How to set software updates back to Apples server?

Hi,
I just started using OSX Server. I will be using it to perform hundreds of netboot installs of Leopard which I have working. I also want to use it to serve software updates which I also have working on one machine using the
defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL URL
as these are unmanaged computers. Not all the machines will stay local after the work is done.
How do I reset Software Update to use Apple's software update servers?
Thanks,
Shawn

OK, I found how to reset the server by deleting the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file in the user/library/preferences folder.
However I ran into another problem. I was testing software updates on a 10.4.x machine and it works fine. However I ran into problems on 10.5.x
The defaults command listed above changes the user version of com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist which is fine for 10.4.x but apparently not 10.5.x
To get this working in 10.5.x I coped the plist file from the User/library/preferences folder and dropped in in the /Library/Preferences folder. Now I see software update connecting to the local server to check for software updates.

  • Mac OSx V10.6 - Change software update back to apples servers

    Hi All
Wonder if anyone can help. I have a Macbook pro running snow leopard 10.6. This was once connected to our 10.5 xserve but was quickly removed as it would not be used on the server. However, after this the chaps who set it up seemed to have set the software updates to look at our server. Of course, even when connected to the network, our server will not run 10.6 updates (i did read a thread here on how to force it to, but dont feel confident enough to try)
I am trying to work out how to set this machine to start re-using the swscan.apple.com server so the user can take the machine home and update quicktime and other apps which are causing the issues.
I have tried using the latest ISet SUS but doesnt seem to want to view swscan.apple.com. ISet seems to work, if I set the server to be my 10.5 xserve it will connected and gives the error that the server does not support 10.6
    Any tips would be great
    Thanks

    Hi,
Open Terminal and enter following command:
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
To check if it was written:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    This'll do the trick.

You can reset the password with the install disk.

Several users are reporting a server problem with Software Update. Why not wait and try again later today or tomorrow to see if the problem is resolved.
If the problem is on your computer then give this a try:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist where "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

  • How do i software update?

How do i software update im stuck on OS X 10.5.8 and i cant update and when i click on software update it says im up to date in software,
what do i do to get it moving?

Snow Leopard should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

  • Is there any way to set Software Update to ignore a particular packages?

If Software Update identifies a new version of something which I don't want to install, is there any way of making it ignore that update when it checks next time.
It's not unusual for minor updates to include no security fixes, no fixes for defects which affect me and no additional functionality. In these cases I'd rather not update but I haven't been able to find anyway to stop Software Update from prompting me to install the same version every time it checks.

    Thank you for the reply.
That menu item just sets Software Update to ignore that particular version does it? I did spot it but the dialog which it opens says "You will no longer be notified of new versions of this update." which is not a very clear message but "new versions" made me think that clicking "OK" would make it ignore all future updates for the component and not just the particular version I want to skip.
Sorry, maybe my original post wasn't very clear that it I just want to skip versions I don't see a need to install, not permanently ignore certain apps/components.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

  • Set Software Update to never check on client?

For now, rather than figure out Software Update service, which seems more complicated than some other services, I'm going to push updates out over ARD to my clients (>25 Macs). I'm setting up the managed prefs for these clients using Workgroup Manager, and I would like to have the clients never check for software updates. I can't seem to find a managed pref to set this. Does it exist? Or, can anyone tell me the key and other settings to just manually enter this by hand in Workgroup Manager? I can't seem to find the check frequency setting anywhere on my personal Mac (not in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate nor in the ~/ version). Is there another way to prevent client machines from automatically checking Apple's SU servers short of making that change on every client individually? I guess I could set it before making my NetRestore image, but I'd rather do it through Workgroup Manager.

I don't know how to do it through Managed Client, though I expect that you probably can.
You can do it manually in Terminal.app using 'softwareupdate --schedule off'. To do multiple systems, use ARDs Send UNIX Command function.

  • How to undo software update in Nokia x6 and recove...

