How to setup NTP service in server 2012 R2 to synch with an external NTP server
Server 2012 R2 Std as DC
I have looked at the blogs on setup and could not make sense of them. I did this easily on SBS2008 before I migrated to 2012 R2.
What is the process to establish the DC server 2012 R2 as the time source. Right now it is BIOS clock and I wish to move to NTP as the time source.
Thanks for your help

Hi JohnLenz,
You can use the following command line and refer the following KB:
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:<IP_or_FQDN_of_the_time_source>
Note: please replace "<IP_or_FQDN_of_the_time_source>” with the IP address or FQDN of your NTP server.
Net stop w32time
Net start w32time

What will be the IPV6 values to configure boundary?Depending on how the clients connect use the IPv6 prefix of their 6to4, Teredo, and/ or IP-HTTPS tunnel. Just keep in mind that it could become a long list...

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
Physical equpiment,
1 pc which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine. This machine i would like to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study 8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2, which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group. Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure. as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup, then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience. and i would prefer to have my as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me"If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group. Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to
connect that pc to the domain."
It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain. A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101 I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop. But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it. I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.
"Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines."
Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

I want to use WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2 in an environment that has only Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 servers in production. I currently have one WSUS server setup on 2008 R2 that will serve in one geographic location and the WSUS Server 2012 R2 that
I looking to setup will be at a separate geographic location.
Has anyone tried this? Are there any problems one can expect? Is this a bad idea?Has anyone tried this?
Thousands!!! :-)
Are there any problems one can expect? Is this a bad idea?
No. Why would you think it might be?
Have you read the product documentation and familiarized yourself with the system requirements and support capabilities of the product?

Hi,
In the interest of just getting started and learning the basics of setting up TFS, I previously setup an IDE using a large workstation running Windows 8. I set up the required servers for TFS using VM's through Hyper-V. I am now transferring
everything to a new and separate physical server.
My question stems from a problem I had when I originally setup the TFS system the 1st time. I couldn't get SQL server to work using the Server 2012 R2 download from the subscription center. When I used Server 2012, it worked, so I proceeded that
way just to get going.
So now I'm setting things up anew on a new physical box, I want to ask up front, is there some difference in the R2 version that causes problems with either TFS or SQL server, or was there likely some oversight on my part when I did things the 1st time?
As an addendum to my question, I always assumed R2 merely means the Server software has progressed to a refined state and is ready for wide distribution and easy setup. I assumed that there are no differences between the Standard version and the R2
version. Is that understanding correct?
Thanks.Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your response. That's a great link. I don't recall seeing a page that is so clear and easy to read back when I was doing this the 1st time, but I probably just missed it. That helps.
I am/was using TFS2013 and VS2013. As I recall, my problem was getting SQL Server to work, but I thought asking this question on this forum was wiser because I figured everyone using TFS would be well familiar with these issues.
At any rate, it seems as though TFS2013 is fine with Server 2012 standard or R2.
I was using SQL Server 2012, and it also seems as though it works on R2:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx
Anyway, thanks for your support. I'll be trying this again and we'll see. -

