How to "lock" down a few clips at the end of a timeline

I'm working on an edit and the last several clips have all been edited into place and timed perfectly. I'm working backwards from the end. How in the world can I keep those last several clips from moving? With the magnetic timeline every time I try to do anything they want to move. Even with the position arrow. I've put them in their own storyline but the still move. They are connected to the primary storyline as that's the main thing.
Seems weird there is no way to lock them in place. Maybe I am just missing something.

Otherwise I have to work to make things not happen in the primary storyline.
Like every other editing application. Every one has a default video and audio track. It doesn't mean everything has to go on those tracks. It doesn't even mean most of your material has to go on those tracks. Yes, you have to do something to make edits to some other layer or storyline.
We're not going to agree on this. I'll tell you how I think you should use the application, but you can use it however you like.

Yes, that little piece of info is critical. I'd say the biggest difficulty with FCPX is the whole new language.
If I read you correctly, your Audio is in the Main Storyline (Track 1 in plain old Editorese). This makes anything else you add (above or below) a "connected clip", which we can no longer think of as "Track 2" because Jobs sez so. So, yes, you cannot just add a transition to either end of a connected clip.
No argument with Tracy's solution, because I haven't seen any other general solution presented for any attempt to treat connected clips as the main storyline. And, of course, when they were "track 1" and "track 2", you could.
An alternative solution, however, is to highlight the connected clip and press Ctrl-V to bring up the Video Animation Editor. Click the "reveal button" for Compositing: Opacity (bottom, right). Once open, there is a "fade handle" to the right top. Drag it left for however much fade you wish. (there is one on the left as well, but you were only talking about a fade-out.)
A second alternative, perhaps for future projects where everything keys on audio, may be to create a Gap clip (used to be called slug) in the primary storyline before ever dropping in the audio. Then you can add video to the main story line and modify it without having to go thru hoops to do the simplest thing.

How do you move a sound clip in the timeline?

I have not had this problem before. I have put many songs into the timeline, and repositioned them. Today I pulled up a project and attempted to reposition a song to fit in better with the clip, and I'm unable to do so. I can't select the song, or anything else. Obviously I have set or locked up this track, and I can't figure out how to unlock if that is what I have done. I have 6 songs on that track, Audio track 2, and I can't reposition any of them. I can't even remove them from that track. What am I doing wrong?

Hunt, most of my music files, over 9000 songs, are mostly mp3 files and a few are wma, and because of copyright laws I wouldn't use them in a commercial project I'm working on anyway. When I am working on a project for a client I will generally use higher quality WAV files. This project was being done just to learn some new techniques, gain some more experience with PPCS4, and expand my knowledge with the program. I have this huge number of music files and styles to work with, so I can do a great deal of experimentation to see what different songs can do to the mood of the video.
As a test, I did put the exact same songs into the timeline on a different audio track. The problem track is audio 2, and I duplicated those songs on audio 3. I did the exact same editing. I faded them in and out the same as before. Split one song into 3 sections had parts of it come in and out over a video section of 9 minutes duration. They are working perfectly. I was just working on one section of that project a half hour ago, and I was still able to select and move each of the four songs on that track any way that I wanted to. However, the track just above it in that same timeline, Track 2, is still frozen.
Hunt, just a moment ago I solved my problem. Still not being that familiar with the program, two days ago I know that I was playing with all of the controls, and I obviously hit one of them without knowing one of its side effects. I hit the show "show track keyframes". I'm sure that you know it, but I didn't realize that when that function is selected, you can't do much else with the track but play with those keyframe. Even though I didn't have the track locked, in the traditional way, it was still, for all practicall reasons, locked. I unchecked that function and now everything is back to normal again on that track.
Something very simple, as many things turn out to be when you understand it. However, maybe someone else will make the same mistake, and my posting here will help them.
I will use your suggestions for using .WAV files. Thank you again.

What is the purpose of using the .WMA files? I'm sure that you have a good reason, but they can be problematic, at best. I only use them as a trasfer medium, when I need to get a DD 5.1 SS soundtrack into Audition for editing. There, I break them out into 6 discrete .WAV files, edit in Multi-track Mode and then usually Export as the 6 discrete WAV's to be encoded to DTS, or similar.
If you do not have a compelling reason for using the .WMA, try PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit and see if the issues go away.

No - DVD timelines are a little different to FCP. If you need to add a clip to the stream, you need to split the exisitng clip (you could trim it back to where you want to insert the new piece) and drag the new piece onto the same timeline. If you trimmed the existing piece then add another instance of it to the timeline and trim the new part from the left until you get to what you want as the out point.
If you have a collection of video clips on your DVDSP timeline, simply dragging a new one on will shuffle the others along appropriately. However, the audio will not shuffle with them, and you'll end up moving it all manually.
The very best thing is to create the timeline precisely as you want it in FCP and encode it to MPEG2 before bringing it in to DVDSP. Remember that DVDSP is not an editor, it is a place to assemble your work - it won't do anything remotely like FCP in that respect.