A friend had a software update done on my Nokia x6 - 8GBand now it is as good as new. All the data, files, photos and videos in it are gone. I had not backed them up as the software update wasn't intentional. It is really heartbreaking to lose all the precious data and files saved from all the past years. I tried all data recovery tools advertised on the internet but I could get nothing. Please please please someone tell me there is  a way to get back my phone in its original state before the software update. Or atleast a way to recover the files. Any tech wizard who can help with solutions? please help. I'm really desperate at this point as is evident...

The update was done by a service centre where my friend had given my phone for a minor repair. When we asked them if it is possible to recover the lost data, they said it is impossible. Is it possible to recover the data if the update was done in nokia suite? If so where will the data be stored? I don't know how the service centre people updated the software. should I go ask them again?

  • How to Disable Software Updates

One of my customers, a small school district, has an Xserver running OS X 10.6.6. All of the student and teacher MacBooks are also on this version. The district is deploying a program called DeepFreeze on the student laptops which will prevent them from saving any and all changes to the laptop. They have local administrative rights, but when the laptop is rebooted, it is like they never logged in. Therefore, Apple Software Updates are useless and really undesirable. They'll be downloading the same updates everyday. They can turn DeepFreeze off and run the updates, but this will not be on a scheduled basis. Is there a way through Workgroup Manager that I can disable the updates for the student group?

We turn that off in system preferences for each local account. I even build a DEFAULT template with it turned off. It works fine until we image the machine.  Any new machine with that image, the Apple updates, Bluetooth are turned back on!!!
How do you keep them turned off after a restore? The original machine with the master image still works. they only turn back on after using the image of the master.  Very annoying that every app on  a mac has to search for updates all the time, then multiply that times a 1000 machines and a 15m internet connection. Do the math.
if anyone knows how to KEEP the settings after a restore, let me know.

  • How to verify software update?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and did a successful fire wire brain transfer from my Powerbook. In the course of setting up my MacBook, I tried Software Update several times, and each time got a message that it couldn't find the update server. My network connection is working fine. This has now been going on for several days, and I doubt that the update server has been down that whole time. I'm experiencing the same thing with my Powerbook, which I've successfully updated numerous times with Software Update. I'm wondering if a configuration file got corrupted on the Powerbook, and then was transferred in corrupted state to the MacBook. What sort of sanity checks can I do at this point? Thanks!

My question doesn't concern so much the process of updating one computer from another as how to diagnose the problem when Software Update perpetually reports a network problem. Does anyone have any insights on how I might diagnose this, given that it's been five days now, my network seems fine, and I have no firewalls? The added information that I can give is that I have not yet succesfully done any software update from my new MacBook, after five days. Thanks!

  • Software update back to Apple

    Hey everyone,
How can I point my client machines back to Apple's site? I used Software Update Enabler to point them to my server but I want to point them back to Apple and I don't know the address. Can anyone help?

Perhaps you've already discovered this but the Software Update Enabler has an update that is supposed to fix this bug.

    Hi guys!!
First of all, please, excuse my english......i know it's the worst possible and will try to develop it.
    My question is the following.
The hard disk of my xServe is almost full and I need to delete the old Apple Software Udates that it contains (some of them are from 2005!!)
And I don´t know how to make it!!
I`ve uncheck the "automatically enable copied updates" option in Server Admin and I´ve check-in the "Purge unused/legacy software", but i don´t know how to delete the oldest Apple Software Updates because I don´t know where the **** are they!!
    Thank's in advance from Spain.
Any help will be very wellcome
    J.

    You could try what
s in <http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9289958#9289958>, or, as this is a new setup which isn't in use, you could just nuke the system and reinstall and this time use the correct DNS name.

  • How to track Software Update server activity

Does anyone know how to access usage information on the Software Update Server. I don't see a way to see who and when updated what software on the server. Thanks.

    Thanks.
    - In Console.app, I can see "swupd_access.log", but it does not give an user fiendly view of who updated what software at what time.
    - I can only view "SoftwareUpdateServer.log" in ServerAdmin, which does not give out detailed user information, just repeated lines of "Main Sync"
I wish Apple can build a nice report in their Software Update Server.
