How to start sql

I'm new to sql. The info I've seen says to go to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, and then click
SQL Server Management Studio. Although we have SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, (Windows Vista), there isn't a listing for SQL Server in All Programs. Is there a way to connect to this server?
I want to use SQL to make a .bak backup of several files.
Thanks.

Hello,
Even if it has "Server" in it's name, it isn't. SQL Compact Edition
is only a .NET assembly for small local database files. See
SQL Server Compact at MSDN.
If you want to have a SQL Server, then download SQL Server Express
Edition (with Tools or Advanced Services!).

  • How to start sql developer(1.1) on mac osx

After download and unzip it, just double-click the sqldeveloper icon, doesn't it?
But after i double-click it, there is an icon on the bottom for a while, very soon. then it disappears.
Any help will be highly apprecaited!!!

    Hi
I've got the same error starting SQL Developer 1.1.2 on mac os 10.4.9. In my case this was because I've had a blank in the path.
I've initialy located my SQL Developer on a USB Stick with the name "no name" which was mounted on /Volumes/no name path to SQL Dev was /Volume/no name/oracle/sqldeveloper/......
After changing the name of the stick to noname the path has changed to /Volume/noname/oracle/sqldeveloper/.....
    and then everything worked fine.
An other hint, If you copy sqldeveloper.sh into sqldeveloper.command you may start the Developer with a double click.
By the way, I'm using the multiplattform package of the SQL Developer and put it on a USB Stick. I'm now able to take one copy of SQL Developer and Configuration with me and start it on Mac OS and/or Windows.

    Hi,
I agree with Erland. You need to verify and specify the correct path for the error log in Startup parameters.
    For example: -eC:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.n\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG
    To configure startup options
1.In SQL Server Configuration Manager, click SQL Server Services.
2.In the right pane, right-click SQL Server (<instance_name>), and then click Properties.
3.On the Startup Parameters tab, in the Specify a startup parameter box, type the parameter, and then click Add.
For example, to start in single-user mode, type -m in the Specify a startup parameter box and then click Add. (When you restart SQL Server in single-user mode, stop the SQL Server Agent. Otherwise, SQL Server Agent might connect first and prevent you from
    connecting as a second user.)
    4. Click OK.
    5.Restart the Database Engine.
    For more information, please see:

  • How to start sql developer

    Hi,
I installed the oracle 11 free version in my windows machine couple of days ago. I guess I have forgotten my SID. And now when I am trying to open a connection using sql developer, a dialog pops asking for connection, user, password etc. But I am not sure what to use for connection field. I thought may be I have to use the SID entered during installation. But I have already forgotten that SID. In that circumstances, how to connect to a database using sql developer? I would really appreciate some help.
    Thanks.

another way to find out your sid could be to just look in your database folders
    ...\product\11.1.0\db_1\computername_sid
os if your computername is oracleserver and your service id is orasid then your folder should be
    ...\product\11.1.0\db_1\oracleserver_orasid
the same is for the folder
    ...\product\11.1.0\db_1\oc4j\j2ee\OC4J_DBConsole_oracleserver _orasid
there is the case that instead of your computer name in the second folder you would see localhost
i apologize for writing someting not eligible to the forums guidelines as has been noticed by another attendee.
but it was a joke anw...

  • How to start listener in sql developer for remote debug

how to start listener in sql developer for remote debug ? Since the new version 1.1.0.23 is different with the old version for remote debug, I don't know how to start the listener on the new version for remote debug.
even follow the user guide below and not work . Experts on sql developer please help me with this.
    Remote Debugging
To debug a procedure or function for a connection where the database is on a different host than the one on which you are
running SQL Developer, you can perform remote debugging.
Remote debugging involves many of the steps as for local debugging; however, do the
following before you start the remote debugging: Use an Oracle client such as SQL*Plus to issue the debugger connection command. Whatever
client you use, make sure that the session which issues the debugger connection commands is the same session which executes your PL/SQL
    program containing the breakpoints.
For example, if the name of the remote system is remote1, use the following SQL*Plus command to open a
TCP/IP connection to that system and the port for the JDWP session:
EXEC DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP.CONNECT_TCP('remote1', '4000'); The first parameter
is the IP address or host name of the remote system, and the second parameter is the port number on that remote system on which the debugger
    is listening.
Right-click the connection for the remote database, select Remote Debug, and complete the information in the Debugger - Attach
to JPDA dialog box. Then, follow the steps that you would for local debugging (for example, see Debugging a PL/SQL Procedure).
Debugger - Attach to JPDA This dialog box is displayed when you right-click a database connection name and select Remote Debug.
    Use this
dialog box if you are using the Sun Microsystem's Java Platform Debugger Architecture (JPDA) and you would like the debugger to listen so
that a debuggee can attach to the debugger.
For more information about remote debugging, see Remote Debugging.
Host: Name or IP address of
the remote host on which SQL Developer should listen for the database to connect.
Port: Listening port number on the remote host. You can
choose any valid port number that is not in use by another process.
Timeout: The number of seconds that SQL Developer will wait for the
remote database to make a debugging connection. Don't Show Dialog Box Before Connecting: If this option is checked, this dialog box will not
be displayed before future connections for remote debugging

    You're not the only one:
Not able to start remote debug listener

    owner_owr@ORKDEV01>
Whilst a process flow is executing the last query will list executions, all of which have status BUSY:
    owner_owr@ORKDEV01> @list_requests
    ====================

    owner_owr@ORKDEV01>
As an aside, I will attempt to get rid of the READY deployment and deployment unit using deactive_deployment.sql
Now, if I attempt to use deactivate_execution.sql on any of the executions with status BUSY I get:
    owner_owr@ORKDEV01> @deactivate_execution
Voer waarde voor 1 in: 396136

