How to preserve 60i smooth motion?

Hi all!
I've been using FCE to edit, and then making iDVD to make disks.  When I was shooting with a DV camera, this worked fine, and I got smooth 60i motion when I played the DVDs on a TV.
But now I have an AVCHD camera, and when I export, iDVD turns the 1080/60i into 480/30p.  I understand that some people like the 30p look as being more cinematic, but my event coverage has lots of camera pans, and the 30p motion makes these look much worse then 60i. I know that the high motion is still there when I export 1080i from FCE, because I can play the file and see the "mouse teeth", but I can't find any way to turn 1080i into 480i without loosing the smooth high motion that is present in the original.  Any ideas?
BTW, I noticed with disapointment that even with the newest iMacs, 60i footage is still presented to the viewer as 30p, unless I used Final Cut Pro to turn it into 60p.  My Elgato TV tuner can make 60p happen on my current screen from 60i broadcasts, so why does this still not work?  Is there a setting somewhere?

The workflow in your first paragraph sounds fine. I'm guessing that "quick AIC  way" means exporting a reference movie. But regardless, it sounds like that part of the process is working as it should. (Pursuing the DV idea further doesn't strike me as likely to be fruitful. The advantage of exporting as Quick Time Movie, current settings, is that it avoids the additional compression step that QT Conversion always performs.)
Although I don't use this workflow, many people report good results by dropping their HD sequence into an SD sequence and export that as a QT movie to bring into Compressor, where they create MPEG files before authoring DVDs. You might try that approach (of course skipping the Compressor step) and bring the SD movie into iDVD to see whether you get better results.
If that leads to another dead end, you might consider investing in software that will give you more control than you have now with FCE and iDVD.
Good luck.

  • Help With Ease In/Ease Out / Smooth Motion

I'm in the process of completing a historical documentary and have run into a problem. The project calls for a LOT of photos. And, as usual, most of the pix have different types of moves attached to them. I'm trying to get the moves to start and stop on the photos with an "ease in" and/or "ease out" effect. Normally, I'd do this in AE, but due to time constraints (not to mention the volume of pix), I'd rather get the gist of it down in FCP.
I've tried both the "Ease In/Ease Out" and "Smooth" keyframe commands. Smooth seems to work best. If there's a center position change during the move however, the photo appears to slightly "float" up and down during the duration of the move - especially when starting and stopping. Problem is, I don't want it to float... I just want it to move smoothly from point A to point B.
Is there a way to gradually start and then gradually stop movement on an object (such as a photo), without having this floating effect?
    Thanks.

You will like neither the animation process nor the results in FCP.
There is simple coverage of eases in the FCP manual, you will want to find that section and put a stickie on it. Beware that FCP's native DV rendering for motion blows. You will need to add some blur but not motion blur. FCPS's motion blur is nothing like AE's motion blur. It's awful.
The problems you will have are going to drive you nuts. The keyframes and Beziers in FCP are skittish and spazzy, nothing like the smooth and elegant controls that have always been available in AE. It's like Apple decided to reinvent the entire Bezier handling system and they forgot to finish the job.
I suggest you stick to AE for this work but that's just me. Figure out how to make FCP's motion madness work later when you have more time to mess with it.

  • How to avoid jerky / stuttering motion

    Hello!
I am lost. I want to do just one simple thing: film my model train and publish it to youtube.
I started with a Sanyo HD1000 because it allowed direct import into iMovie 08 without transcoding. After playing around with it for a few days, I gave up and returned it - on the display of the Sanyo everything looked smooth, but as soon as the movie was on my Mac, the train seemed to move jerky. I figured it may have something to do with framerates (I'm in a PAL country, btw.) but changing from PAL to NTSC in iMovie didn't make any difference. Since even the EU model of the Sanyo records in NTSC(!) I thought that I should get a different camcorder anyway.
So now I have a Canon HF100 which does PAL. Same scene - but same problem. Playback on the internal Display is smooth, playback via composite-video-out on a CRT is smooth, but as soon as the video hits the Mac... game over, jerky motion again. After wasting hours of searching as well as trial & error, I now hope that someone here can point me in the right direction.
Here are the tools I have at hand:
    .) Canon HF 100 (PAL)
    .) iMovie 08
    .) Final Cut Express
    .) MPEG Streamclip
    .) Apple MPEG2 Quicktime Component
    .) Quicktime Pro
    .) Mac Pro, MacBook Pro
Here is what I want to do:
Transfer a video from the HF100 to my Mac, preserving smooth motion.
Test subject for easy reproduction: a car driving by. Looks even more jerky than the model train.
I really hope that someone can help me - I spent way too much money and time already to get this simple task done. And yes, HD camcorder to upload something to youtube is overkill, but I didn't plan to stop there - I am just stuck at this step.
    Regards,
    Rainer

    Hi Rainer,
Can MPEGstreamclip detect your camera and play your AVCHD footage?
If so use it to convert the footage to QT movies or DV and use FCP Express (better than iMovie)
to edit. Let us know if you get better result. You should.
    Best,
    G.