Why is Final Cut Express adding 5 minutes of black to the end of my .dv export? I've marked it out, there are no additional clips at the end, it's doing this consistantly.

I'm using Final Cut Express 4.0 and when I export to .dv it adds 5 minutes of black to the end of my export. Any ideas on why this is happening? I have it marked out and there are no additional clips at the end that it's trying to capture.

According to previous posts in this forum, Apple does not support FCE with Lion, no less Mountain Lion. Nonetheless some people report no problems using FCE with Lion, depending upon upgrade protocols from Leopard etc. You list FEC 4.0, but FCE has an update to 4.01 free download from software update.

Question on how to lock down an iPad for demonstration in my store.

I work for an Apple reseller and we have a few demo iPads. The are running the current apple supplied demo content but we have a problem. We have a guy who comes in here every day and downloads his own apps and sets all of the apps to Chinese. We can't use the built in restrictions because they are disabled on demo iPads.
I was wondering if there is a way to keep people from downloading their own apps and from changing app settings. We have to restore them about 3 times a week and it is getting to be a hassle. I tried google to no avail.

You seem to making some kind of special assumptions because it's a ipad.
Same this goes for printers, copying machines, and coffee machines. You never give people unlimited access to any thing unless you wan to call the service man 20 times a week.

How to lock down "settings" on my ipod?

I need to lock down my "settings" on my ipod. I don't want to merely block access to Safari, but I want to block access to the settings area of the ipod. I have found "folder lock" apps at the Apple store, but they seem to be predominantly aimed at hiding one's ****, which is not at all what I need. I found a number of apps that would be available if I wanted to jailbreak my ipod, which I don't want to do.

Sorry, but you cannot lock the Settings in general. Only those items that appear in the Restrictions can be locked.

How to lock a period in Essbase but the app is Planning app?

I am using Planning v11.1.1.3 and have a Planning app.
The requirement is that user can read/write data directly to Essbase via Smartview. I lock a particular period, e.g. Oct, in Scenario dimension so the user cannot write data to Oct in Planning, but how do stop user to write data to Oct via Smartview?
The user has 'Server Access' for Essbase, 'Interactive User' and 'Analytic Services Write Access' for Planning.
If I create a additional filter to lock 'Oct' in Essbase, it seems the user can still write to 'Oct'.
Appreciate if anyone can shed some light on this.

First Smartview is 2 things. Its a planning interface and an Essbase interface.
So users can access Planning forms and still have the right security. I assume you mean users are interfacing Essbase directly to the same cube that is your planning cube so basically bypassing Planning that controls things
you can push the filters from Planning to Essbase but Planning controls the periods from the scenario. And If I remember correctly this is not passed to Essbase.
So your options are 1
1) dont let users access Essbase directly and force them to use Planning forms in Smartview
2) don't push Planning security filters to Essbase and try to replicaate all the security again in Essbase. But the tools is not design for this and refreshing will wipe out all your hardwork so be very very careful
3) push Oracle/Hyperion to finally fix the way they do security to make it more unified process once and for all

Isn't there an "Over Black" in the titles pane anymore? (I don't have imovie 08...)
Not as such. It depends on which "Title" option you are using. Double clicking on any of the last nine "Title" options in the lower area outside the text boxes will open the color selection tool. The first three "appear" to be "black" by default when "dropped" to the project area since they are actually transparent (as you can see when dropped to a video clip). Same seems to be true for "upper" area of the last nine.

How do I layer 2 video clips in the same time space/ playing side by side at the same time

I wish to add 2 views of the same subject side by side and playing at the same time. Is this A possible and B if so how do I add the second video clip into the same time space

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
This sounds like a split screen effect to me.
If so, one view on Video 1 and the other directly above that is the other view on Video 2.
Then crop each so that each occupies 1/2 the Edit area monitor screen.
(generalized since I do not know your program version, see effects Transform/Crop).
I wrote the following in 2011 for a Premiere Elements 8 user in another forum
Your basic tools to achieve your goal are Crop Video Effect and Horizontal Flip Video Effect.
Video ONE on video track 1.
Video TWO on video track 2, directly above Video ONE.
Highlight Video ONE on video track 1, Edit Mode/Effects/Video Effects/Transform/Crop, followed by adjusting the crop under Edit Effects (see bottom of Effects Panel) so that Video ONE occupies the left half of the screen.
Do the same for Video TWO on video track 2, Edit Mode/Effects/Video Effects/Transform/Crop etc. so that Video TWO occupies the right half of the screen. BUT end with Edit Mode/Effects/Video Effects/Transform/Horizontal Flip.
Highlight the video on either side to make adjusts in the Properties Palette and appropriate Panel (position, cropping, etc). But, remember that if you make changes in the "flipped" right side of the screen, Edit Effects/Crop Panel right option will be for left and left option will be for right.
You may or may not need the "flip" part of the effect.
