How to put backed-up data where it belongs

so here's my problem:
after a horrible experience of a crashed hard drive and going through all the drama of getting the data recovered, i am sitting here with my laptop, which has a fresh installation of OSX 10.4, and an external hard drive with the recovered data on it. i want to move ALL the data that was recovered onto the new hard drive, system files and all, without tediously dragging each file to its respective location (a task that would not only be long and difficult, but probably beyond my knowledge). here is what i have planned right now...
i've restarted the laptop in target disk mode and plugged it into another Powerbook (same model). i also plugged in the external hard drive, which now has a disk image on it created from the recovered data (which i should mention is organized exactly as it was as an HD). from what i've read, i think i should be able to open Disk Utility and select "Restore", using the disk image as the source and the target disk laptop as the target. however, since this process will entail erasing the target disk, i would very much like to have some assurance that this will work before i give it the final click.
does anyone have any experience with this? any success stories or alternate solutions?
thanks,
~matt

If you still have a backup listed in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, use it to restore from, described here:

How to delete back up data in iCloud?

    From previous posts:
If you mean backed up in your iCloud backup, you can delete the backup by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, touch your backup and tap Delete Backup, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on again.
If you mean data synced to your iCloud account like contacts and calendars, you can either delete if from your device or go to icloud.com on your computer and delete it there.

how to put back onscreen keyboard?

    Hi,
I also wanted to get a number of files back out of the trash, but the Put Back option wasn't available.
I tried everything I could find in this forum with no success, then I found something that WORKED:
    1/ Open Trash window
2/ Open another Finder window with the folder you want to return the items to (maybe create one if there are multiple destinations - sort out later)
3/ Select the files in Trash that need putting back, then drag them to the other finder window.

  • Help, how to restore backed-up data from old 3GS to my new 3GS?

Hi I recently got a replacement phone, and when i synced it to iTunes, the prompt to restore my backed-up data came up. However when I tried to restore, it prompted me to update my new phone's software to 3.1 first.
So now, after updating my software, how do I restore the data from my old phone?
Coz the first prompt does not appear anymore.
    Would appreciate your feedback, thanks!

Upgrade to 3.1 first, do not sync or backup. After you upgrade, reconnect & select restore from previous backup & all your data will be put back on the new phone.
When you right click on your phone under devices in the right column, one of your choices will be restore from backup.

  • How to put back html tags

Hi, I have a program that reads an html file, parses the html tags, now I execute code, and then would like to append the original file with my results...
How would I put back in the html code that I parsed out? Or would I have to go through it & search for where the information ends, like right before the </body> tag, and then write in html code there...
    What do u think?

yes, what I did, was read in each line, parse and put into a new StringBuffer... and finally save this into an ArrayList to manipulate it in the program...
What I'm doing now, is trying to rewrite the html file, by
PrintWriter cout = new PrintWriter (new
                                  FileWriter ("scores.html"));
    and then
    cout.print("<html>");
    etc, etc...
and fill in the scores as
    cout.print(<li>);
    cout.print(ArrayList.get(i)); //the saved score
    etc.
Right now, this isn't writing to the html file, so I wonder if PrintWriter is the right thing to use...
    Thanx for ur help!

  • How to get back the data from 'AddressBook.data.previous' ?

Hi! First of all: After using iSync all my address book data were duplicated, and I deleted all duplicated data manually. Then, I resetted the iSync data under 'Advanced' in '.Mac Sync Preferences'. Unfortunately, iSync deleted all my AddressBook data. I found a file named 'AddressBook.data.previous' and another file named 'AddressBook.data.beforesave' in my 'home folder/Library/Application Support/AddressBook'. Looking carefully into that file, I saw all the data I lost before in it! - Thus, how can I restore that data back into my AddressBook now? Does anyone knows some help for me? Thank you for answering! - Greetings, Gisela

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You only have a very limited opportunity to recover your data this way. You should make sure that the Address Book application is not running, then drag the AddressBook.data file to your desktop or to the trash. Duplicate the AddressBook.data .previous file, and rename it AddressBook.data by removing the trailing <.previous> string. Then, launch the Address Book.
The application will read the contents of this renamed file, and display your contact records. You should regularly back up your contact records using the built-in Back up Address Book… option under its File menu. A similar option is available in iCal.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Sorry, but it is highly likely that your data is already lost...so there is nothing to backup now. This simply proves the point that there are two kinds of computing device users...those who have lost data...and those who will. Backups before things go wrong are simply not optional.