  • SMOOTH MOTION IN FILM INDUSTRY ALTHOUGH SHOOTING IN 24P......

    Hello guys!
I always had a general question about film making...
How professional Hollywood films can shoot their footages with such a smoth motion (without any jitters, strobing, blury e.t.c. artifacts) although they are shooting in 24p. 24p is not good especially when we have to deal with panning shots. Interlaced footage is much better in terms of smooth motion. Yet the films are perfect!! So the question is how they can achieve better and smoother motion although they shoot in progressive than in interlaced.
    Thanks.

Interlaced footage is much better in terms of smooth motion. Yet the films are perfect!! So the question is how they can achieve better and smoother motion although they shoot in progressive than in interlaced.
To answer your question directly, there are a couple of things that Hollywood does that you don't normally see when shooting on a smaller crew, smaller budget, etc...
For one, you need to achieve the much discussed shallow depth of field (DOF) over/above what a typical 24p video camera can do. This is a balance of lens focal distance and image sensor size. An old fashioned 35mm film camera has a "sensor" that is many times larger than an HD video sensor. The focal distance of the lenses is also generally a good big larger. Therefore, shallow DOF.
You also need to frame the shot and move the frame just like in Hollywood. Even when you're looking at a large panoramic vista shot, you'll notice that the image pans only very slightly, and many times the subject/foreground remains relatively stationary. This reduces stuttering substantially, to the point it's almost unnoticable (though you WILL notice it if you are actively looking for it). For tighter shots in motion (say, a full-body profile shot of the subject walking across a room), you're going to be panning or trucking at a speed that will cause strobing in the shot more than likely, and this only mitigated by keeping the subject spatially stationary in the frame throughout the move.
Another technique has to do with lighting, combined with the two previous techniques. If the relative luminosity of the foreground/subject is substantially greater than the background or other elements in the frame, the strobing is less noticeable on those secondary elements. Your eye becomes more focused on the foreground brighter objects - similar to the way DOF affects your perception - and so you just don't really notice that dark, strobing background so much.
The 24p strobing effect has very little to do with processing at all. However, converting between frame rates and formats CAN sometimes exacerbate all manner of video artifacts, including strobing in the shot. It's not the usual culprit though.
So hopefully you learned a new word today - TECHNIQUE - and you better understand that it's not as much Hollywood's technology that aids the quality of their product, as it is the TECHNIQUE involved in the production. That should be good news of course....technique can be learned, whereas much everything else about Hollywood's production aesthetic comes with an enormous price tag that most independent producers cannot afford.

  • How to do this in Motion 3 (or if it can be done at all)?...

Try as I might, I have not been able to figure out how to do this in Motion.
I have a 10-page pdf document. I've imported these pages separately into Motion. I want them to be spaced out and 'standing up' in Z-space.
I want a camera to move around, highlighting 3 different areas - one on each of three separate pages, as per this image I've made up.
(The whole purpose of this 10-20 second clip is just to give an impression of the content - and the 'highlights' - of the 10-page pdf document. I'm therefore not fussy about whether the text will look a bit fuzzy, etc, when the camera zooms in.)
What I want, in particular, is for the camera to begin in front of the pages (i.e. in front of page 1), wait for a few seconds, then move/sweep around the first couple of pages and zoom into the first red area (on page 3). I want it to wait there for a few seconds and then sweep around (or through) pages 4 and 5 and come to the next red area (on page 6), wait there a few seconds, and finally, zoom/dolly through again to the final red area on page 10 where it again waits for a few seconds. At the end, I want the camera to come back to where it was at the beginning, looking at the first of the 10 pages.
The spacing (in Z-space) does not have to be uniform. There could be a bigger gap in front of pages 3, 6 and 10. That's no problem.
If anyone can give me some pointers on how to go about doing this - or whether I'm barking up the wrong tree trying this at all in Motion - I would be very grateful. I have googled, scoured the Motion manual, etc, etc, but cannot figure out how to do it. Though I have quite a bit of experience of using FCP, I'm new to Motion. (What a program, btw!...)
    TIA,
    Hugh

