How to Setup to Develop a Site

Question

I've searched "test server" but none of the previous posts
actually has an answer. I'm hoping someone can put me on the right
track or point me to HOW-TO or tutorial documentation that will
help.
Here is the scenario:
Local: My windows XP machine running Dreamweaver 8 and no
server software.
Remote: My hosting provider (PHP/MySQL) with a URL:
http://k4vd.net/ and web root at
/public_html/
Testing: My hosting provider, same server as above. The
testing folder is /public_html/testing/k4vd/
I want to be able to edit my local files. Then when I press
F12 to test my changes, I want the appropriate files to be sent to
my testing server and run there. When testing is complete, I want
to move the final files to my main site. I don't really care if
they come from the testing or the local files as they should both
be synchronized by now.
Either I can't figure out the appropriate things to put in
the Manage Sites box or I'm misunderstanding the concept of the
testing server.
Here are my Manage Sites settings...
Local Info
Site Name: k4vd
Local Root Folder: D:\My Documents\k4vd\ (refresh local file
list automatically)
Default Images Folder: D:\My Documents\k4vd\images\
Links relative to: Document
HTTP address:
http://k4vd.net/
Case sensitive: unchecked
Cache: Enabled
Remote Info
Access: FTP
FTP Host: k4vd.net
Host Directory: /public_html/
Use Passive: checked
Maintain synchronization information: checked
Testing Server
Server model: PHP/MySQL
Access: FTP
FTP host: k4vd.net
Host directory: /public_html/testing/k4vd/
Use Passive: Checked
URL prefix:
http://k4vd.net/testing/k4vd/

I have done several sites where I am testing locally but
connecting with the
remote database. It's slower than having the database local,
but it has
worked OK for me.
