How to remotely fix computer in Yosemite

I am often called upon to fix my 83 year old father's iMac. I would love to be able to somehow remote into his computer and fix it that way vs having to drive all the way to his house.
Is there a way of doing this?
I don't quite understand the difference between Screen Sharing and Remote Management.
Help? Pretty please?

You can easily set up Screen Sharing to work over the Internet without additional software.  You just need to ensure both your computer and his computer are running OS X 1.7.5 or later.  Open the System Preferences window, click the iCloud icon, sign into your iCloud account on both machines, check Use Back to My Mac (which you may want to be the only thing checked on your father's computer) and go through the setup process. Then when you use your Mac, his other Mac will appear under the Shared section of the sidebar in Finder, and you can connect to its screen over the Internet to control.

Look at TeamViewer.com (it is "Free" for personal use).  It is cross platform, so even if you do not have a Mac available, you can still connect with your Father's iMac, including from a Mac, an iPad, or Windows.  Connections are encrypted for security.
Remote Management is for use with the Apple Remote Desktop application that is designed to manage a classroom full of Mac, or a small office.
Screen Sharing is more along the lines of what you intend to do.
You can use Messages (or iChat) to establish a connection and then startup a Screen Sharing session.
If you put your Father's iMac on your Apple ID, then you can use System Preferences -> iCloud -> Back to My Mac to establish a Screen Sharing session.

  • How can I fix a downloading Yosemite, which is frozen?

I downloaded Yosemite last night and this morning all I have is the Apple logo and a download bar which is stuck on 1/3 completion, after the initial reboot.. This is a little colored ball, going around in circles on the scree.  What can I do to fix this?  If I turn it off, is it going to crash my entirely (NEW) iMac?

It turns out that I needed to completely erase my hard drive and reinstall OS X Maverick, then reinstall all my files and programs from my back-up drive.  To do this, I needed a techie support, who helped me log in from the internet connection, as this was the only way.  From here we accessed the OS X Utility folder to delete the hard drive, then reinstall the operating system.

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

After downloading the new OS X Yosemite my computer has been lagging, how can I fix this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Since adding Yosemite, my bookmarks bar shows bookmarks from a different computer (my work computer). How do I fix this?

I just upgraded to Yosemite, and now I see that my bookmarks bar in Safari has all of the content from my work computer. Same with my reading list. Eeek! I want to keep these separate.  How do I fix this?

    Hi ..
It sounds like the Mac that's just been upgraded to Yosemite has Safari enabled in iCloud to sync bookmarks and the reading list.
Open System Preferences > iCloud then deselect:  Safari

  • Halfway through the OS X Yosemite update it says I am not connected to the internet (when I know I am because I can search through the app store). How can I fix this? I cannot get on Safari because it requires an update to Mac OS X 10.9 or later.

Halfway through the OS X Yosemite update it says I am not connected to the internet (when I know I am because I can search through the app store). How can I fix this? I cannot get on Safari because it requires an update to Mac OS X 10.9 or later.

Just to be clear. You have downloaded the Yosemite installer. However you say while it's updating you get the error you are not online. This is confusing since you shouldn't be able to use your computer in the process of updating.
Exactly where do you see you need to 10.9 to get on Safari?

  • How can i fix Connection issues with back to my mac since yosemite upgrade.

Ok I have been having nothing but problems with back to my mac since the upgrade. both machines are using yosemite and I have even reinstalled yosemite on both still having connection issues. anyone else know how I can fix this? I get one of 2 error messages one that says there is a problem connecting and i should make sure screen sharing is active and then another that says the server does not exist. So far to get it working it involves restarting back to my mac or both macs. This is not a good fix since once I disconnect and try to reconnect a few hours later it does it all over again. I am currently in France and needless to say my parents are starting to get really annoyed with constantly having to do things on there end so I can remote into my iMac.Before the yosemite upgrade I maybe had to do this once or twice.

What I have done is open Disk Utility, Repair Permissions, and do that more than once if it returns a lot of errors in the permissions.  Then Restart the Mac.
Also, go to System Preferences > Spotlight and try turning off a couple settings such as search suggestions...these things are taking a lot of resources now.

  • My ipod disabled itself for 23 million minutes. How can I fix it if I don't have itunes on my computer?

My ipod disabled itself for 23 million minutes. How can I fix it if I don't have itunes on my computer?