    Howdy,
If you switch to the Top or Perspective views, you will be able to see the camera's animation path and edit (and add points to) it.
The animation method I'd most recommend is to use the Motion Path behavior with the speed set to Custom. This lets you define the camera's path and then you can easily animate its progress along that path by keyframing the behavior's Custom Speed value. This makes it really easy to keyframe changes in speed, such as having your camera hesitate at each image.
Or you can even use a Motion Path behavior per segment of the camera's journey. This allows you to have more flexibility with editing the timing in the Timeline.

how do I create 2 motion tweens for one line of text?  the text needs to "fly-in-right", I can do that, then it needs to "fly-out-bottom" again, I can do that, but not on the same line of text...any ideas...

    my question
1- there is any way to assign the Fetch process to specific region so the process take all item in these region only.
2- how can create manual process to fetch row into specific items in page ( i tray these code
    SELECT col1, col2, col3 ....
    INTO :P1_ITEM1, :P1_ITEM, :P1_ITEM...
    FROM table
WHERE id = :P_id ) but no data retrieve .
I do not think that it is possible to have more than one Automated Row Fetch process in a given page. See the thread:
ORA-01403: no data found : Unable to fetch row multiple automated row fetch
On your second question, the manual process should work provided:
P_ID has a value when the process executes. You can do it this way:
    i. Make this process as a on-load After/Before header process
ii. Make sure that P_ID page item has value when the process executes (set it from another page or before the pl/sql process executes)

  • How to create creative, unique "motion" typography

    Hello Apple Support Community friends,
Please bear with me, I am new with Motion 5 along with Final Cut Pro X. I would like to learn how to create interesting use of "motion" typography in Motion 5. And how to import the finished Motion project file into Final Cut Pro X.
I plan to put in some unique motion typography in different footages, and combine them in one Final Cut Pro X.
Can anyone help me to point me as to how to do this way? I also would like to import some of Adobe Photoshop files of creative typography files (also which file works best in that case... .TIFF or .PSD)
Please give me some guideline and steps to make it work. Then I will be doing some series of experiements to figure out what works, and what's not.
Any assistance and help would be deeply, deeply appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Brian
P.S. I am trying to find a good handbook on Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5, and some sort of theory and practice... so that I do the right approach, not the wrong approach all the way. BTW, I am Deaf. Thanks once again.

    Bonjour GFXZen,
The easiest way to get your text into FCPX is to start with a blank Final Cut Title in Motion.  Once you save it, it will show up in the Title Browser in Final Cut Pro X. Of course you can utilize text in any of the blank starting files, so don't think you are limited by the blank project names. Like I said this is just a good starting point.
As for the file format question, you can use Photoshop to create images (or text) and then import those into Motion as PSDs or TIFFs. Keeping the images as PSD will give you some advantages, especailly if you expect to go back and make revisions, but if you are creating simple elements, either one will work (I'll let others argue about which is "better".) Layered PSDs are also popular because people use them for basic layout befor animation. Once you've created it you just import it or drag and drop it into Motion.  Then animate.
To give you an example to that of footage I saw on, I believe on vimeo the other night. It is very intriuging and interesting, indeed. Very simplicity and efficacy. I really enjoyed them. I love the use of typography with motion matching done in it. Hopefully that you understand what I am saying. I have over 700 footages of my recent European vacation, both by land and sailing on cruise from Spain to Italy on a 12-days vacation. Of course, I don't plan to include all of these 700 clippings into one large project inside Final Cut Pro X and/or Motion 5. Definitely would like to do lot of interesting experiments with interesting use of typography along with motion matching.
Example of what I really like and enjoyed this one:
    Live The Language in London

