects projects into Premiere? This just seems too horrible to be true.

I've found that the time to render out of After Effects versus the time to render a Dynamic Link comp in PPro is roughly identical. In fact, in many cases it's a bit quicker.
For heavy duty comps, I'd expect to see PPro struggle a little bit more, but definitely not with the basic work you seem to be talking about.

  • How to install After Effects CS5.5(64-bit) with After Effects CS4 installer(32bit)?

I have purchased After Effects CS5.5 unknowingly it is only for 64 bit system. My system is 32 bit. When I read a Adobe help page I got to knew that 32 bit users can install AE CS5 and above with help of a AE CS4 installer. Please help me how to do this.My system specs are:
    Windows 7 32-bit
Intel Core i3 3.2 Ghz processor
    2 GB ram

In this page: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs6-32bit.html they tells that:"The support package installs CS4 versions of the Adobe applications to assist users who were transitioning to a 64-bit OS.If you currently have the CS4 32-bit installer and serial number, you can deploy without any additional steps." I didn't understand properly. Plz refer the page and tell me what it means.

  • Re-Linking After Effects CS5 files

I moved an After Effects project file and now it is not linked with several of the files within the project.  I tried using the "create proxy" "replace proxy" and "replace footage" but in all cases, the file is imported with the name of the file on the stage and appears to be unusable.  What is the proper way to re-link files so that they actually work.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply.  No I did not know about that command (collect files).  For sure from now on, I will manually put all files in the folder with the project just to be safe.  It's too late to run it now, I have everything moved.

  • How To Stop After Effects From Knocking Out My Internet Connection As It Is Downloading?

    Greetings,
Yesterday, January 20, 2015, I purchased an annual subscription to After Effects.  And, after numerous attempts at downloading the software with the same abysmal results, I am now going to the forums for a possible remedy.  Everything goes well in beginning my download, including getting my McAfee Anti-virus program to accept Adobe Creative Cloud, however after a few minutes, the download process knocks out my Internet connection, forcing me to re-boot.  I do receive two back-to-back error messages; none of which are listed by Adobe set of error messages in their FAQ section.
The first one reads:  "Core: Creative Cloud - Application Error.  The instruction at 0x100014a0 referenced memory at 0x100014a0.  The memory could not be written."  The second error message is likened to the first, only with a different number...
"94% Complete: explorer.exe - Application Error.  The instruction at 0x80001610 referenced memory at 0x80001610.  The memory could not be written."
Finally, do you know if I can bypass all of this trouble by having Adobe After Effects disks shipped to me?  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Joy in the Lord,
    A. Landis Jones

    Greetings,
And thank you both, Mylenium & Dave.  After I compose this note, I am going to mark your answers as correct.  I just wanted to write this qualifier, first.  I tried to do as both of you suggested, however, I could not figure out how to disable McAfee Anti-Virus.  I did manage to turn off McAfee Firewall.  And when that was done, I tried to download After Effects.  However, that trick did not work the first couple of times I tried it.  A few re-boots later, After Effects (as well as some unknown program I did not expect called Media Encoder) finally downloaded on my computer.
After I began this thread, I recalled that, oftentimes, when I view YouTube videos online, the same thing happens - my Internet connection gets disrupted.  Then I remembered that the trouble began when my computer crashed and I tried to re-install Windows 8.1 Pro.  So, maybe that is the real culprit - my system crash, that is.  A little while ago, I tested viewing YouTube videos to no avail.  So, I am suspecting that your solution to turn off my anti-virus (in my case, my firewall) did the trick, and I thank you two, Mylenium & Dave, mightily.
    May you have many blessings.
    Joy in the Lord,
    A. Landis Jones

  • How to install after effects to my computer?

I just bought the CC package and downloaded After Effects, but it is not showing on my programs!!! How do I install this program?

Because your computer meets the system requirements for those other programs, but it does NOT meet the system requirements for After Effects.
If you look closely at the available CC Applications on your machine, I wouldn't be surprised if you don't find Premiere Pro, either.  Both make heavy demands on the hardware, more than the other applications.
Now, if you're thinking, "Why didn't Adobe tell me that in the first place?" there are probably warnings before you download.  But I doubt the warnings come with flashing skull-and-crossbones icons.
My part of the country has had a rotten winter.  Now that spring is approaching, bajillions of potholes are appearing on city streets.  The city has a few "rough road" warning signs up at the worst spots.  The signs don't say, "Watch out for the biggest potholes!  They'll swallow your car!"  The city expects you to be cautious.
Likewise, Adobe expects you to read thoroughly and know your machine before you download.