  • How to put back in XCode 4.5.x all provisioning files under devices?

How do i replace/put back all provisioning profiles that I have accidently deleted and start over from scratch with the profiles? I am using macbook air with OS X 10.8.2. Any help will be appreciated and helpful to a beginner developer to this Mac OS X platform.

Here's one more bit of information from the Console:

9/30/12 10:09:32.456 AM mdworker32: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
I see these messages repeated periodically in the Console, output by mdworker.  Do these messages indicate some kind of MS Outlook plugin problem that might be preventing Spotlight from working?  I'm running Outlook for Mac 2011 version 14.2.4 (120824).  Bear in mind the exact same Outlook version was running without any trouble before my Lion 10.7.5 reinstall, and works just fine on an older MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  Spotlight worked OK on this machine (before my 10.7.5 reinstall) and works just fine on my 10.6.8 MacBook Pro.

  • How are you backing up data? (Movies, Photos, Music, etc.)

Wondering how people are backing up their photos, home movies, and music.
I personally am starting to run out of hard drive space on my external HD and wondering is just buying hard drives the best way to archive? Currently I have Media Files (photos, home movies, and music) and various documents backed up from my iMac to these three methods:
A: An external drive. My main backup of stuff.
B: I have another External HD which I only use for family photos.
C: About every two months I archive data to DVD's (two copies each) and that goes into the big box in the closet.
D: FTP Started to use FTP for stuff, since I have 100 gigs of online space. But this is really inefficient as my DSL speeds aren't that great. So I have abandoned this option.
Is there any other method you use that I haven't thought of? Something that would last me the next 4-5 years. I know HD DVD is coming, and HD's are getting cheaper daily. But at this rate I will be buying and transfering everytime a new media format comes out.
    Cheers.

  • How to get back WhatsApp data after hard reset. Backup disappeared

So after suffering phone issues for months but being a new mum and having no time to reset my phone to factory default, so I could send it away, I finally last night thought I'd backed up everything, ready to reset!
All my photos and videos are on google cloud and my 64gb SD card too. I'd backed up my SMS with an app and backed up all app data to Google. I'd also used the Sony backup/restore app to backup all my apps and I thought I'd backed up WhatsApp in its settings/chats/backup.
I know WhatsApp makes a backup at 4am every night in case you reinstall it and so I thought I was fool proofed and reset/erased internal memory.
On reinstaling, Google automatically started downloading apps again, which I didn't get, as I thought my backup from the Sony phone app would restore everything so i cancelled that.
WhatsApp hadn't installed yet so I installed it from the play store and it said it could restore my data, so I said yes! BUT it restored a backup from June 26th 2015, not from the last day as I'd have thought from 4am backups!
So I uninstalled WhatsApp and went to restore from the app backup file, which I could see had a backup of WhatsApp from 1st August 2015. Prob was it kept crashing on restoring the opera browser. It completed once but WhatsApp hadn't installed. So I ran it over and over. It still crashed on Opera.
So I used Es file explorer to unhide files and found the Backup on my SD card with 1st August and inside could see WhatsApp. I cut the opera backup file from the back up folder and pasted it somewhere safe to see if the restore would not run. But when I went back to the Backup/restore app and clicked restore, my 1st August back up folder had disappeared! I went back to Es file explorer and sure enough, the folder was gone from the apps backup folders!
It isn't in any recycle bin and now I think I've lost a month's worth of WhatsApp messages, which are really important to me! When I get chance, I'm going to put the SD card in my Mac and see if I can find the file there but has anyone got any advice on why the folder disappeared, when I only cut the opera backup from the folder?

P.s, all hidden files are shown in es file explorer as this backup folder was hidden originally. It has a '.' in front. So I'm pretty sure the folder it's gone, but as I've not erased my phone again, shouldn't the folder be somewhere in my SD card still and how can I find it using my Mac?