A computer with iTunes is not required
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You need the iPod and iPad conencted to the interned and FindMyiPod turned on on the iPod an the iPad need to have the FindMyiPhone app installed. That now requires iOS 7 on the device.
You can also wipe by on a computer/s browser, going to icloud.com>FindMyiPhone

my computer logs me off a few seconds after i log on. How do i fix it?

Thanks Linc, for the response. I did try rebooting in safe mode and it still blew up, then I logged in remotely and saw the above in the crash logs so I tried deleting one of the dock's config files, since that seemed to fix a similar issue for someone else. But that did not fix my problem, either. That's when I tried reinstalling the OS over the old install, which also did not fix the problem.
But wonders of wonders, it is now working! I can't say for sure why, but it seems to have automagically cured itself. Or, maybe not so automagically. I did install an OS X update just before I was able to successfully log in, so maybe that's what fixed it.
So, I still don't know what caused it; I'm not sure what fixed it, but the experience convinced me to get a network drive and set up TimeMachine.

  • ITunes is repeatedly asking me to 'Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads'.  How do I fix this?

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and using iTunes v. 12.0.1.26.  Whenever I open iTunes after initially asking for my password  ('Sign-in Required'), it repeatedly asks me to 'Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads'.  No matter how many times I enter the correct password it keeps popping up until I hit cancel at least 4 times.  Additionally, now when I attempt to make a purchase in the iTunes store it does the same thing preventing me from purchasing anything.  It repeats the 'Sign In to the iTunes Store' log-in prompt and no matter how many times I enter my CORRECT password it will not accept it.  Why is iTunes doing this and how can I fix it?

I have this same problem and it drives me crazy. I've posted a topic about this, with no replies. In my case I'm pretty sure it's because in iTunes Preferences/Store/Automatic Downloads, I have Music-Apps-Books checked.
But this is what happens to me everytime I open iTunes:
Automatic Downloads password window pops up / I put in password
Immediately again, password window pops up / I put in password
Now I'm fine until I close iTunes and open again
If I don't feel like putting my password in two times and cancel, if you cancel the window 3 times, it goes away.
    What I don't understand:
Why isn't the Automatic Downloads password stored in Keychain
Why does it ask for the password two times

  • I updated my computer to the new software and now the iPhoto has a circle with a line through it.  When I try to update, it pops up to say "These apps cannot be accepted by your apple id". Then will say "update unavailable with this apple id" how do i fix

I updated my computer to the new software and now the iPhoto has a circle with a line through it.  When I first try to open it the pop us says: "You can't use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X. Version: 9.2.1"  When I try to update, it pops up to say "These apps cannot be accepted by your apple id - These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID and they will be available in that Apple ID's purchases list.  If you don't have access to that Apple ID and want to receive future updates, you will need to purchase the application".  I checked and there is nothing under the "purchases" in my App store.  Then will say "update unavailable with this apple id - This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or canceled." Then the third pop up says "We could not complete your request. There was an error in the App Store.  Please try again".  Just want to know how do to fix.

After I upgraded to Mavericks I was also having this message when I tried to update. There was a previous post about this problem which offered this simple solution which worked for me:

Got it! Thanx.  What I did was go to my account, check that they had my new ID and Password which they did, then hit reset button. All fixed.

  • I just bought an iPhone and it seemed to be working well until I went to sync it to my computer and it synced under my old ipod. Now when I go to text it sends as my email and I can't change it to my phone number or anything. How can I fix this?

Pretty much what the title says but if for some reason it doesn't...
I just got an iPhone 4 today and it was working well until I went to hook it up to my computer and it asked me if I wanted to set it up as a new phone or back up all my stuff from my old ipod.
I accidentally clicked that and it had pretty much ruined my phone, deleted all contacts everything. I then did a reset through itunes and now when I send a text message it sends as my email instead of my phone number.
I've gone to settings->messages and turned off and on imessage and didn't fix it.
    How do I fix this?

Yeah, you fried the phone big time.
Go into iMessage settings and set the Caller ID to your phone number.

I am experiencing problem (the installation does not start) when I try to install ArchiCAD 17 Educational on my mac. I am using Yosemite. How can I fix it?

You need to contact the developer/manufacturer directly to determine if their product is compatible w/Yosemite.  It is not listed on their system requirement website:
    Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard*
Note: ArchiCAD 17 is the last version of ArchiCAD to support Mac OS X 10.6
Only case insensitive file-system volumes are supported.