    ORA-06512: at "OWNER_OWR.WB_RT_EXECUTION", line 90
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    owner_owr@ORKDEV01>
So all the seems to remain is to use abort_exec_request.sql
This does the job, but the script itself hangs.
I think it has to do with the l_stream_id not being checked again after the initial IF. I think it should probably be part of the loop condition as it is again reset in the do_acks inside the loop.
    Cheers & thanks,
    Colin

    HI, Welcome to OTN form,
SHUTDOWN is not a SQL statement but a SQL*Plus command . You cannot use SHUTDOWN in PL/SQL.

you can use DBMS_PROFILER to do this. This built in package is very well documented:
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/ranked?word=dbms_profiler&remark=federated_search
Depending on your IDE, you could get a visual representation of the profile. Something like:

how will i create database using sql plus?

do i have to use the "create db <database name>", use and " create table also,.."

    At dos prompt :
    C:\>set ORACLE_SID=<your SID>
    C:\>sqlplus / as sysdba
you get connected as sys user. Don't use this connection to create your own objects, create users instead.... but it would be useful to read some documentation, for example Starting SQL*Plus and manuals mentioned there.

  • Automatically start SQL Agent service after SQL Server service fails and starts.

    Hi!
I have SQL Server 2008 R2 with two main services - SQL Server and SQL Agent.
I'll try to describe my situation. It happens very occasionally, but sometimes SQL Server service terminates unexpectedly. It's my log:
09/13/2013 10:46:21,Service Control Manager,Error,The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
09/13/2013 10:46:21,,Error,[359] The local host server is not running,,,,
    09/13/2013 10:46:22,MSSQLSERVER,Error,The MSSQLSERVER service terminated unexpectedly.,Server,1073760843,,
09/13/2013 10:46:22,,Warning,[139] AutoRestart: Attempting to restart the MSSQLSERVER service (attempt #1)...,,,,
09/13/2013 10:46:27,,Warning,[139] AutoRestart: Attempting to restart the MSSQLSERVER service (attempt #2)...,,,,
09/13/2013 10:46:32,,Warning,[139] AutoRestart: Attempting to restart the MSSQLSERVER service (attempt #3)...,,,,
09/13/2013 10:46:32,,Error,[140] AutoRestart: The MSSQLSERVER service could not be restarted after 3 attempts,,,,
09/13/2013 10:46:32,,Warning,[360] SQLServerAgent initiating shutdown following MSSQLSERVER shutdown,,,,
As you can see, SQL Server service  terminates unexpectedly. Then SQL Agent service tries to start SQL Server service. After unsuccessfully attempts to start SQL Server service, SQL Agent service stops itself. I have the option setting in SQL Server
service to start itself after unexpectedly stop within 2 minutes and it is works well. But I have to start my SQL Agent service after this manually. Unfortunately, I can't investigate the reason of my SQL Server stops unexpectedly and in this case I just want
to make the settings to start both of my services SQL Server and SQL Agent automatically after this.  How can I set up this? How can I make my SQL Agent service starts after SQL Server service?

    Hello,
SQL server agent service depends on SQL server service so unless SQL server service comes online agent will not come online so agent is depended on SQL server not the other wise.
Now is your server 2008 R2 patched to latest service pack (SP2).If not please upgrade it to latest SP.Some fixes are there in Sp which will subside this issue. Can you paste output of
    select @@version
    >>Then SQL Agent service tries to start SQL Server service. No this is not the case
    >>Unfortunately, I can't investigate the reason of my SQL Server stops unexpectedly
Did you checked sql server errorlog and windows event log completely. Please do so and paste if you find some more info

  • How to stop SQL Server Agent Job if Stored Procedure returns value 0

I have SQL Server 2012 SSIS.
    I have 2 SSIS packages.
I have created SQL Server Agent Job for running packages.
I have created steps. If first step have run succesfully next step is run.
I have need to add new logic.
I have validation stored procedure, which validate DB table values and returns 1 or 0.
I would like to create logic where first of all this SP is runned. Return value of SP determines if steps are run or not.
I was thinking to use Execute SQL Task for running SP.
If value 1 is returned, then run rest of Tasks is run.
If value 0 is returned, what should I do so that Job is stopped? I need assistance!
I want current step to stop never moved to next step.
Is there any SSIS tasks, which can stop the Job?
Or should I make Step for running validation SP?
How to do so that if value 0 is returned stop Job.

    Please refer the below link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa260308(v=sql.80).aspx
    Please read Remarks carefully!!!
    Remarks
If a job is currently executing a step of type CmdExec, the process being run (for example, MyProgram.exe) is forced to end prematurely. Premature ending can result in unpredictable behavior such as files in use by the process being held open. Consequently,
sp_stop_job should be used only in extreme circumstances if the job contains steps of type CmdExec.
    Permissions
Execute permissions default to the public role in the
msdb database. A user who can execute this procedure and is a member of the
sysadmin fixed role can stop any job. A user who is not a member of the
sysadmin role can use sp_stop_job to stop only the jobs he/she owns.
When sp_stop_job is invoked by a user who is a member of the
sysadmin fixed server role, sp_stop_job will be executed under the security context in which the SQL Server service is running. When the user is not a member of the
sysadmin group, sp_stop_job will impersonate the SQL Server Agent proxy account, which is specified using
xp_sqlagent_proxy_account. If the proxy account is not available,
sp_stop_job will fail. This is only true for Microsoft® Windows® NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. On Windows 9.x, there is no impersonation and
sp_stop_job is always executed under the security context of the Windows 9.x user who started SQL Server.