I like anything that is simplicity with ease. Always like things simple with specific message come across at all once.
-Any Motion 4 tutorials you can find (Google is your friend).  Motion 5 builds on the previous version, the UI is different but you should be able to apply any techniques in older tutorials to Motion 5.
I didn't say I have Motion 4, I have Motion 5. I don't really think anything that made in Motion 4 into Motion 5 are doable, attainable and workable nor editable. I prefer to focus on Motion 5. I get this impression that any legacy files edited in Final Cut Pro Studio, for example, won't work in Final Cut Pro X. Therefore, I assume that it applies the same issue with any legacy Motion 4 files into Motion 5. Or am I misaken just about Motion 4 vs Motion 5. Of course GUI interface between Motion 4 and 5, it is totally different engine. Totally different between Final Cut Pro X vs legacy Final Cut Pro Studio.
As for Google, I did some research, and wasn't sure where to start with. Because there isn't much of anything related to Motion 5. All I see mostly related to Adobe Effects and some with Apple Motion 4, so forth. I also own Adobe Creative Suite CS5.5 Master Collection (upgraded to Master Collection from CS5 Design Premium as I own Design Premium for years). I used to do some creative stuff with Adobe Flash (at the time, it was formerly Macromedia long before Adobe acquired formerly Macromedia).
Mark Spencer is a well respected trainer and he's got plenty of free and paid tutorial, look at some of the MacBreak videos, I know he's covered Typography tricks there.
As for Mark Spencer and Apple Motion website, I see that was included in Apple resource, I believe. The problem is that all of his educational trainings and materials are not closed captioned. I don't see much of Motion 5-related topics. I suspect that he would develop some new educational trianing related to Motion 5 and Final Cut Pro X, and some cases with Adobe Premiere CS5.5 and After Effects CS5.5.
As for term of expermiments, I love to do lot of experiments with my photography stuff. This also includes experiments with all kinds of fine arts paper outputs and all. So, I am not afarid to experiement new stuff with Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5.
In closing, you mentioned understanding the fundamentals is especially very true. Thank you for your help and assistance. I would love to have others' perspective and insights.
    Have an amazing summer day!

  • How to preserve manually maintained Hierachy?

    Gurus,
How to preserve manually maintained Hierachy in parenth1. We are maintaining some much data manually for BPC only with hierarchy. Problem is every time when we load the hierarchy from BW system the manually maintained hierarchy gets wiped out.
We don't want to maintain BPC only hierarchy as seperate parenth2. I read this article Understanding how to Preserve Manually maintained Alternate Hierarchies with the new BPC Data Manager Package to Load from BW Hierarchies but this is maintaining as seperate parenth2 or 3.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can not maintain the hierarchy in BPC and load from BW, it will be wiped out every time.
What we did was that we created a new custom hierarchy in BW with the extra nodes.

  • How does Media Manager handle Motion Projects within the Sequence being cop

How does Media Manager handle Motion Projects within the Sequence being copied?
I've highlighted my sequence, opened Media Manager, and copied it to another drive. When I open up the sequence in it's new project, the rendered Motion Project plays within my sequence but it won't let me go back into this Motion Project to make changes. I tried starting over. This time I highlighted the actual motion sequence and clip that is created within FCP after sending something to Motion and copied those to the new drive. When I went into the newly created 'media' folder and double clicked on the motion project it launched. It looked liked it was going to play but while my crops moves and borders were there, the filmed material is shown as a freeze frame for the duration of the motion project.
I did this with and without 'including master clips within selection'. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is there anyone who knows the answer to this? Thanks.

  • How to preserve my chained backtrace

    Hi friends,
This is a peculiar problem where in the websphere created stub file for my stateless session ejb is creating a

How to preserve battery life ~ used to last all day, now it runs out by lunchtime

I would advise updating to iOS 7. It might improve your battery and the bugs are worked out by now.
If not wanting to update because of the new look, here are some tips:
-Turn off bluetooth when not needed.
-Connect to wifi and turn off cellular data when possible.
-When not around wifi, turn wifi off.
-Keep your screen at around 50% brightness.
-Disbale certain apps or features in Settings<Privacy<Location Services if they are not necessary.
-Close out of apps in the multitasking bar.
-Enable airplane mode when you plan on not using your phone for a while.
Hopefully these tips help you. If your battery does eventually get too bad, you can get it changed out by apple. If youve had your device for under a year, you can take it into an Apple store and theyll give you a new phone in return. Have a good night and good luck!

  • How to preserve or embedded history in photo when exporting?

Does anyone know how to preserve a photo develop history when exporting to new folder so that editing can continue?

Thanks Jim and DJ - perhaps my process needs to change. I use a folder structure within each photo shoot.  Capture (for all raw files) - Master (for working photos that are being edited / developed) - and finally an Output folder for photos being printed or posted to web etc. I export to each. I understand that you can always go back to the original raw capture or any point in the history but sometimes I want to compare different editions of develop settings for an image against each other while preserving both. When using a copy of an image the develop settings only start at time of copy and likewise when using an exported image the history starts from the export going forward
What I want to do is take photos from the various Master folders that have develop changes to them and move or copy them to another folder; as example a "2015 Art Show folder" for an upcoming photo exhibit etc. and then do additional develop changes specific for the Art Show  - being able to see the previous develop settings would be useful during this edit phase and you could continue to work in the one folder without needing to hunt around to numerous folders all over Lightroom
I hope that explains what I am trying to do, I appreciate any ideas you may have
    Thanks,
    Paul