How to setup word docs, converted to PDF on local drive with links to a second file at a page
how to setup word docs, converted to PDF on local drive with links to a second file at a page
Need to setup a set of word documents, converted to PDF that has links from one file to a second file at a given page.
I would like to setup a set of pdf documents, on the hard disk of a PC or Mac, that can be open with acrobat pro running on the same computer and have the link jump to, and open in a new window, in acrobat pro, to a given page of a second document in the set.
Is there a way to setup a link in word and the conversion to pdf that will result in a link that is equivalent to the acrobat link type you get when you add a link of the type Go to a page in another document?
Tools-Advanced Editing-Link tool, make a box
Check: Go to page view, Next (Create go to view dialog opens)
Open second document and go to page
Click “Create go to view dialog” to set up link
Result is a link, when view by link properties, with an action of
Go to a page in another document
File: C:\My Documents\second file.pdf
Page: 43
Zoom level: Custom
I got close but did not solve the problem:
I have a version that uses links to a website, using #page=43 at the end of the hyperlink.
That works but will only open to the page if is through the web browser, opening the acrobat reader plugin.
I need to open from a folder on the local harddisk (with relative links), in acrobat pro to the given page of the pdf, on a PC or a Mac.
I could bookmark each page “pagenumberxxx” and jump to the bookmark/page if that would get around some problem
Current Systems in use to create documents with links and view them:
Windows XP SP3
Word 2003 SP3
Acrobat 9 pro version 9.4.4
Or just to view them:
Mac OS 10 Lion version 10.7.4
Acrobat 9 pro version 9.5.1
(note I have limited understanding of Mac’s)
JohnNo. There seems to be no automated way to do it. You can of course go into the PDF and manually add links after you have converted to PDF, but that is what we want to avoid having to do. We want it to be automatic from the Word doc.

Just updated to my macbook pro to 10.8.2. ical not synching with my Exchange 2010 server. Worked flawlessly prior to the upgrade. Settings set to auto discover. I matched settings of a partner in my who is still using 10.7.1 without issues. Help!
Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location. -
Help, please! Any advice on how I link my new iMac and my new itunes software with existing external harddrive containing my entire itunes library?

It should be a matter of
Quiting iTunes first if it's running
Connecting your external harddrive to your Mac, use the Finder to browse to it
Find your iTunes folder on the ext HDD and double-click on iTunes Library.itl

How to configure terminal services in Windows 2012 server to make multiple connection simulteniously
Hi I am configuring a Windows Server 2012 in a way so that 10 user can access this server through remote desktop connection simultaneously. We have purchased 10 UserCal license for this server.
Please guide me step by step ho to configure this server?Server comes with 2 concurrent administrative RDP sessions. To enable it in server manager:
Click Yes on the pop-up message to enable the corresponding firewall rule.
To use more than 2 concurrent sessions, you need RDS. See this blog post
for how-to. Note that there's an RDS license required. This

Amateur question - how to setup iChat service?
"Make sure the user is a user or member of a group that's defined in the Open Directory search path of the iChat server."
How do I verify this?
I have created a user and the user is a member of the "chat server group", but I still can't connect to to the service.
Help please! =)Hello buckster,
I'm also trying to turn on a iChat Server and use it. The iChat service is apparently "E-Z" to turn on in Server Admin tool but something about the wording of "search path" for Open Directory users is throwing me.
I'm not new Mac OS Server ( 3+ years ) nor to using Open Directory or WGM or Server Admin but I'm being tripped up in the setup of users. I can't seem to figure out "search policy" and "search path". I get the basic idea but I apparently do not understand the sequence of creating a Search Path so that iChat Server can be accessed.
Basic Setup-
DNS on
LAN using 192.168.0.x
192.168.0.1 - server.LANlocal_domainname.net
WAN using 10.0.1.x (Wireless thru AirPortBase Station as Gateway and Firewall internet with port routing to 10.0.1.2 as needed. APB is the DHCP manager for Wireless) server.WANdomainname.com
alias to ichat > server on both interfaces.
DHCP on - Managing 192.168.0.x
iChat on with Host Domains=ichat.LANlocal_domainname.net & ichat.WANdomainname.com
Open Directory on >>>>Open Directory Master with LDAP Settings pointing to search base of the WAN based user group
dc=server,dc=WANdomainname,dc=com
(CHECKED) Enable Secure Sockets Layer
Certificate: Default
Binding
NO CHECKS
Security
NO CHECKS
Workgroup Manager: server.WANdomainname.com
Authenticated as DirectoryAdministrator to directory
: /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1
I've got 23 users and 6 Groups that I have used for different kinds of things.
Web Mail Access
Website Access
FileMaker Server Access
Application Server Access
etc.
and now I'd like get iChat working ....
I'm on the inside of a router (though that shouldn't matter, right?), no software firewall (Firewall Service is not On). For a start, all I'm trying to do is get two machines inside the LAN to chat with a Jabber client (iChat or Atrium). I keep getting indications that the server is not found.
Sorry if this seem lame but I would really appreciate a step by step of the set up of two users, one that is on another machine that is not directly controlled by the setup of Open Directory and WGM an another that is not the iChat Search as a client (as well as the server). I'd don't need lots of explaination but it would be really helpful to have a click by click for user, group, search path.
Thank You for your help.

How can I istall Windows Server 2012 on a computer with Windows Home Server
I have troubles to install Windows Server 2012 R2. Quite in the beginning of the install I get the following announcement:
"Remove the installation media and restart your Computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the Computer."
In the first resrart Windows Home Server is starting and I can't go on installing Server 2012.
How can I bypass this problem?
Best regards
Nikorios
NikoriosHello,
on the Windows Core machine itself follow:
Determine the index number for a Server with a GUI image (for example, SERVERDATACENTER, not SERVERDATACENTERCORE) with Get-WindowsImage-ImagePath<path to wim>\install.wim.
•Run Install-WindowsFeatureServer-Gui-Mgmt-Infra,Server-Gui-Shell –Restart –Source c:\mountdir\windows\winsxs

Hi,
I downloaded
Windows Server 2012 Evaluation Version recently. Actually, I wanted to check whether i could run Windows Phone 8 emulator on Win server 2012 using my core2duo (Non-SLAT PC). Now i wanted to activate the evaluated version by using product key of my
MSDN's student account. But its giving error when i enter my product key. I checked this article about converting evaluation version to full retail version. The article
says :
"If the server is a domain controller, you cannot convert it to a retail version. In this case, install an additional
domain controller on a server that runs a retail version and remove AD DS from the domain controller that runs on the evaluation version."
So kindly guide as to how I can install this additional domain controller and how to remove AD DS from domain controller. Currently, I have Dual Boot PC( win 8.1 and win server 2012).
Hoping to get a brief response....
Unless you have configured a whole lot of things into the DC running on the evaluation copy (should never install production on an evaluation copy), it would be simplest to start from scratch and reinstall.
Or, you simply go into Server Manager > Manage > Add Roles and Features to remove the AD role. Then you will be back to a workgroup server.
The evaluation version is good for 180 days plus three re-arms of 30 days each. So you can do a lot of experimenting with the evaluation copy without the need for using an MSDN key.

Hey guys...
Im a little bit confused... i wanted to download the newest hotfixes for SQL server 2012...
But the download for :
2983175 Cumulative update package 2 (CU2) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack
is only for the platform: x86 available ... but my SQL server 2012 is running in a x64 environment...
(when i checked the older cumulative updates... they're all only for x86.. can someone tell me why ? )
thanks and regards,
DominicThere doesn't exist an SQL Express "Standard". It's two different editions.
For Express there are three 32bit/64bit editions:
Express, Express with Tools and Express with Advanced Services.
Express with Tools is essentially Express with Management Studio Tools, Express with Advanced Services adds also BI (Business Intelligence) + Reporting Services.
As for where you can apply the cumulative update, on the link you can see this:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2, when used with:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Developer
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard

Server 2012 R2 cannot update from 2008 R2 WSUS server
Our WSUS server is on a 2008 R2 VM. Updates for all 2008 R2 and lower servers, and Windows 7 clients work fine. I have one Server 2012 R2 in production and it cannot check for updates. It gets 800b0001 as the error code. I can
click on check for updates from Microsoft, then it does reach out to the Internet, download and install updates.
I also tried from my Win 8.1 laptop and I get error 8024402C. Any idea's?I found in another thread the fix.
In regedit go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup and change "wYukonInstalled"
from a 1 to a 0.
Installer succeeds.
However now the Update Services console does not work. I get a connection error.
It's one thing after another with these things. I don't understand why Microsoft can't ever make something simple. IISReset did not cure this either.
The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.
The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,
Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.
